In this brief essay I would like to pursue the notion that in the world of books we may be able to observe the clash between publishers catering to conventional reading and buying habits, and the expectations of readers who don’t consider themselves bound by the traditions and customs of the field. If asked, these readers might confess to regarding the traditions and customs of the book trade as antiquated, and no longer relevant in today’s world of instant and constant access to information, and certainly not applicable to them. Publishers have had to adjust their practices to the unfamiliar expectations of a new reading public many times in the history of the book. These changing expectations have concerned both the content (the ‘what’) and the form (the ‘how’) of reading. The mentality in the publishing industry is obviously going to have to reflect all the various mentalities that consumers display, including this pervasive but elusive online mentality. If the analysis I presented in this essay is in any way correct, it follows that there is a need for the book industry, and especially trade publishing to do market research. We clearly cannot speak of a reading crisis, with probably more written information being produced and consumed than ever before in history. But it does appear that a buying crisis is looming in the book industry. The sort of market research that is called for is not the sort that individual publishers should or can perform; it is the sort that policy makers, educationalists, and the book industry need to engage in collectively. For surely it makes sense to find out what various identifiable segments of the market would like to read, and how they would like to access their reading, and how much and how they would be prepared to pay for it.Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society Witte Singel-complex, P.N. van Eyckhof 4, 2311 BV Leiden E-mail: [email protected]Šiame esė apmąstomas šiandienos knygų pasaulyje pastebimas konfliktas tarp leidėjų, tenkinančių įprastinio skaitymo ir knygų pirkimo įpročius, ir skaitytojų, kurie nemano, kad juos turėtų varžyti knygininkystės tradicijos ir papročiai.

The object of this article is Lithuanian Jews\u27 religious books, printed in Hebrew or Yiddish in the Lithuanian territory in 1928-1940 and included in issues of the magazine “Bibliografijos žinios”, published by the Lithuanian Bibliographical Institute. The article analyzes the polygraphic base, repertoire and features of Jewish religious books through their reflection in “Bibliografijos žinios”. In addition, the article also aims at evaluating "Bibliografijos žinios" as a source of bibliographical information and its possible usage in future research.“Bibliografijos žinios” was the only interwar publication that aimed to systematically record Lithuania\u27s multilingual printing productions. 136 Jewish religious books were reflected in the interwar period in “Bibliografijos žinios”. Analysis of their bibliographical information revealed that Movšovičiaus and Kagano printing house in Kėdainiai had produced most of the Jewish religious books, while the temporary capital Kaunas with Joselevičiaus and other printing houses remained in second place. On average, 10–11 religious books were published yearly. Most religious books were printed in Hebrew, and several in Yiddish. Lithuanian language was occasionally used to present minimal information about the book in its title or cover pages. Explanations and comments of Talmud amounted to almost half of all publications. Another rich group of interwar Jewish religious books was lessons and preaching of rabbis. Many of these books were original works, written by local religious authorities.Several disadvantages, related to Jewish books\u27 reflection in “Bibliografijos žinios”, including, but not limited to inaccurate transcription and incomplete data, were found during the analysis. Consequently, further research of the Jewish books in Lithuania is advised to use additional information sources along “Bibliografijos žinios”[email protected] žydų religinė knyga – reikšminga, tačiau iki šiol menkai tyrinėta Lietuvos knygos paveldo dalis. Digital book publishing is developed in accordance with proven methodologies, the quality of digital books keeps getting better and is aligned to the needs of digital generation readers. All kinds of libraries are gradually getting involved in digital book publishing, but this kind of activity is still new and posing a variety of challenges. The aim of this article is to establish the activity of National libraries in EU member states in creating digital fiction and leisure books on the basis of their cultural heritage collections, and to evaluate the quality of these books from the user‘s perspective. The objectives are to investigate how many National libraries of EU member states are creating digital fiction books on the basis of their cultural heritage collections; to evaluate the quality of these digital books according to A. Gudinavičius (2012) quality criteria for digital books (navigation, technical aspects, information organization, privacy and security settings, etc.); to compare the quality of the books from different EU member states‘ National libraries and to measure the quality in 3 different devices: digital book reader, touchpad and personal computer. All 28 National libraries