    Get PDF
Objective: Aging is associated with increased oxidative stress and diminished cellular repair mechanisms, particularly in the lungs. This study investigates the protective effects of intermittent fasting (IF), SCD probiotics, and their combination on oxidative stress and molecular alterations in the lungs of aging rats. Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats (24 months old) were divided into four groups: control, intermittent fasting, probiotics, and a combination of both treatments. Malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were measured as markers of oxidative stress. Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to detect molecular changes in lung tissues. Results: Our findings demonstrated that both IF and probiotics, individually and in combination, reduced the MDA and AOPP levels, as well as MPO activity, compared to the control group, indicating a reduction in oxidative stress. Spectral analyses revealed molecular changes in lipid composition, protein conformation and oxidation, as well as phosphodiester groups of nucleic acids. The highest classification accuracy (93.18%) was obtained in the 1300-800 cm-1 region by LDA analysis. Conclusion: Intermittent fasting and probiotics may ameliorate age-related oxidative damage in the lungs and offer promising therapeutic potential for maintaining lung health in aging populations

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on cholinesterase enzyme activities and bioactive components of in vitro calli of Hypericum perforatum. Calli were obtained from Linsmaier Skoog (LS)/B5 medium containing 0.5 mg L-1 thidiazuron (TDZ) and 0.5 mg L-1 indole butyric acid (IBA). Different abscisic acid (0.01 mg L-1, 0.05 mg L-1,and 0.1 mg L-1) applications were performed on the calli obtained in tissue culture and extracted in 80% methanol. Hispidulin, fumaric acid, acacetin, epicatechin, and naringenin compounds were analyzed in Liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). While epicatechin (1.09 mg L-1) was found at the highest 0.05 mg L-1 ABA in callus samples, fumaric acid (2.30 mg L-1) and hispidulin (0.78 mg L-1) compounds were detected in the highest containing of 0.1 mg L-1 ABA. Acacetin (0.10 mg L-1) was produced in only 0.01 mg L-1 ABA, whereas naringenin (0.01 mg L-1) was produced in medium containing 0.05 mg L-1 ABA. The strongest Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) (0.207 +/- 0.012) and Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) (0.243 +/- 0.019) inhibition activity was shown the best with 0.1 mg L-1 ABA application. This study has shown that ABA can be used as an elicitor in callus culture of H. perforatum, and the amounts of related metabolites can be changed via elicitors.Mus Alparslan University Scientific Research Coordination Unit, Mus, Turkey [18-FEF-4901-02]This research was financially supported by grants from the Mus Alparslan University Scientific Research Coordination Unit, 18-FEF-4901-02, Mus, Turkey. No full text
Aim This randomized controlled clinical trial investigated the effects of gastrocnemius functional massage (GFM) combined with neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) on spasticity, gait parameters, and functional mobility in stroke patients. Methods A total of 28 chronic stroke survivors were randomized into an experimental group (EG, n = 13) and a control group (CG, n = 15). Both groups received NDT twice a week for six weeks, while the EG received additional GFM. Spasticity (Modified Ashworth Scale), gait parameters (LegSys), and functional mobility (Timed Up and Go test) were assessed pre- and post-treatment. Results The results showed significant improvements in spasticity within the EG for the hip adductor (p = 0.002), knee extensor (p = 0.006), and ankle plantar flexor muscles (p = 0.002), compared to minimal changes in the CG (p > 0.05). Gait analysis revealed significant improvements in the EG for stride number (p = 0.0001), stride length (p = 0.006), stride time (p = 0.001), and stride velocity (p = 0.002), whereas the CG showed no significant changes (p > 0.05). Functional mobility improvements in the EG included reduced sit-to-stand time (p = 0.021) and total Timed Up and Go time (p = 0.001), indicating enhanced dynamic balance and lower extremity strength. Conclusion These findings suggest that combining GFM with NDT significantly enhances spasticity reduction, gait parameters, and functional mobility in stroke patients. Future studies are needed to explore the long-term effects and underlying mechanisms of this combined approach. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

In the shadow of stigmatization: The psychological effects of having a child with special needs on parents in Türkiye: A qualitative research

    No full text
Aim: This study aimed to conduct an in-depth examination of the psychological effects experienced by parents of children with special needs, as well as their encounters with stigmatization in T & uuml;rkiye. Background: Raising children with special needs presents considerable psychological and social challenges for parents. Notably, experiences of stigmatization can adversely affect parents' mental health, leading to exclusion and social isolation. There is a paucity of scientific research on the stigmatizing experiences of parents of children with special needs in T & uuml;rkiye. This study sought to elucidate the effects of stigmatization on mental health by conducting an in-depth examination of parental experiences. Methods: This study employed interpretative phenomenological analysis, a qualitative research method. The study was conducted with 26 parents residing in eastern T & uuml;rkiye from January 6 to February 28, 2025. The interviews were conducted online, using a semi-structured interview form. Thematic content analysis was performed and the data obtained were evaluated using the MAXQDA 22 program. Results: Data collected from the interviews were systematically analyzed across six thematic categories: meeting the obstacle, impact on the parenting roles, reactions to the obstacle, experiences of stigmatization, coping strategies, and proposed solutions. Conclusions: This study elucidates significant findings regarding the stigmatization experiences encountered by parents of children with special needs as well as their coping strategies. The results indicated that parents frequently experienced feelings of burnout, loneliness, inadequacy, and exclusion as a consequence of stigmatization. However, they endeavored to overcome these challenges through social support and individual coping mechanisms. The findings advocate for the reduction of stigmatization and enhancement of parents' access to psychosocial support systems. Implications for nursing and health policy: Mental health nurses and other healthcare professionals must comprehend the stigmatization experiences encountered by parents of children with special needs, and demonstrate sensitivity to their psychosocial support requirements. Educational programs and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma should be integrated into the health care system. Furthermore, the establishment of psychological counseling and support groups for families of children with special needs is essential to prevent parental isolation. Health policies should be structured to promote comprehensive and accessible services for children with special needs and for their families. (c) 2025 Published by Elsevier Inc

