Development of Flipbooks Based on Guided Inquiry Models to Train Science Process Skills of Junior High School Students on Temperature and Heat Materials
Objective: This development aims to produce a flipbook-based guided inquiry learning model to train science process skills that are feasible in terms of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Method: The type of research used is development research. The development model used is the 4D model (define, design, develop, and disseminate). The assessment instrument used in this study consisted of learning device validation sheets and science process skills tests. Results: Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that digital-based flipbooks obtain an average validation in the valid category. These results indicate that flipbooks can be used as learning media. Novelty: The novelty of this research is an inquiry-based feature on flipbooks about temperature and heat, which can train students' science process skills. In addition, the developed inquiry-based Flipbook is also a digital flipbook
Development of Environmental Pollution Handling Flipbook Based on Surabaya Local Wisdom to Train Students’ Ethno-conservation
One of the efforts to deal with environmental pollution by exploring natural potentials and traditions in the local community is ethno-conservation education. This study aims to develop a flipbook of environmental pollution handling based on Surabaya's local wisdom to train students in Ethno-conservation. The type of research is Research and Development with the ADDIE model of Branch theory. Theoretical feasibility is reviewed from the results of expert validation, while empirical feasibility is examined from the readability test. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive qualitative. The results obtained are a validation score of 3.88, a percentage of 97% and the category is excellent, and the legibility test is at level 10. Hence, the Flipbook has the potential to be used in learning the handling of environmental pollution based on Surabaya local wisdom to train students in ethno-conservation
Analysis of Students’ Critical Thinking Skills on Virtual Reality Learning Media
This study aims to describe students’ critical thinking skills and the corresponding prior knowledge of Virtual Reality (VR) media used for learning purposes in a classroom setting. A total of 65 high school students from Grade XI Science 1 and Science 2 were involved as respondents in this preliminary research using qualitative-descriptive analysis. The instrument used included questionnaires (distributed over the respondents) containing 12 questions on VR relevant to the indicators of critical thinking skills. The results showed students' skills in critical thinking at the intermediate level. The indicator of analytical ability has the highest percentage in the medium category. The number of students with critical thinking skills in the high category is 14, and in the medium category, as many as 51 students. Students' prior knowledge of VR media (familiar with the technology) was reported to 46.00% of all the respondents, and the remaining 54.00% did not know what it was. However, all the respondents were interested and happy with VR media as a learning tool. Improvement of critical thinking skills could be achieved through contextual learning and VR learning media. The implication of the present study for future use of VR education media in schools is possible as VR media is considered to be technology-assisted learning, applicable to science and physics teachers when delivering learning materials in class
Analysis of Critical Thinking Skills of Prospective Elementary School Teacher Student
Objective: Education is one of the basic needs of humans. The current educational challenge is to produce individuals who can compete in the 21st century. We can access various information freely via the internet, and there is no guarantee that the news we see is true. To use this information properly, individuals must evaluate data and information sources. Method: The type of research used is qualitative research. The population in this study is all ESTE FoE Unesa students, and the sample used is the 2018-2020 class. The sample used was class 2019, D, and F, totaling 84 students. The data collection method used in this study is the test. The instrument used in this study was a critical thinking skills test. Data analysis was carried out in percentage terms. Results: The results showed that the critical thinking skills of Elementary School Teacher Education Faculty of Education Unesa students were in a low category. The results of this study are expected to be used by lecturers or researchers to design and develop learning activities that can facilitate students to practice critical thinking skills. Novelty: Lecturers can design the implementation of learning in the classroom that trains critical thinking skills to become more qualified, effective, and efficient
Investigation of the Relationship Between Computational Thinking and Design Thinking Skills of Science Teacher Candidates
Objective: Today's problems, which affect society and the environment, require individuals to have comprehensive skills. In this regard, it is essential to possess Computational Thinking (CT) and Design Thinking (DT) because it encompasses many dimensions and facilitates learning. Since DT processes are production-oriented, they can concretize computational processes that seem abstract to students. Therefore, using DT and CT together can improve both skills' development. However, it is seen that there needs to be a gap in investigating the relationship between CT and the DT skills of science teacher candidates. Therefore, the current research investigated the relationship between CT and DT skills among 94 science teacher candidates in the first and fourth years of their education and whether their skills differed based on grade level. Method: For this objective, a relational research model from quantitative research methodologies was utilized to understand whether variables interacted and gain valuable insights. Results: The results showed a positive relationship between science teacher candidates' CT and DT skills. Moreover, their skills differed according to grade level. Novelty: In this respect, this research contributes to the literature by stating that it could be beneficial to incorporate CT and DT skills in courses designed to acquire these two skills
Effectiveness of ADI-STEM to Improve Student’s Science Literacy Skill
