Fribūro universitetas ir lietuvių veiklos Šveicarijoje reikšmė XX amžiaus pradžioje
The activity of Lithuanian emigres in Switzerland until 1918 still lacks attention of Lithuanian historians. If we wanted to analyse the development of Lithuanian organizations before World War I, we should consider three different aspects, examining them in parallel. Firstly, we ought to analyse the social and cultural environment in which these organisations started their activities. In this case, the context is the environment of the Catholic University in Fribourg, Switzerland. Secondly, we should examine the segments of society, which were the most enthusiastic concerning the actions towards the cultural and political independence of Lithuania. Therefore, we are interested in the high ranking clergy who were studying in Fribourg before and during the World War I. Thirdly, it is very important to highlight the input of each person who had participated in the activities of these organisations and had been leading them to success. In this analysis we have chosen two persons to represent this perspective: Dr. Juozas Purickis and Vladas Daumantas-Dzimidavičius.The University of Fribourg, which was established in 1889 by the Catholic clergy and local authorities, became a popular place to study theology as well as humanities from the very beginning of its operation. The young people from all over Europe gathered in this university to gain knowledge and respond actively to the challenges of modern society. Lithuanians, who belonged to the Western part of Russian Empire back then, also travelled to Fribourg for their studies from the first years of the 20th century. The period of the years 1913–1918 was very intense in the life of Lithuanian student organizations because several of them were established, reorganized and even expanded. The works of these associations were influential not only in local Lithuanian student community, but also in the activities of other Lithuanian organizations and their development. Lithuanian students in Switzerland participated in the endowment of prisoners of war and in the works of pro-Lithuanian press. The young priests, who came in touch with Lithuanian Information Office and its chief dr. Juozas Gabrys, soon joined this organization and began to participate in various Lithuanian and international assemblies. Moreover, Juozas Purickis and Vladas Daumantas distinguished themselves in the creation of symbols of the state and in making projects for future Lithuania’s statehood, which soon became a visible reality.
The article analyses how different social and political groups of interwar Lithuania perceived the on-going agrarian reform, what were their motives behind the decisions to expropriate the estate of landowners and to compensate the loss, how the landowners tried to influence the process of preparation and implementation of the agrarian reform.
Testaments of 20 persons – 6 women and 14 men – are found in the 17th century court registers from the jurisdiction of the Vilnius Castle supervisor. These historical sources complement our knowledge concerning this poorly researched community, particularly in relation to the matters of religion, material status, and social ties. Of all testators and testatrices, 12 persons belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, and five, to the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg confession. Of particular interest are the testaments of Anna and Hanus Meler, a Lutheran couple who left some money to Catholic hospitals as well. The relations among people of different confessions can also be seen in the selection of witnesses: the last will of Anna Meler was attested by the representatives of Lutheranism, Roman Catholicism, and Calvinism. The material status of testatrices and testators varied a lot. Among them, we can find people relatively well-off, including those who had servants, and poor ones, although not complete paupers. However, even those whose situation was not too difficult could not be considered rich. As such, it is obvious that the estate was not bestowed upon a large group of beneficiaries – the number of inheritors was one to five, and sometimes some additional bequests for church institutions were made. The most important thing was to provide financial security for the closest family. As a means of arranging additional security for their widows and orphans, the deceased appointed guardians who were supposed to look after the legal and economic well-being of these relatives. This function was entrusted upon dependable persons: relatives, neighbours, colleagues. The testaments of the subjects of the Vilnius Castle supervisor’s jurisdiction clearly show the complexity of the network of various relations formed by the inhabitants of this small but at the same time varied community in many respects (e.g. professionally, materially, and religiously).
Translated by Agata StaszewskaXVII amžiaus Vilniaus pilininko jurisdikos teismo knygose įrašyti dvidešimties asmenų – šešių moterų ir keturiolikos vyrų – testamentai.
The article explores badges of the Lithuanian Catholic Youth Union “Pavasaris”. The Union “Pavasaris”, the Federation from 1933, was one of the most numerous organizations in Lithuania in 1919–1940. During the entire period of its existence, the organization changed the design of its members’ badges three times: in 1920, 1925 and 1935. Different labels for men, girls, and young members were made the third time. In addition to the badges of the Organization, commemorative badges were issued as well. In 1924, the first Song Festival was held in Šiauliai, and choristers and conductors of the event were given commemorative badges. In 1927, the 2nd Song Festival was organized, and its conductors, choir leaders, and choristers were also handed out badges. In 1938, the congress was held to commemorate 25 years of the Federation. All participants of the Congress were given special commemorative badges. Moreover, the “Pavasaris” Federation produced special badges for the magazine “Pavasaris” most ardent distributors in 1934.
