    The Holocaust: crime, commemoration and denial/distortion

    Predavanje dr Davora Stipića „Holokaust: zločin, komemoracija i poricanje/distorzija“ je treće predavanje prvog kursa pod nazivom "Uvod u Holokaust" koji se realizuje u okviru projekta „Holokaust u zemljama bivše Jugoslavije“. Ovaj projekat je prvi ovakav projekat u regionu i ima za cilj da pruži dublje razumevanje Holokausta na prostoru bivše Jugoslavije, podstakne kritičko mišljenje, promoviše toleranciju i empatiju, kao i da istakne konstantnu važnost obrazovanja o Holokaustu u regionu. Projekat se sastoji od četiri zasebna online kursa sa po tri predavanja i jednog šestodnevnog seminara uživo, koji se organizuje nakon završetka četvrtog kursa u Beogradu i Skoplju. Svi kursevi, kao i seminar, bave se temom Holokausta i antisemitizma na prostoru bivše Jugoslavije. Svaki od četiri online kursa obuhvata dragocena opšta znanja iz pomenutih tematskih okvira, ali i fokus na pojedine delove regiona i iskustvo Holokausta u njima.Dr Davor Stipić's lecture "The Holocaust: crime, commemoration and denial/distortion" is the third lecture of the first course entitled "Introduction to the Holocaust", which is being realised within the project "Holocaust in the countries of the former Yugoslavia". This project is the first of its kind in the region and aims to deepen understanding of the Holocaust within the former Yugoslavia, encourage critical thinking, promote tolerance and empathy, and emphasise the ongoing importance of education about the Holocaust in the area. The project includes four online courses, each with three lectures, and one six-day live seminar, organised after the end of the fourth course in Belgrade and Skopje. All courses, as well as the seminar, address the topic of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism in the former Yugoslav territory.     Kad su saveznički vojnici od siječnja 1945, na svom prodoru prema unutrašnjosti Njemačke, otkrivali jedan za drugim masovne grobnice sa žrtvama nacističkih logora u neposrednom susjedstvu sela i gradića, prisilili su stanovništvo na uredno pokopavanje samo površno pokrivenih leševa. Većini mještana bilo je to prva izravna konfrontacija sa žrtvama masovnih ubojstava - konfrontaciju koju nisu mogli izbjeći ni oni, koji bi tvrdili da nisu imali pojma što se događa iza ograda s električnim bodljikavim žicama. Saveznički su vojnici, promatrajući scene sahranjivanja leševa, stekli dojam da su se ljudi ipak zamišljali nad činjenicom da se masovno ubijanje odvijalo u njihovoj blizini. Poneki se možda i zapitao, hoće li se sud zanimati za njihovo držanje naspram ovih zločina i zato istraživati njihovu suodgovornost. Zato su se požurili uvjeravati savezničke zapovjednike: „Mi smo obični ljudi, mi nemamo ništa s time…“. Pandan u hrvatskoj povijesti: Jedan od najutjecajnijih ustaša, načelnik Ustaškog stožera u Dubrovniku, Ivo Rojnica, još će 60-ak godina nakon „Jasenovca“ ustvrditi: „Istrebljivanje Židova u nas, u Hrvatskoj? Ne, mi nemamo ništa s time. To je bilo stvar Nijemaca“.When Allied soldiers discovered mass graves with victims of Nazi camps near villages and towns in January 1945, they forced the population to bury only superficially covered corpses in order. For the majority of the locals, it was their first direct encounter with the victims of mass murders, a confrontation that could not be avoided, even by those who claimed to have no idea what was going on behind the electric barbed wire fences. Allied soldiers who observed the corpse burial scenes got the impression that people were still thinking about the fact that mass killing was taking place nearby. Some may have wondered if the court would be interested in their actions in light of these crimes and thus investigate their co-responsibility. That is why they rushed to persuade the allied commanders, saying, "We are ordinary people; we have nothing to do with it..." A parallel in Croatian history: Ivo Rojnica, the head of the Ustaša headquarters in Dubrovnik, remains one of the most influential Ustaša, claiming 60 years after "Jasenovac" that Jews were exterminated in Croatia. No, we had nothing to do with it.     U ponoć 9. svibnja 1945. kapitulacija Njemačkog Reicha stupila je na snagu, nacističke su snage na svim frontama položile oružje. Otprilike 14 milijuna civila dočekalo je taj dan, živi, no bez krova nad glavama, bez domova, bez članova obitelji, s još neslućenim ožiljcima na tijelima i dušama. Do dana kapitulacije Njemačkog Reicha, gusta mreža logora – logora za ratne zarobljenike, za civilne radnike, koncentracijske logore i logore u kojima se provodio nacistički program „konačnog rješenja židovskog pitanja“, nije se „raspetljala“. Iz Njemačkog Reicha, te iz europskih zemalja okupiranih od nacističke Njemačke (od Norveške, preko Danske, Nizozemske, Belgije i Francuske, do Italije, Grčke, Albanije i okupiranih jugoslavenskih predjela) vratili su se preživjeli, sami, na svoju ruku, ali i u organiziranim transportima. While implementation of the „Final Solution“ has been detailedly investigated, there is one top sin in the current history of the Shoah which has not yet been thoroughly examined: Evacuation marches of the then-living inmates of the concentration and extermination camps in the eastern regions of Poland, in the (today) Baltic regions and in the (today) Ukraine, westwards, towards the territory of the Reich – „death marches“, a term coined probably by those who were forced to march. The first part of this volume concentrates on these marches, remembered by the survivors as events outside the camps, as a public performance for citizens, the „bystanders“

