The role of inhibition in the development of arithmetic skills - a cross-sectional study in 5- and 7-year-old children.
No full textInhibition has been suggested to contribute to symbolic and non-symbolic quantity processing, but conclusions remain inconsistent. Using Structural Equation Modelling, the structure of inhibition and its contributions to symbolic and non-symbolic arithmetic are explored in predominantly White French 5- and 7-year-olds (N= 331, 169 females). Results suggest a lack of support for a unitary or binary (Response Inhibition and Distractor Suppression) inhibition construct in light of poor correlations between inhibition measures and highlight a link in both age groups between the Stop-Signal Task and symbolic arithmetic, and a link between the Flanker task and non-symbolic arithmetic only in 7-year-olds. The current study allows to dissect the differential contributions of inhibition facets to arithmetic development in a critical time window
What Motivates Narcissists to Buy What they Buy? What are the Consequences for their Meaning in Life?
No full textThe aim of this study is to measure whether those who score higher on narcissism gain meaning in life through conspicuous consumption and to explore the motives underlying their purchase decisions. In previous studies, I have measured participants’ preference for symbolic products by asking them to choose between images/descriptions of two different versions (symbolic vs. utilitarian) of products. These past studies have repeatedly found that narcissists prefer symbolic over utilitarian products. I want to extend this by examining their motivation for preferring symbolic products. Furthermore, the consumer tasks previously used involved making hypothetical choices of products to buy. In this present study, we are adopting a more ecologically valid approach by asking participants to think and write about an item of clothing they have bought recently. We then ask participants to answer questions about their product to determine how symbolic and utilitarian it is. We then ask participants about their motivations for buying their product. This study will help to determine what motivates narcissists’ preference for symbolic products and whether purchasing and owning a symbolic product in turn provides a sense of meaning in life for them
Neural signatures of reduced serial dependence in anti-NMDAR encephalitis and schizophrenia
No full textSerial dependence, a behavioral phenomenon where information from previous trials biases current trial reports, is pervasive in working memory tasks. There is growing interest in its mechanisms, and recent work has shown that individuals with schizophrenia and anti-NMDA receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis exhibit reduced serial dependence in simple delayed-response tasks. Modeling and experimental evidence suggest that serial dependence stems from the interplay between persistent neural activity and short-term synaptic plasticity in cortical circuits, with neural reactivations in between trials increasing serial dependence. A computational model that implements this hypothesis showed that a reduction in short-term plasticity, potentially due to NMDAR dysfunction, can replicate the observed reduction of serial dependence in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and schizophrenia, compared with healthy subjects. Yet, its neurophysiological predictions remain untested. Here, we used electroencephalography (EEG) to test if these patient groups have reduced neural reactivations, as the model predicts. Our findings confirm the absence of memory reactivations in schizophrenia and anti-NMDAR encephalitis. We show that this result does not depend on motor-related activity. Further, while memory codes are specifically impaired in these patients, the perceptual component of the code is as robust as in healthy participants. Overall, we report empirical evidence supporting a mechanistic model of serial dependence, which links reduced neural reactivations with diminished serial dependence in neuropsychiatric disorders

Regional Dynamics in Nigerian Politics: Voting in the 2023 Presidential Elections
No full textThe analysis of Nigeria's recent election suggests that voter decisions, influenced by ethnic and religious ties, economic conditions, and elite messaging, signal a more mature electoral engagement. Since transitioning from military to civilian rule in 1999, Nigeria's democratic journey has been full of challenges, fuelled by political exploitation of ethnic and religious divides. In this paper, we examine the influence of anticipatory tribalism on voter alignment and party strategies in Nigeria following the 2023 elections. Focusing on four presidential candidates, including two who split from the main opposition, we analyse ethno-religious dynamics and elite messaging in Nigeria’s evolving multi-ethnic democracy. Our findings reveal how speculative ethnic narratives shape electoral behaviour and alliances in Nigeria’s evolving multi-ethnic democracy
