MASONŲ KNYGOS KULTŪROS RAIŠKA XIX AMŽIAUS LIETUVOJE

The article investigates the expression of Masonic book culture in Lithuania, viewed as the lands of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, in the 19th century. This culture is recognizable from the special symbols and bibliographic design. The article also researches such activities of Freemasons, active in Lithuania since 1776, as storage and distribution of collections owned by them, book publishing, symbolism of illustrations and cover page structure. The very term Masonic book is used to describe the books compiled, stored and used by members of this Masonic Brotherhood as well as the books related to Freemasons. It has been established that at the beginning of the 19 century, side by side with the personal collections held by Michał Dłuski, Kazimierz Kontrym and Johann Friedrich Wolfgang, the Masons also collected the libraries of the Gorliwy Litwin, Reformed Gorliwy Litwin and other Lodges. Proof of that has been found in the surviving Vilnius University Gift Book, 1792–1832, a list of books acquired by the Vilnius Lodge Gorliwy Litwin, signed by Michał Dłuski on October 23, 1816 as well as archival sources. The main incentive to collect books was storage of the Brotherhood memory, self-education, moral development, training Brotherhood discipleship, and preparation of ritual statements. The illustrations of the Masons’ books, particularly their title pages and comments in their ritual works reflect the same instruments as the ones used in the portraits of Lithuanian Masons such as a hammer, a plumb, a level, a square, a compass, a trowel, etc. One can also find other generalized symbols of the Age of Enlightenment and Freemasonry in these books such as the eye of providence, a sword, an hourglass, a skull, a punch, etc. The books also stand out from the rest in their unusual structure of bibliographic design (Mason-specific marking of the year of publication and provenance, encryption of the lodge name, etc.) Even though Masons in Lithuania were not actively involved in publishing activities, they commissioned the publication of subject-specific brochures and various forms from the bookmen Jozef Zawadzki and Christian Weise. In the sphere of publishing and distribution, Freemasons collaborated with the Tilsit Masonic lodge ‘Louise under the Open Hearts’, functioning from 1799 to 1835. In this context, the donation of ‘Lithuanian Bible Histories’ by Ludwig Rhesa (1816) on August 27, 1817, could be regarded as a manifestation of not only ethnic but Masonic relationship as well. Ludwig Rhesa, professor of the Konigsberg university, was from 1806 member of the Konigsberg Masonic lodge ‘Three Crowns’; in the period 1816–1819, he served as orator. After the persecution instigated against Freemasons by Emperor Alexander’s administration started in 1812, they gave over to Vilnius university library the books of 26 titles – in total, 28 volumes (on February 20, 1824 and May 7, 1824, respectively). Three more Masonic books, used during the rituals conducted, have been identified on the basis of historiographic sources. The majority of books were aimed at Masonic lawmaking, rituals, history as well as philosophical issues of Freemasons. The books collected were in French, German, Polish, Latin and Russian languages. After the closure of Vilnius University in 1832, a major part of Masonic books were taken to Kiev. In the mid 20th century, however, thanks to prof. Levas Vladimirovas’ efforts, they were returned to the Vilnius University library storage. The surviving Masonic books reflect Freemasons’ symbolic thinking, their moral values as well as a transnational nature of the Brotherhood activities. On the other hand, the surviving books, their design and binding were related not only to the elite book and luxury but also to mid layer of town-dwellers‘and the intelligentsia, which was beginning to develop. The functioning of the Masonic book culture from a broader perspective of both space and time could be revealed by further studies.XIX a. pradžioje Lietuvoje, be asmeninių rinkinių (Mykolo Dluskio, Kazimiero Kontrimo, Johano Frydricho Volfgango), masonai kaupė ložių bibliotekas.

