Turkish Cross-cultural Adaptation of the Post Hospitalization Behavior Questionnaire for Ambulatory Surgery (PHBQ-AS)
The purpose of this study is to cross-culturally adapt the Post Hospitalization Behavior Questionnaire for Ambulatory Surgery (PHBQ-AS) to Turkish and test its validity and reliability. This is a methodological study. This study was conducted with 121 children aged 1 to 12 years who underwent ambulatory surgery. The data of the study were collected using a Descriptive Information Form, PHBQ-AS, and the Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure. Data analysis and evaluation were performed using factor analysis, Cronbach's α analysis, item-total score correlation analysis, content validity, construct validity, and concurrent validity.PHBQ-AS showed a high level of internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.801). The item-total correlation values of PHBQ-AS were found to be 0.458 to 0.753. PHBQ-AS was determined to be a single-factor scale explaining 66% of the variance in the examined variable. PHBQ-AS and Parents' Postoperative Pain Measure scores were moderately correlated. The Turkish version of PHBQ-AS was highly valid and reliable for the Turkish population. A recommendation for health care professionals in Turkey is to use the PHBQ-AS scale to evaluate posthospitalization behavioral changes in children who are admitted for ambulatory surgery
Effect of Different MMP Inhibitors on the Bond Strength and Durability of an Etch-and-rinse and a Self-etch Adhesive
Aim: To compare the effect of different matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of an etch-and-rinse adhesive and a self-etch adhesive at baseline and after aging. Materials and Method: Flat dentin surfaces were prepared from 96 extracted, sound human molars. Teeth were randomly divided into two main groups according to the adhesives (Adper Single Bond 2, and Clearfil 3S Plus) used (n=48). Each group was divided into four subgroups according to the dentin surface treatments; untreated (control), pretreated with 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) before adhesive application, pretreated with 1% benzalkonium chloride (BAC) before adhesive application, and pretreated with 2% hesperidin (HPN) before adhesive application (n=12). Composite resin was then placed on the prepared surfaces and polymerized. The specimens were cut to obtain dentin beams and randomly divided into two groups for microtensile analysis at baseline and after 6 months of aging. Failure types were observed test after microtensile tests and data were analyzed by Two-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, and Chi-Square tests (p </jats:p
Techno-economic feasibility analysis of grid configuration sizing for hybrid renewable energy system in Turkey using different optimization techniques
Today, with a human population of 7.5 billion, increasing power consumption, and widespread use of high-technology equipment, the need for energy in the world is increasing day by day. The damage to nature caused by non-renewable energy resources and the economic and political disadvantages they cause in countries that must import these resources have led the world to search for alternative energy sources. One of the most important benefits of renewable energy sources is that they can create hybrid energy systems with other energy sources. Hybrid energy systems are structures in that more than one energy generation unit works together to feed the electrical load. In this paper, a hybrid system will be designed by using Homer PRO, to supply the energy consumed in the residential areas of Karaburun and Urla districts of Izmir province in Turkey with hybrid renewable energy systems. Systems of different sizes are designed for 50%, 75%, and 100% penetration rates, and sales to the grid are constrained to 0%, 25%, 50%, and no constraint on sales. Sensitivity analyses have been performed for 10% and 20% more power required by the load. Techno-economic analyses were done for the systems and the optimal system has been identified. The power flow of the optimal system is inspected by defining the network in Python and Fire Hawk Optimizer (FHO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used for optimal sizing of the system. The optimal system has a Net Present Cost (NPC) of $52.3 M, 34 wind turbines, and 954 kW PV with conditions of 100% penetration and no restrictions on sales to the grid. FHO proposed 26 wind turbines and 780 kW PVs for Urla and 8 wind turbines, and 174 kW PVs for Karaburun. GWO proposed 25 wind turbines and 747 kW PVs for Urla, 9 wind turbines, and 165 PVs for Karaburun. PSO offered 24 wind turbines and 708 kW PVs for Urla, 10 wind turbines, and 246 kW PVs for Karaburun. When there is no sale to and 25% sales to the grid, it is seen that the optimal scenario is the system with a 50% penetration rate. In fully sale-constrained systems, NPCs are higher than the base system and they can never pay for themselves compared to the base system. It is concluded that smaller-sized systems are more suitable for systems with high constraints. The proposed FHO algorithm and GWO algorithm react to increasing penetration ratios by enlarging the system size in the regions with high load demand. PSO sizes the system like predictions by load demand. FHO reacts quicker to increasing penetrations than PSO and GWO. FHO algorithm is found to be usable to solve optimal power flow problems and optimal system sizing
