On the marigins of history: animals and the Holocaust in Ivan Ivanji's book "Aveti iz jednog malog grada"

    Get PDF
Inspirisani određenim uvidima koji dolaze iz animal studies, u radu ćemo ukazati na raznorodne strategije u oblikovanju takve „druge”, životinjske perspektiveIn recent years, Holocaust studies have been significantly expanding, for example by focusing on the non-human record of this tragedy. As a result, the Holocaust studies incorporate the animal perspective, which parallels Eric Baratay's theses. Emphasising animals' active participation in the most important events of the 20th century, the French historian postulates including this point of view in the mainstream considerations of history. In Serbian literature, the animal perspective manifestly appeared in 2009 when the novel "Aveti iz jednog malog grada" was published. The following paper focuses on the strategies applied by Ivan Ivanji to show the Holocaust from the point of view of dogs (pet animals of Jewish families). Such considerations refer to animal studies, a relatively recent research perspective in the humanities. The article also aims at demonstrating the paradoxical status of Ivan Ivanji's novel, which stems from linking the traditional genre (a chronicle) to the "fantastic" perspective based on discovering the modes of animals' thinking and feeling. The paper's conclusion is the conviction about the impossibility of finishing with the anthropocentric perception of the world and "human" language. What matters is the attempt itself, the effort that results in a literary vision in which the Holocaust manifests itself as the experience that does not belong to human beings only, but whose impact encompasses all the living creatures.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Trauma of the unspeakable and the shaping of identity: fatelessness by Imre Kertesz

    Get PDF
The experience of dwelling in the Nazi concentration camps, which is the foundation of the novel "Fatelessness" (1975) by Imre Kertesz, has been considered here in the context of narrative trauma and its role in shaping identity. Gyuri Koves narrates from a significant temporal distance about what he had survived, without employing his subsequent knowledge, but by re-actualizing his former position, reliving it repeatedly. His permanent doubt towards the meaning of events he takes part in, as well as auto-irony, emphasizes their inconceivability and proves that the experience of trauma is closely connected with the impossibility of witnessing. Memory in Fatelessness also signifies the narrator's penetration through a former emotional blockage, an obvious sign of trauma, and affects the experience of time, inscribes itself in the structure of the novel. The strategy of slowing downtime in the novel, as well as a sudden transition from the story of growing up to the experience of concentration camps, in terms of personality, indicate the cancelling of biographical time: the person is cut off from the family ambient, his ties with the civilized world are broken, and his transformation into a subhuman form of existence takes place. We follow the gradual transformation of Koves's attitudes towards the world and himself, that is, the devastation of his personal and moral integrity and his metamorphosis into a member of the human herd. Koves's ultimate suspicion in enhanced circumstances (when he comes to the hospital), as well as constantly negative expectations and thoughts, as opposed to complete trust which marks his arrest, testify to the hero's complete transformation and to the paranoid progression of the traumatized.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Bruno's perception of the Jews in the novel “The boy in striped pyjamas” by John Boyne

    Get PDF
Predmet rada je razumevanje položaja Jevreja unutar logora očima nemačkog dečaka Bruna u romanu “Dečak u prugastoj pidžami” Džona Bojna. Promena sredine i urođena ljudska potreba za socijalizacijom Brunovu svest usmerava ka ogradi i jevrejskom dečaku Šmuelu, jer jedino to vidi kroz prozor svoje sobe. Nastojaćemo predstaviti kako dečaci percipiraju drugačije, strano i fizičku barijeru u vidu logorske ograde. The subject of this paper is the understanding of the position of Jews in the concentration camp, as seen by a German boy Bruno in John Boyne's novel “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. The change of the ambience and the innate human need for socialization direct Bruno's consciousness toward the fence and a Jewish boy Shmuel, as these are the only things that he can see through the window of his room. We will aim at presenting how the boys perceive the “otherness, foreignness”, and the physical barrier in the form of the camp fence. The boys experience the differentiation between the Germans and the Jewish during World War II and the operation of Auschwitz through the “uniform” and “striped pyjamas”, whereas hatred and the need for destruction are for the unknown. In this manner, the understanding of ideology and its principles within the children's world and their naive consciousness are established. The meeting of cultures and interference is possible when superiority and the need for authority are disregarded, which can be brought about only by a completely free and pure spirit that is inherently devoid of hatred, prejudice, and autocracy. The goal of this paper is to emphasize and analyze the children's perspective that is coupled with the doctrines of adults, whereby we will be able to single out the fundamentally significant principles that can help us understand the Nazi ideology.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Payment of guilt (five Jewish characters in Andrić's short stories)

