Jasenovac: from Holocaust (hi)story to sacrifical narrative
The paper analyzes the transformation of the films about Jasenovac - a historic trope that tends to stand side by side with the perennial mythomoteur of Kosovo and is equally used to boost the contemporary political agenda from the Holocaust narratives into the identity-building national sacrificial narrative and cultural trauma. The case studies are feature fiction films from The Ninth Circle (Deveti krug, 1960), Black Birds (Crne ptice, 1967), Remake (2003) to The Diary of Diana Budisavljević (Dnevnik Diane Budisavljević, 2019) and Dara of Jasenovac (Dara iz Jasenovca, 2021). After a brief historical overview of the Holocaust film and films about Jasenovac, the research focuses on the film Dara of Jasenovac as placed in the intersection of the Hollywoodized Holocaust melodrama, cultural trauma, and national sacrificial narrative. The sacrificial mechanism (Girard, 1972, 1982) being the key component of both, works from the (top) national to the (bottom) individual level of the film. The Jasenovac narrative of victims and sacrifices, thus, is used to render the Serbian nation sacred. Simultaneously, within the notion of cultural trauma, it allows the narrativization of the event so "horrendous (...) that (it) leaves indelible signs" upon the group/national consciousness, marking "their memories forever and changing their future identity in fundamental and irrevocable ways" (Alexander 2002).Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
Charles Patterson and Jacques Derrida on the animal Holocaust
Ili kao što je Theodor W. Adorno izjavio da Auschwitz započinje u klaonici kad ljudi pomisle - "To su samo životinje" (prema Patterson 2005: 91).In the article, I review the postulates of Charles Patterson's book Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust (2002), which he dedicates to the Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, and the postulates of J. Derrida's article The Animal that Therefore I Am. More to Follow (1997, 2002), published the same year, who from various positions, Patterson from an activist and Derrida from a theoretical, problematize the contemporary Holocaust over industrial animals (animals in the meat and dairy industry). Both scholars point to speciesism (discrimination on the basis of species) as a contemporary form of the Holocaust, where the strategies of constructing industrial concentration camps/slaughterhouses are architecturally similar to the extermination process performed in death camps during World War II. In short, as Theodor Adorno said - "Auschwitz begins wherever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks: They're only animals" (cf. Patterson 2005: 91).Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
King Solomon in Jewish and Serbian oral tradition
Rad istražuje predstavu kralјa Solomona/Solomuna unutar jevrejske i srpske usmene baštine. The paper explores the portrayal of King Solomon in Jewish and Serbian oral heritage. The complex figure of King Solomon is inspected by looking into legends of the Old Testament, Biblical Apocrypha, Midrashic and Talmudic literature, and Serbian oral folk storytelling. Besides examining the international composition of the motifs, mythical-magical, demonological, and esoteric layers, and cultural and genre transformations, I have insisted on pointing out the fixed motifs, structural and semantic aspects in the establishment of the old-testimonial ruler as a figure recognizable in any folk literature. The genesis and possible directions of the motif and syuzhets development are not axiomatically observed as a direct impact of Jewish on Serbian culture and literature, although the literature of the Old Testament has undoubtedly made a pivotal effect on Serbian folk literature, but as a process of “net weaving” of recurring motifs, syuzhets, and their interconnecting with the figure of King Solomon.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
Joy and sorrow of Samokovlija's Jews
A writer and advocate of the disenfranchised, Samokovlija wrote about everything that made up their world of emotions: both sadness and pain, small joys and rare happy moments which filled the lives of his heroes, and to which he devotedly surrendered in the role of the mediator to the outside world. The characters are insulated, barely porous to external influences, and that is why he devoted himself to each destiny individually to show the essence of the Jewish soul. Samokovlija is not only a writer of sorrow and death, since together with his characters he knows how to laugh, illuminate a tired face with the rays of sunshine, and be filled with the quiet inner joy that secretly hides in the depths of every being. With the diversity of motifs, he created a universal world of literary reality. “His realism necessarily emerges from a correct, fair observation of the opposites of relations and events in human society and its economy” (Samokovlija 1946: 1-7). In that reality, in interpersonal relations, he pointed to evil, to misery, wanting to give his contribution to the understanding of actions caused by cause-and-effect factors. The world of his literary sufferers is made up of craftsmen and people who barely survive their hard work.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
Jewishness of Gustav Mahler
Time je dostigao najvišu moguću profesionalnu poziciju u gradu izvanredne muzičke tradicije. The emergence of a generation of brilliant Jewish musicians, writers and thinkers in Vienna was fast and continuously during the second half of the XIX century. Gustav Mahler, among them, was appointed director of the Viennese Court Opera. He thus achieved the highest musical positions in a city outstanding for its musical tradition. The ‘new sort’ of anti-Semitism that developed in Vienna in the "fin de siècle" period was of a special variety. However, when Mahler converted to Catholicism, racial strains altered greatly. A new racist dogma arose, which perceived Mahler’s appointment as part of a conspiracy of Jews to dominate Germans. The reasons why Mahler resigned as director of die Vienna Court Opera involve many more factors and subtleties, even concerning the expression of anti-Semitism. What does it mean (for Mahler) to be a Jew in Austrian Empire? It is on these elements that this article attempts to shed light on. This work seeks to illuminate Mahler’s Judaism from different angles, everything that it directly and indirectly influenced, as well as the composer’s personal position on this issue, which we find in his correspondence with friends and family members.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
