Mazal Tov: Jewish weddings in Macedonia between the two world wars through old photos, documents and objects
The exhibition "Mazal Tov", translated from the Hebrew "Good luck", is conceived in several layers because it consists of photographs, documents and objects as integral parts of the wedding ceremony. The exhibition contains 15 exhibition panels that present photos of family wedding ceremonies of Jews from Macedonia who lived between the two world wars. In addition to photographs, original documents proving the specificity of the wedding ceremony, such as the original exhibit "Ketub", i.e. the Marriage Contract, which is an integral part of the wedding ceremony and the life of the newlyweds, are on display. The exhibition is enriched by the wedding coffin, such as the dowry that the bride brings to her new home. Additional exhibits are old suitcases that symbolically show the bride's broken relationship with her birthplace. At the same time, the suitcases announce the last journey of the Jews who were forcibly torn from these areas. Life and survival over the centuries in these areas were packed into these suitcases, and cultural identity was stifled. Here we present the catalogue from that exhibition

Canaan - Eretz Israel - Judea - Palestine - Israel
This book chronologically follows the history of the geographical area of today's Israel and Palestine, with special reference to the names by which that area was called and named over a period of 4 thousand years. Those names were determined both geographically and religiously, but also by the political-historical circumstances of that time: Promised Land - Canaan - Eretz Israel - Judea - Holy Land - Palestine - Zion - Israel. In the first part of the book, brief and interesting historical data are presented, as well as the sources and origins of each of the names that were used to define and name this area at that time. But the largest part of the book is devoted to the period when it was called Palestine. What is especially rich in that part of the book is a large number of interesting and lesser-known information, data and facts that tell us about the extraordinary connection and connection between Jews and Palestine, both in the physical sense of life, and in the language-linguistic sense, when since 9 century, and especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, that is, long before the restoration of the state of Israel in 1948, that term and the name 'Palestine' was an integral part and determinant of about 70 Jewish economic, social, cultural, banking, newspaper and numerous other institutions, organizations and associations. Through the rich history of their creation and the presented extremely interesting data about each of them, the reader follows the history of the struggle and commitment of the Jews to rebuild their national and political identity and home in their (ancestral) homeland Palestine / Eretz Israel /. With short but richly informative texts, this is also a story about the history of the creation of Israel. More of the interesting information presented in the book tells us about the presence and connection of Jews from the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia in Palestine and gives a lot of information about related interesting events before the Second World War. Special mention was also made of the planting of forests in Palestine in memory of King Peter I Karađorđević and King Aleksandar I Karađorđević. In a special chapter of the book, intriguing interesting thoughts, observations and data are given about the attitude and commentary of the Arabs themselves regarding the name 'Palestine', as well as their attitude towards that name. In the part of the book entitled - The Holy Land - data and illustrations are given about the religious holy places of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Holy Land and their importance for each of these religions

Kroz život časno i s ljubavlju
In five books, "We Survived: Yugoslav Jews on the Holocaust" (three of them translated into English), the testimonies of a small number of surviving members of the Jewish community about World War II were collected. The peculiarity of the circumstances in which the entire population of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was found is reflected in the fact that at the beginning of the war, the country was occupied by five invaders: Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania and the fascist satellite formation, the so-called. The Independent State of Croatia. These circumstances also led to different ways of surviving and rescuing Jews from these areas. The Jewish Historical Museum of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Yugoslavia / Serbia published these books with the help of donations and volunteer work of the editorial board in which seven of nine members survived the Holocaust. These books are an extraordinary collection of tragic and dramatic experiences about unique choices - the struggle for life, dignity, and freedom in partisans; about concentration camps, about refugee life under constant threat, about help and friendships. They are also a good basis for exploring the Holocaust and the history of Jews from the former Yugoslavia. Each testimony is enriched with a series of photographs and together with the text, they make unique documentation material. As the suffering of Jews on the territory of the former Yugoslavia is poorly known to the general public, these books have the task of filling that space. They thus become a memorial for all the victims whose many names are found only in memory. One of those memories is "Through life - honestly and lovingly" by Jaša Romano

