Design of Digital Model for Re-Planning of Informal Settlements Using Geographic Information Systems
The process of re-planning settlements is a complex process, governed by technical foundations, legal regulations, procedures and practical steps to improve and develop these settlements to be at the perfect planning level, with minimum damages as much as possible. Execution of this process manually leads to slow down the solution with disconnected procedures and sometimes to increase the complexity of the problem by adding new extension of informal settlements, losing time, effort, cost and decrease the accuracy .In this research a new method had been proposed depending on digital systems to execute re-planning process by analyzing the foundations and regulations that govern the re-planning process and design the required digital solutions for its implementation applying the analysis tools of geographic information systems softwares together with its capabilities of input process of spatial data and their attributes in one digital database which enables its efficient integration, quick retrieval, ease of analysis and presentation. This method contributes in making re-planning process easy, quickly, secured, precise and of low cost.Aerial photographs had been used as a source of spatial data, non spatial attributes had been collected from the field using forms designed for this purpose and ArcGis software had been used to execute the steps of the process in the study area. Finally a digital re-planning model for the informal settlements had been designed to be as a guidance to execute the same steps for other areas by changing the data only
Sequence Stratigraphy and Sedimentary Facies of Fula Subbasin, Muglad Basin (Sudan)
Sedimentary analysis and Facies Associations may enhance accuracy of sequence
core (very stratigraphic correlation of Fula Subbasin, Muglad Basin, Sudan. According to
little) and log data, stratigraphic correlation was set. Abu Gabra Formation, Bentiu
Formation, and Aradeiba Formation were subdivided into units. Essential depositional
systems were recognized in the study area on the basis of the evolution of sedimentary facies.
The origin of Fula Subbasin is related to the first rifting cycle (+ synrifting cycle?) that took
place during the Early Cretaceous associated with an increase in tectonic activity and the
opening of the Central African rift system (Late Jurassic- Middle Miocene). Synsedimentary
tectonic activity and succeeding restructural regime of the subbasin were clearly reflected in
the sedimentary records. Two sets of faulting in Fula oil field were detected. The first set
was striking NW-SE, as in five zones the Fula 1 fault, Fula 2 fault, Fula 3 fault, eastern fault
of well Fula 1 and the western fault of well Fula North 2, which dominate the evolution and
sediments of the Fula structure. The second set was striking EW, as the north fault of well
Fula 1, which controls the evolution of the trap. Three seismic horizons, i.e. the top of
Aradeiba, the top of Bentiu and the top of Abu Gabra formations were chosen for
interpretation according to their geological significance. Infill of that Early Cretaceous
subbasin began with continental deposits that were alluvial and lacustrine in origin
Control of Induction Motor Drive using Artificial Neural Network
The induction motor drive is a dynamic nonlinear system with uncertainty in the machine
parameters. The aim of this study is to improve tracking performance of the induction motor drive. A method
for controlling induction motor drive is presented with conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controller and
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) controller. MATLAB/SIMULINK software is used to develop a three
phase induction motor model. Also the performances of the two controllers have been verified. The ANN is
trained so that the speed of the drive tracks the reference speed. It is found that with the use of the ANN
controller the performance and dynamics of the induction motor are enhanced as compared with that of a
conventional PI controller
Deformational Mechanism and Tectonic Evolution of Mesozoic-Cenozoic Nonmarine Basins from Bohai Bay Basin - China
Bohai Bay Basin,China, is a rift basin developed in Mesozoic-Cenozoic time span.
