In five books, "We Survived: Yugoslav Jews on the Holocaust" (three of them translated into English), the testimonies of a small number of surviving members of the Jewish community about World War II were collected. The peculiarity of the circumstances in which the entire population of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was found is reflected in the fact that at the beginning of the war, the country was occupied by five invaders: Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania and the fascist satellite formation, the so-called. The Independent State of Croatia. These circumstances also led to different ways of surviving and rescuing Jews from these areas. The Jewish Historical Museum of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Yugoslavia / Serbia published these books with the help of donations and volunteer work of the editorial board in which seven of nine members survived the Holocaust. These books are an extraordinary collection of tragic and dramatic experiences about unique choices - the struggle for life, dignity, and freedom in partisans; about concentration camps, about refugee life under constant threat, about help and friendships. They are also a good basis for exploring the Holocaust and the history of Jews from the former Yugoslavia. Each testimony is enriched with a series of photographs and together with the text, they make unique documentation material. As the suffering of Jews on the territory of the former Yugoslavia is poorly known to the general public, these books have the task of filling that space. They thus become a memorial for all the victims whose many names are found only in memory. One of those memories is "My memory is the only monument to my family" by Olivera Đurđić

A short, warm, often painful, heartfelt human story from the pen of Dunja Frankental (née Kovačević). Her fate in life, probably unexpectedly, by some fateful threads and connections, brings her to Israel. In that story, which is simple in its title, and seemingly realistically small in scope, the life fate of her family is told, so easily recognizable even in the possible life circumstances of many of us! Whether the family 'circle of life' of the described destinies and events has 'closed' ... or not ... let those who read it judge that, and I believe that even the author herself cannot and will not give a 'final answer' to this

The Independent State of Croatia, founded by the Croatian Revolutionary Movement “Ustasha” (with the support and approval of the Axis powers), came into being without asking its citizens for their consent. Citizens have commented on it in various ways: welcoming it, taking a passive wait-and-see approach, and actively expressing their opposition. Active, armed resistance was the option of an initially small circle that had to be brave enough to face the confrontation with a well-equipped army and the brutal subjugation policy of the Ustaše under the aegis of National Socialist authorities. Citizens submitted to the occupiers and their Croatian collaborators - after all, if they wanted to secure their existence, they had to survive. But there were also fellow citizens who “saw their chances” in this regime, worked together, made careers on the backs of others, offered themselves and accepted the risk of being denounced, being “sounded out” as provocateurs and reporting slander against their fellow human beings to the intelligence services. They had to know that they were risking their “informants” to life and limb. Such services have been despised since immemorial, as the German poet August Heinrich Graf von Fallersleben summed up in the 19th century: “The greatest villain in the entire country is and remains the informer.” Other citizens, however, saw the persecuted and their suffering - they helped those in danger to warn, to hide, to bring them to safety - and to intervene with the authorities on behalf of those at risk (currently 130 Croatian “Righteous Among the Nations”!). The structure of the Independent State of Croatia has already been thoroughly examined both chronologically and functionally. In all studies on the emergence of the Ustasha state, the people were primarily seen as perpetrators: To understand their motives, one can already fall back on studies on the functioning of National Socialism in Germany and the countries occupied by Germans: The German Attorney General Fritz Bauer, himself from regime persecuted and forced to emigrate, studied the regime's actors, the "little followers" and located them in the 200-year-old Prussian tradition - the epitome of soulless, mechanical obedience. The civil service ethos of the Habsburg Monarchy shows structural similarities, and these in turn were transferred to the governance of the monarchy's successor states.Ovaj rad nagrađen je trećom nagradom na 67. nagradnom konkursu Saveza Jevrejskih opština Srbije za 2023. godinu (this work was awarded the third prize at the 67th award competition of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia for 2023)

In the territory of the satellite Nazi creation called the Independent State of Croatia, and since its inception in 1941 up until the very end of the Second World War in 1945, the criminal Ustasha regime had actively, systematically, and brutally committed genocide against Serbs, Roma, and Jews. The mass and planned killing of Jews began soon after the declaration of independence of this puppet, Hitler-controlled state, making the Ustasha regime in Zagreb, the initial actor in implementing “the final solution to the Jewish question” - that is, the biological extermination of Abraham’s children. This occurred even prior to the ideological and political patrons of this goal ultimately declaring it officially at a Nazi leader conference of 1942 in Wannsee. The Holocaust, which was continuously and mercilessly implemented in the territory of the Independent State of Croatia throughout its existence, resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 Yugoslav Jews. Even after a full 75 years since the cessation of the manhunt against and liquidation of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia, and despite persistent and meticulous research by generations of historians, the identities of many victims remain unknown. This paper will present multiple Jewish individuals unidentified until this point who lived to witness the creation of the Independent State of Croatia but whose wartime fate is still undiscovered.Naučni rad "O nekim nepopisanim žrtvama Holokausta sa prostora NDH" objavljen je u "Topola: časopis JU Spomen-područja Donja Gradina", 2022 godine (vol. 8, br. 8, str. 80-108) (the scientific paper "On several undocumented victims of the Holocaust the Independent State of Croatia" was published in "Topola: Journal of the Donja Gradina Memorial Area", 2022 (vol. 8, no. 8, pp. 80-108); link [https://jevrejskadigitalnabiblioteka.rs/handle/123456789/2191

