Features of the essayistic work of Walter Benjamin

Za takvu vrstu pregleda neophodno je bilo prethodno steći uvid u široki spektar Benjaminovih tematski i formalno raznovrsnih tekstova, koji se kreću u rasponu od visokorefleksivnih priloga o istoriji lјudskog progresa, mestu umetnika i statusu umetnosti naspram izazova kapitala i tehnologije, manifestacije duha epohe i čovekovog delovanja u istorijskom kontekstu, preko književnoteorijskih i analitičkih studija, do autobiografskih sećanja, dnevničkih beleženja, teza, crtica i aforističkih zapisa. In this paper, we deal with the characteristics and dominant aspects of the essayistic work of the German thinker of Jewish origin, Walter Benjamin. The focus of the paper is on Benjamin's specific microphilological sense, polyperspectivism and fragmentation, extraordinary attitude towards minor phenomena, treatment of seemingly trivial things, giftedness for detail, observation, and reflection, as well as clarity and precision of thought that sinks deep into the essence. For this type of review, it was previously necessary to gain insight into a wide range of Benjamin's thematically and formally diverse texts, ranging from highly reflective contributions on the history of human progress, the place of the artist and the status of art versus the challenges of capital and technology in the historical context, through literary theories and analytical studies and theses, to autobiographical memories and diary and aphoristic entries. While Benjamin's essays are reminiscent of narrative records, the manifested experience is entrusted to the abstraction and transcendence of its subject, which can occasionally be discontinuous, jumpy and digressive, elliptical, theological-mystical, and metaphorical, where Benjamin, like an intellectual flaneur, in his permanent emergence, moves unhindered in the direction of the lucidity of his thought, which celebrates the triumph of the gaze penetrating the phantasmagoria of the things.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

“Arguably Jewish” - Franz Kafka's jewishness

Zanimlјiv i relevantan izbor Kafkinih misli o jevrejstvu iz njegovih dnevnika, pisama i priča, pokazaće delikatnu poziciju neprestanog kolebanja između jevrejstva, cionizma i latentnog ateizma. This paper's aim is to analyze and present the complexity of the Jewishness of Franz Kafka, paying special attention to the cultural, political, and territorial background and context of Prague, Czech Republic, in the years prior to the outbreak of the Great War. The main topic will therefore be Kafka's personal and subjective feelings of Jewishness and not the analysis of his work from the perspective of Judaism. Kafka's engrossment in the Judaic tradition (mysticism, Kabbalah, Zionism) and their identification with it resulted in both positive and negative reflexes. Apart from the notable insights by Benjamin, as well as poststructuralist theories put forward by Deleuze and Guattari, we especially emphasize the article by Judith Butler from 2011, "Who Owns Kafka?" which problematizes Kafka's national and cultural affiliations. An interesting and relevant selection of Kafka's own thoughts on Jewishness, collected from his diaries, letters, and short stories, shows the delicate position of the never-ending oscillation and ambivalence between being Jewish, Zionism, and latent atheism.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

From a distance - Sylvia Plath, Holocaust poems and the question of "non-victim" identification

U kontekstu psihološko-feminističkog i istorijskog pristupa, rad naglašava važnost preispitivanja postojećih i otvaranja novih perspektiva u odnosu onog individualnog i kolektivnog, empatijskog i univerzalnog u lјudskoj prirodi. One of the most striking metaphors in the poetics of the controversial American poet Sylvia Plath represents her identification with the Nazi persecution of Jews in World War II. There is a well-known tendency of criticism to see Plath as a poet who speaks about her own suffering in the world of a patriarchally oriented dominant culture in her pictures about the Holocaust. The work tries to establish a balance between reading Plath as one of the most influential voices of confessional poetics of the 20th century and her status as an author who is able to internalize personal pain into the collective one, to put herself at the service of the collective consciousness, the consciousness of the suffering of the Jews in the Holocaust. In the context of the psychological-feminist and historical approach, the work emphasizes the importance of reviewing existing and opening new perspectives on the relationship between individual and collective, empathic and universal in human nature.

Herceg Novom i Risnu...""... The largest migrations of the Jewish people in the Mediterranean, from the end of the Middle Ages, included the Montenegrin coast. A very important link in these migrations is the mediation of the Herzegovinians and their caravans, which transported Sephardic Jews, exiles from the Peloponnese, on horseback, most often from Dubrovnik to Thessaloniki. Therefore, it is not questionable that the Jews, after the persecution from Spain in 1492, temporarily or permanently settled in the cities that today cover the Montenegrin coast, such as Herceg Novi and Risan ... Jerusalem in the religious epic "History of the Last Destruction of the Holy City of Jerusalem" by Vikentije Rakić

Our research includes poetic images of Jerusalem in the religious epic "History of the Last Destruction of the Holy City of Jerusalem" (1804) by Vikentije Rakić. Applying the literary-historical and analytical method, we have established the degree of Judeo-Christian ideas about the city of Jerusalem in the Serbian literature of pre-romanticism: since the perspective of the epic subject gradually narrows, from the geographical panorama of the city to the Temple, the structural figures of the Jewish concept of the city - the temple, are manifested. When it comes to the poetic identity of Rakić's song, we conclude that the mentioned religious epic does not originate on the trail of Serbian medieval pilgrimage practice, especially due to the direct intertextualization of the historical work The Jewish War by Josephus Flavius. Rakić approaches medieval writers, but thanks to his exotic taste for the Middle East (Jerusalem), the symbolism of numbers and colours, and rhyming pentameters, he sings in the spirit of Serbian pre-romanticism - the stylistic direction of the Enlightenment.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