The article deals with the concept of a bibliophile edition, types and groups of these specific editions, their appearance and development in both foreign countries and Lithuania. Bibliophile publishing in Lithuania started in 1930, after the Society of 27 Book Lovers was established, with the aim of popularising book culture and disseminating the fine editions, among other aims. The ten years of the Society of 27 Book Lovers’ existence (1930–1940) saw 10 publications, which became a shining example of the European bibliophile publishing. During the International Exhibition of Modern Art and Technology, held in Paris in 1937, the book Gulbė – karaliaus pati by Viktoras Petravičius was awarded the Grand Prize, Mečislovas Bulaka’s illustrations of Liūdna pasaka by Jonas Biliūnas was awarded the Gold medal, whereas Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas received the Gold medal for wood carvings for books and posters. During the Soviet period, not a single bibliophile edition was published in Lithuania. The authorities looked upon bibliophilic activities as a kind of the game played by the bourgeois society, alien to the Soviet people and contrary to the official Communist ideology. The publication of the first numbered editions was started only during the period of Perestroika and National Revival Movement in 1987–1988. The article aims to analyse the numbered editions published by four bibliophile organizations, currently active in Lithuania, during the last two decades as well as the publications issued by other Lithuanian publishing houses which could be regarded as bibliophilic editions. On the basis of the research, the following conclusion could be drawn: the above mentioned numbered editions, with a few exceptions, do not meet the criteria of a bibliophile edition. Therefore, one can hardy talk about the tradition of publishing bibliophile editions in the present-day Lithuania, based on the bibliophile culture, even though certain individual successful examples do exist. Even though Lithuania today boasts a number of internationally renowned book artists, the publishing houses have neither theoretical nor practical readiness to publish bibliophile editions. The bibliophile clubs active in Lithuania largely unite book lovers as amateurs rather than bibliophiles as book collectors. As such, these clubs are passive ideological supporters of bibliophile movement, exerting little influence on the appearance of new bibliophile editions. Nevertheless, the publishing activities launched by certain Lithuanian bibliophiles – book collectors, aimed at making their collections public, is sufficient proof that the ambitions of making business, book collecting and disseminating art can be successfully combined. A certain number of books, published in Lithuania recently, meet the status of a bibliophilic edition. Claiming that bibliophile publishing today is in the margins of Lithuania’s publishing activities, we have to admit that certain hopeful signs do exist nevertheless.

This article presents the results of analysing the possibilities of disseminating the results of scientific activity and deals with building a digital researcher identity, enhancing it by Web 2.0 tools and using academic library services. This research concludes the following tools for building up a researcher’s digital identity: publishing personal Curriculum Vitae and a list of scientific papers supported by indicators of science-metrics and the use of social networks and other Web 2.0 related tools; results of web search on a researcher’s scientific activity. The analysis of previous research works and case study were applied to determine the scope of application and the key problems arising from these tools in both Lithuania and on the international level. Alternative aspects of research dissemination are considered together with the traditional methods of research evaluation to achieve a better valorisation of scientific results and gain better recognition both on researcher’s personal and institutional levels. These aspects include researcher’s personal involvement into social scientific networks, active dissemination of daily and scientific information in the Web, institutional and national interest to the development of researcher databases, international cooperation for building, transferring and publicising lists of scientific papers.Straipsnyje analizuojamos mokslinių rezultatų sklaidos galimybės kuriant antrosios kartos saityno priemonėmis ir akademinių bibliotekų paslaugomis papildytą mokslininko skaitmeninį identitetą. Atlikus tyrimą, nustatytos pagrindinės mokslininko skaitmeninio identiteto kūrimo priemonės: mokslininko gyvenimo aprašymo bei mokslinių publikacijų sąrašų viešinimas, mokslometrijos rodiklių pateikimas, socialinių tinklų ir kitų antrosios kartos saityno įrankių naudojimas; saityno naršymo apie mokslininką ir jo veiklą rezultatai. Siejant literatūros ir atvejo analizės metodus, ištirtos šių priemonių taikymo galimybės asmeniniu bei instituciniu lygmeniu ir problemos Lietuvoje bei tarptautiniu mastu. Siekiant populiarinti mokslinius pasiekimus, įgyti asmeninį ar institucinį žinomumą bei pripažinimą šiuolaikinėje mokslo komunikacijoje, itin svarbu atsižvelgti ne tik į tradicinius mokslo vertinimo, bet ir besiplėtojančius alternatyviuosiuos sklaidos aspektus: asmeninį dalyvavimą mokslininkų socialiniuose tinkluose, aktyvų dalykinės ir mokslinės informacijos skleidimą interneto erdvėje, institucinį ir nacionalinį suinteresuotumą kuriant mokslininkų duomenų bazes, tarptautinį bendradarbiavimą formuojant, perkeliant ir publikuojant mokslininkų publikacijų sąrašus