The Union “Pavasaris” also took part in sports activities. Together along with other organizations it set up a sports organization Catholic LGSF (Lithuanian Gymnastics and Sports Federation), and the Federation purchased badges in 1929.„Pavasario“ sąjunga, o nuo 1933 m. federacija, buvo didžiausia narių skaičiumi organizacija Lietuvoje 1919–1940 m.
The article seeks to evaluate problems linked with understanding of the sequence of events in the battle of Žalgiris in modern Polish historiography, first of all, in “Wojna Polski i Litwy z zakonem krzyżackim w latach 1409–1411”. Sven Ekdahl’s methodical provisions – a necessity to follow strict critique of the sources as well as the Middle Ages warfare realties – were chosen as the basis for evaluation. “Wojna Polski i Litwy” by the Polish authors discusses all the significant aspects of the battle: battleground location, leadership of the allies, separate entry of Lithuanian and Polish forces into the battle, Lithuanian feigned retreat manoeuvre/flight and Polish fight after the Lithuanian army’s retreat, losses etc. However, concerning the fundamental battle course of action, Annals of Długocz remain to be the most reliable source. That is why it is thought that the battle took place between the ruins of the chapel which was built to remember those killed in battle and the lake of Lauben. Moreover, the Polish forces are thought to have joined the battle almost at the same time as Lithuanians did, Lithuanians fled the battleground (though not as far as Lithuania), the remaining Poles forces had a long fight until they faced the Grand Master’s faction and the victory against them was achieved without the support of Lithuanian forces.Concerning warfare, the authors of “Wojna Polski i Litwy” agree that it is necessary to delve deeper into the structure of the army, as well as battle tactics. However, they hesitate to follow Ekdahl’s proposed model, which states that banners too weak to operate independently are grouped into fighting regiments (“Schlachthaufen”), and the latter joined into three echelons (“Treffen”). Instead, a banner is still considered a tactical unit. Furthermore, the authors are undecided if they should adopt Ekdahl and Nadolski’s estimated wedge shape formation, like one of the two alternatives where the next one would be grouping in lines. In conclusion it could be stated that despite some progress the “Polish-Lithuanian War” does not digress from the traditional version of the battle by S. M. Kuczyński. Is this the spell of Długocz or “Polska Ludowa”?Straipsnyje siekiama įvertinti Žalgirio problemų, susijusių su mūšio eiga, suvokimą naujausioje lenkų istoriografijoje, visų pirma 2010 m. veikale „Lenkijos ir Lietuvos karas su Vokiečių ordinu 1409–1411 metais“.

In the end of the 14th–15th c., 250 full private documents written in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were known. In the end of the 14th century, early private documents were approved by the issuer seal, list of witnesses and the scribe direction. However, eventually it was not consistently observed. The research shows obvious differences which confirm not only different types of documents, but also different writing traditions (Latin and Ruthenian). For example, a bigger part of the Latin private documents (donations, sales, testimonies, etc.) were approved by the seal of one issuer, but the Ruthenian practice of sales documents approval was ambivalent. Since their emergence (from the middle of the 15th c.), one part of documents were approved only by the issuer seal and the other part by the issuers’ and witnesses’ seals together. Since the 8th decade of the 15th century, the biggest part of Ruthenian sales was approved by issuer and witnesses seals. The Latin sales were stamped only by the issuer, but at the end of the 15th century there several sales which were approved by the seals of the listed witnesses (obviously it was the influence of the Ruthenian practice). Also, the article analyzes the use of the list of witnesses, the recording of clericals and secular officials, the practice of notaries, scribes’ naming, and others.Straipsnio tikslas – ištirti seniausių žinomų privačių dokumentų patvirtinimo priemonių panaudojimą Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje nuo XIV a. pabaigos iki XV a. pabaigos. Empirinę medžiagą sudarė daugiau nei 250 privačių dokumentų. Pagrindinės dokumentų patvirtinimo priemonės: antspaudavimas, liudininkų ir raštininko nurodymas, rečiau notaro patvirtinimas. Dokumentų patvirtinimo skirtumai sietini tiek su skirtingomis dokumentų rūšimis, tiek su skirtingomis raštijos tradicijomis
