Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" through anti-Semitism prism in three performances: Burgtheater Vienna (1943), Yugoslav Drama Theater Belgrade (2004) and Venice Ghetto (2016)

The paper will discuss the perception of William Shakespeare's play "The Merchant of Venice" in three theatrical performances that differ according to their date and place of performance, and the historical and socio-political circumstances in which they were created. Through the analysis of these performances of plays in the Burgtheater in Vienna (1943), the Yugoslav Drama Theater in Belgrade (2004) and in the Venice Ghetto (2016), we can see how Shakespeare's original text was instrumentalized in different historical moments and under different historical circumstances into the service of considering current issues at that time. We will consider to what extent "The Merchant of Venice" is truly anti-Semitic and how the Nazi policy used the potential of anti-Semitism in this drama to its advantage, and how the other two recent performances had the exact opposite task: to break stereotypes about Jews and express rebellion against the same anti-Semitism

The future of Holocaust remembrence: postmemory in "East-west street" by Philippe Sands

    Get PDF
Predmet rada jeste analiza romana “East-West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity” Filipa Sendsa, objavljenog 2016. godine, s fokusom na način s kojim se on suočava s prošlošću koju nije direktno iskusio ali i o kojoj ništa ne zna. The subject of the paper is the analysis of the novel “East-West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity” by Philippe Sands, published in 2016, and how he conveys the history, specifically, the one related to the Holocaust, through literature. Since Sands is the grandson of a Jew, he is a representative of the so-called “third generation” writers, and his novel can be symbolically called a work of post-memory. In the first part of the paper, emphasis is placed on the testimonies of the sons of the Nazis as opposed to Sands’ own testimony. In the second part of the paper, the author’s combination of micro and macro histories is examined. Without binary opposing history and memory, the paper analyzes more complex and challenging relations between them. As the works of child survivors can be seen as tangible evidence of their own search for identity, the novel is also analyzed as Sands's search for his own identity. It is concluded that, despite the plethora of personal histories present in the novel, Sands takes the Nuremberg Trials as a turning point because the trial raised the question of whether it is more important to protect an individual or a group, and whether it is possible to build an identity, outside the group we belong to. In doing so, Sands combines his own personal history what an official one.Istraživanje sprovedeno u radu finansiralo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije (Ugovor o realizaciji i finansiranju naučnoistraživačkog rada NIO u 2022. godini broj 451 -03-68/2022 14/ 200198)

Rad se bavi pitanjem života Jevreja tokom Okupacije u Francuskoj u Drugom svetskom ratu u romanu “Sarin ključ” autorke Tatijane de Rone. The research deals with the issue of the life of Jews during the Occupation in France in the Second World War in the novel "Sarah's Key" by the author Tatiana de Rosnay. First of all, it is shown what a Jewish family faces, but also all Jews on a daily level - in what way they had to be different from others and because of that they suffer. Then the characters are represented as members of the Jewish population, as well as the Val d'Hiv raid, and the life of Jews in the camp, i.e. what they faced, what they were condemned to and how they dealt with everything. In the end, we will look at the symbols that are present in the novel, which carry a hidden message, and which is revealed in this part of the work through examples and explanations

Pristup dramskom delu Laure Papo: tekst i njegova značenja

Laura Papo Bohoreta's theatre, presented through the analysis of plays of the Sephardic tradition and social dramas, is the central topic of this work. On the one hand, we focus on the process of emancipation of the female characters, on the other, we highlight the need to preserve tradition. Two processes that the author combines in her dramatic work, either through conflicts between generations or through convergences between them. We present some of her texts as an example of her way of considering theatre, where we find no gap between the dramatic text and the performance. Link: [http://dhs.ff.untz.ba/index.php/home/issue/view/25]

Holokaust i etika turizma: memorijalna mesta u naracijama o odgovornosti

The issue of Holocaust tourism might be a quite sensitive, but nevertheless very important topic in the domain of Holocaust remembrance. As tourism is often associated with leisure activities, it is quite challenging to put tourism into darker contexts of history and death. Also, different people coming to the Holocaust-related places with different motives make the issue of designing educational tours even more complex. This paper will try to expose questions related to dark tourism, Holocaust tourism, and auratic memorial places, and discuss ethical approaches to the Holocaust memory at the beginning of the 21st century. The text argues for the tourist experience as a memorable and educational tool with an active transformational potential, which will turn the visitor into a witness who further contributes to the survival of the legacy of the Holocaust in the future. Thematic section "The Ever-Emerging Memory: Holocaust at the Crossroads of Media, Ethics, and Consumerism" (Tematski odeljak "Iznova pojavljujuće sećanje: Holokaust na raskrsnici između medija, etike i konzumerizma")

