The article describes a research project conducted in Sweden and its initial base-line results that were produced by investigating statistical data from general statistical sources, representative surveys of the Swedish population, and from public and academic libraries. The project looks into the change introduced into the book sector by e-books. Sweden was chosen as a special case – a country with a high literacy level and high penetration of information technology into everyday life of people. At the same time, the spread of e-books is at the very start and it seems that the diffusion of e-books, their production, distribution and use are affected by the problems characteristic of a typical small publishing markets. The authors present the goals of the project and the theoretical framework. The data were collected in 2012 and demonstrate the relatively low scale of e-book publishing and use. Libraries emerge as the main channel of access to e-books for readers. The usual problems of e-book production and distribution that are visible in other countries are observed in Sweden as well: e-books legally are not books, but services of licensed software and thus excluded from the privileges enjoyed by paper books; readers demand more e-books but are not ready to pay for them the same price as for traditional books and prefer to acquire them through free channels. Publishers seek to maintain the monopoly of e-book distribution and fear piracy. Libraries lose independence of acquisition and collection management. The choice of e-books by readers is determined by access to technology, age and education as well as reading habits.KEYWORDS: digital books, Sweden, publishing industry, reading, book distribution, librariesSwedish School of Library and Information [email protected] University of Borå[email protected] Högskolan i Borås, SE-501 90 Borås, [email protected] University of Gothenburg,[email protected] Göteborgs universitet, Seminariegatan 1B,[email protected] Straipsnyje aprašomas Švedijoje atliekamo mokslinio tyrimo projektas ir pradiniai rezultatai, gauti tyrinėjant statistinius duomenis, surinktus iš bendrųjų statistinių šaltinių, reprezentatyvių Švedijos gyventojų apklausų ir viešųjų bei akademinių bibliotekų.

Distribution of publications by university publishers is considered one of the most complicated spheres of publishing activities because of its particularities. It requires not only attention (support) from the State, but also much effort from the publisher. Today we often stress the status of the university, development of possibilities of the academic publisher and distribution of scientific publications. It makes us think of the relationship between commercial and noncommercial activity in cultural space and discuss effectiveness of distribution of academic books and communication. It should be stressed that from the scientific point of view distribution of publications of university publishers is still an unexplored sphere. We lack theoretic literature and relevant information. There is almost no information about the distribution of publications delivered by university publishers. Our research involved 15 state university publishing houses that were financed by the state budget. The research was based on archival documents, data basis of university publishers, etc. (press, virtual space). The method of interview was chosen (a halfstandardized interview). People from university publishing houses responsible for distribution were interviewed (15 persons) and a questionnaire was made up (24 open questions). The research revealed their possibilities and attitude towards the distribution of books. The aim of the article was to investigate the space of production distribution within the university and outside it in order to reveal particularities of this distribution. The distribution analysed covers the period 1991–2011, but the main attention was paid to book distribution in the recent years in order to stress the importance of the present situation experienced by university publishers. The first part of the article looks for the answer whether university publishers have any model of book distribution. After determining relations among the elements of distribution structure, the scheme of the system of book distribution was established. The second part investigates the situation from an outward perspective, namely, exploring how university publishers are able to use the possibilities of free-market, looking for distribution methods, ways and forms as well as highlighting some peculiarities of distribution of academic books. It was found that the distribution space of publications delivered by contemporary university publishers could be divided into two groups. The first group covers non-commercial distribution system inside the university that was formed in the long-term book distribution culture and experience gained by university publishers. The second group is related to commercial distribution system outside the university that for a long time had been closed; only now it is little by little directed towards commercialization. This shows that in the twenty years of the Independent Lithuania, university publishers have experienced some changes in the distribution of their books. These changes were determined by political