    Ovo istraživanje se najpre tiče analitičkog uvida u način na koji se fikcija i fakcija susreću i prepliću u prvom romanu Ivana Ivanjija, u kojem će opisati sopstveno iskustvo logorovanja - “Čoveka nisu ubili”. Kako bi se ovaj roman mogao determinisati žanrovskom odrednicom lično svedočenje (a to je bitno jer kao takvo, Ivanjijevo svedočanstvo logorovanja postaje i svojevrstan istorijski izvor za razumevanje Holokausta), jedan deo istraživanja biće posvećen pokušavanju dešifrovanja paradigmatskih osobenosti pomenute odrednice, te načina na koji će se one uobličiti kroz analizirani roman. Pored samog romana, u tumačenje će biti uključeni i izvodi iz Ivanjijevih intervjua, kao i drugih romana, osobito kada je u pitanju roman “Čovek iz pepela”, s obzirom na to da on donosi priču iz Buhenvalda, sagledanu iz sasvim drugačije, udaljenije perspektive u odnosu na onu koju autor zauzima u svom prvom svedočanstvu. Cilj ovog, pa i potonjih istraživanja sličnih tema, jeste uvideti kakav status u istorijskom poimanju Holokausta može zauzeti književna produkcija prve generacije preživelih logoraša, autora pedesetih godina 20. veka.This research primarily concerns an analytical insight into the way fiction and faction intersect and intertwine in the first novel of Ivan Ivanji, in which he describes his own experience of internment - "The Man Was Not Killed." Since this novel can be determined by the genre designation of personal testimony (which is important because, as such, Ivanji's testimony of internment becomes a unique historical source for understanding the Holocaust), one part of the research will be dedicated to attempting to decipher the paradigmatic characteristics of the mentioned designation and the ways in which they will be shaped through the analyzed novel. In addition to the novel itself, the interpretation will also include excerpts from Ivanić's interviews, as well as other novels, especially regarding the novel "The Man from Ashes", given that it presents a story from Buchenwald observed from a completely different, more distant perspective compared to the one the author occupies in his first testimony. The aim of this, as well as subsequent research on similar topics, is to gain insight into what status the literary production of the first generation of survivors from concentration camps, authors of the 1950s, can occupy in the historical understanding of the Holocaust

    Dialog międzypokoleniowy w przestrzeniach technologicznych i edukacyjnych w kontekście nauki o historii i kulturze żydowskiej

