Vienuolynai kaip „pelno ekonomikos“ lopšys ankstyvųjų moderniųjų laikų Vidurio ir Rytų Europos miestų aplinkoje: pranciškonų atvejis XVII amžiaus antrosios pusės–XVIII amžiaus Vilniuje
[article in English; abstract and key words in English and Lithuanian]
This paper analyzes the economic activities of the Conventual Franciscans in the early modern urban society of Vilnius from the second part of the 17th until the end of the 18th centuries. We ask the key question whether the Franciscans had embraced the “profit economy” in a similar way that Lester K. Little famously portrayed them do in the Latin Christendom at the end of the medieval ages. This paper will look at the economic model of the Franciscan order based on their income and expenses books, and it will delve into their key economic activities: financial services and property management.[straipsnis anglų kalba; santrauka ir reikšminiai žodžiai anglų ir lietuvių kalba]
Straipsnyje analizuojama pranciškonų konventualų ekonominė veikla ankstyvųjų moderniųjų laikų Vilniuje nuo XVII a. antrosios pusės iki XVIII a. pabaigos. Keliamas klausimas, ar pranciškonai gali būti laikomi „pelno ekonomikos“ propaguotojais ankstyvųjų moderniųjų laikų Vilniuje, panašiai kaip juos apibūdino Lester K. Little vėlyvųjų viduramžių krikščioniškojo pasaulio miestuose. Straipsnyje, remiantis pranciškonų pajamų ir išlaidų knygomis, analizuojamas jų ekonominės veiklos modelis ir keletas pagrindinių ekonominių veiklų – finansinės paslaugos bei nekilnojamojo turto valdymas
Buitinio gyventojų aptarnavimo kombinatas kaip socialistinės Lietuvos buities modernizacijos elementas
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
The domestic services center was a new type of building created in USSR in the late 1950s. The USSR Communist party and its new party program, adopted in 1961, were the main influences of creating this new function building. The goals set in this program were the following ones: to provide Soviet citizens with domestic, cultural and social welfare and to release women from domestic concerns. To achieve these goals, the USSR Communist party was running a mass housing campaign and creating a tiered system of the adaptation of public cultural and consumer services in living areas – the so-called mikrorayons. One of the most important elements of the system was the domestic services center. It was designated for all cities in Soviet Lithuania to have a main domestic services center. The functions performed by it were to take care of the accessibility of household services to all residents in the district. Also, the domestic services center was a building that offered the highest amount of household services. In order to fulfill people’s daily needs and expand the network of consumer services, domestic services centers constantly experimented with the assortment of certain services. To attract more clients, the Ministry of Consumer Services made big efforts to create a unified visualization of consumer service facilities. Moving to the architectural part, all buildings of the tiered system of public cultural and consumer services had to be built according to standardized designs in the early period of the mass housing program. But later, in the 1970s and 1980s, they were replaced by individual designs. However, the domestic services center often used to be incorporated in the center of a mikrorayon. It had to house all the facilities residents might need on a daily basis. Individual designs of domestic services center might have architectural value, but urban value is also important. The domestic services center is an element of household modernization through urban planning in socialistic Lithuania.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]

While bioarchaeological monastery researches draw substantial differences between the secular and monastic lifestyles, the former injury rate indicates no shocking results. A relatively small number of fractures demonstrated that monks were not predisposed to injuries due to their specific lifestyle and daily activities. In 2015 and 2016, an archaeological investigation at The Holy Trinity church and its crypt revealed 17th–18th century burials belonging to the Basilian monks. These findings provided a unique opportunity to study the monastic lifestyle in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania based on the tendencies of trauma. Common rib fractures, violent injuries and high-energy trauma painted a vivid and unusual life picture of the 17th–18th century Basilian monastery of Vilnius.
In this study, the term of urbanization is understood in a broad sense, not only as the concentration of the population in cities or urban planning, but as a process closely linked to modernization and broad social changes during the transition period from agrarian (rural) to industrial (urban) society, which were changing everyday life, social relations and identity forms. The aim of this work – to investigate the processes of internal migration from countryside to the cities and social and cultural consequences of urbanization related to it. The article analyzes the demographic indicators of urban change and municipal policy in the face of growing urbanization. We intended to discover what were the signs of the modern city in general and whether these metropolitan cultural changes were felt in Lithuania.Šiame tyrime urbanizacijos terminas suprantamas ne vien kaip gyventojų koncentracija miestuose, bet ir modernizacijos procesas, plačios socialinės permainos pereinamuoju laikotarpiu iš agrarinės (kaimiškos) į pramoninę (miesto) visuomenę, kurios keitė kasdienį gyvenimą, socialinius ryšius ir tapatumo formas. Darbo tikslas – įvertinti urbanizacijos sąlygotus demografinius ir infrastruktūrinius miestų pokyčius 1918–1940 m. Lietuvoje.
This article analyzes what perceptions of children and childhood were offered in the public pedagogical discourse of the late Soviet period in Lithuania (1962–1984), whether these perceptions are created only in the pedagogical idea of Soviet Lithuania or are they receptive to the changes of Soviet pedagogy and educational psychology in all of the former Soviet Union. The research shows that children, in the pedagogical discourse of the late Soviet period in Lithuania, were perceived as psychologically complex, consciously involved in the educational process and requiring a personalized approach to their upbringing. All these perceptions were common to the late Soviet pedagogical theory in Soviet Russia. The popularization of the concept of vocational education in Soviet pedagogy in the sixties also had influence on hyperbolizing childhood as a place and time of preparation for adult life. Finally, the article aims to reveal how pedagogy reconceptualizes the perception of normally/abnormally behaved children and whether this approach offers the image of a totally integrated or rehabilitated child that has either psychological or social problems. The last chapter of the article also tries to prove that the late Soviet pedagogical discourse steps back from the “happy Soviet childhood” and shows a more complex and layered image of Soviet childhood.

This article analyzes the Lithuanian national TV series cycle Our Towns for the first time in Lithuanian historiography. The research object was chosen because of the phenomenon of this TV series in the context of Lithuanian audiovisual historical culture. This TV series, which has been on the air for more than 25 years, has received considerable resonance in the public and is to be regarded as a kind of visual “Encyclopedia” of Lithuanian towns – the focus of which has always been (and still is) the disclosure of the current situation of culture, natural diversity and historical identity of Lithuanian towns. This article aims to reveal the phenomenon of the content of TV series cycle, showing its versatility to deny its assessments which are very much one-sided. The following issues are essential: How the spirit of a town is perceived in this TV series cycle? Who are considered to be the “bearers” of a small-town spirit? What events, individuals, social groups, and other relevant elements construct the past of a town? This article reveals that the spirit of towns in the Our Towns TV series is related to the pre-Soviet past or the tradition that testifies the continuity of this past. In Our Towns, the main “bearers” of a former place of spirit are the old dwellers of towns or their offspring, those who took over the values and traditions of their predecessors. The recording and showing of their memories – which form the core of these TV series – is perhaps the biggest element of value in Our Towns. The similarity of towns pasts suggests the notion of a unique place for us, which is close to the concept generated by the creators of this TV cycle – the towns are unique because they are our own, inherited, close to heart and identifiable. This feeling of commonality, similarity and identity perhaps is the reason why so many people like to watch the Our Towns TV series.