Effect of Reaction Time Exercises on Physical Functionality and Quality of Life in Geriatrics: A Non-controlled Study
Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of reaction time (RT) exercises on functional independence, static balance, fall risk, upper and lower extremity RT, and quality of life in older adults. Methods: Forty participants aged 65-77 years were included in the study. Participants’ functional independence was evaluated using the Functional Independence Scale, static balance using the Single-Leg-Squat Test, fall risks using the Morse Fall Scale, lower- and upper-extremity RT’s using the Light Trainer Flash Light Exercise System (Model LTV2, Turkey, 2017), and their quality of life using the Short Form-36. RT exercises were performed using the Light Trainer Flash Light Exercise System for six weeks, three days a week. Measurements were repeated after the treatment. Results: In the older adults examined, there was a significant difference between before and after the 6-week exercise protocol in functional independence, static balance, fall risk, upper- and lower-extremity RT, and quality of life (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study showed that a 6-week RT exercise program had positive effects on functional independence, static balance, fall risk, upper- and lower-extremity RT, and quality of life in older adults. The results showed that reaction-time exercises can be added to rehabilitation protocols for older adults and can be used in clinical settings
Vegetation and Evapotranspiration Analyses on Climate Maps
This study focuses on the investigation of Evapotranspiration (ET) processes under the climatic and geographical characteristics of Türkiye. ET refers to the process by which plants transfer water vapor to the atmosphere and is an important part of the water cycle. This research analyzes ET in Türkiye using imagery data from NASA Global Land Data Assimilation System Version 2 (GLDAS-2), MODIS, TerraClimate, SMAP Level-4, and Penman-Monteith-Leuning ET V2 (PML_V2). Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) data for Türkiye between 2016 and 2022 and Land Surface Temperature (LST) data between 2000 and 2022 were obtained from MODIS images. In the study, regression analyses were performed with ET values and SSM and LST data. The best result was a moderate correlation (R 0.57) between ET produced from SMAP Level-4 data and LST. A high correlation (R 0.59) was observed with SSM. Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) 1981 and 2023 precipitation data and 1981 and 2023 Surface Pressure (PS) data were obtained from MERRA image. Regression analyses were performed between ET data and PS and precipitation values. A moderate relationship (R 0.37) was observed between ET and PS produced from MOD16A2 V105 data. A moderate relationship (R 0.50) was observed between ET and precipitation obtained from TerraClimate data. This study aims to contribute to the development of strategies to effectively manage water resources and improve agricultural sustainability by analyzing ET in various regions of Türkiye.</jats:p
Effect of curcumin on methotrexate-induced ovarian damage and follicle reserve in rats: the role of PARP-1 and P53
Methotrexate (MTX) is an agent used in the treatment of many neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases and is known to cause oxidative damage in normal tissues. Curcumin (Cur) is a natural polyphenol compound with powerful antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects. In this study we investigate the effects of Cur on MTX-induced ovarian damage.Thirty-two young adult female Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: (1) Control (n = 8): only vehicle group, (2) Cur (n = 8): Cur-only group (200 mg/kg/day), (3) MTX (n = 8): MTX-only group (0.35 mg/kg/day), (4) MTX+Cur (n = 8): The group was given MTX (0.35 mg/kg/day) and Cur (200 mg/kg/day) for 28 days. Then, SOD, CAT, MDA, AMH levels were measured using ELISA kits. Follicle count was performed on H&E stained slides. In addition, the expressions of P53 and PARP-1 were analysed by immunohistochemistry.MDA levels were seen to be higher in the MTX group than in the MTX+Cur group (p < 0.05). Cur treatment lowered MDA levels and increased SOD and CAT levels (p < 0.05 for all). In the MTX+Cur group, atretic follicle count decreased (p < 0,05), however, primordial follicle count increased (p < 0,01). Secondary follicle count and AMH levels were higher in MTX-treated groups (p < 0,05 and p < 0,01, respectively). Expressions of p53 and Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1) increased significantly in the MTX group compared to the other groups (p < 0,05).Cur pretreatment prior to MTX administration may be an effective option in preserving the ovarian follicle pool by regulating P53 and PARP-1 expressions with its antioxidant effect

Online or in‐class problem based learning: Which one is more effective in enhancing learning outcomes and critical thinking in higher education <scp>EFL</scp> classroom?
