KŪRYBINĖ BIBLIOFILIJOS ERDVĖ LIETUVOS RESPUBLIKOJE (1930–1940)
The article deals with the bibliophilism in Lithuania in 1930–1940. On the basis of publications, archyve material and oral history sources some aspects of the creative self-expression of bibliophiles are analysed (bibliophiles sensu stricto and book lovers). The analysis of private libraries of the most prominent bibliophiles and book lovers of that period (V. Biržiška’, A. Janulaitis’, K. Jablonskis’, V. Steponaitis’, P. Jakštas’, Vaižgantas’, P. Galaunė’, V. Burkevičius’, V. Daumantas’, A. Mošinskis’, J. Šaulys’ and others) leads to a conlusion that some favourable conditions for the spread of bibliophilism appeared in Lithuania before the II World War. The attention of the cultural politic of Lithuania of that time was focused away from the elite culture and was concentrated to the folk culture, but an elite stile of bibliophilism and the lifestyle of bibliophiles themselves was actualy cultivated too. The members of the Society of 27 Book Lovers, which functioned in Kaunas in 1930–1940, had started bibliophilic activities in line with Western bibliophilic images. The historical distance between actual folk culture and aristocratic culture caused that Lithuanian bibliophilic life of that time and activity of the Society of 27 Book Lovers were very secluded.Vilniaus universiteto Knygotyros ir dokumentotyros institutasUniversiteto g. 3, 01513 Vilnius, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected], remiantis publikuotais šaltiniais ir literatūra bei kai kuriais naujais autorės turimais sakytinės istorijos liudijimais, nagrinėjami prieškario Lietuvos bibliofilinio gyvenimo vertybiniai aspektai (bibliofilo savivoka ir saviraiška), to meto organizuoto bibliofilijos sąjūdžio narių bibliofilinės nuostatos. Svarstoma, kiek jie laikytini bibliofilais ir kiek – knygų mėgėjais plačiąja prasme. Išanalizavus turimą medžiagą apie vertingiausias to meto bibliofilų asmenines bibliotekas (V. Biržiškos, A. Janulaičio, K. Jablonskio, V. Steponaičio, P. Jakšto, Vaižganto, P. Galaunės, V. Burkevičiaus, V. Daumanto, A. Mošinskio, J. Šaulio ir kt.) bei pačių bibliotekų savininkų bibliofilinio angažavimosi liudijimus, daroma išvada, jog Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje buvo susiformavusi bibliofilinei veiklai palanki kūrybinė erdvė.
KRISTIJONO DONELAIČIO „METŲ“ VERTIMAI Į LATVIŲ KALBĄ XIX A. ANTROJE PUSĖJE–XX AMŽIUJE
It took quite a long time for the poem `The Seasons” by Kristijonas Donelaitis to have a full translation in Latvian – up to the second half of the 20th century. The first translation – some fragments of the poem – were made by a pastor in Kurzeme, Carl Friedrich Watson, and published in the twenties of the 19th century. The first thorough publication about K. Donelaitis himself was written by Andrejs Dīriķis (in 1874) who regularly covered Lithuanian culture in Latvian press in the seventies and eighties of the 19th century. The translation of “The Seasons” made by the Latvian poet Rainis in the eighties of the 19th century unfortunately has not survived. In the thirties and forties of the 20th century the translation of the poem was initiated by the writer and promoter of Latvian – Lithuanian cultural ties Emīls Skujenieks. In 1963 and 2006 two different versions of translation made by the poet Paulis Kalva were published. The recent publications of comparative literary studines give us evidence, that further research of the translations in Latvian of the Donelaitis poem, especially using new sources, is rather promising.Latvijas Universitate Lomonosova iela 1A, Rīga, LV1019, Latvija El. paštas: [email protected] pateikiama retrospektyvi Kristijono Donelaičio poemos „Metai“ vertimų publikacijų latvių kalba analizė ir atskleidžiama, kaip latvių skaitytojas palaipsniui susipažino su K. Donelaičio „Metų“ poemos vertėjus latvių ir lietuvių kultūrinių ryšių kontekste. Ypač išsiskiria Andrejo Dyrikio, Janio Rainio ir Paulo Kalvos atlikti darbai, populiarinę K. Donelaičio kūrybą

SKAITYMO KULTŪROS UGDYMO KLAUSIMAI LIETUVOS BIBLIOTEKININKYSTĖJE 1918–1940 METAIS
The article the discusses theoretical and methodical premises of the culture of reading in 1918–1940 in Lithuania. The culture of reading is interpreted as a dual system of practical and intelectual abilities, required in the reading process. The subject is analysed with distinguishing between direct (propaganda of reading, books and library services, also informational, cultural and educational library services that intesify readership) and indirect methods (organisation of the system of libraries, gathering of reading materials, bibliographical work), elaborated in theoretical and methodical library science publications of Lithuanian and translated foreign authors. In Lithuanian publications, access to books and periodicals stand as the priority task of librarianship (V. Biržiška, J. Slapšinskas (Rimantas), V. Ruzgas). Authors described methods of working with readers, unfolding the content of direct and indirect education of readers. Propaganda of library services, books and reading, psychological judgement of the readership in the library, bibliographical work (V. Biržiška, V. Ruzgas, J. Slapšinskas (Rimantas), V. Ruzgas), appliation of sociological statistical research methods (V. Ruzgas, R. Burokas), policy of library collection supplement that matched the needs of the educational process and readers’ interests (V. Biržiška, R. Burokas, J. Slapšinskas (Rimantas) would make the core of Lithuanian culture of reading theory. Lithuanian authors mostly cited Russian pedagogues, psychologists (N. Rubakin, V. Vachterov, V. Vladislavlev (I. Gulbinski), V. Nevski and others). Methods of discretional (conscious, critical) reading were built according to the Western scientists (E. Faguet). There was also a special interest in the theory of self-education by Russian bibliopsychologist N. Rubakin. During the period under analysis, translations of the following authors were published: P. Ladewig’s textbook of librarianship, which included the basic knowledge of the culture of reading formation in libraries, N. Rubakin’s studies of science popularization and self-sustaining reading techniques, and articles by Western pedagogues, literary critics (G. Brandes, E. Dévaud and others) on the topical matters concerning reading. UNIVERSITETINĖS LEIDYBOS SAMPRATA: TERMINIJOS PROBLEMATIKA
