Philosophical Anthropology of E. FinkAlgis Mickunas
SummaryCultural and historical variability is completely overwhelming and within its context it is almost impossible to decipher something “essential”, some “invariant variable” which would comprise a clue to what the human is, – this idea is presented as the main presupposition of Eugen Fink’s philosophical anthropology. A major direction of Fink’s works is a fundamental critique of traditional ontology and a search for a worldly thinking that would be more appropriate or implicit in human “worldly” existence. While following Husserl’s transcendental philosophy, Fink opened up a new philosophical domain that is implicit in transcendental mode of awareness. His effort consisted in “revealing” what is already amidst us, what we have silently guessed and lived but dared not speak. This “revelation” is at the basis of Fink’s conception of education. Education is a movement from authority to autonomy, from submission to “pregiven” and ready-made answers toward the creative, the free activity which is its own source.
Body in the Living WorldTomas Kačerauskas
SummaryThe article deals with the relation between the body and the living environment. According to the author, the body is not only the centre of orientation in the environment, but also a factor of creative interaction with it. While we are creating our own living environment, the role of the senses is analysed according to the phenomenology of Husserl and Merleau-Ponty. On the grounds of Levinas’ concept it is shown that the body inspires the ethical relationships between participants of the environment which is created together with them as well. The body is interpreted in the context of phenomenological and hermeneutical cultural studies where culture is explained as the development of the existential project (Heidegger). The author raises a thesis that the body is a factor of existential creation as an interaction between our environment and ourselves. The article deals with the relation between embodiment and the other forms of human creative activity such as naming and limiting. The body serves as a factor of interaction among different forms of creative activity. On the grounds of Plato’s and Aristotle’s philosophy it is asserted that the erotic body gives a creative movement to the interaction between man and his environment. Our becoming in an environment, which we embody as our living space, forms the content of culture as an existential creation. There are analysed the principles of both activity (creativity) and passivity (suffering) of the body. The author shows a relation between Husserl’s passive synthesis and Levinas’ passivity in the presence of the Other. The creativity (and culture in general) of a participant of the living environment is conditioned by the interaction between activity and passivity. In this process, the identity of this participant is formed. The article deals with a combined model of both the circle and the layers. Thereby the author aims to substantiate the thesis that existential creation is a co-action of the different layers of the living environment. The phenomenology of culture here is developed as an interaction of different existential layers (ethical, aesthetical, technical) in which the body plays an important role. The theses raised in the article are illustrated with examples of multilayer art (films). Keywords: body, environment (Umwelt), existence, creation, phenomenology, eros. A. MACEINOS FILOSOFINĖ PEDAGOGIKA
Iš akiračio neišleidžiama A. Maceinos pedagoginių pažiūrų raida, ugdymo interpretacijų kaita, ryškėjančio filosofo pastanga kurti universaliąją pedagogiką. Nors A. Maceinos palikimo leidėjai suskubo ugdymo teoriją pavadinti „pedagogikos filosofija“, straipsnio autorius linkęs sugrąžinti autentiškesnį, paties pedagogikos veikalų autoriaus teiktą „filosofinės pedagogikos“ įvardijimą ir analizuoti jos virsmą į ugdymo filosofiją. Pagrindiniai žodžiai: ugdymo filosofija, pietizmas pedagogikoje, tautinio auklėjimo ir atitautinimo teorija, švietimas ir mokykla valstybėje, kūrybinis ugdymo pobūdis.Philosophical Pedagogy of A. MaceinaJuozas Vytautas Uzdila
SummaryAntanas Maceina (1908–1987) is an outstanding representative of pedagogical education inbetween the two wars. He worked in the spheres of the theory of national education, pedagogical correlation, and the history of world pedagogy, analyzed the role of education and educational institutions in Lithuanian culture, the problem of pedagogical vitalism, and gave a phenomenological analysis of the pedagogical act. A. Maceina grounded the close connection between philosophy and pedagogy, asserted their integral synthesis and realistic idealism. At Vytautas Magnus University he was the first to maintain a doctoral dissertation in pedagogy “National Education” in 1934 (scientific research supervisor Prof. Stasys Šalkauskis). In 1939, A. Maceina wrote his great work “A History of Pedagogy” where, with his characteristic pietism, he considered the problems of national education and denationalization, elucidated the essence of education and training, asser ted the creative nature of fostering and the freedom of educational institutions in Lithuania. The article focuses on A. Maceina’s diverse pedagogical heritage emphasizing the significance of his theory of national education, the role of school education in promoting Lithuanian culture, the phenomenological analysis of the pedagogical act, the development of his ideas of pedagogy, and his determined attempt to create world pedagogy. Although the publishers of A. Maceina’s works labeled his theory of education as “philosophy of pedagogy”, the author of the article is inclined to call back a more authentic term “philosophical pedagogy” given by A. Maceina himself and then to analize its transformation to educational philosophy. Keywords: philosophical pedagogy, educational philosophy, pietism in pedagogy, theory of national education and denationalization, school education in the state, pedagogical act, creative nature of education