and economical conditions, fast development of information and communication technologies and alternations of public communicational processes.Summarising the research, peculiarities of book distribution by university publishers must be stressed. These peculiarities determine the particularity of this distribution process, distinguishing the following three dominating components: scientific product (specific item), institution (departmental subordination), the publisher‘s initiative (the need to change). These components make the basis of the general distribution of publications by university publishers. Vilniaus universiteto Knygotyrosir dokumentotyros institutasUniversiteto g. 3, LT-01513 Vilnius, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected] Straipsnyje analizuojami Lietuvos valstybinių universitetinių leidyklų spausdintinės produkcijos sklaidos probleminiai klausimai. Siekiama atskleisti šių leidyklų šiandienos leidinių sklaidos erdvę ir nusakyti universitetų leidybinės produkcijos platinimo tendencijas pačiuose universitetuose ir už jų ribų. Remiantis atliktu tyrimu konstruojama knygų sklaidos schema, atskleidžiami ir nagrinėjami universitetų leidyklų produkcijos sklaidos ypatumai.Tyrimu nustatyta, kad šiuolaikinių universitetinių leidyklų produkcijos sklaidos erdvė padalyta į dvi dalis: nekomercinę (leidinių sklaidos sistema universiteto viduje), kuri suformuota ilgametės universitetų leidybinės produkcijos sklaidos kultūros ir patirties, ir į komercinę (leidinių sklaidos sistema už universiteto ribų), kuri ilgą laiką buvusi uždara, dabar pamažu kreipiama komercializacijos link. Tai rodo, kad universitetų leidyklosper daugiau nei dvidešimt Lietuvos nepriklausomybės metų patyrė knygų sklaidos pokyčių, kuriuos lėmė naujos politinės ir ekonominės sąlygos, sparti informacinių, komunikacinių technologijų raidos ir komunikacijos procesųtinklaveikos visuomenėje kaita. REIKŠMINIAI ŽODŽIAI: universitetas, leidykla, leidiniai, sklaida, platinimas, leidybinė produkcija, mokslinė produkcija, knygos, knygynas, interneto svetainė, vartotojai, institucija, mažmeniniai platintojai, didmeniniai platintojai

In our contemporary world, when new technologies are becoming more and more intensive, the habits of media users are inevitably changing. The practical behaviour of media users is altering in such a way that passive receivers of information are now becoming active mediate users. Due to this dramatic transformation, the situation of new media has become interminable. It means that evident changes have not yet acquired their final determination or any stable theoretical background or explanation. However, we must not forget the elementary scientific and practical truth that every new expression of the media in all ages (from spoken word, books, newspapers, magazines to the internet) is formed on the basis of practical expressions as well as on valuable theoretical discourse. The prospect of the evolution of practical media and of communicational sciences shows that media of the past influences the recent media. This universal axiom of science and culture can be considered an evident factor which is a starting point for any discourse on our social or cultural experience as well as on the socio-cultural future prospects. The article discusses the problem of the possibility for the user-creator of new media – the internet, to make an effective use of postmodern cinema practice and theory (by Gilles Deleuze) in order to understand the trajectory of both practical and transcendent thinking. Deleuze states that the postmodern European cinema has become a conceptual instrument, which stimulates the spectator to create his own meanings, because they are not provided directly. At the cinema, long plan-sequences, which have not yet undergone any montage cuttings, provide every help for constructing one’s own narration based on the cinematographical material. The spectator has to search for a hidden meaning and in a way he has to make a psychological analysis of himself. This kind of research stimulates the prolific imagination and creativity of the spectator. This new situation enables the user of the media to become an active and responsible creator of proper life, when innumerable choices are opening before his eyes. Therefore, if we have in mind these consistent patterns and analogically consider new media user’s situation, it is possible to agree with Manovich, that the everyday users of the internet are able and have to create a meaningful narrative for themselves, if only they care for the problem of meaning. A new media user does it in a similar way as a creator of classical cinema; which means that as a user of new media he gets his single plans from a data base and then he constructs his structure of sintagma-story-narrative. Deleuze’s theory was dealing with the problem of space montage inside the cinema camera object-glass long before the internet appeared. On the whole, the theories of the modern cinema can be helpful for a better understanding of newest internet media and for its influence on the conscious and subconscious mind of modern man. In other words, the ideological weight of classical cinema is getting smaller, while the weight of creative power stimulated by the internet in creative personalities is becoming greater.