By analyzing scientific literature on the subject of university publishing the following problems were discovered: first, the concept of university publishing is not used in Lithuanian book science in general, on the other hand, this term is not present in the Lithuanian language dictionaries or glossaries; third, a more general concept of academic publishing is often in use. Thus, the concept of university publishing is undefined. One can notice that the term of academic publishing is often used instead of the university publishing. By analyzing specific activity of university publishers it was discovered that essential meaning aspects of the terms are lost when using the generalized term of academic publishing. These aspects are very important for understanding and identification of essential features of the university publishing. The legitimizing of the concept of the university publishing will help to discuss and research the phenomena of the university publishing. The analysis of the definition of the term academic publishing has shown that this concept is wider and includes university publishing as a narrower concept. Therefore, it is possible to identify the types of academic publishing by subordination to a certain educational or research institutions. It would be important to emphasize the broadness and narrowness of the concepts academic and university publishing. The investigation of the usage of both terms in Lithuanian and foreign literature shows that the use of them depends on the traditions of understanding academic and university publishing in a particular country.

The subject of the research depending to the history of the librarianship of Lithuania is directly connected to the political and social situation in the state in the beginning of the 19th century and the dispersion of the ideas of the Enlightenment all over Europe. The article explores various historical sources (library manuscript catalogues, book proveniences, orders of tsar, correspondence of Vilnius University with the imperial administration) to investigate the period from the time Lithuania was annexed by Russia and Vilnius Jesuit Academy was reorganised to the imperial university in 1803 by tsar Alexander I up to the date Vilnius University activity was interrupted by the orders of tsar Nicholas I in 1832, which coincided with the noticeable alteration in the educational system, new subordination and points of the academical community, changed structure, financing, replenishment methods and finally the partition of Vilnius University library. The main notice of the article is to refer to a description of influence of the imperial government to the library and Vilnius University community as the most educated part of Lithuanian society of this epoch for compare appropriate characteristics with and the substantiality at the end of the 18th century when the local community and its library was under leadership of the order of Jesuits (dissolved in Europe in 1773) to examine existing positive estimations of the traditional historiography on the issue. The research covers some directions of Vilnius academical community activity under changing conditions related to the replenishing of the library (using traditional and the new forms), management, catalogues rewriting, imperial censorship, propaganda and the painful partition of book collection confiscated from the closed Vilnius University and lifted to Kiev and Charkov universities, the gymnasium of Orsha (now – Mogilev district, Belarus) and to other libraries of the empire of Russia. After the detailed analysis of significant historical documents kept in Lithuanian State Historical Archive and Vilnius University Library it is recovered the negative impact of the Russian imperial Government authority both for the local community and its library as well. It is disclosed that next to particular progressive changes in the field of the library financing and replenishing of the book collection by European science papers and popular periodicals, such as “Journal des sçavans” by D. De Sallo (Paris, 1665–1797), “Allgemaine Literatur Zeitung” by F. J. J. Bertuch (Halle, 1804–1849), “Bibliotheca italiana, o sia Giornale di letteratura scienze ed arti compilato da vari letterati” (Milano, 1816–1840), “The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufacturers, Fashions and Politics” by R. Ackermann (London, 1809–1829), “The Repertory of patent inventions, and other discoveries and improvements in arts, manufactures, and agriculture” (London, 1825–1862), “The Annals, Edinbourgh Medical und Surgical Journal” (Edinbourgh, 1805–1855, etc.). The Russian imperial authorities forwarded significant loses of values, changed essential points of members of the local academical community, limitated the access of works of modern European authors (Voltaire, C. F. de Volney, P. H. Holbach, D. Diderot, etc.) and influenced the straitening of dispersion of ideas of the Enlightenment, influenced the obsolescence of Vilnius University library and the noticeable interruption of development of the traditional European librarianship in Vil-nius social environment.