According to the available written data, the old Jewish cemetery in Borak dates back to 1630. The cemetery is located directly above the transit road built in the early 90s of the 20th century (before the start of the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984), whose route coincides with the former Sarajevo-Višegrad narrow-gauge railway route. The cemetery was built on a slope and occupies an area of 31,160 m2, and on a total of seven plots there are over 3,850 tombstones, four memorials erected in memory of the victims of fascist terror, and several cenotaphs. In 1962, according to the project of architect Zlatko Ugljen, an Ashkenazi ossuary was built in the cemetery after the exhumation of the old and new Ashkenazi cemeteries in 1950. The cemetery has ceased to be active, i.e. burials have been no longer carried out since 1966. In 1923/1924. a chapel (Ciduk Adin) was built in the northwestern part of the cemetery according to the decision of ing. Scheiding, and in the period from 1926-1930. The cemetery complex of the Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004. By the Decision of the National Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments and Natural Rarities in Sarajevo on November 12, 1951, the building was placed under state protection.Ovaj studija je objavljena kao prilog "Jevrejskog glasa" br. 90, 2023. godine (this study was published as a contribution to "Jewish Voice" no. 90, 2023)

The virtual museum "Jasenovac: death camp - the Land of the living" is a multimedia project born from the need to comprehensively approach the phenomenon of the Jasenovac concentration and death camp system, both from the historical and factual side, as well as from the artistic side. The author intends to develop and nurture a culture of memory as part of a value system based on humanity, and respect for the life and rights of every human being through an objective and grounded approach to this, probably the most painful, topic of our national history. The "Virtual Museum Jasenovac" project, for now, consists of three different, interconnected, segments that, each in its way, bear witness to the Jasenovac camp and its victims. The web portal, the mobile application and the interactive installation "The Iron Book" represent three narrative expressions of the museum, where the complex themes of suffering and crime are approached in a multidimensional way, thus contributing to their more complete perception and understanding.

Media representation of the Jewish community of Bosnia and Herzegovina: content analysis of Bosnian daily newspapers (2005-2021)

    Get PDF
The study aimed to examine the characteristics of Bosnian daily newspaper coverage of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Jewish community for the period 2005-2021. Content analysis of relevant journalistic messages (N=1173) was employed to examine the frequency of their appearance, positioning and formatting patterns, dominant thematic fields, distribution of voices, and overall tone. The results of the analysis point to the contradictory features of media coverage of the Bosnian Jewish community, the limited possibility of achieving "symbolic contact" with the minority community, and the affirmative context of presentation. The study yields empirically grounded insights that allow a better understanding of the process of journalistic coverage of minority groups in multi-ethnic states marked by a history of violent conflicts. The study highlights the relevance of the theoretical knowledge of journalism as a performative practice that participates in the process of (re)defining symbolic boundaries between different social groups.Link: [http://dhs.ff.untz.ba/index.php/home/issue/view/25]

The life path of Javer Effendi Baruch during the Austro-Hungarian administration

    Get PDF
Based on available archival material and periodicals, the author reconstructs the life story of Javer Effendi Baruch, one of the most respected and wealthy citizens of Sarajevo, during the Austro-Hungarian administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The personality of Javer Eff. Baruch has not been thoroughly researched in the historiography so far. It is known that Baruch gained a social reputation during Ottoman rule. After the arrival of Austria-Hungary in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he not only managed to preserve and strengthen his social position but also acquired enviable wealth. This paper aims to present the unusual life path of a Sephardic from Sarajevo. The paper analyzes his life path from a supplier for military needs, a customs tenant, a Sarajevo city councillor, to a convict for insulting majesty. Based on the available historical materials, the existence of changes in the relationship between the then administration and society towards Javer Effendi Baruch after 1887 is examined.Link: [http://dhs.ff.untz.ba/index.php/home/issue/view/25
