Sephardic surnames in Yugoslav territory before the Holocaust and their geographical distribution
At the Zoom Shabbat held on September 16, 2022, historian Miloš Damjanović from Kosovska Mitrovica gave a lecture on "Sephardic surnames in Yugoslav territory before the Holocaust and their geographical distribution". In this lecture, the author spoke about 248 Jewish Sephardic surnames. Certain characteristics of specific surnames, their Spanish-Romanian or Hebrew origin, i.e. their linguistic basis, are mentioned. Spanish Surnames indicated either their place of origin or their occupations or some words from Spanish everyday life. Hebrew surnames indicated individual biblical figures, Jewish tribes, or geographical areas related to ancient Israel, or even angels (mentioned in the Bible). Some of the surnames were indirectly related to the Bible and the Jewish religious heritage, some referred to temple attendants and some to specific professions mentioned in the Bible. A particular group of surnames consisted of those that originated from Arabic words and were characteristic above all for those Jews who lived in Spain during the Arab domination of Spain. In the second part, all 248 surnames are mentioned with some comments on some of them.Predavanje održano 16. septembra 2022. godine preko Zoom platforme (Zoom Šabat) sa početkom u 19.30 časova. The lecture was held on September 16, 2022, via the Zoom platform (Zoom Shabbat) starting at 7:30 p.mTrajanje 46:45 minuta (duration 46:45 minutes)
On several undocumented victims of the Holocaust in the Independent State of Croatia
In the territory of the satellite, Nazi creation called the Independent State of
Croatia, and since its inception in 1941 up until the very end of the Second World War in 1945, the criminal Ustasha regime had actively, systematically, and brutally committed genocide against Serbs, Roma, and Jews. The mass and planned killing of Jews began soon after the declaration of independence of this puppet, Hitler-controlled state, making the Ustasha regime in Zagreb the initial actor in implementing “the final solution to the Jewish question” - that is, the biological extermination of Abraham’s children. This occurred even prior to the ideological and political patrons of this goal ultimately declaring it officially at a Nazi leader conference of 1942 in Wannsee. The Holocaust, which was continuously and mercilessly implemented in the territory of the Independent State of Croatia throughout its existence, resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 Yugoslav Jews. Even after a full 75 years since the cessation of the manhunt against and liquidation of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia and despite persistent and meticulous research of generations of historians, the identities of many victims remain unknown. This paper will present multiple Jewish individuals, unidentified until this point, who lived to witness the creation of the Independent State of Croatia but whose wartime fate is still undiscovered. Thus, data on these people could not be found in any of the existing records of survivors, either missing or killed. Without firm proof of the exact time when their lives ended, they cannot be reliably placed among Holocaust victims. However, the discovery of these persons may be a good starting point for further examining their wartime fate and reliably determining whether they belong to the categories of Holocaust victims or survivors.Izložbeni katalog "O nekim nepopisanim žrtvama Holokausta sa prostora NDH" dostupan preko linka (The exhibition catalog "On several undocumented victims of the Holocaust in the Independent State of Croatia" is available via the link) [https://jevrejskadigitalnabiblioteka.rs/handle/123456789/3194
Jews in the war and after the war
Claims konferencija je odobrila i financirala baze podataka žrtva i preživjelih Holokausta.
Poslije II svjetskog rata žrtve Židova u Holokaustu su, uz znatno učešće Židova u antifašističkoj borbi, osiguravale Židovima status i žrtve i pobjednika.
No velike su promjene i u drugim židovskim zajednicama Europe. Zato, radi usporedbe, u ovoj knjizi dajemo i analizu najpoznatijih demografa o stanju i suvremenim problemima židovske populacije u svijetu, posebno u Europi.