Geotechnical characteristics of clayey soil stabilized with fly ash and marble dust

    No full text
This study investigates the separate and combined impacts of Class-F fly ash (FA) and marble dust (MD) on the geotechnical properties and resilient modulus (MR) of clayey soil. An intensive series of laboratory tests, including plasticity, swelling-shrinkage, compaction, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), shear strength, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), cyclic triaxial, and microstructural analyses, were conducted on soil specimens containing FA and MD at different percentages varying from 0 % to 12 %. The results showed that FA and MD additions significantly reduced the plasticity, free swell, and linear shrinkage potential of the soil, whilst UCS and CBR values increased up to a threshold value of 6 % to 9 % and then declined. The incorporation of FA, MD, and their combination (FA + MD) enhanced the soil's CBR by approximately 45.1 %, 55.9 %, and 85.1 %, respectively. Similarly, the UCS of the soil cured for 7 days improved by 14.1 %, 44.0 %, and 72.5 %, respectively. The cyclic triaxial tests yielded the highest MR values with FA alone, leading to a 51.1 % increase. When FA and MD were used together, MR values increased by 31.6 %, which was relatively higher than the 28.1 % increase observed with the use of MD alone. Furthermore, statistical modeling to predict the MR values was proposed, evaluated comparatively with already available applications, and hereby confirmed its superiority over traditional models to save time for future researchers

Temperature-dependent electrical characteristics analysis of the Al/p-type Si structures with GO and PTCDA interlayer: structural properties

    No full text
In this study, the electrical characteristics of Al/p-type Si semiconductor structures with PTCDA and GO interlayer were analyzed using current-voltage (I-V) measurements a wide temperature range (from 80 to 420 K with 20 K intervals and +/- 2.0 V). The ideality factor (n) and barrier height (Phi bo) values changed between 6.398 and 1.330 and 0.221 eV and 0.999 eV (for thermionic emission, TE, method), 0.243 eV and 1.084 eV (for Norde method) in temperature range of 80 K and 420 K, respectively. The experimental findings revealed that values of ideality factors (n), rectification ratio (RR) and series resistance (RS) decreases with increasing temperature, while barrier heights (Phi bo) and saturation currents (I0) values increases with increasing temperature. The Phi bo-n and Phi bo-q/(2kT) curves were obtained to explain the high n values and non-ideal situations of the Richardson curves. Two linear regions were found at low temperatures (from 80 to 180 K) and high temperatures (from 200 to 420 K). Thus, for low and high temperatures, Gaussian distributions (GDs) values of the I - V plot of the Al/(PTCDA:GO)/p-type Si semiconductor structure yielded average barrier heights of 0.7017 and 1.3342 eV with standard deviations (sigma 0) of 83.06 mV and 168.80 mV, respectively. Also, this values of barrier height have also been confirmed by updated ln(I0/T2) - (q2 sigma s2)/(2k2T2) vs. q/(kT) curves, which correspond to two distinct temperature regions. Richardson constant (A*) value with 1.153 x 10-6A/(K2cm2) is lower than the known value of p-type Si. But nevertheless, for distribution 1, Richardson's constant of 80.64 A/(K2cm2) is approximately three times larger than the known theoretical value of 32 Acm-2 K-2 for p-type silicon.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK)Open access funding provided by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK). No full text
Objectives: This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the physiological effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation combined with resistance training on the lipid profile, inflammatory and antioxidant responses, neuro-biomarkers, and physical performance parameters in physically healthy young adults. Methods: Thirty physically active male participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (omega-3 + resistance training) or a control group (resistance training only). Over eight weeks, both groups performed a standardized resistance training program three times per week. The experimental group additionally received 3150 mg/day of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Pre- and post-intervention assessments included blood biomarkers (LDL, HDL, triglycerides, IL-6, TNF-alpha, CRP, GSH, MDA, BDNF, serotonin, and dopamine) and physical performance tests (1RM, CMJ, RSI, 10 m sprint, and Illinois agility). Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in the lipid profile, with decreases in LDL and triglyceride levels and an increase in HDL levels. Levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha were significantly reduced, while GSH levels increased and MDA levels decreased, indicating an enhanced antioxidant status. The neuro-biomarker analysis revealed increased levels of BDNF, dopamine, and serotonin. Physical performance tests demonstrated greater improvements in muscular strength, power, speed, agility, and reaction-based performance in the omega-3 group compared to controls. Conclusions: These findings suggest that omega-3 supplementation, when combined with resistance training, has a multi-systemic enhancing effect on both physiological markers and physical performance. This combination may represent a promising strategy for optimizing athletic adaptations and recovery in physically active populations. Future studies should further explore these effects across different populations and training modalities

This study, which deals with the function of the media as an ideological tool and the power of events to shape social perception, analyses how four different Turkish newspapers present the news of the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Heniyye in terms of ideological and hegemonic discourse. In this context, it is analysed whether the news language, imagery and discursive structure in the news reports aim to direct the reader into a certain frame and create an ideological structure. The study shows that the newspapers Cumhuriyet, Sözcü, Sabah and Yeni Safak, which were included in the sample, each frame the incident according to their own political and ideological stance. While Cumhuriyet treated the incident as an international crisis, Sözcü newspaper criticised Israel's actions and portrayed the incident as part of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The newspapers Sabah and Yeni Safak, which take a conservative stance, treated Heniyye's death in the context of resistance and martyrdom and emphasised Turkey's role.