were questioned if they are creating digital books on the basis of their cultural heritage collections. Only Lithuanian, Hungarian and French National libraries create and provide free access to digital books in EPUB format. Six digital books (2 from each National library) were chosen for investigation. It was found that all 6 books meet the minimum quality requirements. Some sets of criteria, such as the pleasure to read, visual appearance, are rated not as good as navigation, privacy and security settings. Given the fact that these books are published for leisure reading, developers of digital books should pay more attention to visual solutions, so the book quality could be higher.Among the 3 EU member states (Lithuania, Hungary and France) French digital books have the highest quality. The visual appearance of these books almost equal commercial publishers‘ digital books. Meanwhile Lithuanian and Hungarian digital books lack the visual perfection, attention to details, which have a major impact on satisfaction and willingness to continue reading the book.It was found that the most proper device for reading digital books is Apple iPad, because it provides maximum functionality and aesthetics. Less functional is Nook digital book reader, although it also renders the book well enough. Reading books using personal computer is least comfortable, because Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 software provides the user with extremely limited functionality options. In summary it can be stated that the first steps taken by libraries in creating digital books in EPUB format are successful. If the weaknesses emphasized in this study were removed, the users could get a high-quality final product which would be attractive for members of digital generation.Vilniaus universiteto Bibliotekininkystės ir informacijos mokslų institutas, Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekaUniversiteto g. 3, LT-01513 Vilnius, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected]@mb.vu.lt Vilniaus universiteto Knygotyros ir dokumentotyros institutas, Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekaUniversiteto g. 3, LT-01513 Vilnius, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected] Skaitmeninės knygos leidžiamos jau ne pirmą dešimtį metų, jų kokybė nuolat tobulinama atsižvelgiant į skaitytojų poreikius. This paper analyzes the Polish market of textbooks in the last four decades with reference to the political, social, and technological changes of that period. The whole span of forty years can be divided into two stages – before and after 1989. The analysis concerns the three key actors involved in communication through books: the author, publisher, and the recipient. It was investigated how the social status and independence of these actors have changed over time. The description is not of a quantitative character and it only allows to identify the tendencies in the analyzed field. After the period of the publisher’s monopoly, when any publishing house was an emanation of the power of political authorities, there came the time of the recipient’s (teacher’s) importance. With the introduction of free market principles the teacher became the actor who selects textbooks out of many and thus influences not only the profit but also the future of the publisher. Free electronic resources, announced in the program „Cyfrowa Szkola” (2012), lead to an increasing independence of the teacher. A part of his new tasks used to belong to the publisher. Institute of Library and Information Science University of Wrocław pl.

Advertising in press is one of the oldest, most popular and least expensive forms of advertising, and its effectiveness, compared with other forms of advertising, is rather high. In the most general sense, advertising is a profit gained by mass media from advertisements about goods and services. Meanwhile, perception of a book in people’s minds has always been ambivalent: for some people it was and still is associated with exclusively pragmatic goals, in other words, it is a source of business and income. For the other part of society a book is an exceptionally educational part of culture. At any rate, book publishing is a multiple phenomenon, and for everyone involved in this process it gains a different shade of meaning.A more active tradition of advertising in Lithuania has formed since 1992, when an increasing number of various foreign companies started penetrating into the country. This had a direct impact on the increase of advertising in media as well. Since the end of 2008, advertising volume has dropped by about a third, but advertising of books in popular media in principle has not been affected by this.Popular magazines perform an entertaining function and are intended for leisure, thus advertising of books in magazines coincides with their function. Book advertising in magazines has been noticed by 89 percent of potential readers of the popular periodicals. Judging by this, clients of advertising, i.e. publishing companies reach their initial goal: the advertising is seen and analyzed. On the other hand, only 2 percent of respondents have used advertising in press for their own purposes and decided to purchase the book because of advertising.Book advertising in popular periodicals may be perceived in two ways: as an advertising announcement or as a part of editorial