Nandor Glid: 100 years since his birth

    No full text
The sculptor Nandor Glid was born on December 12, 1924, in Subotica in a Jewish family. Warmth of the family home was given by his mother, Ema, whilst his father, Armin, owned a general store, and when this business failed, he opened a kosher butcher shop. In addition to a public school, Nandor attended the Jewish religious school, too. Bad grades due to poor knowledge of the German language in the Jewish school and the Serbian in the state school and the introduction of numerus clausus, the regulation restricting enrollment of the Jewish students in schools and universities, had an impact on him, causing him to leave the high school after the third year. Father sent him to learn the stonemasonry craft in 1940.Izložba "Nandor Glid - 100 godina od rođenja" omaž je jednom od najistaknutijih jugoslovenskih vajara druge polovine 20. veka i dugogodišnjem prijatelju i saradniku Jevrejskog istorijskog muzeja. Sva izložena dela, 5 vajarskih radova i 12 grafika, su iz Likovne zbirke Jevrejskog istorijskog muzeja. (The exhibition „Nandor Glid - 100 years since his birth“ is an homage to one of the most prominent Yugoslav sculptors of the second half of the 20th century and the long-standing friend and collaborator of the Jewish Historical Museum. In this paper, the general recommendations for learning and teaching about the Holocaust from the world's leading educational and research institutions are placed in the context of college teaching of Holocaust literature. By analyzing the experiences of university teachers and significant didactic, pedagogic, and literary theoretical studies, the challenges and specific requirements of applying general recommendations to teaching Holocaust literature are presented. The focus of the paper is on the groups of recommendations that deal with the importance of acquiring knowledge about history, precision in expression, and the emotional aspect of dealing with the Holocaust, because they are closely related to the most challenging aspects of teaching Holocaust literature, namely the relationship between history, historiography, and literature; the phenomenon of Holocaust ineffability; and the emotional reaction to reading Holocaust literature. These recommendations and the challenges related to them are critically analyzed in three separate chapters, and solutions for teaching practice are proposed for each. An overview of contemporary university teaching of Holocaust literature in Serbia is also given, and possible development tendencies are considered.Biblioteka Posebna izdanja.

Propaganda against Jews and anti-Masonic exhibition in Belgrade

    No full text
Tema rada je propagandno delovanje Antimasonske izložbe i kolaboracionističkih vlasti u okupiranoj Srbiji u vreme organizovanja izložbe. The paper discusses the propaganda activities of the Anti-Masonic Exhibition and the collaborationist authorities in occupied Serbia during the organisation of the exhibition. Based on a secondary analysis of the literature, the introduction was developed in the context of Nazi propaganda. The second part of the paper examines the propaganda efforts of the collaborationist government in occupied Serbia and the initial stages of organising the Anti-Masonic Exhibition. The collaborationists disseminated propaganda initiatives similar to those of Nazi Germany. Through print media, radio, films, pseudo-scientific publications, book publishing, and organizing exhibitions, they aimed to promote Nazi ideas and "justify" cooperation with the occupier. This exhibition, which consists of various sections primarily focusing on anti-Jewish, anti-Masonic, and anti-communist themes, represents the largest propaganda project in occupied Serbia. Its goal was to dehumanise members of the Jewish community, Freemasons, and Communists, emphasising their supposed connections and coordinated actions.Biblioteka Posebna izdanja

Bohorete. History of Sephardic women in Bosnia and Herzegovina

    No full text
I want to describe the Sephardic woman, the one from a bygone era, unknown, and unappreciated for her merits. We will speak, talk about her, and describe her to the woman of our time,” said Laura Papo, known as Bohoreta, in the introduction to her work On the Sephardic Woman in Bosnia. In the introduction to her manuscript, Bohoreta writes, “When a traveler visits Bosnia, he marvels at our picturesque land full of beautiful colors, costumes, and garments, fezzes, and turbans. Among them, he also sees the tukada (a women’s cap) shaped like a ship... which is rare today and will soon disappear... The foreigner does not suspect or realize that these women, dressed in this manner, are the daughters of that branch of Israel, the Spanish Jews, victims of Tomás de Torquemada and the darkness of the Middle Ages.” Where should the story of this daughter begin? Perhaps the best place to start is from birth. In Judaism, women traditionally hold a sacred role - they give birth to children, manage the household, and take on the responsibility of Jewish upbringing for their children. A woman passes on Jewish values. It is because of the mother’s Jewish religion (not the father’s) that a child is born Jewish.Tekst na srpskom i engleskom jeziku (text in Serbian and English)

The poetics of "subsequent memory" in Judita Šalgo’s novel "Trag kočenja"