This book is dedicated to those who survived the Holocaust, a generation that not only lived through the horrors of the Holocaust (many as children) but after it, rebuilt Jewish communities, founded families, finish lost education, achieved successful careers, and made contributions to society as a whole. They are the only real witnesses of the Holocaust who had to live with the memories of what they experienced, the loss of loved ones, suffering the physical and psychological consequences, and loss of property, and education, depending on humanitarian organizations and Jewish communities. In appreciation to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) for supporting this research project. Through recovering the assets of the victims of the Holocaust, the Claims Conference enables organizations around the world to provide education about the Shoah and to preserve the memory of those who perished
Sefardska politika na Balkanu 1900-1940: doktorska disertacija
This thesis historicises Sephardi politics in the Balkans and examines why and how the idea of Sephardi diaspora became a political vehicle in the twentieth century. The Sephardim stem from the Jewish refugees expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in the late fifteenth century, who settled across the Mediterranean and remained connected through a common set of religious practices, mercantile networks, and language(s). For most of this diasporic history, the Sephardim shared culture but did not have the capacity to make political claims. The research focuses on the Balkans, where the ruptures of modern history mobilised the Sephardi diaspora as a political body for the first time between the 1900s and the late 1930s. Within this context is analysed how this Sephardi-centred politics presented significant challenges not only to empires and nation-states but also to the Jewish national movement and, finally, how the movement itself shaped these larger actors. The thesis explains how Sephardim gained political significance in local contexts during the 1910s and 1920s when Jewish and European politics were intertwined and mutually dependent. The politicisation of the Sephardi diaspora influenced greater political outcomes in two crucial moments for the Balkans just before and after the First World War. Moreover, the spokesmen of Sephardi politics had ardent and distinct responses to most movements of modern Jewish history: emancipation, Zionism and, socialism. The author explores how Sephardicentred politics challenged the substance and direction of Jewish intellectual debates. She emphasises how Sephardi politics opened space for minority politics within the Jewish national politics, but also within multinational, multi-ethnic societies, and specifically within the Austro-Hungarian empire and interwar Yugoslavia. In all of these ways, this work sheds light on minority movements as agents of social change and their unintended influences. Autorka istražuje kako sefardicentrična politika dovodi u pitanje suštinu i pravac jevrejskih intelektualnih debata. Department of History, Classics and Archaeology Birkbeck, University of London.
This brief essay considers the role that postmodernist theory is playing in enabling Holocaust denial. It analyzes two recent texts on key aspects of twentieth-century Yugoslav history: an article by two political science scholars on the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement and a volume by a group of Croat historical negationists about the death camp of Jasenovac-Stara Gradiška. Despite the many fundamental differences in subject matter and author expertise and perspective, this essay argues that the two texts share key similarities. It illustrates that postmodernism’s emphasis on political power structures, hegemonic discourses and ideological frameworks at the expense of empathy, empiricism and historical context represent an approach which Holocaust negationists are increasingly likely to apply. Analizira dva novija teksta o klјučnim aspektima jugoslovenske istorije dvadesetog veka: članak dvoje teoretičara političkih nauka o osnivanju Pokreta nesvrstanih i ediciju grupe hrvatskih istorijskih negacionista o logoru smrti Jasenovac - Stara Gradiška.
Svedočenje u kamenu: arhitektura rata od Klugea do Heršera i Vajcmana
The article contributes to creating an outline of the significant postwar theoretical approaches that examine architecture's role, purpose, and significance in war and war crimes. Starting from the Clausewitz thesis that “war is not autonomous”, this paper attempts to reveal “the blood that has dried in the codes” (Foucault), politics hidden behind the four walls of architecture. From the concepts of Brutality in Stone (Kluge), Warchitecture (Herscher) or Forensic Architecture (Weizman), through the lenses of architecture, the article exposes war, politics, and ideologies that shape and drive architecture by reimagining and repurposing it both in its primary, functional and cultural, representative sense. A shift from “the era of the witness” (Felman) to the decade of evidence (Weizman) promotes architecture and its remains to the level of science, global governing, and law. The connection of timely-distanced emancipatory practices influenced by Holocaust studies establishes a discursive field for architecture as a performative rather than representative practice. The theoretical frame of the postwar landscape as second nature (Adorno) is crucial for discussing the role of architecture in the Holocaust. Furthermore, it stresses the work of Herscher and Weizman as a contribution to the critique of the depoliticized processes of resolution of contemporary war crimes and post-conflict reconciliation. Architecture as a societal practice could potentially have a central position in memory and knowledge production, as well as the production of a counter-public sphere. Arhitektura kao društvena praksa može imati centralno mesto u proizvodnji znanja i sećanja, kao i u stvaranju kontrajavne sfere (Kluge).Thematic section "The Ever-Emerging Memory: Holocaust at the Crossroads of Media, Ethics, and Consumerism" (Tematski odeljak "Iznova pojavljujuće sećanje: Holokaust na raskrsnici između medija, etike i konzumerizma")
Gog and Magog: apocalyptic geography, chronography and phenomenology of the prophet Ezekiel
reči τὰ βιβλία, što znači "knjižice".