It was compressionally deformed during Caledonian Orogeny and situated on a Paleozoic platform
“old craton” basement and later subjected to extensional stress and induced major strike-slip
(wrench) fault. The basin opening transpired on a series of half-grabens trending NNE-SSW in
Bohai Bay Basin zone. Models for deformational mechanism and evolution of the Bohai Bay Basin,
China, and its tectonic and stratigraphic history were proposed. Two separate scenarios were set for
the evolution of Bohai Bay Basin: the first is based on the changes in plate convergence rates along
the eastern plate boundary of Eurasia/ Pacific plates which have additional role in the extensional
skin of Bohai Bay Basin in certain stage of extension or rifting and the second is a model of three
major incidents of extensional tectonism: basement pre-rifting, a syn-rift stage, and a post-rift sag
stage were documented for Bohai Bay Basin. The major factor controlling the lacustrine basins is
global eustasy; however, the role of global tectonic played a significant control mechanism in the
evolution and development of Bohai Bay Basin
Optimally Tuned Proportional Integral Derivatives (PID) Controllers for Set-point
The proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is tuned to find its
parameters values. Generally most of the tuning methods depend mainly on the
experimental approach of open-loop unit step response. The controller parameters can be
found if the system truly can be approximated by First Order Plus-Dead Time (FOPDT).
The problem with such type of controllers is that: the performance of most of them
deteriorates as the ratio ( L T ) of approximated equivalent delay L to the overall time
constant T changes. The optimum tuning always checks this ratio and considers it in its
formulae. The performances of different PID tuning techniques are simulated for different
systems and analyzed based on the transient responses. MATLAB simulation results are
presented and compared for different higher order systems. For the same characterization
procedure, optimally tuned PID controller shows better performances over Ziegler-
Nicholas (Z-N) and Cohn-Coon tuned. Superiority of the optimal PID tuning techniques
sustained for variety of higher order system
Route Network Analysis in Khartoum City
Road network has been viewed as a major dynamic force in influencing quality of
life and shaping cities all over the globe. Sudan as developing country is witnessing growth in
transport and infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Big cities such as Khartoum suffer from
congestions of traffic. Nevertheless, finding correct route in the required time is a difficult
problem for many drivers especially in emergency cases. The lack of adequate information to
find the shortest route to the nearest service, together with the lack of tools to extract such
information and presents it when needed. The purpose of the paper is to introduce a proposal to
produce digital route guided maps and hence deploy digital spatially enabled location-based
computer program to be downloaded in laptop and mobile as a platform to improve services in
case of emergencies such as accidents. This had been done by utilizing the capabilities of GIS in
network analysis and visualization to enhance decision making in route selection to the nearest
hospital by mapping the services area based on travel time
Casing Failure Analysis for API N-80 Grade in Sudanese Thermal Oil Recovery Production Wells: Case Study
Implementation of the Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) and Steam Flooding as thermally Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods increase the commercial value of the existence Field through increasing oil recovery and field extension. When the steam is generated, processed and injected with high peak temperature into shallow wells (total depth of 700m) for oil recovery, it may result in high thermally induced stresses, which might exceed its design limit of the material and lead directly to the plastic deformation in the casing and thread connection. The objective of this paper is to premineraly investigate and analyze the reasons behind the casing failure in some well candidates at Fula North East (FNE) thermal oilfield based on the analytical analysis targeting the related structural and operational aspects of these applications. There are several casing failures have been reported; but so far no enough evident to correlate these failures to the mentioned stresses. Therefore, Ensuring adequate structural integrity and seal ability of the connections over the full service life of a thermal recovery well is a significant challenge. In this work, the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on premineraly manner has been used through correlation of the problem to casing’s grade and materials, cement formulation, sand production and steam injection parameters and thermal insulation process, by using step by step methodology. The results show that some supporting measures are recommended in order to minimize the casing damage and extend the life time of the thermal wells in FNE oil field. The above mentioned methodology has been used as the first time in Sudan to analyze casing failure in thermal oilfield

Performance Comparison of Sliding Mode Control and Conventional PI Controller for Speed Control of Separately Excited Direct Current Motors
Direct Current (DC) motors have been used extensively in industry mainly
because of the simple strategies required to achieve good performance in speed or position
control applications. This paper addresses controlling of speed of a separately excited DC
motor which remains among the vital issues. A separately excited DC motor is generally
controlled by Proportional plus Integral (PI) controller. PI controller is simple but sensitive
to parameter variations and external disturbance. Due to the robustness of Sliding Mode
Control (SMC), especially against parameters variations and external disturbances, and also
its ability in controlling linear and nonlinear systems; a separately excited DC motor sliding
mode speed controller technique is proposed in this paper. Performance of these controllers
has been verified through simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The