E. GENDROLIO BENDRUOMENINĖS ŽMOGAUS RAIDOS TEORIJA
Straipsnyje analizuojami filosofo ir antropologo Edmundo Gendrolio (1938–1994) filosofiniai ntropologiniai samprotavimai apie žmogaus savivokos, save suvokiančio mąstymo raidą. Gendrolis nuosekliai rėmėsi socialinės ir kultūrinės antropologijos teorijomis, empiriniais paleoantropologijos tyrinėjimais, etologijos prielaidomis. Straipsnio tikslas yra parodyti Gendrolio filosofinių antropologinių samprotavimų pecifiškumą, išskiriant jo bendruomeninės abstraktaus mąstymo kilmės teoriją, pabrėžiant solidarumo ir kultūros tvermės formų svarbą žmogaus raidai nuo seniausių Homo erectus laikų. Straipsnyje parodoma, kad Gendrolis nuosaikiai kritikavo marksistinę darbo teoriją, zoologinį individualizmą, linijinį evoliucionizmą, filosofinės antropologijos spekuliatyvumą, ir tvirtinama, kad jis savitai, dialektiškai plėtojo neoevoliucionizmo teorijas, papildytas F. Boaso teorinėmis prielaidomis. Gendrolis atskirai išskyrė istoriškumo bei evoliucijos daugialinijiškumo teorijas, tokiu būdu siekdamas suformuoti savitą sociokultūrinės antropologijos metodologiją ir pasipriešinti unifikaciniam europocentrizmui bei kolonializmui. Pagrindiniai žodžiai: filosofinė antropologija, sociokultūrinė antropologija, neoevoliucionizmas, bendruomeniškumas, darbas, zoologinis individualizmas.E. Gendrolis’ Theory of Communitarian Development of the Human BeingGintautas Mažeikis
SummaryConsiderations of philosopher and social anthropologists Edmundas Gendrolis (1938–1994) about selfimagination and self-understanding of human beings from the point of social and cultural anthropology and paleoanthropology are analyzed. Gendrolis supported his considerations by theories and ethodologies, researches of social and cultural anthropology, paleoanthropology, ethology, Marxist philosophy. The aim of the article is to show the specificity of his philosophical anthropological considerations, especially of theory of communitarian ideation, development of conscious solidarity, cultural continuity from the time of Homo erectus. The article shows that Gendrolis moderately criticized the Marxist theory of work, zoological individualism, linear evolutionarism, Eurocentrism, racism and cultural segregation. He tried to resist the colonial and neocolonial tendencies in anthropological discourses and to support common po stcolonial attitudes to the history of tribes and small nations. On the contrary, he developed ideas of F. Boas, multilinear cultural Evolutionarism, ideas of L. A. White, M. Sahlins, E. R. Service and the dialectical approach to the complexity of issues of the human being. Such issues are morphological changes of paleoanthropos and neoanthropos, domestic life and household, exogamy and taboo, totems and early forms of faith, tools of the work and art pictures. He tried to develop the humanistic approach to the Homo erectus and Neanderthals as the basis for the future humanistic interpretation of traditional tribes and small nations. Such considerations corresponded to the Lithuanian world conception and to the attempts to liberate themselves from the Soviet occupation and Soviet cultural hegemony. He maintained the main subject of self-comprehending thinking to be community and its skills of cooperation and ideation. Ideation is the process of forming and relating ideas, images and ideals. The process of ideation, the making of abstract solutions and conceptual memory depends on community network, trust, solidarity that could be supported by common rituals, games, art, by the process of education of children. Ideation influenced the skills of hunters, pickers, formed wedding rules, trade among the modern Homini sapiens. And vice versa: all human activities supported and developed the process of abstract thinking and collective ideation. The integral approach to the issues of human being and the theory of multilinear evolution of them became the basis for criticism of Marxist anthropology. He criticized Marxism as well as social Darwinism and any other evolutionism as too much teleological, deterministic and dogmatic theories. His other critical point is about zoological individualism which accumulates a lot of negative interpretations of savages and provides cultural aggression. However, Gendrolis stayed alone from the European social or cultural anthropological movement, and his very large and quite deep considerations didn’t become the beginning of the institutional development of social or cultural anthropological studines in Lithuania. He developed a very little dialog with local ethnologists, and it was the reason for narrow interpretations of his theories. However, his books, articles and ideas are interesting and actual for modern social and philosophical anthropologists
Svarbiausi nagrinėjami autoriai: Auguste’as Comte’as, Karlas Marxas, Vladimiras Leninas, Otto Neurathas, Maxas Horkheimeris, Herbertas Marcuse, Jürgenas Habermasas. Pagrindiniai žodžiai: klasikinis pozityvizmas, klasikinis marksizmas, loginis pozityvizmas, kritinė teorija.Positivism and MarxismEvaldas Nekrašas
