Kantian Conception of Experience and the Problem of the Limits of CognitionEdvardas Rimkus
SummaryThe article examines Kant’s conception of experience and its theoretical implication for the limits of cognition. It is argued that Kantian experience as a synthesis of sensory material and a priori forms is a cognition of phenomenal relations. Kant distances himself from transcendental metaphysics, he denies the possibility of transempirical knowledge and describes how the mind works in the immanent area. Kant’s transcendental theory of experience allows us to understand the epistemological apriorism as a creation of forms and models of cognition and explains the idea of a “thing-in-itself” as establishing the limits of empirical and metaphysical knowledge
SEEING AN IMAGE – BEING-IN-THE-WORLD: THE INTERCONNECTIONS BETWEEN VISUALITY, SPATIALITY, AND AGENCY IN PHILOSOPHICAL HERMENEUTICS
The article is dedicated to the revelation of heuristic potential of hermeneutic image conception within discussions on contemporary visual culture. H. G. Gadamer has analysed the image as the visual, spatial and social phenomenon expanding and thereby transforming the accustomed notion of iconic experience. The image is not primarily an object of research for aesthetics and art criticism, but a social phenomenon which has to be considered in its real and imagined character as well as in its interrelations with the lived world structures. By blurring boundaries between art and life in his image theory Gadamer opens up an array of opportunities for the analysis of iconic practices in all their variety: from science to theater. Keywords: Gadamer, image, philosophical hermeneutics, space, agency, social icons
I, 10 teksto fragmentu, laikomu paradigmine pakartojimo struktūros išsklaida.
AbstractThe purpose of this article is to reveal the nihilistic sense of an experiential structure, which has been distinctively rooted in Western philosophical tradition. On the one hand, this hermeneutical analysis will be based on a certain conception of nihilism presupposing two theoretical models of nihilism – nihilism, which refers to the theory of Überwindung, and nihilism associated with the idea of différance. On the other hand, it builds upon a certain (the so-called “onto-theological”) pretext, which might be used for recognition of the structure of repetition in Western tradition of thinking, – i.e. the fragment of a text from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians Eph. I, 10 – the paradigmatic passage proposing this universal structure of repetition. Focused both on philosophy of Kierkegaard and Agamben, hermeneutical analysis will aim to disclose the separate invariants of such repetition as cases of explosion of the mentioned text fragment. The question is raised – what is repetition? Where does its negativity lie? How does its nihilistic sense appear? How does the différance mediate in this process of revealing of negativity and nihilism? The article argues that difference, as a motion of negation representing nihilistic logic, can be treated both in merely formal and in a realistic way. The treating of différance as real denying in Kierkegaard’s and Agamben’s thinking corresponds to the ontological rootedness of the very structure of experience – repetition. Keywords: repetition, nihilism, différance, negativity, tim
New Media as an Alternative to the Classical Paradigm of EducationDarius Klibavičius
SummaryThe article focuses on the new media-based education as an alternative to the classical paradigm of education initiated by print culture. Therefore, the controversy between two media philosophy models is analysed here. One of these models refers to phonetic writing as a paradigmatic innovation which appeared in the Antiquity, while the other one is related to the emergence of electronic media in the Contemporary Age. Although the oral tradition was replaced by writing and handwriting culture by print, similarly the domination of the printed word is being displaced by the new electronic and digital media, each of these communication technologies is treated as a vastly important qualitative extension of the previous one. Thus, the article aims to answer the question of how these transformations have affected the teaching and learning environment, the learning process and students’ sensory experience. While the Antique education system was focused on the development of personality and the issues of reasons and causes, the Contemporary Age pays a lot of attention to the structures of electronic information as well as to the reflection of their consequences and effects
State of Exception and Divine Violence: The Crossroads between the Thought of Carl Schmitt and Walter BenjaminKasparas Pocius
SummaryAlready back in 1940 Walter Benjamin told us that “the ‘state of emergency’ in which we live is not the exception but the rule.” While invoking this claim, Giorgio Agamben enriches the contemporary biopolitical discourse with such concepts as ‘state of exception’ and ‘homo sacer’, which refer to bare lives of the majority of world population under contemporary capitalist and state rule. This paper, which seeks to analyse the work of Agamben, presents the notion of the state of exception by Carl Schmitt and counterposes it to the Benjaminian concept of divine violence. This counterposition allows to theoretically question the Schmittian politico-theological discourse which has been increasingly used by the conservative intellectuals and right-wing movements in the Eastern Europe, ‘the necessity of defending the nation and the state’ that they posit and to show the often concealed links between this discourse with biopower regimes. On the other hand, it is an attempt to point at a presence of multiple and radical constituent forces which, beyond liberal – constitutional and authoritarian – conservative frameworks of the State pose the threat to the political and economic order of late capitalism
Nuo biopolitikos prie biofilosofijos: M. Foucault, G. Agambenas, G. Deleuze’as
The essay analyzes the notions of biopolitics in Foucault’s and Agamben’s works. Foucault defines biopolitics as the result of the relationship between power and life, which has been changing constantly throughout history: the sovereign power has been replaced by disciplinary power, and the latter has been replaced by biopolitics. Foucault connects the emergence of biopolitics with the development of capitalism and economical processes, and this is why he prefers to speak in terms of political economy rather than political theory. By contrast, Agamben interprets biopolitics as a quasi-ontological condition: he claims that the production of biopolitical bodies which is legitimated by the state of exception characterizes both archaic empires and contemporary democracies. These negative notions of biopolitics necessarily raise the question of how the resistance to biopolitics is possible. Both Foucault and Deleuze point out that when power takes life as the object of its manipulation, it is life itself which is turned against power. It is important to stress that biopolitical power and the power of life are not different poles of the same power but are of different nature. Thus the power of life needs to be conceptualized in different terms which are taken from Deleuzian philosophy. The article seeks to define these terms and conceptualize the philosophy of life or biophilosophy, and in this way tries to answer the question of how resistance to power is possible. Tiek Foucault, tiek Gilles’is Deleuze’as teigia, kad galiai priešinasi būtent tai, ką ji siekia pajungti, – pati gyvybė.

