As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on December 1, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Saša Brajović, art historian, full professor at the Department of Art History of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Belgrade. The lecture was about the life and artistic work of Lujo Davič. Lujo Davičo (1908-1942) was a ballet dancer, choreographer and pedagogue, anti-fascist and participant in the National Liberation Movement. His name is well known in the cultural life of Belgrade. The first and most important ballet school founded in Yugoslavia in 1948 has been named after Lujo Davičo since 1960. But his personality, life and death were unknown and not the subject of research attention. Unlike the abundance of information that can be obtained about the "Lujo Davičo" school, those about Lujo Davičo's personality are reduced to a few sentences. The scientific monograph "Lujo Davičo: fragments of life" by Saša Brajović, published by "Clio" in 2019, changed that.Predavanje održano 1. decembra 2023. godine preko Zoom platforme (Zoom Šabat) sa početkom u 19.30 časova. The lecture was held on December 1, 2023, via the Zoom platform (Zoom Shabbat) starting at 7:30 p.mTrajanje 46:05 minuta (duration 46:05 minutes).YouTube link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8GrgUWimr0

Ovi tekstovi, bogati fotografijama, odlično ilustriraju dva različita svijeta - europski i azijski, poljski i indijski - nastavljajući time temu o sinagogama. Ne samo Poljska i Indija - već i hrvatski gradovi - nekad su imali mnogo veće židovske zajednice nego sad…The Voice of B’nai B’rith was started in 2016 as a digital magazine focusing on Jewish culture, civilization, history, as well as the activities of Jewish communities and individuals and the B’nai B’rith association in Croatia. The magazine is published four times a year in bilingual format, in Croatian and English, and all issues are online available. The main objective is to point out the contribution of Judaism in the development of Croatian and European culture and civilization, to connect the Jewish and general public, as well as to ensure the continuity of communication between Jewish communities in Croatia and abroad. Today’s contributors include scholars from areas of Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, historians, art theorists and experts in various fields from Croatia, Austria, India, Israel, America, Poland, Brazil and other countries. Catherine Szkop and Deborah Samuel take us to Poland and India with their texts that testify that Jewish identity is tied to synagogues as places of prayer - but there is also a larger aspect of Jewish identity that goes beyond a concrete space. Catherine Szkop provides an excellent overview of Krakow’s synagogues, a kind of guide for anyone who happens to be in the city - and Deborah Samuel takes us even to distant India, where once numerous Jewish communities left behind many significant traces. These texts, rich in photographs, perfectly illustrate two different worlds - European and Asian, Polish and Indian - thus continuing the theme of synagogues. As for the local link to the topic, Tomislav Vuković and Lavoslav Špicer write about the synagogues in Đakovo and Slavonski brod, reminding us of the times when these cities had strong and large Jewish communities. Not only Poland and India - but also Croatian cities - once had much larger Jewish communities than now...Časopis "Glasnik B'nai B'rith", Hrvatska dostupan je na Internet stranici [https://www.bnaibrith.hr/ hr/].The Magazine "The Voice of B’nai B’rith", Croatia is available on the website [https://www.bnaibrith.hr/ hr/].Tema broja: Sinagoge i identiteti (the theme of this issue: Synagogues and identities)

U Derventi kupuju jeftino građevinsko zemljište, za ono vrijeme grade moderne stambene kuće, otvaraju trgovačke i zanatske radnje, a naposljetku postaju i osnivači industrijskih preduzeća, doprinoseći privrednom razvitku Dervente. It is known that Jews, after the persecution from Spain by the Catholic Inquisition, began to immigrate to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 16th century. After their expulsion, they became better known under the name Sephardi, which in Hebrew means Western Land, but they mostly came to Bosnia and Herzegovina from Spain. The Ottoman Empire was kind to the Jews when practising their faith and traditions, but they were forbidden to own weapons and buy agricultural land. These two prohibitions were not a problem for them because otherwise, they were excellent merchants and good craftsmen. Implementing reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina gradually introduced equality in all segments of the life of the inhabitants, including the Jews. They had complete property and personal protection like all residents of Derventa. Living mixed with the rest of the city's population, their neighbours defended them from the attacks of individuals who wanted to harm them in any form. They themselves did not want to deviate from the environment in which they lived by accepting the customs and language of the domicile population. In Derventa, they buy cheap construction land, during that time they build modern residential houses, open trade and craft shops, and finally become founders of industrial companies, contributing to the economic development of Derventa. On the www.geni.com website, Mr Emil Eskenazy Lewinger entered data by first and last names and family relationships of Jewish families. Searching for the oldest immigrant families of Jews in Derventa, we find information that a Pesach David had four sons: Joseph, Judah Leon, David and Levi

Sephardic melody as the basis for one Bosnian Sevdalinka

    Get PDF
The origin of the melody of probably the most famous and most performed sevdalinka from Sarajevo, "Kad ja pođoh na Bentbašu", has captured the attention of researchers, writers, folklorists, and enthusiasts of traditional folk music. It is fascinating to trace the journey of this popular melody as it travelled its thorny path from one end of Europe to the other, becoming a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina's secular and spiritual Islamic musical tradition. The Spanish Inquisition, led by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain, pursued a policy of blood purity intending to convert the descendants of Jews and Muslims to the Catholic faith. The Muslims of Andalusia were forcibly converted, killed, or expelled to Morocco, and they were ultimately exterminated in 1492. The same tragic fate happened to the Spanish Jews that year, and the Portuguese Jews two years later. The destruction of Spain's multicultural society was a crucial event for the Jews, who, at the invitation of the Turkish Sultan Bayezid II, found refuge in the Ottoman Empire. The Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, known as Sephardim, brought their Ladino language to their new homeland, along with their culture, customs, and music. Personalization of the victim as a didactic strategy of Holocaust education

