AbstractBackgroundLower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is a common issue in children. Data on the prevalence of LUTD in our country are limited. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of LUTD among children in grades 1–8 in Zonguldak, located in northwestern Turkey, using a validated voiding dysfunction scoring system.MethodsThe study included students in grades 1–8 from schools in central Zonguldak during the 2021–2022 academic year. Parents of children who were included in the study were sent a questionnaire via the Internet. Demographic information, the child's medical history, details about voiding habits, and voiding dysfunction symptom score (VDSS) information were obtained. The data from 654 students whose parents completed the survey were analyzed.ResultsThe prevalence of LUTD, daytime urinary incontinence, and nocturnal enuresis were 9.6% (n = 63), 12.4% (n = 81), and 13% (n = 85), respectively. According to the survey responses, the most common symptoms were urgency (n = 253, 39%), followed by holding maneuvers (n = 140, 21.4%). There was no significant relationship between the mother's educational level and daytime urinary incontinence (p = 0.091). Daytime urinary incontinence was more common in children of fathers with lower educational levels (p = 0.021).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates a high prevalence of LUTD among school‐aged children. Constipation, urinary tract infections, and family history should be integral parts of the initial evaluation. Identifying the prevalence of LUTD and related risk factors in children is considered the first step in reducing and managing the number of affected children in the community.</jats:sec

Effects of quercetin and sabinene on antioxidant and detoxification enzymes of model pest Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae): Molecular docking investigation

    No full text
Agricultural pest insects, particularly those within the Lepidoptera and Diptera orders, are responsible for significant crop damage, leading to economic losses. As chemical insecticides become increasingly prevalent, concerns over their detrimental impact on non-target species and the environment grow, emphasizing the need for less toxic alternatives. This study investigates the molecular interactions of quercetin and sabinene - two naturally occurring compounds - with key antioxidant and detoxification enzymes in Drosophila melanogaster, a model organism in biological research. In this study, the binding affinities of quercetin and sabinene with enzymes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP450), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) were evaluated using molecular docking techniques. The results revealed that quercetin exhibits stronger interactions with all enzymes compared to sabinene, with the highest binding energy observed between quercetin and CAT (-10.7 kcal/mol). These findings suggest that quercetin significantly affects the antioxidant and detoxification systems of D. melanogaster, potentially enhancing oxidative stress. Sabinene demonstrated weaker binding across all enzymes, indicating a lesser impact. The study contributes valuable insights into the potential of quercetin and sabinene as agents in pest control strategies by targeting insect biochemical pathways.</jats:p

Aim: Capsaicin is a compound that possesses antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is found in almost all bitter fruits. The objective of our study was to investigate the protective effect of capsaicin in an ethanolic ulcer model. Materials and Methods: The male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups, comprising a control group and three experimental groups (n=8). The control group (C) administered a single dose of distilled water subcutaneously. The Capsaicin (CAP) group was administered a single dose of 1 mg/kg CAP via gavage. The ulcer group administered a single dose of 1ml absolute alcohol via gavage, 30 minutes following the administration of a single dose of distilled water via gavage. The U+CAP group administered 1ml of absolute alcohol 30 minutes following the administration of 1 mg/kg CAP. Macroscopic and microscopic ulcer scores, as well as mucosal barrier integrity, were evaluated in the gastric tissues that had been removed. The levels of total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were determined in the tissue samples, and an oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. Results: In comparison to the U group, the macroscopic and microscopic mucosal lesions, TOS, OSI levels and IL-1, TNF-α, NFκB and Caspase 3 expressions were found to be decreased in the U+CAP group, while TAS levels were observed to be increased. Conclusion: The results of the study demonstrated that capsaicin protects mucosal integrity through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties in the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model.</jats:p

This study aimed to determine the incidence of pressure injuries (PI) in patients connected to medical devices during their treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the risk factors, and the most accurate scale that assesses PI.A cross-sectional study adhering to STROBE guidelines. It was carried out with 70 children connected to medical devices during their treatment in the PICU between 12.01.2023 and 06.30.2024. The PI development risk statuses of the patients associated with medical devices were evaluated using the Braden Q Scale, the BUCH Scale, the Glamorgan Pediatric PI Risk Assessment Scale, and an Injury Monitoring Form. The incidence of medical device-related pressure injuries (MDPI) in the PICU was 12.8 %. MDPI developed the most frequently in the nasal and oral regions, and 61.5 % of these injuries were Stage 1. The equipment with the highest rates of contribution to PI included nasogastric tubes, orogastric feeding equipment, and oral intubation tubes. The Braden Q, BUCH, and Glamorgan Scales had AUC values of 0.91, 0.83, and 0.80, sensitivity values of 77 %, 77 %, and 66 %, and specificity values of 82 %, 69 %, and 62 %, respectively. The results of this study highlight that medical devices used to support the recovery of critically ill children in the PICU pose a significant risk for PI development.Determining incidence and risk factors is important to prevent PI. Appropriate protocols, interventions, and strategies can be developed to manage the identified MDPI risk factors

Visual Footprint of Separation Through Membrane Distillation on YouTube

    No full text
Social media has revolutionized the dissemination of information, enabling the rapid and widespread sharing of news, concepts, technologies, and ideas. YouTube is one of the most important online video sharing platforms of our time. In this research, we investigate the trace of separation through membrane distillation (MD) on YouTube using statistical methods and natural language processing. The dataset collected on 04.01.2024 included 212 videos with key characteristics such as durations, views, subscribers, number of comments, likes, etc. The results show that the number of videos is not sufficient, but there is an increasing trend, especially since 2019. The high number of channels offering information about MD technology in countries such as the USA, India, and Canada indicates that these countries recognized the practical benefits of this technology, especially in areas such as water treatment, desalination, and industrial applications. This suggests that MD could play a pivotal role in finding solutions to global water challenges. Word cloud analysis showed that terms such as “water”, “treatment”, “desalination”, and “separation” were prominent, indicating that the videos focused mainly on the principles and applications of MD. The sentiment of the comments is mostly positive, and the dominant emotion is neutral, revealing that viewers generally have a positive attitude towards MD. The narrative intensity metric evaluates the information transfer efficiency of the videos and provides a guide for effective content creation strategies. The results of the analyses revealed that social media awareness about MD technology is still not sufficient and that content development and sharing strategies should focus on bringing the technology to a wider audience.</jats:p
