Ischemic Strokes: Exploring the Challenges of Translating Nanomedicine into Clinical Practice
Acute ischemic strokes (AIS) represent a major health concern with more than 12 million deaths per year. Despite the establishment of intravenous thrombolysis as the main line of treatment three decades ago, and the subsequent advent of endovascular therapy, most patients remain disabled. While nanomedicine has shown considerable promise in the management of strokes over the years, there remains a gap between the numerous preclinical studies and the paucity of related clinical trials. In the last five years, around 250 articles described preclinical nanomedicine-based approaches to tackle AIS. These articles explore multiple directions to alleviate AIS, including firstly neuroprotection, followed by the use of thrombolysis through various approaches. Notably, they show a broad variety in the in vivo model choice as well as key readouts, making comparison across protocols difficult. Moreover, relevant data for clinical translation is often lacking, such as biodistribution and organ toxicity, pharmacokinetics, or stability of the proposed nanomaterials. On the other hand, only a few clinical trials have involved nanoparticles, with mixed results. Thus, it can be proposed that among the obstacles hindering the clinical application of the oftenpromising nanomaterials, the major challenges are the insufficient characterization of nanomaterials including storage, stability, biodistribution, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics; diversity of in vivo protocols, hyper-focused ischemia-reperfusion damages compared to thrombolysis; and a necessity to acknowledge the complexity of AIS thrombi when designing a therapeutic approach. However, ongoing research considering the speed and feasibility requirements for AIS might result in future improvement in patient care
Operations on constructible functions and generalized valuations
Alesker's theory of generalized valuations unifies smooth measures and constructible functions on real analytic manifolds, extending classical operations on measures. Alesker showed that these operations agree with the sheaf-theoretic ones on constructible functions under restrictive assumptions, leaving key aspects conjectural. In this article, we significantly close this gap by proving that the two approaches indeed coincide on constructible functions under mild transversality assumptions. Our proof is based on a comparison with the corresponding operations on characteristic cycles
Spin properties of NV ensembles in phosphorus doped diamond
International audienceNitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have demonstrated their full potential in various applications, ranging from highly-sensitive nanoscale magnetometers [1], high-pressure sensors [2] and diamond-based quantum applications [3]. As a solid-state spin, the properties of these color centers strongly depend on the host material. Recent works nicely demonstrated this point: isotopic purification has shown to improve the spin coherence time of low impurity concentration diamond [4], while phosphorous doping allows to improve NV charge stability [5] and lead to record spin coherence [6].In this work, we investigate the spin properties of native NV ensembles in phosphorus-doped diamond layers, homoepitaxially grown on (100) Ib HPHT substrates with either natural or isotopically purified methane. The concentrations of phosphorus, nitrogen and NV centers, [P], [N] and [NV], are quantified by different techniques including SIMS, absorption and photoluminescence (PL) at low temperature. First, low temperature PL confirms phosphorus doping (7x1013 – 7x1015 P.cm-3) stabilizes the negative charge state of the NV center with a NV0 population that remains below 10% even at 1 mW laser power. Then, the dephasing time of spin ensemble (T2*) is characterized by Optical Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) under continuous excitation. We investigate the T2* dependence with [N], which is the majority impurity in the samples. We found results that are consistent with a dipolar coupling of NVs with a bath spins made of nuclear 13C and/or substitutional nitrogen. We found T2* around 0.5 μs for natural isotopic composition, and up to ~3 μs for 12C purified diamond with [N] = 6.3x1016 cm-3. These results are promising for diamond quantum magnetometers with NV centers.References1. G. Balasubramanian, et al. Nature 455 (2008), 7213.2. M. Lesik, et al. Science 366 (2019), 6471.3. L. Rethinking the International Organization for Migration
International audienceAs the introduction to the special issue ‘Rethinking the International Organization for Migration’, this article reviews the growing literature on this organisation and contextualises the contributions of the special issue. It identifies five key topics in the research on this organisation. (1) Its history and transformation into a leading agency in the current global migration governance. (2) The ideological dimension of this transformation, with IOM’s expansion coming along with the emergence of specific worldviews about migration. (3) The ‘datafication’ of IOM and the central role of research, knowledge and information in its expansion. (4) The nexus between humanitarianism and security in the IOM’s activities. And (5) the questions pertaining to power and interest, in a context in which the IOM claims to work ‘in the interest of all’ while also serving the interests of specific governments. The conclusion analyses the political/epistemological issues underlying cooperation between researchers and IOM
International audienceSince the 2016 launch of Venezuela's “Orinoco Mining Arc” open-pit mining megaproject, several armed groups known as sindicatos have taken possession of certain mining territories. Adopting the Weberian definition of the state, we hypothesize that the political grouping of the sindicato present on one of these territories, that of Las Claritas, can be qualified as an embryonic state. Pursuing Bourdieu's questioning of the emergence of the state, we seek to document the statehood process and to bear witness to how “bandits” become “princes.” Based on an ethnographic and documentary approach, our research highlights four mechanisms involved in the process of statehood: institutionalization, monopolization, legitimization and demarcation.