The article presents the results of two surveys carried out in Sweden and related to the electronic books. One of them was conducted in 2012 and directed towards public libraries. The other one, conducted in 2014, involved physical bookshops and the attitudes of their staff regarding e-books. The result has shown that physical bookshops are not dealing in electronic book sales, but the majority of public libraries are providing access to e-books. The bookshops do not feel any threats coming from this new technology and do not invest in expensive and uncertain technology needed for selling them. Public libraries are trying to overcome and increase the borrowing of e-books through libraries and succeed in that, though the loans of e-books account for a small fraction of all loans in public libraries. Libraries engaging in this new type of services encounter many problems with provision, limitations, budgeting and managing of electronic books, however, they are not going to drop this activity in the nearest future and look for the solutions to all existing problems.

JURGIO PLATERIO KNYGOS VILNIAUS UNIVERSITETO BIBLIOTEKOJE

The article aims to provide analysis of 25 newly identified books from the personal library of the Lithuanian language and writing researcher, bibliographer Jurgis Plateris (Jerzy Plater, 1810–1836); present their thorough bibliographic descriptions with encoded provenances embedded in these books. On the basis of new research data, an updated version of J. Plater’s personal library, described in the monography by Domas Kaunas Bibliotheca Georgii comitis de Plater: Jurgio Platerio biblioteka – Lietuvos knygos kultūros ir mokslo paminklas (Jerzy Plater’s library – a monument of Lithuanian Book Culture and Science. Vilnius, 2012, in Lithuanian), has been presented. Plater’s library image has been update from the thematic, chronological and linguistic points of view. It has been established that currently, in total 116 titles of documents stored in Plater’s library have survived, among them 100 books, 6 scientific journals, the number of graphics and manuscript documents has not changed (one document of graphics) and 9 manuscripts. Given the insignificant number of surviving bibliographic items of Plater’s library, one cannot claim that Jerzy Plater was interested exclusively in one specific field of science or public activities. His library contained historical, legal, linguistic, philosophical and literary items, as well as those from folklore, natural sciences and religion. The available sources lead us to believe that the surviving part of Plater’s personal library is dominated by historical and legal treatises published in the 18–19th centuries in German and Latin languages. There was not a single item attributed to technical and engineering fields, sciences (mathematics and physics), chemistry or medicine. Judging by the surviving documents, the majority of publications were in German, with a lesser number of publications in Latin, Polish, Lithuanian, French and other languages. We cannot claim that all the books stored in Vilnius University library that once belonged to Plater’s personal library have been discovered so far. There is a high likelihood that some ‘hidden’ books (in particular, in the stock of non-Lithuanian books published in the 19th century) might still be discovered. They could contribute to enriching and specifying the big Picture of a most interesting personal library dating back to the start of the 19th century.Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekoje saugomos dvidešimt penkios naujai išaiškintos lietuvių kalbos ir raštijos tyrinėtojo, bibliografo Jurgio Platerio (1810–1836) asmeninei bibliotekai priklausiusios knygos, pateikiami išsamūs jų bibliografiniai aprašai su iššifruotomis šiose knygose esančiomis proveniencijomis. Remiantis naujais duomenimis, atskleidžiamas papildytas Domo Kauno monografijoje „Bibliotheca Georgii comitis de Plater: Jurgio Platerio biblioteka – Lietuvos knygos kultūros ir mokslo paminklas“ (Vilnius, 2012) pateiktas J. Platerio asmeninės bibliotekos vaizdas teminiu, chronologiniu bei kalbiniu aspektais
