A novel anatomical locked medial femoral condyle plate: a biomechanical study
Fixation with a distal lateral femoral plate is a standard approach in treating osteoporotic or comminuted supracondylar femur fractures. However, in clinical practice, this method may prove inadequate, necessitating the application of a plate on the medial side of the distal femur. The aim of this study is to perform a biomechanical evaluation of the newly manufactured anatomically locked plate applied to the distal medial femoral condyle. The plate underwent 2 biomechanical tests by simulating an AO/OTA 33A3 type supracondylar fracture model on synthetic femur bones. The samples were divided into three groups. Fracture fixations were carried out on the medial side using the distal femur medial anatomical locking plate (DFMALP) in group A samples, on the lateral side using the distal femur lateral anatomical locking plate in group B samples, and on both sides in group C samples. In the axial compression test, stability was preserved 23% more in group C than in group B. During the cyclic axial compression test, total displacement was 21% less in group C than in group B. Group A was collapsed at early cycle degrees. In our study, it was observed that the application of DFMALP in conjunction with the lateral plate in AO/OTA 33A3 fragmented supracondylar femur fractures significantly enhanced biomechanical fracture stability. This is a Level 2 prospective, randomized controlled study
On Hyperbolic Generalized Woodall Numbers
In this study, we introduce the generalized hyperbolic Woodall numbers. As special cases, we study with hyperbolic Woodall, hyperbolic modified Woodall, hyperbolic Cullen numbers and hyperbolic modified Cullen numbers. We present Binet’s formulas, generating functions and the summation formulas for these numbers. Besides, we give Catalan’s and Cassini’s identities and present matrices related to these sequences.</jats:p
A Qualitative Study on the Tax Amnesty Perception of Income Taxpayers: The Case of Türkiye
Tax amnesty, which is not regulated in the Tax Procedure Law, has been implemented from time to time since 1924. Tax amnesty, which is seen as an urgent source of income for governments, can have positive or negative consequences for taxpayers. It is understood from the literature that the opinions on tax amnesty practices are divided into two as positive and negative and that there is no full consensus on the subject. The study aims to concretize the theory with a qualitative analysis of the participant opinions covering five different types of taxpayers subject to income tax. For this purpose, content analysis was used in the qualitative study and for this analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five groups of taxpayers subject to income tax (commercial, agricultural, self-employment income, real estate capital income, wage earners) and the results were analyzed with the QSR Nvivo program. Although the analysis results do not present surprising results, they concretely reveal the opinions of income taxpayers on tax amnesty through direct quotations. The results showed that tax amnesties frequently implemented by governments cause taxpayers to expect a new amnesty and cause tax compliance to deteriorate, and are perceived as unfair and unjust by taxpayers who fulfill their tax obligations. In this sense, it was revealed from the qualitative analysis results that taxpayer opinions support the negative view in the theory and literature on tax amnesty practices, but they may accept tax amnesty to revive the economy during or after economic, political or financial crises. In addition to contributing to the literature by focusing on taxpayer opinions in order to concretize the views in the theory and literature on tax amnesty, the qualitative study also draws attention to the need for tax policies to be implemented for a more equitable application of tax amnesties perceived as unjust and offers suggestions.</jats:p
EFL Learners' Views About the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Giving Corrective Feedback on Writing
This chapter presents a qualitative study the aim of which is to explore EFL learners' views about the use of artificial intelligence for giving corrective feedback on their written works. Artificial intelligence use was addressed through one of recent and popular chatbots: ChatGPT. The data were gathered through semi-structured and stimulated-recall interviews, also videorecording of the participants' ChatGPT use for writing feedback. In the interviews, the participants reflected on their individualized language studies, and also having practiced the use of artificial intelligence in receiving corrective feedback on their writing assignments via ChatGPT for five weeks, they expressed their thoughts about this experience. The findings indicated codes and themes about learner characteristics and preferences, and benefits and pitfalls of artificial intelligence use for corrective feedback, which leads to several language teaching implications specifically concerning writing to be proposed in the chapter.</jats:p