Rad takođe tematizuje i pojam preživele žrtve. Nјih valјa staviti u istorijski kontekst Drugog svetskog rata, uz korišćenje istoriografskih podataka i uvida istorijske nauke. The paper deals with an important aspect of the pedagogical philosophy of the International School for Holocaust Studies ‘Yad Vashem’: placing the individual at the center of the comprehension of history. We do not speak of victims in terms of numbers but give them names and faces, read the letters from the concentration camps, the diaries, and authentic testimonies, and learn about the victims as human beings. This path differs from the previous approach to teaching, which was mainly limited to the chronology of historical, political, and military events, interspersed with occasional descriptions and brief explanations of the phenomena of mass murders and Nazi policies, accompanied by death statistics. This approach is fundamentally opposed to presenting numbers exclusively and to reducing victims to statistical data. Numbers alone cannot foster identification or empathy, which is essential when it comes to learning about the Holocaust: the educational goals in this regard can only be achieved through connecting cognitive and emotional levels of learning. The paper emphasizes the importance of reconstructing the identities, faces, and lives of the victims, which is in direct contrast to the Nazi perception of Jews, where the victim was depersonalized, dehumanized, incinerated, missing, and forgotten. It also highlights the significance of the concept of survivor victims because without the testimonies of the survivors, teaching about the Holocaust would expose students to nothing but tragedy and death. However, personal stories, portraits, and memories are just the necessary first step in the process of learning and it is not sufficient to rely solely on them. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of combining facts and data with personal stories, which, with the help of historiographical information and insights from historical science, are placed in the context of World War II. Finally, attention is drawn to the Holocaust victims belonging to other suffering groups, which also helps understand the full scope of the tragedy of World War II, as well as the dangers threatening our present and the future. Učiti o Holokaustu no preporukama Jad Vašema" (Beograd: Grupa 484, 2019) čije objavlјivanje je pomogao „Jad Vašem“ (the text was prepared based on Nada Banjanin Đuričić's publication "This what you do is important. Learning about the Holocaust with the recommendations of Yad Vashem" (Belgrade: Grupa 484, 2019), whose publication was helped by "Jad Vashem"

In five books, "We Survived: Yugoslav Jews on the Holocaust" (three of them translated into English), the testimonies of a small number of surviving members of the Jewish community about World War II were collected. The peculiarity of the circumstances in which the entire population of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was found is reflected in the fact that at the beginning of the war, the country was occupied by five invaders: Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania and the fascist satellite formation, the so-called. The Independent State of Croatia. These circumstances also led to different ways of surviving and rescuing Jews from these areas. The Jewish Historical Museum of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Yugoslavia / Serbia published these books with the help of donations and volunteer work of the editorial board in which seven of nine members survived the Holocaust. These books are an extraordinary collection of tragic and dramatic experiences about unique choices - the struggle for life, dignity, and freedom in partisans; about concentration camps, about refugee life under constant threat, about help and friendships. They are also a good basis for exploring the Holocaust and the history of Jews from the former Yugoslavia. Each testimony is enriched with a series of photographs and together with the text, they make unique documentation material. As the suffering of Jews on the territory of the former Yugoslavia is poorly known to the general public, these books have the task of filling that space. They thus become a memorial for all the victims whose many names are found only in memory. One of those memories is "Thank you to the German woman Hilda Miller" by Vera Štajn

The tragedy of the Jewish people of Donja Dubrava

U svoje osobno ime, u ime Židovske općine Čakovec te u ime cjelokupne židovske zajednice zahvaljujem Slavenu i Janji na zapisu koji će otrgnuti zaboravu židovsku zajednicu Donje Dubrave" (Andrej Pal predsjednik Židovske općine Čakovec)."I feel great happiness and satisfaction because of the existence of people who enthusiastically research and follow the history of their region. As the president of the Jewish Community of Čakovec, I am especially happy and grateful that Mr Slaven Ujlaki together with Mrs Janja Kovač showed an interest in researching the small Jewish community in Donja Dubrava. The Jews left an indelible mark in Donja Dubrava, and their memory is still alive in the entire Međimurje area. The residential buildings they used are still there, and I hope they will not be devastated during the inevitable restoration when their authenticity would be lost. Despite our desire and effort, on this occasion, we failed to set up a stumbling block, which is certainly deserved by all those who lived in Donja Dubrava and left behind an indelible mark, and whose lives were cruelly cut off. I hope we will have the opportunity to correct that injustice and in this way, at least symbolically, return the Jews killed in the Nazi camps to their hearths. There is certainly much more to be explored and I hope that researchers of the younger generations will be able to keep up their enthusiasm and continue this invaluable research work. On my own behalf, on behalf of the Jewish Comunity of Čakovec and on behalf of the entire Jewish community, I thank Slaven and Janja for the record that will tear the Jewish community of Donje Dubrava from oblivion" (Andrej Pal, President of the Jewish Community of Čakovec)