The Voice of B’nai B’rith "Gavro Schwartz": Magazine of Jewish Culture, Civilization and History, no. 31, July 2023
The new issue of “The Voice” has a theme that is somewhat philosophical, and somewhat pragmatic. The original intention was to make a topic about Jewish humanitarians. We know that there are many, so the final decision was to focus on just some of them and include considerations on the topic of humanitarianism. The text by regular contributor Catherine Szkop talks about Henryk Goldszmit, the head of the Warsaw orphanage who ended up in Treblinka together with the children he cared
for; followed by an interview with American lawyer Stephen Stern on the topic of social activism
and “tikkun olam” as a principle of life. Dr. Zlata Živaković-Kerže writes about Jewish benefactors in Osijek during World War I. We also present current events in the Jewish Communities Osijek and Zagreb, a critical review of the commemoration in Jasenovac, and a text about the benefactor Nicolas Winton who
saved children during the Holocaust. In the final column, we present a collection of essays by the Jewish actress Mira Furlan, a noteworthy book that was overshadowed by her autobiography in the public eye.Tema broja: Spasiti život - ili spasiti svijet? On the trace of a "forbidden" book and a "public" photograph - the case of Demajo: lecture
As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on December 22, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Biljana Albahari, librarian advisor in the National Library of Serbia. The lecture refers to the collection of books in the fond of National Library of Serbia, which was donated by Samuilo Demajo in May 1941 and which, according to the Nazi decrees of that time, the library was not allowed to receive. Through the correspondence of the prewar director of the National Library with the occupation authorities, we can follow how the books were kept in the library. The presentation also deals with the photograph's origin from 1940, when Samuilo Demajo and his family were photographed in front of the German Pavilion at the Belgrade Fair. This photo is in the public domain and can be freely downloaded from the Internet, educators and even historians often use it. However, formal bibliographic data about the source or collection in which the photograph is located does not exist.Predavanje održano 22. decembra 2023. godine preko Zoom platforme (Zoom Šabat) sa početkom u 19.30 časova. The lecture was held on December 22, 2023, via the Zoom platform (Zoom Shabbat) starting at 7:30 p.m.Trajanje 00:59:03 minuta (duration 00:59:03 minutes).YouTube link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkwgpOfHPmw&feature=youtu.be
Parents' confrontation (or not) with the Nazi past in the novel “In my brother's shadow” by Uwe Timm
In this paper, we will deal with the issue of guilt and dealing with it. The subject of research is the novel "In my brother's shadow" by Uwe Timm, more precisely the relationship of the parents' generation towards the period of the Nazi rule and the crimes committed in the name of the Nazi ideology. The writer is at the same time the narrator of his life story. It is not about fictitious characters, but the situation that is described in Timm's family as a criticism of the (in) action of his loved ones at the time. The novel was written in 2003, after the death of the writer's parents and sister, whom the parents classified as „the one who came after” (Timm 2012: 8). This term refers to the generation that was born during and after the end of World War II and that found itself faced with the guilt of its elders. Using the analysis method, we found parts of the text that point to the attitude of the parents and the existence or non-existence of guilt, as well as justifications that were used as a shield from facing the truth.Zbornik je rezultat istraživanja u okviru Studija Holokausta koje se pod pokrovitelјstvom Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany) izvode na Univerzitetu u Kragujevcu. The collection of papers is the result of research within Holocaust Studies, which are conducted at the University of Kragujevac under the support of the Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany)
Jews and Christianity - between Catechism and older brothers
As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on September 29, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Aron Albahari. The topic of the lecture was "Jews and Christianity - Between Catechism and older brothers". The author gave two extremely different views and representations of Jews. One given in the Catechism, the second most important theological book of Christianity (both Catholic and Orthodox) where they are presented as " Godslayers". The second is the speech of Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Great Central Synagogue in Rome, where he called the Jews "elder brothers". In the second part, the author follows the history of the origin of Christianity from the Jewish corpus and heritage, through the accounts of those figures of early Christianity who were responsible for the spread of Christianity, and who were Jews - Jesus (Joshua), John (Johanan) the Baptist, Saint Peter (Shimon ben Jonah), Saint Paul (Saul), Twelve Apostles, 72 Little Apostles, Evangelists John (Johanan), Matthew (Matthias) and Mark (Markus), 15 first Jerusalem bishops (bishops), 7 first Jerusalem deacons, 4 Roman popes - Peter (Shimon), Clement I of Rome, Evarist and Anacletus II Pietro (Peter) Pierleoni.Predavanje održano 29. septembra 2023. godine preko Zoom platforme (Zoom Šabat) sa početkom u 19.30 časova (the lecture was held on September 29, 2023, via the Zoom platform (Zoom Shabbat) starting at 7:30 p.m.).Trajanje 01:42:37 minuta (duration 01:42:37 minutes).YouTube link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrJBBxARUQQ]