article. Most editors seek for the latter comprehension. With regard to a structural plane, book advertising in popular magazines is usually delivered through a short informative message. Instead of illustrations typical to magazines, a photo of the book cover is published. Another expression of advertising is a short interview with a famous person who has read the book. In more rare cases this could be an interview with an author of the book. In this case one can speak about a relation between a book and advertising and discuss whether this case is advertising or just information provision. In very rare cases book extracts are published. With regard to an advertising place of books in the popular magazines, the least attractive space is dedicated to this purpose. Advertising is usually placed at the end of the magazine, at the bottom of the page, on the left page. In other words, exactly in those places where advertising is least effective according to marketing specialists. For most potential readers, book advertising is not the main, but advisory factor while choosing books. Such readers’ conception is rather natural, since book advertising in the popular magazines occupies a relatively peripheral location. Those who wish to receive more information about books should concentrate on literary publications, where more detailed information is provided. The publishing value chain has remained relatively consistent since the invention of the printing press. Robert Darnton’s influential model of the communications circuit of the book, which tracks how intellectual property circulated in 18th century France, has been a largely accurate representation of the publishing industry until the late 20th century. This article examines changes to the publishing industry, particularly as a result of the disruptions and disintermediations of the digital age, and proposes a re-drawing of the communications circuit for the 21st century. The research in this article was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council grant number AH/J01317X/1 The Book Unbound: Disruption and Disintermediation in the Digital Age.Stirling Centre for International Publishingand Communication Division of Literatureand [email protected] University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 [email protected] Leidybos vertės grandinė išliko santykinai pastovi nuo spausdinimo staklių išradimo laikų. Svarbus Roberto Darntono sukurtas knygos komunikacijos grandinės modelis, aprašantis intelektinės nuosavybės judrumą aštuonioliktojo amžiaus Prancūzijoje, gana tiksliai atspindėjo leidybos sektoriaus raidą iki vėlyvo dvidešimtojo amžiaus. Šiame straipsnyje visų pirma nagrinėjami tokie pokyčiai kaip skaitmeninio amžiaus sukelti dramatiški trūkiai (angl. disruptions) ir be tarpininkų vykstantys procesai (angl. disintermediation). When conducting research, it is important for a historian to examine not only the event or object of interest, but all of the decisive circumstances, chronology, places and persons involved as well. It is in order to attain this goal, that sources of information are collected, analysed and interpreted. Humanitarian disciplines tend to research manuscripts as material artefacts, literary texts or means of cultural transactions. However, it is not common in Lithuania for manuscripts to be used as a source of research. A manuscript, copied in the 15th century GDL, was chosen to illustrate this statement. The book was sometime later divided into two parts that are now stored separately in the National Library of Russia and the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. This article was written in order to determine the history of manuscript book Collection of Sermons by Isaac of Nineveh, while at the same time presenting ways to use manuscripts as a legitimate source in cultural and historical research. The study was carried out by using codicological and comparative methods as well as analysis of literature and archival sources. Detailed codicological descriptions of both books were written. The hypothesis, that the two codices, which were copied by hand at the start of 15th century, are two parts of one exemplar, was proven true on the basis of the results that were obtained. The article contains information about the historical and cultural contexts surrounding the birth of this book. The history of how the codex was copied and stored is reconstructed and the persons involved in the process are discussed in the article as well. The complex research of the dated exemplar reveals that the manuscript book as well as its separate structural elements and the materials it was made of can be used as a source of information for research in at least several scientific disciplines such as history, literature and bibliography. The codex itself could be considered as an interdisciplinary source of research. The postscript, which remained in the codex, contains two colophons and the Praise for Witold. This text is published at the end of the article in its original orthography.Vilniaus universiteto Knygotyros ir dokumentotyros institutasUniversiteto g. 3, LT-01513, Vilnius, Lietuva El. paštas: [email protected]Šiuo straipsniu siekiama atskleisti XV a. pradžios kodekso Izaoko Siro pamokslai Gavėniai istoriją, tuo pat metu parodant rankraštinės knygos kaip šaltinio kultūros ir istorijos tyrimams galimybes.
