RADVILŲ KORESPONDENTAI XVIII AMŽIAUS PIRMOjo JE PUSĖJE
The purpose of this research is to identify and present the correspondents of one influential Lithuanian family of high nobles Radvilas: O. Radvilienė (1676–1746), the widow of a vice-chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and two of her sons, grand hetman of Lithuania, Vilnius voivode, Vilnius and Trakai castellan M. K. Radvila “Žuvelė” [“Little Fish”] (1702–1762) and royal deputy cupbearer, grand standard bearer J. F. Radvila (1715–1760). It is a presentation of the origin, education, family, financial position, relations with nobles and among the correspondents. According to the letters stored in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw and historiography, sixteen persons who had sent news of public character and newspapers (manuscript and printed) in the first half of the 18th century to the Radvilas family are identified. We began to create a collective biography of this group, but we don’t discount the possibility of expanding it in the future. These people came from undistinguished and unknown families, but were well-educated persons of citified origin and through personal faculty, head, artfulness, luck, profitable and gainful contacts reached quite high positions. Some of them originated from small Lithuanian nobility which were career-interrelated with the Radvilas estate. They all new foreign languages, geography, were well oriented in the political situation, understood the demands of the high nobles. The majority of the correspondents worked simultaneously for several high nobles, bishops, leaders of the biggest cities, so it is possible to talk about the formation of a new occupational group in the 3rd–4th decades of the 18th century in the Polish–Lithuanian commonwealth. Members of this unofficial group were engaged in collecting and redacting news, subscribing and sending newspapers from country and abroad for remuneration, communicated, rivaled, kept in touch with each other or at least knew about one another. The main places of the concentration of correspondents were the best points of communication and spread of news – post offices and chancellery of the state. Expanding the post network required more and more service personnel in the first half of the 18th century. For the chiefs and secretaries of the Warsaw post office, work in the field of information transfer (collecting news, redacting the manuscript newspapers and newssheets, taking care of regular communication) became the main trade, so these people can be called real correspondents. These who not only sent news, but also pursued different prescriptions of the Radvilas and dealt with business, balanced between client and correspondent functions. It was impossible to survive only on the correspondent work, so even the post office personnel had extra sources of income, especially in province. For the latter and for the personnel of the state chancellery (registry and royal secretary), long-lasting contacts with the high nobles such as the Radvilas was a testimony of trust in them. This could (but also could not) provide both financial and immaterial profit.Lietuvos žemės ūkio universiteto Kultūrologijos ir filosofijos katedraStudentų g. 11–250, LT-53361 Akademija, Kauno r.El. paštas: [email protected] Radvilų archyve Varšuvoje saugomais laiškais ir negausia istoriografija straipsnyje identifikuojami naujienas ir spausdintinius bei rankraštinius laikraščius į Radvilų dvarus XVIII amžiaus pirmojoje pusėje nuolat siuntę asmenys ir pradedama kurti jų kolektyvinė biografija

LIETUVIŲ KALBOS DRAUDIMO INTERPRETACIJA 1889 m. „VARPO“ PUSLAPIUOSE
In all times, the status of the Lithuanian language has been associated with the development of Lithuanian state and its people as well as with the changing historical factors. At the end of the 19th century, the intellectuals enshrined the ideas of statehood and freedom. The first Lithuanian newspapers “Aušra” (1883–1886) and “Varpas” (1889–1905) are symbols of the national revival. The aim of this research is to reveal the essence of interpretations published in the newspaper “Varpas” (1889) concerning the language prohibition policy in Lithuania. The “Varpas” trends met the natural expectations of the Lithuanian nation in the end of the 19th century, especially to preserve the native language, while newspaper publishers’ arguments revealed the weakness of the czar’s government strategy regarding the Lithuanian language: Latin letters are connected with the Lithuanian language from the beginning of Christianity in the Lithuania (1387) and the institutional education; the most important criterion for renouncing the Russian alphabet is the nation’s