It is well known that the Bible is essentially a small library of 66 books and that its name comes from the Greek word τὰ βιβλία, which means "books". It is less well known that the structure of some of her books is similar to her own. Thus, the book of the prophet Ezekiel and the book of Revelation, in which Gog and Magog are mentioned, can be small libraries. Given this circumstance, if we want to study them, we should first get acquainted with their entire content, and then choose the segment that particularly interests us. Although the extracted segments can be a whole in themselves and independent of the rest of the book, this does not mean that they have no points of contact or even coincidence with the segments of some other biblical books. A real example of that is the topic we are dealing with - Gog and Magog.1. izd. (1st ed.
Role of librarians in tendance Holocaust remembrance
Ti načini su, nužno, interdiscplinarni, jer podrazumevaju preklapanje polja interesovanja između predstavnika bibliotečko-nformacione delatnosti i tradicionalnih humanističkih disciplina, pre svega istorije i istorije književnosti, ali donose i metodološku specifikaciju same naše struke, u njenim strogo definisanim okvirima...""The experience of the Holocaust marked the history of the 20th century. It opened up questions in all areas of the humanities, from history, sociology, psychology and political science, to literature, art and philosophy. The role of librarians in this process was and remains unavoidable: a good part of the material on the crimes committed in the Second World War is stored in library funds, librarians are intermediaries between that material and interested users, but their role should not be over, there are ways to involve librarians more directly in this research and education. These methods are necessarily interdisciplinary, because they imply overlapping fields of interest between representatives of library and information activities and traditional humanities, primarily history and history of literature, but also bring the methodological specification of our profession, within its strictly defined framework ...
Three literature pictures of Jews and Muslims co-existence in Ottoman Bosnia
Rad donosi tri književne slike suživota Jevreja i muslimana u osmanskoj Bosni. The paper presents three literary images of the coexistence of Jews and Muslims in Ottoman Bosnia. The pictures chronologically represent a hodogram of coexistence from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century. The first picture is Sušić's short story "Šta učini Don Daniel Rodriga", in which the author first shows the early relationship between Bosnian Muslims and Jews in trade between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian Republic, and then the social controversies that accompanied the process. The second picture is based on Bašeski's "Ljetopis" and presents a picture of coexistence in the daily life of Sarajevo in the 18th century, where it does not only include the beautiful and positive, but also the negative representations. However, this picture shows the dynamic connections between Muslims and Jews at the national level, but also the differences and tensions conditioned by the social, religious, and political context. The third picture represents the positive relationship between Muslims and Jews in the example of literary representations of Sarajevo’s Purim. Here we analyze the different interpretations of this event, as well as how much they, regardless of evident contradictions, together influenced the shaping of the discourse about this holiday of Sarajevo’s Jews.Link: [http://dhs.ff.untz.ba/index.php/home/issue/view/25
Steps of the past, present and future: Handbook I
Projekat teži rasvetljavanju i prevenciji postojanja današnjeg antisemitizma, anticiganizma i diskriminacije. Ovim projektom, lokaliteti stradanja i nasleđa u Beogradu, Subotici i Novom Sadu postaju mesta obrazovanja i učenja, kao i prostori za aktivizam, i time doprinose stvaranju otvorenijeg, inkluzivnijeg i slobodnijeg društva. U Priručniku I, predstavljeni su sledeći sadržaji: Jevrejski praznici, simboli, životni ciklus; Jevrejska istorija; Istorija Jevreja u Srbiji; i Neformalna jevrejska edukacija. The project "Steps of the Past, Present and Future" aims to preserve memories and educate about localities that are forgotten, abandoned or unknown to the citizens, and are of exceptional importance for Jewish and Roma heritage, the Holocaust and Porajmos, and the general public. The main part of the project is the creation of free educational tours for the public, which will contribute to the development of critical historical awareness and bridging the prejudices that exist against the local culture and history of Jews and Roma. The project aims to clarify and prevent the existence of today's anti-Semitism, anti-Gypsyism and discrimination. With this project, the sites of suffering and heritage in Belgrade, Subotica and Novi Sad become places of education and learning, as well as spaces for activism, thus contributing to the making of a more open, inclusive and free society. In Handbook I, the following contents are presented: Jewish holidays, symbols, life cycle; Jewish history; History of Jews in Serbia; and Informal Jewish Education