AbstractBackgroundAlthough problem based learning has a great potential to promote learning outcomes as well as cognitive abilities, the number of previous studies investigating this potential on critical thinking, reading comprehension abilities and attitudes in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context is scarce. Also, the number of studies comparing the effectiveness of online and face‐to‐face problem based learning on these variables is scarcer and this limited research has yielded contradictory results.ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate and compare the effectiveness of online and face‐to‐face problem based learning on critical thinking skills, dispositions, reading comprehension abilities, and attitudes of EFL students.MethodPretest‐posttest control group quasi‐experimental design was employed in this study that has two experimental groups and one control group. There were 23 (13 females and 10 males), 23 (14 females and 9 males), and 22 (12 females and 10 males) EFL students in online problem based learning group, face‐to‐face problem based learning group, and control group, respectively. In the first experimental group, problem based learning activities were conducted online while the same activities were conducted face‐to‐face in the classroom in the second experimental group. In the control group, no experimental procedures were followed and the students continued their regular instructor‐led reading activities. Watson‐Glaser Critical Thinking Test, Sosu Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale, Reading Comprehension Test, and Attitudes Towards English Scale were used to collect the data. The data were analysed using paired‐samples t‐test and ANCOVA with pretest scores as the covariate variable. Results and ConclusionsIt was found that problem based learning, either online or face‐to‐face, significantly enhanced EFL learners' reading comprehension abilities and attitudes towards English as well as their critical thinking skills and dispositions. It was also concluded that online problem based learning is more effective to enhance reading comprehension abilities and attitudes than face‐to‐face problem based learning while they are equally effective in promoting critical thinking skills and dispositions in EFL classroom.ImplicationsThis study has significant implications for educators and researchers. As this study showed that online problem based learning is a promising alternative to face‐to‐face problem based learning, universities, educators, administrators, and researchers can organize their problem based learning activities online to promote learning outcomes and cognitive abilities in language classrooms. Also, future studies employing qualitative or mixed methods can be conducted with sample groups from different educational levels to provide an in‐depth examination of the advantages and disadvantages of online and face‐to‐face problem based learning.</jats:sec
KUTUPLAŞMA HİPOTEZİ ÇERÇEVESİNDE NAFTA ENTEGRASYONUNUN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ: PANEL VERİ ANALİZİ
Kutuplaşma hipotezi, farklı gelişmişlik düzeyindeki ülkelerin oluşturduğu ekonomik entegrasyonların, üye ülkelerdeki gelişmişlik farklarını arttıracağını ileri sürer. Hipotezin temel varsayımı entegrasyondan sonra kümülatif nedensellik mekanizmaları ile faktör hareketliliğinin çevreden merkeze doğru olacağıdır. Diğer yandan faktör hareketliliğinin merkezden çevreye doğru olacağını ileri süren görüşler de bulunmaktadır. Literatürde bu iki hipotezi sınayan çalışmalar çoğunlukla Avrupa Birliği üyesi ülkeleri konu almaktadır. Bu çalışmada kutuplaşma teorisi, Kuzey Amerika Serbest Ticaret Anlaşması (NAFTA-North American Free Trade Agreement) özelinde incelenmiş, söz konusu entegrasyonun kurulmasıyla üye ülkeler arasındaki gelişmişlik farkı açığının artıp artmadığı istatistiksel yöntemler ile test edilmiştir. Çalışmada, 1991-2019 yıllarını ve 3 ülkeyi kapsayan kutuplaşma düzeyi, dışa açıklık, üyeler arasındaki ticaret hacmi ve yabancı sermaye yatırımları değişkenlerine ait veri seti panel veri analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Kutuplaşma düzeyi, her bir ülke için tüm GSYH’lerin ortalamasından ilgili ülkenin GSYH’sinin farkının karesi alınarak hesaplanmıştır. Analiz sonucunda dışa açıklık ve yabancı sermaye yatırımlarının ülkeler arasındaki kutuplaşmayı azalttığı ancak üyelerin kendi aralarında gerçekleştirdikleri ticaretin kutuplaşmayı artırdığı tespit edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçlarından yola çıkarak gelişmekte olan ülkelere yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.</jats:p
