The article deals with the cultural activities of A. Jakštas-Dambrauskas, one of the most prominent Lithuanian personalities at the end of the 19th century and during the first three decades of the 20th century. While still in secondary school, A. Dambrauskas became known as a Lithuanian patriot. As a Catholic priest and public figure, he never accommodated himself to Tsarist policy; he encouraged the Lithuanian youth and priesthood to resist the Tsarist ban on the Lithuanian press and to fight for the right to teach children in the Lithuanian language (for such resistance, he was banished by Russian authorities from his native country for some years). From 1902 to 1906, he worked at the Spiritual Academy in St. Petersburg. He soon returned to Lithuania and began directing the Society of St. Casimir, which focused heavily on publishing books, periodicals, and newspapers. He directed the activities of the Society for almost three decades; in fact, he worked there up until his death. Many publications of the Society were initiated and prepared by him, and many of his own writings appeared as the Society\u27s publications. A. Jakštas-Dambrauskas\u27 activities were not only restricted to his work at the Society of St. Casimir. His plans and efforts also extended to other fields of Lithuanian cultural life. For more than 50 years, he worked intensively as a publisher, editor, organizer of Lithuanian periodicals, literary figure, publicist, and researcher. A considerable part of his works addressed problems related to religion, philosophy, art, logic, etc. He was well-known for his numerous reviews of Lithuanian poetry and prose works. As a writer, he published several collections of literary pieces. Among his literary achievements, his biographies of many Lithuanian cultural figures and writers should also be mentioned. He was the first to publish scientific and literary texts in Esperanto in Lithuania (from 1922 to 1926, he edited the newspaper Litava Stelo in this language)

Investigating the development of a certain branch of science and the contribution of every scientist to the field is of great importance. A personal bibliographic index summarizing the results of a scientist\u27s work could be helpful. In Lithuania, various types of personal indices are compiled and issued. First of all, separate issues of exhaustive indices, including all the works of a scientist and literature about him/her, could be mentioned. Usually, they are compiled by bibliographers. Another group consists of indices published in books about scientists (e.g., Andrius Novodvorskis, Viktoras Ruokis, Jonas Kriščiūnas). They are usually compiled as well by bibliographers and cover all the works of a certain scientist and literature about him. The third group presents literature lists which are located at the end of an article (most often devoted to an anniversary) about a scientist. The lists are compiled by the authors of articles—colleagues of scientists. Therefore, the literature lists are non-standard, and only the main works of a scientist are named. Publications about the person are sometimes included as well. The above-mentioned lists only reflect the highlights of the activities of a person and do not suggest the comprehensive picture of the works accomplished. Another group of personal indices refers to the bibliographies compiled by various institutions or private persons (not bibliographers) to celebrate the anniversary of their colleague. This type of indices has just recently become fashionable. However, either personal indices\u27 compilation methods or publications\u27 bibliographical regulations are ignored in this type. The article presents a review of all the mentioned groups of personal indices of scientists in the fields of technology and agriculture, beginning with the first lists of these subjects up to the year 1996

There were 38 Lithuanian emigrant publishing houses in Western Europe between 1945 and 1952. Lithuanian books were also published in some Western European countries, including West Germany, Austria, and Sweden. Private publishing houses constituted the largest group among Lithuanian publishing houses. The most famous was J. Lenklaitis\u27s "Pajūris," followed by the publishing houses of brothers A., P., Vl. Šulčas\u27s "Sudavija," and L. Vismantas (later J. Remeikis) "Venta." Other private publishing houses in Western Europe included A. Giedrailis\u27s "Giedra," T. Vizgirda\u27s "Aufbau," J. Akšys\u27s "Žalgiris," B. Jacikevičius\u27s "Pašvaistė," S. Miglinas\u27s "Elementis," J. Narbutas and P. Indreika\u27s "P. Abelkis," A. Ružancovas\u27s "Kaimynai," J. Šlajus\u27s "Tėviškė," K. Jūra\u27s "Lithuania," and P. Leonas\u27s "Mundus." There were also two cooperative and four stock company publishing houses. Additionally, there were some Lithuanian publishing houses that did not fit into any specific group, as they had sporadic publications, such as "Aitvaras," "Lux," "Nauja mintis," "Almus," "Lituanican," "Perkūnas," "Ramybė," "Romuva," "Sodyba," "Talalgis," "Vaidilė," "Viltis," and "Akiratis." Most Lithuanian publishing houses in Western Europe were founded in the early years after the war (1945-11, 1946-13). Twelve of them operated for one year, nine for two years, three for three years, six for four years, two for five years, and only one for six years. There was competition among publishing houses for the small Lithuanian emigrant book market. Only a few publishing houses remained and operated. Many of the owners and managers of Lithuanian publishing houses began this work only in emigration, but the book publishing traditions that had been established in Lithuania were carried over to Western Europe. Publishing in the early years of the war had a commercial basis, with almost every book generating profit. Another commercial indicator was the dominance of private publishing houses. The experience of Lithuanian emigrant book publishing from 1945 to 1952 influenced the later work of Lithuanian publishing houses in Western Europe, North and South America, and Australia

Analysis of the abstract journal Informatics showed that the heading "History of Informatics and Scientific Information Activities" was established in 1966 and, except for its interruption in 1970-1976, has continued to this day. Under this heading, 96 abstracts of publications devoted to the history of informatics and librarianship have been published. The investigation of subjects revealed that the main trends in the history of informatics research are as follows: problems of its origin; history of the organization of scientific information activities; genesis of its main terms and categories; and analysis and appreciation of the contributions of some scientists to informatics. The article discusses the main conceptions about the origin of informatics, provides a review of publications related to the history of scientific information activities in our country, and surveys appraisals of scientists and their contributions to the development of informatics

The aim of the article is to classify the activities of UNESCO in the field of library work. The main types of these activities are singled out based on the criteria of main functions of international organizations: Governing Activities: These are carried out by determining the main principles of library activities and announcing them in declarations, programs, projects, and other documents. This includes stating the rules in various fields of library work and implementing them through international conventions, as well as creating concepts for the development of libraries at both national and international levels. Controlling Activities: These are carried out by: Stating the existing status. Comparing it with the rules and ideal models. Declaring responsibility for deviations from them. The task is performed by collecting library statistics and other information. This is a major aspect of the work of international organizations. The evaluation of activities in librarianship is formulated as recommendations by UNESCO. Performing Activities: These involve UNESCO directly engaging in library work by sending experts to organize libraries in member states, granting stipends to librarians, purchasing books and equipment for member libraries, and investigating issues in modern librarianship