U Andrićevim pripovetkama, Jevrejima pripada posebno mesto. In Andrić's stories, Jews have a special place. They are presented as individual and collective expressions of the archetypal sacrifice. The aim of the paper was to use the analytical-synthetic method to illuminate the author's approach to Judaism through the analysis of five Jewish characters (Rifka, Paula, Max Levenfeld, Mento Papo, Jewish boys) from the following stories: “Love in the town”, “Words”, “Letter from 1920”, “Buffet ‘Titanic'”, “Children”. We have concluded that the reasons for the emergence of anti-Semitism are very complex and based on the payment of guilt that is inherited, not acquired, that we have not graduated from the school of tolerance, i.e. the unconditional and consistent respect for human beings in their diversity, full dignity and inner freedom and that we need to continue discussing it and working on it.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Staro Sajmište Gestapo Concentration Camp - a place of remembrance and/or a place of oblivion

The cultural monument Staro Sajmište Gestapo Concentration Camp in Belgrade, sumptuous fairgrounds conceptualised and erected to be the impetus to the economic development of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, during World War II was turned into a concentration camp, where some 39,000 souls were interned, and 17,000 of them perished. The preserved fairground pavilions turned into concentration camp barracks now stand as poignant reminders of a tragic period in our recent history. Once WWII was over, instead of becoming a place of remembrance, Staro Sajmište became a place of oblivion, providing residential and office space to its new tenants rather than commemorating those of the past. Although between 1945 and the mid-1980s, the issue of properly marking the place was repeatedly raised, actual action was never taken. Apart from the erection of a modest memorial plaque and a public monument where Holocaust and genocide commemorative events have been held, designating the complex as the national cultural heritage, and adopting the detailed regulation plan to serve as a base for planning the cultural heritage site, the last three decades have seen no progress in properly marking the place of perishing of the Jewish population in Serbia, as well as other victims of the biggest German concentration camp in South-East Europe. The Law on the Staro Sajmište Memorial Complex, passed in 2020, stands as a herald of the changed attitude towards one of the most important memorial points of those who lost their lives in WWII not just in Belgrade, but across Serbia.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

    Modernizacija srednjoevropske periferije: S. H. Gutmann d.o.o. i Našička d.o.o. u industrijalizaciji Slavonije

"This book is the product of long-lasting research into archival records, especially of the Croatian State Archives in Osijek, relating to S. H. Gutmann Ltd. Pursuing the fate of a single company, which is inseparably intertwined with the fate of its founders and owners, it tries to reconstruct the development of lumber industry in Slavonia, a historical province of Croatia, in the period ranging from the late 1800s and early 1900s over to the end of the Second World War. The members of the Gutmann family can be considered the forerunners of the modernization process not only in Slavonia but in Croatia as a whole. They established the lumber and chemical industries and initiated activities necessary for the finalization and maintenance of products of these industries. Moreover, the Gutmann barons were among the largest landowners in Slavonia. The book manuscript emerged from two stages of research. The first stage was completed in 2007 by the defence of an MA thesis entitled “The Role of S. H. Gutmann Ltd. in the Yugoslav Interwar Industry and the Development of the Town of Belišće”. The aim of the second research stage, spanning over a five-year period - from 2012 to the end of 2017 - was to examine the archival material from the Croatian State Archives in Osijek (DAOS) related to the following institutions: S. H. Gutmann Ltd. from Belišće, the Osijek Chamber of Trades and Crafts, Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Osijek, and the Municipality of the City of Osijek. In this research phase, special attention was given to the examination of legal sources - especially the sources documenting the proceedings of the District Court in Osijek from 1934 and 1935, in the famous corruption trial later to become known as “the Našička Scandal”..."

The wall inscriptions of the Novi Sad Synagogue, where Jews concealed themselves behind names or initials carved with a sharp object or written in graffiti, are presented in the monograph and exhibition. A significant portion of the history of the Jewish community, the synagogue, and the city of Novi Sad has been uncovered by the authors through the biographies of possible graffiti writers (through biographical reconstruction of history) and the interpretation of the last traces of Jews.Tekst štampan dvostubačno (text printed in two columns).Videti: [https://arhivvojvodine.org.rs/monografija-poruke-sa-zidova-2-znakovi-jevreja-i-prateca-tematska-izlozba/

Synagogues in Vojvodina: witnesses of the past

    No full text
The only three synagogues that have been left up until these days in Vojvodina are those in Subotica, Novi Sad and Zemun. Previous research shows that as many as 76 synagogues could be found in a large number of settlements all over Vojvodina. During or after World War II, many of them were demolished. The still existing ones are not just religious buildings anymore, their purpose has changed, although they represent a valuable historical, cultural, civilizational as well as architectural heritage. The great majority of the Jewish temples, however, ended up erased from this region forever. The testimonies about them represent a valuable historical and intercultural monument that confirms not only the continuity of the Jewish presence, but also those civilizational, cultural, economic and social features that the Jewish people permanently weaved into Vojvodina, and then beyond. Tekst štampan dvostubačno (the text is printed in two columns)