Anti-Semitic phenomena and processes in the Vardar part of Macedonia, Macedonia within the Yugoslav Federation and the Republic of Macedonia (1919-2018)

Anti-Semitism is a system of prejudice or hatred against Jews. It is a process that manages to be gradually modified and adapted to different forms of governance. Basically, there are three manifestations of anti-Semitism: pagan, Christian, and modern. Pagan anti-Semitism is based on the religious diversity of Jews from other nations. Christian anti-Semitism is fueled by the slander that Jews used the blood of Christian children for ritual purposes, that is, that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus Christ. While, unlike the previous ones, modern anti-Semitism is based on racial premises, which arises as a consequence of national feelings, since Jews are a group of people, which differs from other peoples in terms of culture, language, and religion. That is, according to modern anti-Semitism, Jews are considered an inferior race because of the alleged blood characteristics in their genes. It is precisely such differences that have contributed to the creation of stereotypes of Jews as very rich people, who rule commerce and control the world through finance, who control the Hollywood film industry and the world's media. And that's exactly why anti-Semitism is a phenomenon that successfully adapts to time and space. In Macedonian historiography, anti-Semitism, as a phenomenon, is investigated sporadically, mostly in a few monographs dealing with the life of Jews in Macedonia. On this issue, there is an extremely significant collection of video material in the holdings of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, which is dominated by testimonies related to the fear that existed among the interviewees due to the narrative that Jews used the blood of Christian children for ritual purposes. What is present in the testimonies is also observed in the work of Jennie Lebl "Tide and Crash". In Macedonian society, it is constantly claimed that it is immune to anti-Semitism, however, beneath the surface, there were and still are numerous anti-Semitic phenomena and processes.

Relation to the past and the history of the Holocaust - Staro sajmiste

Rad pruža detalјan pregled knjige Jovana Bajforda "Staro sajmište, mesto sećanja, zaborava i sporenja", koja se bavi istorijom Starog sajmišta od njegovog početka pa do danas. In this paper, we will deal with the place Staro sajmište, which during the Second World War got a new purpose and became a Jewish camp. Аs well as with the relationship of society and the government towards this place, which during its history became an instrument of selective memory, and least of all the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The paper provides a detailed review of Jovan Byford's book "Staro Sajmiste: A site remembered, forgotten, contested", which deals with the history of the Staro sajmiste from its beginning to the present day. By analyzing the film "Kad svane dan", we will look back at the story of an individual whose parents were victims of the Holocaust and see that the place of suffering has not been adequately marked to this day, as well as that there is little interest in the victims.Zbornik je rezultat istraživanja u okviru Studija Holokausta koje se pod pokrovitelјstvom Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany) izvode na Univerzitetu u Kragujevcu. The collection of papers is the result of research within Holocaust Studies, which are conducted at the University of Kragujevac under the support of the Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany)

U posljednjih nekoliko mjeseci imali smo priliku sudjelovati na čak dvije dodjele titule pravednika među narodima u Hrvatskoj, štoviše, u Slavoniji. U petom mjesecu 2022. Titulu je ponio Stjepan Kirhofer, a u prvom mjesecu 2023. Kamilo Firinger. Zbog toga, temat ovog broja vezan je uz koncept pravednika - ali i pojedinačne pravednike, o čemu pišu judaistica Catherine Szkop i prof. dr. sc. Zlata Živaković-Kerže. U potrazi za sećanjem: Jasenovac na filmu (1946-2023)

    No full text
This study, at the intersection of film and screen media studies and memory studies, has three aims: (1) to outline the history of films about Jasenovac in the former SFRY and contemporary Serbia; (2) to analyse these films as expressions of diverse forms of memory - historical, multidirectional, cosmopolitan, and traumatic; and (3) to examine how they reflect Jasenovac’s shifting place in collective memory and national discourse - from marginalisation in the SFRY to prominence during Yugoslavia’s disintegration and the rise of post-Yugoslav nation-states. In contemporary Serbia, films about Jasenovac, the Holocaust, and related events are often shaped by current political agendas, exposing the tension between ethnicisation and de-ethnicisation of memory, the construction of national identity, the rewriting of history around sacrificial narratives, and the portrayal of the national past as both pan-European and cosmopolitan.