    No full text
The paper presents the interpretation of Judita Šalgo’s novel "Trag kočenja" [Skid Marks] (1987) from the perspective of Holocaust literature studies. Interpretively, the author’s idea of "subsequent memory" is privileged, which is explained in its closeness to the concepts of "post-memory" by M. Hirsch and "traumatic realism" by M. Rothberg. The formal procedures that build the poetics of "subsequent memory" are marked and interpreted as a representational complex of "mimetism of desire". The research goals include a more comprehensive shed light on the poetics of Judith Šalgo, especially the novel Trag kočenja, the text currently marginalised in terms of reception. Neglecting the contextualisation of the novel "Trag kočenja" in the literature of the postgeneration undoubtedly reduces the meaning-symbolic potential of this text. At the same time, disregarding novels has reduced the literary and historiographic reviews of both the literature on the Holocaust in Serbian culture and the postmodernist repertoire, especially their connection, which the paper draws attention to by referring to the poetic closeness of the texts of Judita Šalgo and Danilo Kiš.Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

    Pank, Holokaust i Ramonsi

    No full text
This paper examines the intersection of the Holocaust and the Ramones as the first U.S. punk rock band. Firstly, the paper elaborates on punk as a genre of music that emerged virtually at the same time in England and the United States as a reaction to the post-war socio-political climate. The paper then focuses on a group of young men who all grew up in New York City and whose music spoke directly to the disillusioned American post-war youth culture - the Ramones. The Ramones were all either Jews or had parents who had survived the Holocaust. Thus, the paper examines the extent to which the Ramones were affected by the trauma of the Holocaust and how they tried to work through it. ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ and ‘Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World’, both tracks on their self-titled album released in 1976, are thoroughly discussed.Predmet interesovanja rada jesu Holokaust i posleratno stvaralaštvo američkog pank rok benda Ramonsi. Istraživački korpus predstavlјaju pesme „Blitzkrieg Bop” i „Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World”.Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

Sporna sećanja na Holokaust u postkomunističkoj Evropi

    No full text
This paper explores the ways in which the memory of the Holocaust in post-communist Europe has become appropriated to represent other types of historical crimes. I demonstrate how the familiar narratives and images of the Holocaust have been appropriated for three major purposes: to promote narratives of competitive victimisation, to criminalise communism, and to advance myths of European unity. I illustrate these arguments with brief examples of contested commemorative practices of the Holocaust in Poland, Lithuania, and the House of European History in Brussels. The analysis shows that the continuing contestation about the Holocaust has produced many opportunities for Holocaust instrumentalization, which has serious political consequences in the present. Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

Jewish digital library: importance and role

Digitalno okruženje, novi mediji i društvene mreže taj su proces veoma ubrzali, obogatili i omogućili da se podaci i informacije cilјano sakuplјaju, arhiviraju, efikasno diseminiraju i postanu vidlјive i dostupne širom sveta. The most modern methods employed to preserve the memory of the Holocaust at the Yad Vashem Memorial Centre imply that research is not confined solely to the duration of the Holocaust but extends to everything that preceded it in historical, cultural, and ideological contexts, as well as anything representing its consequences. The digital environment, new media, and social networks have accelerated this process, enriching and enabling targeted collection, archival, and effective dissemination of data and information worldwide. Thus, the Jewish digital library was founded and has been developing ever since. The activities of collecting, unifying, digitizing, presenting, affirming, and preserving Jewish cultural, religious, and secular heritage commenced at the end of 2019, when its repository was established on the platform of the Computer Centre of the University of Belgrade. The motivation for establishing this repository lies in the fact that during the Holocaust, local Jewish communities were almost annihilated, and the tragedy of Yugoslav Jews remained largely unknown. By establishing this uniquely organized and comprehensive online repository, the Jewish Digital Library facilitates the better availability and visibility of scientific and professional literature connected to Jewish heritage, especially regarding the Holocaust in Serbia and ex-Yugoslavia. Više od šezdeset škola iz petnaest zemalja prihvatilo je izazov da osmisle jedinstveni projekat koji spaja istorijsko istraživanje i kreativne aktivnosti, te da rezultate svog rada i stečena znanja podele sa širom zajednicom.“Pančevo - City of Remembrance” is a film created by the students of class VII-3 from “Miroslav Antić Mika” Primary School, along with their mentor teachers Dragana Jovanović, Zorana Lepedat, and Dragomir Burnać. The film explores sites of suffering of Jews, Serbs, and Roma during World War II in Pančevo. It was presented during the second plenary session of IHRA, held from December 2 to 5, 2024, in London, United Kingdom. During the session, projects from several schools in IHRA member states that investigated the Holocaust within their local communities were showcased. This initiative was part of the “My Hometown” project. It bridges the past with the present and enables students to see their town from a new perspective as they uncover local connections to this unprecedented history. Jewish concentration camps in Đakovo and Tenja [Preface and Introduction]

    No full text
To nije slabost, nego jakost i zalog boljoj budućnosti. Duhovno smo svi semiti“ (papa Pio XI).Through the camps of Đakovo and Tenja, this book seeks to depict a totalitarian regime that, in the name of the country and racial ideology, committed horrible crimes against the Jewish people. Racism is the essence of anti-Semitism. Regretfully, it took the Church nearly two millennia to declare, "We are the spiritual descendants of Abraham through Christ and in Christ." Anti-Semitism is not acceptable. We are all Semites spiritually (Pope Pius XI).Biblioteka Diacovensia. Studije ; 45