decision. The Latin alphabet is a truly national thing; the prohibition to use the Lithuanian language in public life can be considered as a manipulation of the nation from the religious point of view, as part of the assimilation policy which forces Lithuanians to abandon not only their native language, but also their faith; participation of the church in politics shows its great moral decline. The low national self-awareness of Lithuanian families, scarce examples of a positive relation between the Lithuanian language and Lithuanian intellectuals (medics, priests), students’ receptivity to foreign language elements tattered confidence among Lithuanians. Therefore “Varpas” publishers decided to perform a mission – to explain the ways how to unite, to protect the nation’s foundation – its language, and to strengthen national self-awareness.Klaipėdos universiteto Edukologijos katedraS. Nėries g. 5, LT-92227 Klaipėda, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected] - aptariamos ir interpretuojamos 1889 m. „Varpo“ numeriuose išspausdintos publikacijos, kuriose įvertinama lietuvių kalbos būklė carinės Rusijos okupuotoje Lietuvoje, išryškinami kalbos praktinio naudojimo sunkumai Lietuvoje. Parodoma, kad gimtosios kalbos vartojimo problema „Varpe“ aktualinama įvairiais atžvilgiais: lotyniškos abėcėlės tinkamumo lietuvių kalbai, mokymo priemonių lietuvių kalba švietimo institucijose trūkumo, lietuvių kalbos vartojimo reikmės tikėjimo dalykuose ir kitais. Daug dėmesio skiriama toms „Varpo“ publikacijoms, kuriose nuosekliai įrodinėjamas lotyniškos abėcėlės vartojimo lietuviškuose raštuose loginis ir teisinis pamatas ir šis reiškinys interpretuojamas kaip prigimtinis dalykas, kurio prievarta niekas neturi teisės atimti

LENKŲ KNYGA NEPRIKLAUSOMYBĖS ATKŪRIMO IŠVAKARĖSE 1918 METAIS: POLITINĖS, KULTŪRINĖS IR TEISINĖS APLINKYBĖS
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, in the territories of Poland annexed by three partitioners, books and periodicals printed in Polish played an important role in shaping and maintaining national ties among Poles living under Russian, Prussian and Austrian rules. In the period of the Partitions of Poland, all processes involving the book – printing, collecting and reading – as well as such institutions as publishing houses, bookshops and libraries were closely connected with different spheres of social life, especially politics, law and economics. That is why the situation of the Polish book on the eve of the restoration of national independence can be best captured by analysing those external, yet very important, factors. The interrelations of politics and law with the book are best reflected in publishing policies which developed under the influence of censorship, being a form of official examination of materials going to press. After the uprisings in 1830, 1863 and 1905, the partitioners tightened the legislation setting limits on Polish cultural and academic texts. As a result, on the one hand, the number of books officially published in Polish decreased and, on the other hand, the number of those published illegally increased. The most important publishing centres in the 19th century were Warsaw and Vilnius in the territory annexed by Russia, Cracow and Lviv in Austria, and Poznańin Prussia. In the Polish territories annexed by three partitioners, the control over publications varied (being strictest under Russian rule) and hence the authorities hindered the circulation of printed materials across the borders. In the 19th century, collecting Polish books and other national mementoes became very popular, which resulted in establishing private libraries rich in valuable manuscripts, incunabula, old and new prints, cartography and other special collections. The biggest of those libraries joined together and were put to public use by establishing new ones whose functioning was legally guaranteed by the foundation act. Such libraries were the Ossolińscy Library and the Bawarowscy Library in Lviv, the Ordynacja Krasińskich Library and the Ordynacja Zamojskiej Library in Warsaw, the Działyńscy Library in Kórnik, the Raczyńscy Library in Poznań, and the Ordynacja Przeździeckich Library in Czarny Ostrów in Podolia. Those institutions helped not only to preserve Polish written works, but also to compile Polish bibliography. The most important work compiled at the end of the 19th century was Bibliografia polska by Karol Estreicher (22 volumes released between 1872–1908). When Poland regained its independence in 1918, a lot of enterprises involving the book, which had been started during the period of the Partitions, were continued.Uniwersytet Wrocławski, Instytut Informacji Naukowej i BibliotekoznawstwaPl.