    No full text
The examination of culture poses a demand for a dialectical reflection on the homology of local and global cultures as a resource to be preserved not only by conservation, but also by future upgrading. Publishing as an industry has a direct impact on both of these segments of culture as a resource or, in other words, through its production, publishing simultaneously conserves the existing cultural values and also upgrades them. Owing to these qualities, publishing has two roles – one pertains to the market in question, whereas the other pertains to culture. These qualities are intertwined within the cultural and creative industry, a sector which is now emerging in Croatia. Another important role within the sector of cultural and creative industry belongs to the book, which is a product of the publishing industry. This research regards the book as a product of the publishing industry for which an attractive niche in the market should be found and takes the position that from the sales perspective, a potential reader, i.e. a future consumer of this cultural good, should be approached in an understandable and efficient manner. This means that the function of the book is also twofold (both a cultural and an economic good). Therefore, the book demands a comprehensive x approach that combines local and global cultures around the fact that it is precisely the book that is the basic means by which language capital of a specific cultural identity, as well as cultural diversity on a global scale, is nurtured.KEYWORDS: publishing, literature, cultural good, cultural and creative industry, culture, art.Department of Information Sciences,[email protected] Ivana Ljevak Lebeda University of ZadarUlica dr.

The paper analyses three important social and cultural trends that reinforced reading in English in non-English-speaking countries. First, English became the lingua franca of academia, and the simultaneous explosive growth of tertiary education increased the number of English speakers globally. Second, English became the language of popular culture and, as such, now dominates global bestseller production. Third, due to the growth of Amazon and other online retailers of electronic and printed books, books in English became readily available in most non-English-speaking countries. The paper will show that in Anglo–Saxon book markets, ebooks have a different cultural role than in continental Europe and other non-English-speaking countries. In the former, ebooks are becoming a mainstream medium for reading fiction. Contrastingly, in the latter, they seem to be predominantly the domain of bilingual readers, and mainstream book markets in local languages remain heavily dominated by printed books. As a result, in contemporary book cultures, printed books and e-books coexist in a kind of dual economy. In Anglo–Saxon markets, this coexistence takes place inside the same linguistic ecosystem, while in non-English-speaking countries, for the time being, the chasm between print and digital bears a strong linguistic mark and consequently represents a new cultural phenomenon. There seem to be cognitive differences between on-paper and onscreen reading; therefore, the paper concludes with the observation that, behind this dual economy, a deeper cultural schism might be hidden, putting the academic exploration of publishing studies and the book market at the centre of a new research paradigm.KEYWORDS: global English, books, e-books, book market, publishing studies, publishing field, onscreen reading, reading.University of Ljubljana, School of Arts and HumanitiesAškerčeva 2, 1000 Ljubljana, SloveniaE-mail: [email protected] Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos trys svarbios socialinės ir kultūrinės kryptys, sustiprinusios skaitymą anglų kalba ne angliškai kalbančiose šalyse.

Martynas Jankus (1858–1946) is a famous worker of Lithuanian press in Prussia, a participant of national movement, a politician who supported bringing together two parts of the Lithuanian nation separated by the borders between German and Russian empires. Over more than 40 years he had published and printed 395 non-periodical and 27 periodical publications in Lithuanian and some in German and Byelorussian languages. Among the authors of these publications, there were many significant representatives of Lithuanian and other nations: writers, ethnologists, historians, Protestant theologians and politicians. Jankus’ personality was formed by the life style of a peasant family, social environment of his native Bitėnai village and the pressure of national discrimination affecting the indigenous people. He attended only a primary school and later self-educated himself by reading voratiously literature about Lithuania and Lithuanians. Lithuanian newspapers and especially the works by Georg Sauerwein, a defender of the interests of small nations in the German empire, published in them have increased his motivation for social activity. The active political movement of the end of the 19th century and the election campaigns to the Prussian Landtag and German Reichstag directly influenced his decision to participate in publishing. In 1879–1888 he published several leaflets in support of Lithuanian candidates, some books, pamphlets and calendars for the cultural education of Lithuanians. Among these publications Jankus included his own collections of original and folk poetry as well as prose translated from German and Polish languages augmented by polemic articles. When Jankus