AbstractAimThis study aimed to determine the effects of profession‐related films on the professional pride of nursing students.DesignsThe study was conducted with a randomised controlled experimental design.MethodsThe sample of the study consisted of 102 students enrolled in the first year of the School of Nursing, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University in Türkiye in the 2022–2023 academic year. These students were randomly assigned to the experimental (n = 57) and control (n = 45) groups. The experimental group watched two documentaries and a film on YouTube with a one‐week break. Self‐administered online questionnaires were distributed via WhatsApp groups for pretests and posttests. Data were collected with a “Sociodemographic Data Form” and the “Nursing Professional Pride Scale (NPPS)” included in the questionnaire forms prepared on the Google Forms platform. Data were analysed using Spearman's rho, the Mann–Whitney U Test, and the Wilcoxon Signed‐Rank Test.ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 18.80 ± 0.99 years, 80% of the participants were female, the place where 79.4% had lived for the longest duration in their lives was the city, 85.3% had information about the profession of nursing before they started university (36.8% from the internet, 34.6% from people around them). The experimental group had significantly higher NPPS scores than the control group after the intervention (p = 0.017). There was also a significant increase in the dimensions of professional feeling (p = 0.012) and desire to continue the profession in the experimental group (p = 0.002).Patient or Public ContributionPatients and public were not involved in this research.</jats:sec

Evaluation of the antimicrobial and anticancer potential of a modified silver nanoparticle-impregnated carrier system
This study aimed to develop silver nanoparticles embedded in poly(ricinoleic acid)-poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(ethylene glycol) (AgNPsPRici-PMMA-PEG) nanoparticles (NPs) containing caffeic acid (Caff) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) for treating infections and cancer in bone defects. The block copolymers were synthesised via free radical polymerisation. NPs were prepared using the solvent evaporation method and characterised by FTIR, HNMR, SEM, DSC, TGA, and DLS. Drug loading (LE), encapsulation efficiency (EE), antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, and in vitro release studies were conducted. The NPs exhibited a size of 198 ± 2.89 nm, a narrow size distribution (PDI < 0.1), and a zeta potential of −27.5 ± 0.13 mV. The EE of Caff were 73 ± 0.09% w/w and 78 ± 0.32% w/w. Caff NPs showed prolonged release (69 ± 0.23% w/w), cytotoxicity with the cell viability of 66.85 ± 10.51% in SaOS cells, and antimicrobial zones ranging from 1.5 ± 0.3 to 4.2 ± 0.2 mm. TCH-Caff-AgNPsPRici-PMMA-PEG NPs exhibited promising therapeutic potential for infection and cancer treatment in bone defects
Does Prebiotic Food Consumption Reduce Sleep Disorder Symptoms in Children With and Without Asthma? A Case-control Study
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of prebiotic food consumption on sleep disturbance symptoms in children with and without asthma. Method: This is a case-control study. Data were collected from 55 children with asthma and 70 children without asthma, aged 6 to 12 years. Data collection included the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), Prebiotic Food Consumption Frequency Form, and Childhood Asthma Control Test. The asthma control level of children was determined by a pediatrician following the Global Initiative for Asthma's guidelines. Results: The average age of children with asthma was 9.16+-3.11, while for children without asthma, it was 9.39+-3.24. No significant differences were found between children with and without asthma in daytime napping, nighttime awakening, SDSC score, and daily prebiotic food consumption (p>0.05). It was observed that children with asthma used more prebiotic-enriched products than children without asthma (p0.05). Furthermore, no significant relationship was found between the SDSC score and prebiotic food consumption in children with and without asthma (p>0.05). Conclusion: Prebiotic food consumption's role in determining sleep disturbances and asthma control levels in children with asthma remains uncertain. Further research is needed on the use of prebiotics in children with asthma
Metaphor analysis of audio description in English language teaching
This study investigates the use of audio description (AD) and metaphors in enhancing foreign language learning. Data collection involved a convenience sample of 25 students who provided metaphorical descriptions of their AD experiences through a single-item questionnaire. The data analysis employed content analysis to categorize and interpret these metaphors. The findings underscore metaphors' cognitive and emotional benefits in making abstract concepts tangible, thereby enhancing the language learning process. The examination of the metaphors elucidates how students harness metaphorical constructs to explicate various facets of change within their English language learning trajectory. Encouragingly, affirmative responses are discernible within the metaphors, particularly pertaining to themes such as knowledge production, creativity, value, the transmission of knowledge, wisdom, and animacy. The utilization of metaphor, as delineated within this discourse, fosters an ongoing process of scholarly inquiry and comprehension. Future research should continue exploring these tools to further validate and refine their application in diverse educational settings.</jats:p
