Transformation of the bestiary complex of the Old testament "Book of Jonah" in "A novel of London" by Miloš Crnjanski

    Get PDF
U "Romanu o Londonu", bestijarijumska figura postaje dijabolički simbol, koji nadilazi pojedinca i zaroblјava ga u mrežu prozirnog zla. Promišlјajući o figuri kita u navedenim delima sagledaćemo preobražaj starozavetnog bestijarijumskog kompleksa u kontekstu romana Crnjanskog. In this paper, we examine the symbolic range of the bestiary figure of the whale. The diabolical cosmogony in "A Novel of London" and God's creation in the "First Book of Moses" are different in that God's creation is fulfilled through life's continuity, while the diabolical blocks the sphere of being through transparency and objectification. The figuration of the sky fish stands in contrast to Yahweh's absolute and the idea of life since diabolical wakefulness is rooted in it. The world of "A Novel of London" incorporates an animal, while its body stands as a closed form, created as a mere object in the sensory register of a human. Through the symbol of an animal, the diabolical potential of the novel is constantly being kept up to date. The Devil of transparency creates the illusion, namely, retells the orderliness of Yahweh's world, but with the tendency to keep its activities and presence secret. Diabolical personification, embodied through the appearance of the sky whale, participates in the play of hiding the vacancy of demonic inflow, which annuls the prophetic discourse of this bestiary figure. The whale cannot be a part of the chain that makes the vow since it is a diabolical "conversio". The animal in "A Novel of London" opens the horizon of vacancy and abyss that drags the characters into the fictional world of the novel. Neither is the pseudo-duplicate of the sky fish annihilated, nor is Ryepnin's death declared at the end of the novel.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Serbian literature as a source for Holocaust research and understanding: the Serbian and Jewish narrative of suffering in Serbian literature

    Get PDF
This paper is an introduction to the study, in the form of an essay, about the Serbian narrative of suffering in the Second World War embodied in the work of Branko Ćopić. This narrative, with all its characteristics, is considered in comparison with similar narratives of the great Serbian-Jewish writers Danilo Kiš, Aleksandar Tišma, and David Albahari, about the Holocaust or in connection to it. The similarities and differences between these two narratives, and in connection to certain elements of the Holocaust studies, testify to the traumatic memories of collective persecution, but also to the intermingled narratives of suffering. We consider it necessary to revive the subject within the culture of remembering the victims of the Second World War, especially today in the time of denial, distortion, and manipulation of facts regarding the Holocaust. Unlike in some other European cultures, in Serbian culture, competitive victimhood is not as present. When Serbian writers write about the Holocaust, they write about everyone, because starvation, as well as resistance through anti-fascist struggle, was common. The Serbian and Jewish narratives of suffering within Serbian literature are extremely fertile ground for this analysis. Thus, Serbian literature becomes an open field for Holocaust research and a source of a better understanding of the literary narrative of suffering.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije

Kapo - the title of the impossibility of existence between "we" and "they"

U radu se ispituje način oblikovanja figure kapoa u srpskoj književnosti proučavanjem drame "Nebeski odred" Đorđa Lebovića i Aleksandra Obrenovića i romana "Kapo" Aleksandra Tišme. The paper examines the way of shaping the figure of the kapo in Serbian literature by interpreting the drama "Heavenly squad" by George Lebović and Aleksandar Obrenović and the novel "Kapo" by Aleksandar Tišma. The analysis of the psychological motivation of the heroes and the observation of their actions leads to the observation of similarities in the way in which their personality was changed by life in the camp. The process of dehumanization, characteristic of the camp, did not achieve complete success in their cases. The partial preservation of the identity of these characters separates them from the other members of the camp. These characters are doubly separated from the environment to which they belong - by their position, but also by their experience of themselves in the environment in which they find themselves. Halfway between the position of the perpetrator and the position of the victim, the kapo becomes a figure whose existence is impossible through belonging to someone, but only in opposition to everyone

Jesam našao originalni tekst na mađarskom, ali ne i Magdin prevod...""I didn't hear the story about the war journey of my grandfather, uncle Imre Schreier, who everyone in the family called Baća, even though I spent summers and winters in Stara Moravica. That story could only be heard in the family from my mother Magda, and a little from Imre's second wife Rozalija, who the neighbours called Rozi, and my mother when the conversation was in Serbian - Rozika. Our grandchildren called her - Teta. Those, basically Serbian names - Baća and Teta, were given to them by my father, Živko, who did not speak Hungarian. Since some time ago, the family shyly talked about the fact that Magda, at one time, translated Imre's memories from the war from Hungarian into Serbian and that she wrote a relatively extensive accompanying text, also in Serbian. I looked for those two texts and couldn't find them, even though they were with me all the time. I did find the original text in Hungarian, but not Magda's translation..."Sećanje na Imru Šrajera koje je Slobodan Grozdanić uputio uredništvu "Politike" (str. 94-98).Memory of Imra Šrajer sent by Slobodan Grozdanić to the editors of "Politika" (pp. 94-98)