The dean of Plungė V. Jarulaitis and his entourage started actively organising Catholic Lithuanian book publishing after the Lithuanian press ban. A project of a Lithuanian Catholic publishing organization establishment was originated with the lower clergy reaches. That project was implemented on July 17, 1905. The publishing association “Šaltinis” was established in Plungė. The structure of the association was created, publishing plans and financial reserve were also anticipated. The association was stock and it was run by a chairman and priest V. Jarulaitis and his assistant J. Bikinas, who was also a priest. The association was specialized in publishing popular religious literature. The association “Šaltinis” functioned surreptitiously. Only its members, associates and the hierarchs of the Samogitian see knew about that association. The publishing centre actively massed the intellectual power. The vast majority of nationally conscious priests from the Samogitain region belonged to the association. In those days the eminent participants of Lithuanian National Revival such as J. Tumas-Vaižgantas, a poet J. Šnapštys, a writer Šatrijos Ragana and others belonged to the association “Šaltinis”. The association showed accomplished work, P. Turauskas’ and Šnapštys’ translations were made ready and they continued the other editions though a Samogitian bishop M. Paliulionis for his personal reasons moved the association “Šaltinis” to Kaunas. On October 12, 1905 the organization was reorganized and initiated Saint Kazimieras association creation. Plungė lost a part of Catholic book publishing centre and the association had problems in Kaunas. The shown example of the association “Šaltinis” inspired the further organizational Catholic publishing tone, which was continued by Saint Kazimieras association.Vilniaus universitetoKnygotyros ir dokumentotyros institutasUniversiteto g. 3, LT-01513 Vilnius, LietuvaEl. paštas: [email protected]ėje 1905 m. liepos 17 d. buvo įsteigta akcinė leidybinė „Šaltinio“ draugija. Jai vadovavo kun. Vincentas Jarulaitis ir jo padėjėjas kun. Juozas Bikinas. Draugija ketino specializuotis leisti populiariąją religinę literatūrą ir veikė slapta. Jai priklausė didžioji dalis Žemaitijos regiono tautiškai susipratusių kunigų (Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas), rašytojų (Juozas Šnapštys, Šatrijos Ragana) ir kitų žymių to meto lietuvių tautinio atgimimo veikėjų.
The article investigates the conception of biographistics on the basis of works of Eastern and other countries researchers of biographistics. The greatest attention was paid to the explanation of the concept, object and functions of biographistics. Therefore, these conclusions were made by generalizing the considerations provided therein. Biographistics occupies a significant place in the communication and information field in Lithuania. Only after 1990 it was perceived that the place of the science of bibliological biographistics is one of the constituent parts of biographistics with its own object of investigation, range of problems, methods and sources. The development of the bibliological Lithuanian biographistics covers four periods. These are: bibliological biographistics until the 1918 Lithuanian independence period, period of Lithuanian independence in 1918–1940, Soviet period and investigations of contemporary bibliological biographistics after 1990. During the period of independent Lithuania, the preparation of comprehensive basis of the sources of biographistics was commenced, and further scientific investigations were possible due to information that has been publicized or preserved in the manuscripts. During the first years of independence, owing to efforts of prof. V. Biržiška, J. Tumas-Vaižgantas and other researchers, the creation of a methodology for preparing biographic publications was commenced, yet the scientists did not succeed in the accomplishment thereof. During the Soviet times, scientific investigations that had been started during the first Lithuanian independence period were continued in the bibliological biographistics. Discussions were held on issues associated with the theory and methodology of biographistics. The stage of contemporary bibliological deve-lopment of biographistics is associated with the second period of the Lithuanian independence during which the science reached maturity. During this period, theory and methodology of the science was formed, different biographic publications were prepared, as well as long-term projects were implemented. The investigations of bibliological biographistics were carried out by a plentiful number of scientists theoreticians and practicians who worked in the field of bibliography, bibliology, literature studies or history. The most prominent of them are V. Biržiška, J. Tumas-Vaižgantas, A. Bruožis, P. Ruseckas, D. Kaunas, J. Lebedys, V. Merkys, G. Raguotienė, V. Stonienė, V. Žukas, etc.It should be noted that the biography method is a method of both, general scientific and special method of bibliological biographistics. This is an investigation into the world of the book character as a personality, and its activities associated with the world of books, into the composition whereof not only the studies of the manuscript and printed heritage should be integrated, but also conversations of both, with the person himself, and with the persons who knew him should be included. Using the biographic method, a life history of the book character is sought to be comprehensively understood and disclosed, as well as the conditions of his formation to be analyzed. The organization of biographistics studies has been formed both, in Lithuania and in other foreign countries. The Institute of Documentation and Book Science of Vilnius University and the Centre of the Bibliography and Book Science of Martynas Mazvydas National Library of Lithuania have become the main research centres of the bibliogy based science of biographistics in the country. A positive impact is made by the international Auto/Biography Association which forms not only the theory and methodology of this field, arranges symposiums, international conferences or seminars by bringing together scientists from all over the world, but also fosters the sharing of experience in the investigations into the field of biographistics.