About Erich Eliša Samlaić’s music and newly discovered composition "Poet and spring", for male voice and piano
Sheet music in the manuscript of the forgotten Jewish composer and musicologist Erich Eliša Samlaić (1913-1944) has recently been found in the heritage of composer Milenko Živković, which is taken care of by the Committee for the Protection of the Serbian Musical Heritage of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The sheet music in question is of the composition "Poet and Spring", for a deep male voice and piano. Erich Samlaić was educated and worked in Belgrade and Zagreb, and tragically died in the Jasenovac concentration camp in 1944. Encouraged by the discovery of the aforementioned score, we started collecting other available compositions by Erich Samlaić, including "Ballad", for mixed choir, "Three Pastels", for female choir, "Džunaj", for mixed choir, "Sephardic Theme of the Balkans", for violin and piano and Jewish melody of the Balkans, for violin and piano. The discovered compositions of Samlaić are presented and analyzed in this paper through individual processing of each one separately. The paper aims to actualize and provide a clearer insight into the creation of this composer, particularly in the context of the discovery of a new composition that was not previously known to exist. Haggadah. Saying about the Exodus
Tako je došlo vrijeme da i mlada Jevrejska zajednica Crne Gore stampa svoju Hagadu, u najboljoj tradiciji puno starijih jevrejskih zajednica...“ (deo iz Uvodne reči Vrhovnog rabina Crne Gore Luciana Moše Prelevića)."How is this holiday - Pesach - different from all our other holidays? Because the Talmudic wise man say that Pesach is at the same time a holiday of freedom, but also a holiday of the creation of the Jewish nation, a holiday without which all of this would not be possible. It is the basic holiday around which everything else revolves. By celebrating Pesach, we are not commemorating the events (the exodus from Egypt) from 3500 years ago, but we are going through a transformational experience of achieving freedom, an experience that our forefathers went through first, giving us that character trait permanently. The Jewish concept of freedom includes the responsibility of accepting the consequences of one's choice. Being free means that a person decides for himself about his future, about the world in which he wants to live, and that is why each of us must sit down, think and evaluate, must create a system of values, and form criteria in order to know what he wants, in which direction he wants to go and which things he wants to achieve in life. That is why the Talmudic sages formed the Seder, the Passover dinner, through which, in fourteen steps, we should achieve the desired level of freedom. The book that guides us through the Seder is called the Haggadah. The Haggadah (Hebrew: הַגָּדָּה "telling") is a Jewish text that outlines the order of the Passover Seder. Reading the Haggadah at the table during the Seder dinner is the fulfilment of the mitzvah (God's commandment) for every Jew to tell his son the story from the Book of Exodus, about the Israelites who were delivered from slavery, including the exodus from Egypt by the hand of God (And you shall say to your son on that day, saying: That is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt (Ex. 13:8). According to Jewish tradition, the Haggadah as we have it today (the so-called Haggadah of the Diaspora) was composed during the period of the Mishnah and the Talmud, although the exact date is unknown. The Haggadah with commentary is the most printed book in the history of Judaism, there is almost no Jewish community that has not printed its own version. So the time has come for the young Jewish community of Montenegro to print its own Haggadah, in the best tradition of much older Jewish communities..." Name and number: Kragujevac tragedy 1941
The shooting in Kragujevac on October 21st 1941 represents one of the biggest German crimes on the territory of Serbia during the Second World War not only by the number of victims but also according to the way of carrying out. During the war and in the postwar period crime in Kragujevac ascended to a symbol of the suffering of the Serbian people. Not reconciling themselves to the occupation of their country the Serbia n people replied with diversions, sabotage and uprising. In September 1941 the uprising grew into a people’s movement. Because of unburdening its campaign in the East, Germany took resolute measures in order to crush the uprising. The task was imposed upon General Franz Bohme and he, from September 22nd up to the beginning of December, succeeded in crushing the uprising in Serbia, at least for a while. A blood trail of about 26.000 killed people and burned down Serbia was left behind. Obeying Bohme’s order from October 10th 1941 his soldiers carried out a lot of executions throughout Serbia as a sign of reprisal. The German casualties in combat with joint chetnik and partisan forces on the road between Kragujevac and Gornji Milanovac on October 16th 1941 were a pretext for the execution in Kragujevac. In that combat, the Germans had 10 killed and 26 wounded soldiers. According to a regulation from General Franz Bohme’s order they decided to execute 100 men for one killed and 50 for one wounded German soldier. The order was given by Major Otto Desch, commander of the 749th regiment, and Major Paul Konig, commander of the 1st battalion of the 724th regiment was in charge of the act of execution. Due to the intervention of Kreis/commandant of Kragujevac Otto von Bischofshausen executions began in surrounding villages on October 19th 1941, because villages were “breeding ground and base for bandits”. Since the number of executed was insufficient it was decided to continue with executions in Kragujevac. On October 20th several thousand men were arrested and imprisoned in gun storage sheds in the suburbs. Prisoners from the local jail and a Jewish-communist group were executed the same evening. The execution began at 7 o’clock in the morning and finished by 2 o’clock in the afternoon on October 21st 1941. Among several thousand executed men there were several hundred students of Kragujevac secondary schools and boys between the ages of 11 and 15. The data about the executed are different and range from 2.300, according to German sources, up to 12.000. Prevailing popular belief is that about 7.000 men were executed. That is the number which is also accepted in official historiography.