The foundation of Sephardic musical tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the "World Music" scene

The Jewish tradition is manifested through various musical forms, which is the subject of the study of ethnomusicology, but at the same time, it is related to the field that ethnology deals with, since it refers to culture and its transmission. In that sense, this paper will deal with both secular and spiritual forms of Jewish Sephardic music in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Since the arrival of the Sephardic Jews in this area in the narrower sense or the Balkan Peninsula in the broadest sense at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, the music of their community has been shaped by the music of Others, and vice versa. The local province, urban forms, oriental melodies, Arabic-Spanish-Jewish forms, as well as the culture of living, are just some of the influences in the traditional (folk) music of Sephardic Jews in the mentioned area (Bosnia-Herzegovina). We believe a thread can be established that shows the continuity of musical forms that have found their place on the World Music scene, through the analysis of the mentioned forms and creativity of Flory Jagoda, Ladino ensemble, and other performers of recent date.

Danas, u Međimurju postavljamo dvadeset i osam kamena spoticanja, devet u gradu Prelogu, a devetnaest u gradu Čakovcu, u spomen na njihovo postojanje. They were our neighbours, friends, co-workers, people who made up our lives, people with whom we created our day-to-day life and planned our future. Today, we are laying twenty-eight stumbling stones in Medjimurje nine in Prelog and nineteen in Čakovec - to remember their existence. The date 2 September 2021 is an important day for Čakovec, Medjimurje and Croatia as well as a particularly important day for the Jewish community. We are laying down the stumbling stones as a sign of permanent remembrance of the twenty-eight members of the Jewish community of Medjimurje who lived here peacefully and were torn away from their homes. They were taken away and killed in the death camps of Nazi Germany for one reason alone - because they were Jews. Medjimurje was left poorer for a significant and reputable community, a Jewish community. Nothing is as it once was, nothing will be as it could have been, and it is for us to teach, to remember and not to forget" (from the foreword by President of the Jewish Community of Čakovec Aleksandar Pal).Tekst uporedo na hrvatskom i engleskom jeziku (parallel text in Croatian and English)

Rosenfeld's Jewish Woman's Cookbook was published in Hungarian before 1925 by the Minerva Printing House in Subotica. The first edition has 372 pages. The supposed second edition has 377 pages with an addition of another nine pages. In the holdings of the Szechenyi National Library (Országos Szechenyi Könyvtár) in Budapest, under number 74,984, Mrs. Rosenfeld's work "Jewish Woman's Cookbook" is represented by the third edition from 1938. This third, expanded edition has 377 pages and 11 pages of supplements. It is a publication of the Schlesinger Library in Budapest, and produced by the Femés Book Printing House, also from Budapest. In the Hungarian-speaking area, between the two world wars, Mrs. Rosenfeld's very popular kosher cookbook was apparently also reprinted. We know that Maccabi Publishing House published this book in 363 pages in 1993 under the title "The Jewish Woman's Book: The Kosher Kitchen". True, Herman Rosenfeld's wife is listed as the author of the recipes, but the catalog of the National Library of Szechenyi also contains a correction (!Martonné).Na prednjoj korici: "Interreg Danube Transnational Programme Rediscover".Sadrži i recepte iz knjige: A zsidó nő szakácskönyve / Rosenfeld Mártonné

    Anti-Semitism in modern conspiracy theories

    Get PDF
Only a few decades after the Holocaust, anti-Semitic ideas that should have been buried with the Third Reich are again present in the "mainstream" political discourse, especially in the second half of the 2010s. In their current form, they are generally "served" in the same package as a host of other xenophobic, Islamophobic and racist ideas propagated by the extreme right in Europe and America. This method proved to be especially effective after the migrant crisis in 2015. Then the theories about the alleged conspiracy of Jews, bankers and "globalist power centres" that strive to destroy "white Europe" by forced settlement of the population from Third World countries were resurrected. Although far-right ideas have been ubiquitous on the European and American political scene since 1945, it was only with the advent of the Internet and the increased presence of the widest population on social networks that the most effective platform for spreading fake news in history was created.
