Case report: intracranial lesions in a patient with anxiety and depression: tumor recurrence or radiation encephalopathy?
PurposeRadiation encephalopathy (REP) is one of the most common complications of radiotherapy for malignant tumors of the head and neck. Symptoms usually appear months to years following radiotherapy, with headache, insomnia, and memory loss as the main clinical features. We report a patient who was admitted to the hospital with anxiety and depressive disorder and was eventually diagnosed with REP.Patients and methodsA 48-year-old patient who had undergone over 2 years of radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma was admitted to the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine of our hospital because of recurrent fear, low mood, and waking up from dreams. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass in the left temporal lobe with a large peripheral edema. After multidisciplinary consultation, the possibility of tumor recurrence could not be excluded.ResultsResection of the lesioned brain tissue to obtain pathological tissue showed glial cell proliferation and small focal areas of degeneration and necrosis, which indicated that the lesions were inflammatory. Postoperative MRI showed no abnormal signal, and the patient’s condition improved.ConclusionNasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with a history of radiotherapy and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and neurological damage should be examined for REP. Furthermore, patients may experience anxiety and depressive disorders as a result of temporal lobe damage caused by REP.</jats:sec
Preparation and characterization of hydroxyethyl cellulose/nanolignin composite films
Hydroxyethyl cellulose/nanolignin composite films were prepared and characterized. The composite films were produced via casting of synthesized nanolignin added to hydroxyethyl cellulose at different concentrations (2.5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by mass). A control film without nanolignin was also prepared for comparison. The thermal properties of the composite films were examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while the mechanical properties were determined by tensile testing and the surface properties were determined by water contact angle measurements. In addition, the morphologies of the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that with the addition of nano lignin, the glass transition temperature of the composite films increased from 109 °C to 262 °C; the elongation at break increased from 19% to 51%; and the contact angles increased from 53 °C to 73 °C. The results showed that the presence of nanolignin produced materials being more flexible and more hydrophobic with higher glass transition temperatures.</jats:p
Synthesis, Anticholinesterase and Antioxidant Activity of Thiosemicarbazone Derivatives
In this research, we report the synthesis and evaluation of novel thiosemicarbazones as anti-Alzheimer’s agents. The structural clarification of the newly synthesized compounds was carried out by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and MS analyses. According to the in vitro cholinesterase inhibition assay, compounds showed more inhibitory potential against AChE than BuChE. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds was measured via two different methods. According to ferrous ion-chelating assay compound 2b demonstrated 5.26% activity when compared to BHT (2.57%). DPPH radical scavenging activity assay revealed that compound 2b showed the most potent antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 43.91 ± 0.021μM. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 2b was found as the most potent antioxidant agent.</jats:p
Effects of Globalization on Human Development: An Empirical Study on Selected Muslim Countries
This study investigates the relationship between various dimensions of globalization (social, economic, political) and the Human Development Index (HDI) in seven selected Muslim countries (Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Pakistan) for the period 1990-2019. The Panel Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was utilized for empirical analysis. In the empirical analysis section, the level of human development was used as the dependent variable, while economic, social, and political globalization were selected as independent variables. The study found that political and social globalization positively affects human development levels, while economic globalization negatively impacts HDI. These findings indicate that political and social globalization enhances individuals' living standards and well-being, whereas economic globalization may lead to various adverse economic outcomes. The study aims to contribute to understanding the different impacts of globalization processes on Muslim countries by detailing the effects of globalization's various dimensions on the human development index. The effects of economic, social, and political dimensions of globalization on human development levels have been examined. This study aims to highlight the dialectical relationship between globalization and the quality of life in globalizing countries. The results of the study, supported by econometric analysis, reveal that globalization affects the quality of life in a country not only economically but also socially and politically, in different ways and levels.</jats:p