got acquainted with the members of the national movement in Great Lithuania, he became an editor and administrator of the Lithuanian periodical “Auszra” established by them. Other editors stayed on his farm in Bitėnai. As there was a lack of popular literature,Jankus and his companion published the Lithuanian “Auszra” calendar (“Lietuviškas “Auszros“ kalendorius”) in 1883 and 1884. The texts of educational and applied character were published in the calendar as well as literary texts, such as original and translated poetry and prose. They were written by Lithuanian authors Jonas Basanavičius, Andrius Jonas Vištelis, Petras Vileišis, and writers of other nations such as Sauerwein, Józef Ignac Kraszewski, Adam Mickiewicz, Ivan Krylov, Aleksandr Puškin, William Shakespeare and Guy de Maupasannt. For many Lithuanians these translations were the first acquaintance with the world literature.Martynas Jankus used to order printing of his books, calendars and “Auszra” in the printing houses of nearby towns, such as Ragnit (Lith.: Ragainė) and Tilsit (Lith.: Tilžė). Their production was disseminated in Lithuania Minor and smuggled to the Great Lithuania, which was under the strict ban on Latin printing introduced by the Russian tsarist regime. For this purpose, Jankus established a network of illegal disseminators of literature. It consisted of two sectors: secret book transporters over the border and disseminators in the Great Lithuania and legal storage owners near the border on the side of Prussia. This network was extended along the German-Russian border from Palanga till Dubeningken (Lith.: Dūbininkai; Dubeninki in present day Poland). The first stage of publishing activity was successful for Martynas Jankus. He acquired publishing expertise, knowledge of organizing illegal business, created long-term relations with the owners of printing houses, established the network for the dissemination of publications, developed skills to supply it with different printing materials and information. By March of 1889, the publisher from Bitėnai had established his own printing house in Ragnit and started printing business. This was the start of the second stage of Martynas Jankus’ activity. M. The article analyses a case study of artseria, a publisher of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, with the goal of analysing the situation of a small participant of the Lithuanian book publishing and bookselling in terms of financial sources and demand group of specialized literature. The problems encountered by artseria and other small publishers are approached from the historical and statistical aspects as well as commercial perspective. The article has used the data provided by the Lithuanian Statistics Department, the bulletin Lietuvos spaudos statistika 2012 [Statistics of Lithuanian Press 2012], reports by UAB Creditreform Lietuva and other documents. The Lithuanian publishers, especially small ones, have to cope with two major challenges, those of securing resources for book publishing and selling of their production. Creative problems related to book content, book production and printing quality are no longer an issue, though there have been different times during the 23 years of independence. In contrast to Western countries, Lithuanian publishers do not specialize in the strict sense, most of them produce books across a range of themes. This situation is caused by the type of the local market and strong competition for broadened readership. The artseria stands out among other Lithuanian publishers by its ambitious goal to keep to the established repertoire, with the focus on the aesthetics and the art of the book. The collection by the publisher is composed of publications dedicated to professional art of the 20th–21st century Lithuanian art, Dailė [Art] magazine published semi-annually, art folio publications, monographs dedicated to Lithuanian artists and exhibition catalogues. With over 15 years of work under its belt, artseria has developed a strategy for securing financial resources. It explores all the avenues of support through a range of programmes run by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Science and the Press, Radio and Television Support Fund (SRTRF), applying for grants under the Culture and Publications Programme by the Fund. Though artseria is not among the leaders enjoying the biggest financing under the programme, Dailė ranks, in the reports developed by the Fund, among the most valuable Lithuanian cultural periodicals, such as Kultūros barai, Šiaurės Atėnai, Krantai, Lietuvos fotografija, Archiforma and Teatro scena.Lithuanian book market is desperate for changes: it is waiting for a stronger legislative foundation and taxing policy, for revisiting of criteria applied to state financing of publishing and grant allocation, for closer cooperation between publishers and bookselling, for legal regulation of the monopoly policy in bookselling – and above all, for harnessing of unemployment and emigration, so that books may have their readership. Leidyklos repertuarą sudaro leidiniai, skirti XX–XXI a. profesionaliajai Lietuvos dailei: du kartus per metus leidžiamas žurnalas „Dailė“, meno albumai, dailininkų monografijos, katalogai. Įvairių monografijų, meno albumų leidybos idėja kilo pradėjus leisti žurnalą „Dailė“. Taigi artseria istorija – tai istorija, kaip žurnalas pagimdė leidyklą.REIKŠMINIAI ŽODŽIAI: leidykla, mažoji leidykla, artseria, finansavimo šaltiniai, repertuaras, knygos menas, rinka, platinimas