    The paper discusses the importance of engaging technological and educational spaces in contemporary processes of learning about Jewish history and culture. The author explores the potentials of merging contemporary technology with innovative approaches to education, particularly in fostering and improving intergenerational and intracommunal dialogues. To analyze the role of the immersion effect in extended educational realities, as well as its significance for intergenerational dialogue in small Jewish communities, two case studies from Serbia are presented and analyzed: the Midrasha project and the Interactive Tour of Jewish Belgrade. The exhibited results show the transformational potential of two different learning programmes in the context of extended educational realities at the crossroads of technology and education. These findings might contribute to further reflections and practices in Jewish education and education in general, as well as to the encouragement of intergenerational dialogues.Ovaj rad diskutuje važnost angažovanja tehnoloških i obrazovnih prostora u savremenim procesima učenja o jevrejskoj istoriji i kulturi. Rad istražuje potencijale stapanja savremene tehnologije i inovativnih pristupa učenju, posebno u kontekstu negovanja i unapređenja međugeneracijskih dijaloga unutar zajednice. Kako bi se analizirala uloga efekta imerzije u produženim obrazovnim stvarnostima, kao i njegov značaj za međugeneracijske dijaloge u malim jevrejskim zajednicama, prikazane su i analizirane dve studije slučaja iz Srbije: Midraša projekat i Interaktivna tura Jevrejski Beograd. Izloženi rezultati pokazuju transformacioni potencijal dva različita obrazovna programa u kontekstu produženih obrazovnih stvarnosti na preseku tehnologije i obrazovanja. Ovi nalazi mogu doprineti daljim osvrtima i praksama u oblasti jevrejskog obrazovanja i obrazovanja uopšte, kao i jačanju intergeneracijskih dijaloga.Artykuł omawia znaczenie zaangażowania przestrzeni technologicznych i edukacyjnych we współczesnych procesach nauczania o historii i kulturze żydowskiej. Analizuje potencjał łączenia nowoczesnych technologii z innowacyjnym podejściem do nauczania, szczególnie w kontekście wspierania i rozwijania dialogu międzypokoleniowego w obrębie społeczności. Aby przeanalizować rolę efektu immersji w rozszerzonych rzeczywistościach edukacyjnych oraz jego znaczenie dla dialogu międzypokoleniowego w małych społecznościach żydowskich, przedstawiono i omówiono dwa studia przypadku z Serbii: projekt Midrasz oraz projekt Interaktywna wycieczka po żydowskim Belgradzie. Zaprezentowane wyniki pokazują transformacyjny potencjał dwóch różnych programów edukacyjnych w kontekście rozszerzonych rzeczywistości edukacyjnych na styku technologii i edukacji. Otrzymane wnioski mogą przyczynić się do dalszych refleksji i praktyk w dziedzinie edukacji żydowskiej i edukacji ogólnej, a także do wzmacniania dialogu międzypokoleniowego

    Roots and wings: remembering the Serbian royal officers in Camp Oflag VIc, Osnabrück

    "Was wir tun, tun wir aus einer Verpflichtung. Einer Verpflichtung gegenüber jenen, die das Lager in Osnabrück durchlitten haben, gegenüber den serbischen königlichen Offizieren, die gemeinsam mit Kameraden verschiedener Glaubensrichtungen und Nationalitäten unter den schwersten Bedingungen Ehre, Glauben und Identität bewahrten. Wir tun es, weil unsere Geschichte nicht nur eine Sammlung vergangener Ereignisse ist, sie ist auch eine Verpflichtung, ein Vermächtnis. Unter den über 6.500 gefangenen Offizieren waren die meisten serbisch-orthodoxen Glaubens, doch auch fast 500 jüdische Offiziere sowie Slowenen und Angehörige anderer Völker des damaligen Königreichs Jugoslawien teilten dieses Schicksal. Ihre Solidarität in Gefangenschaft, ihr Glaube an die Freiheit und ihr gegenseitiger Respekt bilden das Fundament dieser Erzählung. Im Jahr 2025 begehen wir 80 Jahre seit der Befreiung des Lagers Oflag VIc in Osnabrück. Das ist nicht nur ein Jahrestag. Es ist ein Moment des Gedenkens, vor dem Mut der Gefallenen, aber auch im Angesicht einer Zukunft, die das Recht hat, zu wissen. Unsere Arbeit, sei es durch Ausstellungen, Bücher, Zeugnisse oder Geschichten, ist ein Akt kollektiven Erinnerns, des Respekts und der Hoffnung. Wir schulden das auch uns selbst. Allen von uns, die heute auf dem alten Kontinent leben, aber auch jenen jenseits des Ozeans in der serbischen Diaspora. Wir schulden es unseren Vorfahren, aber noch mehr unseren Kindern. Denn wenn wir vergessen, wer wir sind und woher wir kommen, werden wir auch vergessen, wohin wir gehen. Dies ist nicht nur eine serbische Geschichte. Es ist auch eine europäische und globale Geschichte über Freiheit, Identität und die Widerstandskraft des Geistes. Und deshalb bauen wir heute mit „Wurzeln und Flügeln“ Brücken zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft, zwischen Osnabrück, Belgrad, Nikšić, Novi Sad, Chicago und allen Orten, an denen das serbische Herz schlägt. Свима нама који данас живимо на Старом континенту, али и онима преко океана, у Новом свету, међу српском дијаспором. Дугујемо то нашим прецима, али још више нашој деци. Među više od 6.500 zarobljenih oficira, većina je bila srpske pravoslavne veroispovesti, ali među njima je bilo i gotovo 500 oficira jevrejske veroispovesti, kao i Slovenaca i pripadnika drugih naroda tadašnje Kraljevine Jugoslavije. Njihova solidarnost u zatočeništvu, njihova vera u slobodu i međusobno poštovanje čine temelje ove priče. Ove godine obeležavamo 80 godina od oslobođenja logora Oflag VIc u Osnabriku. To nije samo godišnjica. To je trenutak kada se poklanjamo pred senima hrabrih, ali i pred budućnošću koja ima pravo da zna.     O Heleni Helerovnoj. Život i delo poljskog književnog prevodioca