Rusya’da yaşanan devrimden etkilenen Buharalı Cedidcilerin ülke içinde siyasi söylemlerini değiştirmeleri, emirlik yönetiminin Yaşlar’a karşı siyasi tutumunda değişikliğe neden olmuştur. Bunun neticesinde ülke içinde Yaşlara karşı gözaltı, tutuklama ve işkencelerin başlamasıyla çok sayıda Yaş Buharalı, Bolşeviklerin kontrolü altında bulunan Türkistan şehirlerine kaçmışlardır. Bolşeviklerin, Emir yönetiminden kaçan Yaş Buharalılara kucak açması, Yaş Buharalılar ile Bolşevikler arasında Buhara’nın işgali ile sonuçlanacak iş birliğinin başlamasına neden olmuştur. Bu çalışmamızda Rusların Türkistan üzerindeki tarihî jeopolitik ve jeostratejik emelleri, Türkistan’ın geri kalması sonucu ortaya çıkan Cedidcilik hareketi, 1917 yılında Rusya’da yaşanan çifte devrim sonunda iktidara gelen Sosyalistlerin, Türkistan ve Buhara Emirliği siyasal yapısı üzerine etkisi, Buhara Emirliğinde meydana gelen Kadimci-Cedidci çatışması ve Bolşevik-Yaş Buharalı işbirliği neticesinde Rusların, Buhara Emirliğini işgal süreci incelenmiş, konuyla ilgili makale ve telif eserlerden istifade edilmiştir.</jats:p
Which is a Better Predictor for the Safety and Efficacy of Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery; Stone Size or Volume? A Study of RIRsearch Study Group
Objective: To compare the predictive effects of stone size and volume on the efficacy and safety of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) and to determine the cutoff values of stone volume for prediction of RIRS efficacy and safety. Methods: Patients who underwent RIRS between 2017 and 2021 in six referral centers were retrospectively included in the study. The database of the RIRsearch group, which was formed prospectively, was used for this retrospective analysis. The surgical results and complications of RIRS were evaluated according to stone size and stone volume and compared between these groups. Results: A total of 1128 patients were included. Operation time, intraoperative complication rate, and postoperative complication rate increased significantly as stone size and stone volume increased (P < .05). Stone size and volume were significant indicators for stone-free rates, but pairwise comparison showed that stone volume was a significantly better predictor of surgical success compared with stone size (P < .001). Stone size was not sufficient to predict postoperative complications, whereas stone volume predicted these complications with low performance. Conclusions: Stone volume was a better predictor for surgical success than stone size, and it was as reliable as stone size in predicting postoperative complications
The Effect of Dıfferent Rest Perıods on Blood Lactate Levels Durıng Cırcuıt Traınıng
Aim: Circular training is thought to have a motivating feature by distracting the individual from routine and boring training practices with different exercise methods. In this context, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different rest periods applied during circular training on blood lactate levels. Method: The pretest-posttest model was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 24 (Xage =20,00±1,79; Xheight =171,75 ± 6,22; Xweight =75,01± 6,39) volunteer male basketball athletes. Lactate measurements were taken before, during and after circular training with different rest periods. The data was analyzed in the SPSS 24.0 package program, with a 95% confidence interval and a 0.05 significance level, and normality analysis was performed with the Shapiro-Wilk test. Since the data were not normally distributed, nonparametric tests were applied. The change in heart rate averages and lactate levels of the research group according to resting times were evaluated by Wilcoxon Test. Results: In general, it was determined that the circular training program with different rest intervals caused significant differences in the measurement parameters (Heart Rate, and Lactate) of the participants (p<0.05). It was observed that the average heart rate and lactate values reached during training decreased as the rest period of the research group increased. On the other hand, the effects of long-term circular training programs with different rest intervals on aerobic-anaerobic energy metabolism will contribute to the literature.</jats:p
Effect of Fixed and Removable Functional Therapy on Mandibular Anterior Bone Structures: A Fractal Analysis Study
(1) Background and aim: The effects of functional therapies on dentoalveolar and skeletal structures have been investigated in orthodontics for many years. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the changes caused by fixed and removable functional therapy in the mandibular anterior trabecular structures using fractal dimension (FD) analysis. (2) Methods: A total of 60 patients with skeletal and dental class II malocclusion were included in the study and three groups were formed: the untreated control group (CG), the Forsus fatigue-resistant device group (FFRDG), and the Monoblock group (MBG). Bone areas of interest determined in the buccoapical of the mandibular incisors and the symphysis in the lateral cephalometric radiographs taken before (T0) and after (T1) functional therapy were evaluated using FD analysis. The relationship between the FD and IMPA (Incisor Mandibular Plane Angle) angles was evaluated. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used in statistical analysis according to normality distribution. The statistical significance level was determined as p < 0.05. (3) Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the FD values of all groups at T0 (p > 0.05). At T1, buccoapical FD values were significantly lower in FFRDG and MBG compared to the control group (p < 0.05), while symphyseal FD values were not found to be significant (p > 0.05). The IMPA angle was significantly lower in the FFRDG and MBG than in the control group at T0, while it was higher at T1 (p < 0.05). While a significant negative correlation was observed between the IMPA angle and buccoapical FD values in both FFRDG and MBG (p < 0.05), it was not observed with the symphysis FD values (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Trabecular changes caused by functional therapy in the mandibular anterior bone can be evaluated on lateral cephalometric radiographs with FD analysis. It was concluded that orthodontists should ensure controlled changes in the IMPA angle during functional therapy, especially for the decreases in FDs seen in the buccoapical alveolar region due to the forward movement of the mandibular incisors.</jats:p