That "sly effect of biography": short story "The stateless one" by Danilo Kiš

    Get PDF
Taj portret, čija se geneza može pratiti od Kišovih prvih pesama, a građenje i brušenje u njegovom beletrističkom i esejističkom opusu sve do poslednjih tekstova i eksplicitnih izjava u intervjuima, u priči "Apatrid" otkriva se kao simbioza inspirisana biografijom nekoliko stvarnih ličnosti: Edena fon Horvata, koji je poslužio kao prototip za junaka Egona fon Nemeta, ali i samoga Kiša, te Adija, Kestlera, Kafke, Broha, Muzila, Kundere, Konrada...The research focus of this paper is the unfinished short story "The Stateless One" by Danilo Kiš, viewed both in the context of the poetics of the collection "The Encyclopedia of the Dead" and the writer's aim to present a typical portrayal of a Central European writer/intellectual, who carries somewhere in his genes "the disease of disturbing diversity" - that "dangerous blood type", which will determine his Ahasuerian destiny. As far as the legendary Ahasuerus is concerned (who is a product of Christianity), the emphasis is put on his sin, while Kiš's Ahasuerus, a stateless man who becomes a Jew only when the others see a Jew in him, represents a paradigm of victimhood of the 20th century, by means of which the author confirms the ethical position of Hourglass ("It is better to be among the persecuted ones than among the persecutors") and continues to bring to life "one sunken world" of the Central European Jews between two world wars. That world and the Central European portrayal, whose genesis can be traced back to Kiš's first poems ("Biography"), and the formation and development in his belletristic and essayistic opus, all the way to his last texts and explicit statements in interviews, is revealed in the short story "The Stateless One", as a symbiosis inspired by the biographies of several real persons: Odon von Horvath, who served as a prototype for the hero Egon von Nemeth, but also Ady, Kiš himself, Kestler, Kafka, Broch, Musil, Kundera, Konrad etc.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

"They speak through their absence, through what never will be": on the presence of absence in Albahari's novels "Cink" and "Mamac"

    Get PDF
The paper aims to explore the modernist fragmentariness of the discourses which form the basis of Albahari's novels "Cink" and "Mamac". Focusing on the principle of the presence of absence, through the figures of the father and mother, the paper aims to show how the story is created from the non-presence, which is not denied but relied upon. By recreating the family narrative, the aim is to demonstrate the range of modernist valences in the cracks of the unfinished story, which the author desires to complete. The father figure and the mother figure perform a necessary influence on the author's relationship with the story, which is why we shall demonstrate to what an extent there is an interdependent relationship between the non-present, the primarily important, and the actual, which is of lesser importance for the discourse of the novels. The manner in which the narrator presents the parents is the manner in which the modernist discontinuity and the contradictory subject integrate themselves into the basis of the novel of the 20th century.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Traces of death in the novel "Project Lazarus" by Alexander Hemon

    Get PDF
Uspostavlјa se društveno-kulturološki status Jevreja s početka 20. veka. U romanu se prepliću dva narativna toka: prvi tematizuje jevrejske imigrante početkom 20. veka, dok je tema drugog narativnog toka nastajanje prvog, odnosno Vladimir Brik, sto godina kasnije nastoji da istraži i zabeleži smrt Lazarusa služeći se tzv. mapiranjem, odnosno ponovnim posećivanjem mesta gde je Lazarus boravio. Stradanje i poetički svet romana "Projekat Lazarus" prepoznaju se u neprestanom dodelјivanju značenja dok je, zapravo, to svet uvek odgođenog značenja. Smrt Jevreja koji strada pod neočekivanim i još uvek neobjašnjenim okolnostima ostvaruje semantički potencijal kroz konstantno poigravanje centra i margine, hijerarhije i razlike, znaka i označenog, vere i sumnje, stabilnog i odgođenog. The paper is based on the constitution and semantic stratification of the motifs of death in Alexander Hemon's novel "Project Lazarus". The novel intertwines two narrative currents: the first one deals with Jewish immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century, while the theme of the second narrative is the emergence of the first, that is, Vladimir Brick, who a hundred years later tries to investigate and record the death of Lazarus using so-called mapping, that is, by revisiting the places where Lazarus resided. The intention is to discover the truth about the murder of the Jew, but in the end, it remains variable, arbitrary, and relative. The meaning of death, that is, the meaning of the murder of Lazarus Averbuch, was explored with the help of Saussure's distinction between the sign and the signified, although the signified was in a Derridean sense postponed and constantly supplemented with new meanings. The novel is a world of always delayed meaning, in which truth is incomprehensible. The death of a Jew who dies under unexpected circumstances is transformed into an assassination attempt. The victim thus becomes a murderer, and all the arguments that contribute to that are based on the social-ideological-ethical-religious context. Identity marked and recognized in death (as dead) is an area of flourishing semantic meaning/signification. The paper also deals with the establishment of the Lyotard schism, from which it will follow that the Jewish side had suffered injustice that cannot be proven. The semantic potential is realized through the play of centre and margin, hierarchy and difference, sign and signified, guilt and innocence, truth and lies, faith and doubt, stable and delayed.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
