Israelophobia: the latest version of one of the oldest hatreds and what to do about it [author Jake Wallis Simmons, published by Constable, Great Britain, 2023]

This is an important and necessary book, written by an excellent and subtle writer. No one is more qualified to write a book like this than Jake Wallis Simmons. He was an editor and correspondent for the Jewish Chronicle, reporting on security issues. The book analyzes topics that are often the subject of prejudice and intense analysis of Israel, which very often turns into obsession and pure demonization. It traces the origins of that phenomenon from medieval European anti-Semitism and Stalinism to the present day. It discusses the reason for the different judgments of this nation, which are so different when it comes to others, and all in supposedly reasonable and progressive times. In a way, this book is a companion to David Baddiel's book "Jews Don't Count". Fascinatingly, it analyzes the dark sides of today's world - political, national, cultural, and digital - and exposes unpleasant truths

O poseti predsednika egzekutive Svetske cionističke organizacije gospodina Nahuma Sokolova Kraljevini S.H.S. u mesecu martu 1928. godine pisale su brojne lokalne i jevrejske novine. Tom prilikom on je posetio Beograd 9. marta, Sarajevo 14. marta, i Zagreb 18. marta 1928. godine. Od voza do čekaonice priredila je oduševljena omladina gostima špalir“.About the visit of the executive president of the World Zionist Organization, Mr. Nahum Sokolov, to the Kingdom of S.H.S. in March 1928, numerous local and Jewish newspapers wrote. At the railway station, the prominent guest was welcomed by a large crowd of Zagreb's Jewish and non-Jewish citizens who eagerly awaited the arrival of the Zionist Jewish national leader. Delegates from all Jewish societies and institutions and many young people stood out among those present. Investigation of family (un)truths: memory, trauma and testimony in the study "My good father: life with his past" by Beate Niman

    No full text
The main purpose of the work is the analytical stratification of the content of the study "My good father: life with his past" by Beate Nieman. The author of the study is the daughter of Bruno Sattler, head of the Gestapo and a criminal of the Second World War, who, in addition to numerous atrocities, led the operation of killing women and children in the dušegupka’s in Belgrade (1942-1944). Noticing gaps and illogicalities in her memories, the author begins the process of researching her father with the intention of writing his biography. Beata’s narrative confronts the past with the present, as well as the family’s created past with the potential family legacy. In addition, dealing with history, facts, evidence, the father becomes the subject of his daughter’s investigation. Starting with the econstruction of (Beat’s) memories, Bruno Sattler’s past is highlighted first. Insights will be given into the author’s research processes that led to the uncovering of the historical and family truth about Sattler. The research will not be strictly fixed on the character of Bruno Sattler since the narrative as such gives space to research the psychological aspects of the personality of Beate Niemann herself. The work will be focused on the relations of history and the past, the functions of memory, the scope of trauma, aspects of (auto)biography, as insights into the existence of double testimony and double investigative procedure at the level of the narrative.Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

The biography of terror: Ivan Tolj and mass political violence in the NDH (Independent State of Croatia)

    No full text
Fokusom na srednju razinu odlučivanja, ovaj rad analizira međusobne utjecaje i kompleksnost procesa odlučivanja prilikom implementacije genocida i drugih oblika masovnog političkog nasilja u NDH.This paper analyses the evolution and radicalisation of violence in the Independent State of Croatia through the case study of Ivan Tolj, one of the most important organisers of deportations and terror in the Second World War in Croatia. By applying methods, theories, and approaches from perpetrator studies, this paper focuses on the interaction between the situation and dispositional factors in explaining the mobilisation of perpetrators in Croatia. In order to deepen our understanding of the interaction between the perpetrators in different positions of power, we divide perpetrators into three analytical levels: the macro level, which focuses on political elites or the architects of genocide; meso level which focuses on the organisers of genocide; and the micro level, which focuses on individual perpetrators. By focusing on the meso level, this paper will examine mutual influences and complexities of decision-making regarding the deportations of Serbs, Jews and Roma, as well as other forms of political violence against other persecuted groups in the Independent State of Croatia.Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

Life in the "Periodic table" of Primo Levi

    No full text
In the predominantly autobiographical collection of short stories "The Periodic Table", Primo Levi gives a framework for his life starting from the memories of his ancestors and his early youth, which is why the work provides an insight into the formation of the chemist’s character, which will later be decisive for Levi’s survival in the concentration camp. Through the analysis of "The Periodic Table", we will establish elements that are also significant for the interpretation of Levi’s work "If This is a Man", for which "The Periodic Table" can be a kind of introduction, even though it was written much later. In the short stories, the chemist’s way of thinking stands out, for whom chemistry is a connection with life. Through the analysis, we also get an answer to why Levi essentially remained a chemist and when he became a famous writer, which is inextricably linked to the events during his stay in the camp. The results we arrive at reveal to us what image of himself Levi needed to leave behind, in which his literature played a major role.Tema broja: "Holokaust: nove perspektive, nova saznanja, novi izazovi" (topic of the issue: "Holocaust: new perspectives, new knowledge, new challenges")

Belgrade and the criminal father in "My good father: life with his past" by Beate Niman

    No full text
Primarily, the work intends to provide an insight into the content of the study "My Good Father: Life with His Past" by Beate Nieman. Interestingly, the study's author is the daughter of the head of the Gestapo, Bruno Sattler. The daughter re-examines and rewrites her father’s biography, coming to the terrible truths related to the war actions in which he participated. Then, the goal is to focus on the thematization of the Second World War in Yugoslavia, which the author is talking about, with special attention to the events in Belgrade in the period from 1942 to 1944, since in that period the author’s father was in charge for operations where were killed women, children, and men in death trucks - soul-sucking trucks. The goal is to highlight the crimes committed at the Staro sajmište, highlight them, and adequately connect them with historical knowledge. The author’s research on her father’s crimes affects her perception of him as her father, but not running away from the truth, but facing it, Beata Nieman thoroughly explains the events in Belgrade based on numerous documents, references, records, and photographs. Decades after these crimes, the author visits Belgrade in the desire to face history, the truth, and one can say with her father, since she remains in the unfathomable position of a human being to knowingly agree to commit genocide against an innocent people. Being sentimental about what she witnesses, the visit to Belgrade and the experience of meeting the dead represent an impressive section of this study.Zbornik je rezultat istraživanja u okviru Studija Holokausta koje se pod pokrovitelјstvom Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany) izvode na Univerzitetu u Kragujevcu. The collection of papers is the result of research within Holocaust Studies, which are conducted at the University of Kragujevac under the support of the Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany)

Naša namjera nije nabrojati činjenice o njegovom životu, nego se osvrnuti na njegov doprinos našoj današnjoj kulturi - našoj u smislu židovskoj, europskoj, ali i hrvatskoj…Exactly 100 years ago, the Jewish-Habsburg writer, Franz Kafka died of tuberculosis at the age of only 40.