AbstractThis article investigates the problem of egological consciousness and its connection with self-experience. By criticizing the conception of egological consciousness Gurwitsch and Sartre demonstrate that no foreign instance is neccecary to guarantee the unity of consciousness. By using that theory they claim that the ego, as a unifying entity for consciousness, does not exist. However, the intentionality of consciousness means not only its unity or focus on wordly objects, but also its self-givenness. Consciousness realizes itself as self-consciousness not only with the help of reflection as understood in classic philosophy but also by means of direct self-experience. The model of this kind of experience, which implicates self-experience, proposed by Husserl and other phenomenologists, is actualized today in the studies of Dan Zahavi. Reflection means distance to the self, but direct self-experience is a pre-reflective cogito. The aim of this artice is to reveal the connection between intentionality and egological self-experience, between selfgivenness of consciousness and a first-person perspective. The subconsciousness is insufficient as a consciousness determinating basis, because it supposes an outer connection of consciousness with subconsciousness. The consciousness should be understood not as a finished object, but as an intention to become conscious. Keywords: phenomenology, experience, subjectivity, ego, self-experience, consciousness, subconsciousnes
Escaping the Dream of the OtherKristupas Sabolius
SummaryDealing with the changing nature of visuality in contemporary world, this article aims to examine the possibility of producing, classifying, and implanting dreams into one’s mind. Based on Deleuze’s, Horkheimer’s, Adorno’s, Candau’s, and Zizek’s views as well as a few Hollywood films, this work diagnoses the crucial role of cultural industries in duplicating the function of transcendental schematism, as new technologies take over Kant’s transcendental imagination. These processes are implemented through a new form of visual existence – iconorrhea, a rhythmical, repetitive and excessive flux of images, circulating on the screens of public sphere. This paper raises the rhetorical question concerning the possibility of deliverance from this situation, i.e. how can one escape the dream of the Other
The Concepts of Time and Space in the Philosophy of Education: From Science Pedagogy toward Everyday PracticeLilija Duoblienė
SummaryThe article analyses the understanding of the concepts of time and space as structures of contemporary social and personal life and how these concepts are applied in education. The starting point for the investigation of the definitions of time and space lies in Michel Foucault’s theory about disciplining of society and repressive pedagogy, which was later developed by Michel de Certeau, Gilles Deleuze, Maarten Simons, Jan Masschelein. While Simons and Masschelein continue to develop the idea of social disciplining through the new modern practices, de Certeau and Deleuze give alternative interpretations of how to escape social manipulations and limitations of personal life. De Certeau explains the transformations of time and space structures from the perspective of mapping individual trajectory. Deleuze pays more attention to the variety of possibilities in the process of creative encountering and space-shifting through an event. The analysis of the concepts of time and space enables an explanation of modernization of repressive contemporary education and allows turning from the critical point of view towards creative approach to education
METAETIKA KAIP ROMANTIZMO FORMA
Straipsnis skiriamas metaetikos kritikai. Metaethics as a Form of RomanticismAlvydas Jokubaitis
SummaryThis paper presents a critique of metaethics. It is an attempt at deepening the critique proposed by Ronald Dworkin, which is in some respects limited and inconsistent. Dworkin is right in saying that metaethics is based on the epistemological premises of the Enlightenment, but it has to be pointed out that he overlooks the influence of Romanticism. Metaethics can be understood as a form of romantic thinking. There is a widespread consensus according to which this discipline is linked with the ideas of the Enlightenment. The aim of this paper is to prove that metaethics is based on premises which are romantic.Philosophers doing metaethics cut off all links between established concepts, revolt against common sense, retreat into a realm of ideas, strive for novelties and originality, get lost between incompatible viewpoints and antinomies. They want to find something new and unexpected behind daily phenomena. Works of metaethics are different from impressionistic pieces of art, but their guiding attitude is the same. The main difference is that the artists do not deny their relationship with Romanticism, whereas philosophers doing metaethics never openly talk of such relations. Metaethics is a disguised form of Romanticism. The principle that Carl Schmitt called “subjectified occasionalism” is operational in both cases
