The collection "Sremsko krvavo leto 1942" (Dušan Lazić-Gojko: "Sremske novine",1982) documents the data on the suffering of the people of Srem during 1942, since the coming of Ustasha captain, lieutenant colonel Viktor Tomić in Srem at the end of August 1942. The book does not include Ustasha's war crimes done before the coming of Vikotor Tomić in Srem. Thus, the case of the arrest of a Jewish resident in Stara Pazova in early May 1942 was not recorded either. The reason why all the people in Srem were shot can be seen in the announcement of the Ustasha Prečki mobilni sud (mobile court) dated August 8, 1942, which was in session in Stara Pazova and condemned the shooting of 18 inhabitants from Stara Pazova and Novi Karlovac"... On the other hand, about 50 Jews from Stara Pazova were rounded up without accusation, trial or proof of any crime by the occupying-Quisling Volksdeutsche authorities, and driven to disappear and it is not known where they ended their lives. There are no notes about them in the official existing documents of the Federation of Jewish Communities. This is the story of the suffering of the Jews from Stara Pazova, based on the available documents, of which only the ancestral cemetery remains in this place, which has been maintained for years by no one according to religious custom.Na 66. nagradnom konkursu Saveza jevrejskih opština Srbije, za 2022. godinu, rad je nagrađen otkupom (this work was awarded at the 66th prize competition of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia for 2022)

The subject of the work are lexemes excerpted from selected dictionaries of the Serbian language that are related to Judaism. The aim of the work is to single out lexemes that define concepts about Judaism in order to create a dictionary based on the selected corpus and show which linguistic units define the researched concepts within the Serbian language. The creation of the dictionary was motivated by the idea of the necessity of getting to know Jewish culture through language and preserving awareness of the Holocaust as an event that determined the past and future of every nation at any stage of development. It is expected that in the separate dictionary, the largest number of lexemes will refer to religion, followed by violence and persecution, which determined the fate of the Jews. The material was formed by the method of observation combined with the method of analysis, in order to determine the difference between the lexemes recorded in the two dictionaries created in a period of 17 years, using a comparative method.Istraživanje sprovedeno u radu finansiralo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije (Ugovor o realizaciji i finansiranju naučnoistraživačkog rada NIO u 2022. godini broj 451 -03-68/2022 14/ 200198)

Learning after Auschwitz: the Holocaust in children's literature exemplified by John Boyne's novel "The boy in the striped pyjamas"

Bruno, devetogodišnji protagonista, zbog svog uzrasta i dečje nevinosti i pod porodičnim uticajem, veruje u očevu dobrotu i bezopasnost logora. The goal of the paper is to examine the significance of the novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" by John Boyne for teaching about the Holocaust, as well as its suitability and effectiveness in transmitting the experience of the Holocaust to younger generations. In the structure of the work, three interpretation perspectives are distinguished that contribute to a comprehensive overview of the novel - ideological, ethical and pedagogical. An ideological perspective of interpretation, based on studies on ideology in children's literature, will deal with discovering ways of establishing the dominance of Nazi ideology in the novel. Bruno, the nine-year-old protagonist, due to his age and childhood innocence and under the family's influence, believes in his father's goodness and the harmlessness of the camp. However, his curiosity and inquisitive spirit made him question the differences between himself and everyone in the "striped pyjamas". Through the characters of Bruno and Shmuel, a Jewish boy, we highlight the teaching of E. Levinas about taking responsibility for others as the only way to oppose inhumanity. A pedagogical perspective, finally, highlights some of the common obstacles in teaching the Holocaust to younger ages and the benefits of using this novel. The subtitle "Fable about the Holocaust", the novel by J. Bojna implies the need to discover the lesson and the educational nature of the work. The importance of writing and teaching Holocaust narratives is emphasized as, according to Theodor Adorno, the proper education after Auschwitz is the only way to point out the danger of all types of discrimination and attempt to prevent events such as the Holocaust from being repeated.Istraživanje sprovedeno u radu finansiralo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije (Ugovor o realizaciji i finansiranju naučnoistraživačkog rada NIO u 2022. godini broj 451 -03-68/2022 14/ 200198)