Summary The author analyses the relation between positivism and Marxism. He seeks to expose their common sources and interaction, similarities and differences and to demonstrate that, contrary to the common opinion, classical Marxism and classical positivism are not so much disparate. In the 19th century both philosophies shared scientistic and progressivist views, and this accounts for their many other resemblances. Yet in the 20th century, when classical positivism was replaced by logical positivism and the Neomarxist critical theory emerged, methodological orientations of both movements started to diverge more and more. The article explores the complicated history of relations between the Vienna Circle and the Frankfurt School and inquires into the Positivismusstreit. It ends with the conclusion that the majority of differences between positivism and Marxism stem from their different notions of experience. The author deals mainly with the views of Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Otto Neurath, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse, and Jürgen Habermas. Keywords: classical positivism, classical Marxism, logical positivism, critical theory
Parmenides: Justice as a Clue to the Nature of BeingSkirmantas Jankauskas
SummaryThe paper deals with the fundamental problem of philosophy – the problem of being. The research begins with the analysis of the famous poem of Parmenides where, for the first time in the Western tradition of philosophy, the being, apart from being just mentioned, is also provided with a logical foundation. It is demonstrated here that the logically attractive considerations of the second part of the poem both fail to substantiate the discovery of the being and give no hints about its content. The way to deal with the above mentioned problems is found in the typically ignored beginning of the poem. Clues for the explication of the mysterious proem are sought in some Plato’s dialogues. The chariot drawn by steeds in Parmenides’ poem is associated with the representation of the soul as a charioteer driving two steeds in Plato’s Phaedrus, and the ride towards the gates of Night and Day is associated with the concept of the “right way” in Plato’s Symposium respectively. However, attention is focused on Parmenides’ reference that the gate dividing Night and Day is guarded by Justice. An assumption is made that Plato exploits this reference while constructing his ideally just state. Failing to theoretically thematize virtue in Phaedrus, Plato blames writing which incorporates theory for its inability to assimilate the ethical content, but refuses to abandon this undertaking. It is supposed that in The Republic Plato continues his effort of theoretical thematization of virtue by trying to relate the latter to justice which is directly accessible by theory. In striving to enable justice to embrace the content of virtue, Plato is even compelled to make a virtueincorporating philosopher preside over his ideal state. Nonetheless, Plato fails to reach his direct objective in The Republic. However, the action of constructing ideal justice quite unexpectedly reveals the origin of being, i.e. its subordination to the Good. Keywords: being, virtue, justice, theory, truth, the beautiful, the good, society
Substantive and Procedural Dimensions of Practical Rationality Zenonas Norkus
SummaryThe article discusses the distinction between substantive and procedural rationality made by Herbert Simon, which has provided the conceptual framework for the empirical research on the boundaries of human rationality. In this research, two approaches with a different understanding of heuristics for cognition and choice are distinguished. In the first approach (David Kahneman, Amos Tversky), heuristics is interpreted as a source of the pathologies in human rationality. In the second (Gerd Gigerenzer), they are conceived as a means for an effective simulation of substantive rationality, making human behaviour ecologically rational. Discussing the reasons for this Janusfaced duplicity of heuristics, some ambiguities in the distinction between the procedural and substantive rationality are disclosed. This distinction may mean (1) the difference between the process and the product of information processing; (2) the distinction between correct but unpracticable alghoritms and incorrect but practical heuristics in information processing itself, and (3) between the form and the content (substance) in the problem solving behaviour. Another source of the problems with this distinction is reflexivity of the knowledge about rationality, i. e. the impact of the theories of rationality on their object (human rationality). FILOSOFIJOS ATSIRADIMAS LIETUVOJE
The Rise of Philosophy in Lithuania Romanas Plečkaitis
SummaryThe first Lithuanians to be introduced to philosophy were young members of the gentry who studied in European universities at the end of the 14th century. The recently baptized Lithuania strove to adopt Western culture and to present itself as a Western state. At the end of the 14th century, Vilnius Cathedral School was founded. The elements of logic were probably taught there. The growth of the political and economic power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania brought about the need for higher education. The need was significantly increased by the growing activity of various religious orders. In 1507, the Dominicans started teaching philosophy and theology to their novicies in Vilnius. They were able to teach late me dieval philosophy in its thomistic interpretation. We can regard 1507 as the year Lithuania benefited from a new phenomenon, professional philosophy, and the Dominicans as its initiators. The Dominicans and later the Jesuits, Franciscans, Bernardines, Carmelites, Trinitarians and other monastic orders enriched intellectual life in Lithuania by teaching philosophy in their schools. The most important event in the development of philosophy in Lithuania was the foundation of Vilnius University in 1579. The disciplines usual to second level scholastics were taught in its philosophy department.
