In this study, housing modernization campaigns of the interwar and Soviet periods are examined through the declared value system and public relations programs. The interwar period and the Soviet period were absolutely opposite in terms of politics, ideology, economy and many other aspects. But in talking about the modernization campaign of housing and the everyday life, we can find many surprising similarities. The aim of this study is to examine the fundamental similarities and differences of the two modernization campaigns. We can state that the aesthetic and functional values were exactly the same during both of the campaigns, the main two differences being that during the interwar period, the campaign was geared toward Western culture as a way of integration. In the case of the Soviet period, the idea of modernization, as a Western “product,” was rejected. The second main difference can be seen regarding the state’s involvement in the campaign of public modernization: during the interwar period, the state’s participation was less important than that of the private initiatives; on the other hand, during the Soviet period, the role of the state become crucial.

The main aim of this article is to discuss the Holocaust in Lithuania as it appears in the discourse of Western historiography. This aim and the structure of this article have two goals: first, to discuss the Western historiographic perspective on the Holocaust during the period of the Cold War; second, to review the shifts in the historiography after the Cold War and the Fall of the Soviet Union. The first chapter of this article underlines that during the first period, the historiography of the Holocaust was mainly based on the sources of the Trials of the Major War Criminals (the Nuremberg Trials) and the legal proceedings during the subsequent years. This provided the foundation for historians to write studies about the Holocaust. However, these studies focused mainly on the criminal character of the Nazi party, the military and security forces, while the voices of the victims were silenced – at least until the Eichmann Trial; in addition, the question about the collaboration of locals in the Final Solution during the German occupation was also kept out. It should be underlined that this narrative was quite suitable for those Lithuanians who lived in Western Europe or the US, as it mainly stressed the guilt of the Nazi Germans. The Fall of the Soviet Union initiated a significant shift in the research of the Holocaust in Lithuania. The main factor of this shift was the opening of the archives in Eastern Europe, which provided the conditions to carry out research on the Holocaust in Lithuania. These studies made new conclusions about the relations between Lithuanians and Jews, anti-Semitism in Lithuania, the anti-Soviet underground and its anti-Semitic attitudes, the first pogroms in German-occupied Lithuania during the first days of the War against the Soviet Union etc. This shift pushed the topic of the Holocaust in Lithuania to the top of the priorities of the agenda of Western historians and, in the broader sense, of the whole research centered around the persecution and eradication of the European Jews. Būtent šis laikotarpis, prasidėjęs XX a. paskutiniame dešimtmetyje, Vakarų istorikų dėmesį nukreipė į Rytų Europą, o Lietuvą padarė vienu iš svarbiausių holokausto tyrėjų vykdomų tyrimų objektu

Lietuvos ir Belgijos prekybiniai ryšiai 1923–1940 metais

Economic relations between the Republic of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Belgium in 1923–1940 had well exceeded their political cooperation. Before the Great Depression, mutual trading went by a free-market model. Two important impulses for the mutual cooperation were the introduction of the Litas (Lt), a stable Lithuanian currency, and the transfer of the Klaipėda region (Memelland), including its port, under Lithuanian governance in 1923. Most exports and imports went through the ports of Klaipėda (Memel) and Antwerp. In 1923–1925, Lithuanian exports to Belgium reached 2.5–2.8 million Lt, while imports from Belgium varied around 1–2.6 million Lt.In 1929, both exports and imports increased to 4–5 million Lt each.Traded goods reflected the type of economy and the actual needs of both people and business. At first, Lithuanian exports to Belgium consisted of domestic birds and animals, especially horses, flax seeds and fibres as well as various woods. Eventually, Belgium imported more and more processed agricultural products, like grain, butter and flax fibre. Otherwise, from the very first days of cooperation, Lithuania did import a great amount of raw iron and synthetic fertilizers, later on – building materials, like cement and glass, gears for textile production and raw materials. Oddly enough, the successful and stable growth of trading relations was not impeded by late official regulation, which had been committed just in 1928–1932. As for the main regulation, there was used a short Temporary Agreement between Lithuania and the Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union. Procedures for solving legal issues on trading were regulated on a deeper level.Since 1930, economic relations became more complicated, influenced by quotas and restrictions, yet the circulation of Lithuanian-Belgian exports and imports usually passed 6–7 million Lt; in some years, it had even reached 10 million Lt. As theLithuanian-German economic relations declined, Belgium became the fourth-fifth trading partner by its importance for Lithuanian economics. Trading had depended on water traffic; thus, the Second World War greatly disturbed further economic cooperation. It was totally broken by the occupations of Lithuania and Belgium, which happened in May–June 1940.Lietuvos Respublikos ir Belgijos Karalystės prekybiniai ryšiai 1923–1940 m. gerokai pranoko jų politinį bendradarbiavimą.

Kam reikia istorijos didaktikos istorijos (ne pedagogikos) studijose?

[article in Lithuanian; abstract and key words in English] The purpose of this article is to answer the following question: why is history didactics needed in history (non-pedagogic) studies? The article begins with the existing definitions of the concepts of the didactics and history didactics as well as their statuses as academic disciplines. Further attention is paid to the German program of history didactics, an acquaintance with which has caused certain changes in the study programs at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University. The article concludes with a discussion of the reception of the German ideas in the studies of this faculty. The novelty of the article can be seen in the first attempt to scientifically legitimize the teaching of the history of didactics in history studies and to dispute the tradition, a popular one in Lithuania, of dissociating the research on teaching from the studies of historical consciousness, historical culture, memory etc. The article revealed that studies of history (non-pedagogy) can be substantially enriched by those history didactics that, with the help of the categories of historical consciousness and historical culture, treat history teaching (learning) as a part of daily communication and as an integral aspect of human life practice. Such a concept is typical of the German program of history didactics, associated with the 1960s and 1970s. The German program of history didactics was chosen as a theoretical basis when constructing the subject of history didactics for the Master’s Program in History (1997) of the Faculty of History in Vilnius University and when constructing the subject (later the module) of history didactics for the Bachelor’s Program in Cultural History and Anthropology (2003, 2012). German theory presents not only the framework for subject/module themes but it also serves as a theoretical basis that allows to conceptually combine the problems of historical consciousness, academic history, historical culture and school history. It is likely that the concept of history didactics, which goes beyond the school limits, will eventually return the consideration of conceptual issues to the discipline of Lithuanian history didactics.[straipsnis lietuvių kalba; santrauka ir reikšminiai žodžiai anglų kalba] Straipsniu siekiama atsakyti į klausimą, kam reikia istorijos didaktikos istorijos (ne pedagogikos) studijose?