The lovely song of Israel: the Messianic visions of the Prophet Ezekiel

U osmom veku Osija, Amos, Isaija i Mihej. U sedmom Naum, Sofonija, Avakum i Jeremija. The history of the Jews is strange. They are the only people whose distant future is written in the distant past. The guardians of that past, and the future in it, are their prophets. Let's remember the oldest ones first. Obadiah and Joel were active in the ninth century of the old era. In the eighth century Hosea, Amos, Isaiah and Micah. In the seventh, Nahum, Zephaniah, Habakkuk and Jeremiah. During the Babylonian captivity, Daniel and Ezekiel, and after the return from exile, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Their works are preserved in the Jewish Bible, which Christians call the Old Testament. In order to understand them properly, it is not enough to just read their records, we must devote ourselves to them, compare them with each other, dive deeply into them, must study them in the light of Jewish and world history. Given that this book will only deal with the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel, more precisely with its 37th chapter, it is wise to listen to the admonition of John B. Taylor (1929-2016), an English bishop and theologian, who in his extensive study of this biblical book warns of what we can experience if we rely exclusively on a superficial knowledge of the text itself

In Sarajevo, since the formation of the Jewish religious community, the religious education of children has developed simultaneously. First, four-grade elementary schools, where mostly male children went, came forward. Later in the 17th century, Talmud-Torah secondary school was developed, while Yeshiva was only formed in the second half of the 18th century. Until the establishment of the Belgrade Yeshiva by Rav Yehuda Lerma in 5395 (1635) and the Sarajevo Yeshiva by Rav David Pardo in 5528 (1768), there were no rabbinical schools in the territories of the Western Balkans and neither rabbis. In the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, there was a need for qualified personnel for the religious education of Jewish children and youth according to general laws, in lower and secondary schools. On June 13, 1928, the Jewish Secondary Theological Seminary was opened, which began operating on November 25, 1928. The Seminary operated until 1941, when it was closed on April 6 by Nazzi Germans. The paper aims to present the development of Jewish religious education from the arrival of Sephardim to Sarajevo in the 16th century until 1941. To show the importance of the development of rabbinic and Talmudic studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the reputation of Sarajevo's Jewish religious schools in Europe and the world.Link: [http://dhs.ff.untz.ba/index.php/home/issue/view/25]

Holocaust Remembrance in Yugoslavia 1945-1991: Doctoral dissertation

    Get PDF
This dissertation analyzes the phenomenon of Holocaust remembrance in socialist Yugoslavia in a period from 1945 to 1991. The thesis focuses on different formats of memory: individual, social, political and cultural memory, and also on different aspects of collective historical consciousness, such as monuments, public commemorations, museums, a system of education and art including film, literature and sculpture. The main goal of the dissertation is to analyze and explain the ways and mechanisms of creating collective Holocaust memory, to mark the most prominent agents, keepers and creators of remembrance, to study their political ideology and memorial practice and, above all, to underline the role of the State and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in this process. Regarding that, this thesis is a contribution to the researching politics of past and ideological use and abuse of history in Yugoslav socialism, as well as the contribution to the understanding of Yugoslav authentic position in terms of international relations, Yugoslavian connections with Israel and World Jewish Congress and political attitudes of Yugoslav communist authorities toward the Jewish community and the difficult and tragic heritage of war crimes committed during the World War II. The State and the Communist party had the greatest influence on creating collective memory on the Holocaust and historical image of World War II. Through the activities of the Federation of Yugoslav War veterans (SUBNOR) Socialist Alliance of Working People of Yugoslavia (SSRNJ) and official institutions, the State and the Party shaped the generalized and blurred image of civil victimhood that became the part of national historical experience. On the other side, the greatest qualitative contribution to the affirmation of the Holocaust as the unique and original phenomenon of the 20th century was given by the Jewish community in Yugoslavia, that was, at the same time, the most important, as Jay Winter call it, agent of memory, although its’ social influence was much less intensive than the influence of the State and the Party
