    Investigation of W, Pb, and Bi elements from neutron shielding point of view

    This study investigates the performances of tungsten, lead, and bismuth elements, which are widely used for shielding gamma-ray, from the neutron shielding point of view using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP6.2) simulation code. The study analyzed the neutron shielding capacities of Al matrix composites containing 30% W, Pb, and Bi. In addition, the shielding properties of secondary gamma-ray with an energy of 0.478 MeV resulting from neutron-boron interaction were also investigated. The results show that for thermal and intermediate energy neutrons, Al-30%W composite gives very good results by separating from Al-30%Pb and Al-30%Bi composites. However, Al-%30Pb and Al-%30Bi composites are also effective for fast neutrons. Regarding the gamma-ray, it was calculated that the Al-30%Pb composite exhibited the highest shielding performance. These findings provide important data on the contribution of W, Pb, and Bi elements used as gamma-ray shielding to neutron shielding in different neutron energy ranges and reveal that these elements should be used strategically with appropriate combinations depending on the neutron energy in neutron shielding designs.</jats:p

    Cognition as a parameter in monitoring the effect of multiple sclerosis relapse treatment: A prospective controlled study

    Cognitive evaluation was considered to be very important in the relapse period, on the basis of the presence of isolated cognitive attacks and the necessity of monitoring the patient both physically and cognitively.People with MS (pwMS) who were hospitalized during relapse were included in the study. All MS patients were evaluated by the neurologist with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), The 9 Hole Peg Test (9HPT) and the Timed 25-Foot Walk Test (T25-FWT). Additionally, all participants were examined cognitively with the Turkish version of the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS) battery. Also, schedules were indicated as during relapse before the treatment (pre-treatment) and the first month after relapse (1-month follow-up).A total of 140 MS patients (mean age; 34.98±10.09, mean disease duration; 6.05±5.29 years) and 86 healthy controls (mean age; 36.94±10.83) were included to the present study. The mean EDSS scores in pre-treatment in MS patients was 2.74±1.14 and decreased significantly in the 1-month follow-up (1.74±1.24; p<0.001). The mean SDMT score was lower by 8.76 points in MS patients than in HCs) in pre-treatment and 7.66 points in 1-month follow-up (p<0.001). The mean SDMT scores of all participants increased with measurement time gradually (p<0.001).In this study, it was detected which cognitive domains were affected after relapse treatment and cognitive changes in pwMS during relapse and remission periods compared to the healthy controls. All three BICAMS test scores significantly increased in one-month follow-up than the pre-treatment period. The results showed that CVLT-II and BVMT-R scores improved more in pwMS than in HCs, and also SDMT scores of pwMS showed a trend of increase, but was not a significant improvement

    Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı İle Depresyon, Anksiyete ve Stres Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

    Çalışmada, üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılık, depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Veriler, Batı Karadeniz Bölgesinde bir devlet üniversitesi 2021-2022 akademik yılında öğrenim gören 535 üniversite öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılık, depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri ile cinsiyet ve internet kullanım süre değişkenleri arasındaki farklar ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında Sosyal Medya Bağımlılık Ölçeği ile Depresyon Anksiyete ve Stres Ölçeği olmak üzere iki ölçme aracı kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler, bağımsız örneklem t-Testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) ve Pearson Korelasyon Katsayısı’ndan (r) yararlanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi neticesinde üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılık düzeyleri “yüksek” düzeye yakın olduğu görülmüştür. Anksiyete düzeylerinin “hafif ”, depresyon düzeylerinin “orta” ve stres düzeylerinin “normal” düzey oldukları görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri ile sınıf değişkeni arasında anlamlı farka rastlanmaz iken, internet kullanım süresi değişkenine göre anlamlı farka rastlanmıştır. Üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılık düzeyleri ile depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri arasında pozitif yönlü “düşük” düzey bir ilişki bulunmuştur.     Objective: Noise can cause physiological and psychological changes by affecting human health. This study aims to investigate the quality of life and self-report symptoms of tinnitus, hearing loss, dizziness, sleep, attention, anxiety and fatigue in workers exposed to excessive noise. Materials and Methods: The study included 111 workers working in noisy environments and 74 individuals not working in noisy environments (control group). The Short Form (SF)-36 scale was used to evaluate the participants' quality of life, and the visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the self-report symptoms.     Evaluation of oxygen administration in cesarean section under spinal anesthesia via lung ultrasound and the oxygen reserve index

    Respiratory functions may be impaired in cesarean section (C/S) delivery performed under spinal anesthesia (SA) and oxygen supplementation may be required. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effects of different oxygen administrations in pregnant women on the lungs during C/S under SA using ultrasound and oxygen reserve index (ORI).We conducted a randomized, controlled, single-center study from May 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. A total of 90 patients scheduled for C/S under SA were randomly divided into 3 groups. Following the SA, patients in group 0 were treated with room air, in Group 3 were administered 3 L/min O₂ with a nasal cannula (NC), in Group 6 were administered 6 L/min O₂ with a simple face mask. In addition to routine monitoring, ORI values were measured. Lung aeration was evaluated through the modified lung ultrasound score (LUS) before the procedure (T0), at minute 0 (T1), 20 (T2), and hour 6 (T3) after the procedure, and ∆LUS values were recorded.After SA, the ORI values of Group 3 were higher than Group 0 at all times (p < 0.05), while the intraoperative 1st minute and the 10th, 25th and 40th minutes after delivery (p = 0.001, p = 0.027, p = 0.001, p = 0.019) was higher than Group 6. When the LUS values of each group were compared with the T0 values a decrease was observed in Group 3 and Group 6 (p < 0.001, p = 0.016). While ∆LUS values were always higher in Group 3 than in Group 0, they were higher only in T1 and T2 in Group 6.We determined that it would be appropriate to prefer 3 L/min supplemental oxygen therapy with NC in C/S to be performed under SA

    How humans engineered possibilities of landscape: baskets and basketry materials in İnönü Cave

    Abstract Wood and bark are among the most significant raw materials prehistoric and early historical human communities used to produce tools and goods that shaped their daily life. Since special conditions are required to preserve objects made with these materials until today, we have limited information about how often or how this basic raw material was used. Here, we report evidence of how wood and bark were used in basket crafting and compare them with modern-day uses. On the northwestern coast of Türkiye, Zonguldak-Karadeniz Ereğli İnönü Cave has special conditions for the preservation of wood and other organic materials. In the Late Bronze Age Level III of the cave (1436 − 1123 Cal BC), baskets and evidence of basketry were found among water-filled puddles. These records are valuable for understanding how the environment surrounding archaeological sites was used by its settlers. Analyzes carried out to understand which types of trees in the environment are preferred for basket production highlighted European yew (Taxus baccata L.) and field maple (cf Acer campestre L.) species. Production techniques and species analyses of basket remains show the knowledge and level of specialization in basket production of the Late Bronze Age settlers of İnönü Cave.</p