    Helena Hellerówna, a Polish interwar literary translator, was born in Cracow on February 27th, 1899, and died as a U.S. citizen in New York on June 25th, 1978, under the name Helen Antonia Atlas. She translated, among others, awarded works (e.g., Fiancée d'Avril by Guy Chantepleure or Le repos de Bacchus by Pierre Boileau) and recognised authors (e.g., André Maurois, François Mauriac, or Maria Peteani), frequently signing as Hel Hel or H.H. Her career was interrupted by WWII, during which Hellerówna became a victim of the Holocaust. Her contribution to the Polish translation community has been largely forgotten, to the point where even the Polish National Library has no accurate information about her. This paper presents a preliminary study on Helena Hellerówna as a translator, with the aim of reconstructing her biography and compiling a complete list of her translations, to facilitate further research on her works within the framework of Translator Studies (Chesterman 2009). The objective of this approach is to bring the translator out of the “shadow” of the author, as mentioned by Venuti (2008). In the case of translators about whom little is known - such as Hellerówna - conducting in-depth research in Translation Studies is challenging without first establishing a comprehensive biographical account, and this study seeks to provide it.Helena Helerovna, poljski književni prevodilac iz perioda između dva rata, rođena je u Krakovu 27. februara 1899. godine, a umrla je kao američka državljanka u Njujorku 25. juna 1978. godine, pod imenom Helen Antonija Atlas. Prevodila je, između ostalog, nagrađivana dela (npr. „Fiancée d'Avril“ od Gi Šanteplera ili „Le repos de Bachus“ od Pjera Boaloa) i priznate autore (npr. Andre Moroa, Fransoa Morijak ili Marija Peteani), često potpisujući se kao Hel Hel ili H. H. Njenu karijeru je prekinuo Drugi svetski rat, tokom kojeg je Helerovna postala žrtva Holokausta. Njen doprinos poljskoj prevodilačkoj zajednici je uglavnom zaboravljen, do te mere da čak ni Poljska nacionalna biblioteka nema tačne podatke o njoj. Ovaj rad predstavlja preliminarnu studiju o Heleni Helerovni kao prevodiocu, sa ciljem rekonstrukcije njene biografije i sastavljanja kompletnog spiska njenih prevoda, kako bi se olakšalo dalje istraživanje njenih dela u okviru studija prevoda (Česterman 2009). Cilj ovog pristupa je da se prevodilac izvuče iz „senke“ autora, kao što je pomenuo Venuti (2008). U slučaju prevodilaca o kojima se malo zna - kao što je Helerovna - sprovođenje dubinskog istraživanja u studijama prevoda je izazovno bez prethodnog uspostavljanja sveobuhvatnog biografskog prikaza, a ova studija nastoji da ga pruži