Objective: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI)–Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) model in improving students' scientific literacy abilities. Method: The method used in this research is the literature review method. The literature review is a type of research used to collect data and information by collecting and reviewing various references. This study analyzes as many as 20 national and international articles that can be accounted for. The articles used were published in 2015-2022. The steps taken in this study were identifying topics, finding and selecting appropriate articles, analyzing and synthesizing the literature, and concluding. Result: Based on the results of the studies and analyses that have been carried out, it can be concluded that (1) the application of the ADI learning model can improve students' scientific literacy skills; (2) the ability to argumentation skills to increase students' scientific literacy; (3) integrating STEM into the learning process is also able to improve scientific literacy skills because STEM provides opportunities for students to identify real-life problems. Novelty: This study reveals that students' scientific literacy can be increased effectively by integrating ADI and STEM. These findings invite researchers, educators, and the government to develop learning that facilitates ADI-STEM learning
Dropout Cause of Elementary School Children in West Java, Indonesia: A Descriptive Study from The Academic-Economic Perspective, and Its Relation to The Pandemic
Objective: This study aims to identify the dropout cause of elementary school children in West Java, Indonesia, especially from the academic and economic perspective. Method: The method used is a descriptive study by distributing an online questionnaire on the relation of schools having dropout children in elementary and junior high school in West Java, Indonesia. Results: The study results show that the reasons for dropouts are the pandemic condition, the environment, laziness, and there is no budget for the school. Most children who dropped out of school during the pandemic stated that learning was not fun, most children desire to return to school, and most dropout children are girls. Most of the dropout families are in the lower middle-class economy. Novelty: The study explained the dropout cause of elementary school in West Indonesia using primary data, which contained the academic and economic factors and their relation to the pandemic that the other previous studies have not revealed
Academic Resilience and Religiosity Among College Students Facing Post-Pandemic Learning
Objective: The shock of rapid shifts in academic activity patterns affects students' mental health and academic progress. Resilience and religiosity in dealing with adversity are vital to surviving the post-pandemic transitional period. Method: This research is qualitative-quantitative descriptive with a combination of concurrent embedded methods, and the primary method is qualitative. Three hundred forty-one samples from 18,537 populations were taken using a simple random sampling technique with an error rate of 1.00% x 5.00%. Data was collected through an electronic questionnaire (G-Form). The instruments used were ARS-30 Cassidy and 4-BDRS Saroglou. Results: The results showed that students' academic resilience and religiosity were positive, with very high, high, and moderate scores and none in the low or shallow range. In all the religions studied resilient students are also religious. This shows that persistent children can describe events, adapt, and avoid negative emotional responses; they also have trust, determination, and faith in God. The implication is that when students face problems, risks, and academic difficulties in face-to-face learning during the post-pandemic transition period, they show the ability not to give up easily; they believe that God will help them through challenges and difficulties. Novelty: The novelty of the research is that good academic resilience and religiosity positively impact student’s academic activities
Analysis Effectiveness of Implementation Assessment as Learning on Metacognitive Skills
Objective: This study aims to determine the most effective application of assessment in improving metacognitive skills in the learning process. Method: The method used is a literature review. A literature review is defined as an investigation of scientific articles, books, and other sources related to a particular problem, field of research, or theory to provide an overview, summary, and evaluation of scientific work. This research method uses several steps, including (1) topic identification about Assessment as Learning and metacognitive skill; (2) search and select appropriate articles by Scopus and Google Scholar; (3) analyze and synthesize literature; and (4) text organization. Results: Assessment as learning can be applied using self-assessment, peer assessment, making portfolios and rubrics, as well as group discussions and the teacher. This approach can also be designed online or offline. Self-assessment and peer assessment are more effective in improving metacognitive skills in learning. Novelty: This study can provide an overview assessment design by actively involving learners to improve metacognitive skills, which can help realize the achievement of learning objectives
Analysis of Student Conceptions and Conceptional Changes about Chemical Equilibrium Materials in Concentration Factors
Objective: This study aims to determine the conception and changes in the conception of the concentration factor in chemical equilibrium material. Method: The method used in this study is a mixed method, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, namely the Concurrent Embedded Strategy, which is a combination of qualitative methods and quantitative methods carried out at the same time. Results: The test instruments provided can reduce the misconceptions that exist in students when viewed from a comparison of the number of students who experience misconceptions from 13.33% in the first stage to 7.00% in the last stage. Students understand enough about chemical equilibrium shifts but still need clarification, especially in writing down changes in reaction equations when chemical equilibrium is disturbed and analyzing phenomena using metacognitive examples of a concept in their surroundings. Novelty: This research reveals that students' misconceptions can be reduced using worksheets with five processing stages. This novelty can provide (1) solutions related to identifying students' misconceptions and (2) reducing students' misconceptions regarding chemical equilibrium concentration factors
