Synthesis of green anode material for lithium-ion battery from orthodontic waste by fuzzy logic

    No full text
For the fabrication of green batteries, instead of synthesizing the electrode materials from high-purity metal powders via primary production methods, it is of great importance to design and produce an electrode material by recovering valuable elements from existing wastes. In this article, for the first time in open literature, an electrode active material was fabricated from biomedical waste by using a combination of leaching and hydrothermal methods. Once 100% leaching efficiency was achieved, an optimization was realized in the hydrothermal parameters (filling ratios, time, and temperatures) to fabricate spherically shaped metal oxide powders with 150 nm particle size. Innovatively, fuzzy logic modeling was used for refinement of parameters. Subsequently, three verification experiments were realized at optimum conditions, defined by fuzzy logic. The repeatability as well as the accuracy of the model was confirmed. In the meantime, analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was applied for identification of the most effective parameter for the fabrication of powders in hydrothermal conditions. A detailed mechanistic analysis about the formation of particles was also realized. Finally, the possible use of this metal oxide powder as an anode material was evaluated galvanostatically and potentiostatically. The electrode delivered a higher capacity than graphite and achieved 100-cycle tests with success. The presented approach was anticipated to constitute an example for the future, as it brought an effective perspective to material scientists about the valorization of biomedical waste in high value-added applications such as energy storage devices

    No full text
Objectives: To investigate the effect of the combination of uterine artery (UtA) Doppler and vitamin D levels on perinatal outcomes in second trimester pregnants was aimed. Methods: UtA Dopplers and vitamin D levels of 226 pregnant women in the second trimester were measured. Patients were followed for adverse pregnancy outcomes. The relationship of this combination with these pregnancy outcomes was evaluated. Results: Sensitivity and specificity values are respectively; Left UtA-S/D ratio for preeclampsia was 85.29 and 81.77 %, left UtA-RI was 90.62 and 43.30 % for preterm birth, and 76.19 and 66.34 % for the development of fetal distress had the best predictive effect. Vitamin D values had no predictive value for any parameter (p>0.005). Conclusions: UtA Doppler has a good predictive value for many adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, in order to correlate these results with second trimester vitamin D levels, more homogeneous and specific groups are needed

Solitary metastasis mimicking glioblastoma in a patient with fahr’s disease

Fahr’s disease is defined as the accumulation of bilateral idiopathic calcification in the basal ganglia, dentate nucleus, and centrum semiovale. The coexistence of Fahr’s disease and intracranial tumors is extremely rare, with only five cases documented in the literature. This study aimed to present a rare case, discussing both similarities and differences with previously reported cases. A 70-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with a progressive headache over the past month. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with intravenous contrast was performed for further evaluation. Bilateral basal ganglia, thalamus, and dentate nuclei showed calcifications consistent with Fahr’s disease. After excluding toxic, infectious, and endocrine causes of calcification, the patient was diagnosed with Fahr’s disease. Magnetic resonance imaging also revealed a midline localized, irregularly contoured, and heterogeneously intense mass with contrast enhancement at the centrum semiovale level, accompanied by peripheral edema. Radiologically, the mass resembled a high-grade glioma or metastasis, and the presence of a lipid peak further suggested metastasis. Based on radiological findings, the patient was diagnosed with brain metastasis of breast carcinoma. The patient received chemotherapy for metastasis, which resulted in substantial regression of the mass. In patients with known Fahr’s disease, new-onset headaches and related symptoms should warrant evaluation for possible brain tumors. In these cases, imaging findings should be assessed along with physical examination findings and the patient’s medical history to support the diagnostic process

Determining the effect levels of augmented decent work criteria in sustainable economic development with the fuzzy dematel method

    No full text
Creating decent work is among the priority issues for sustainable employment and development. This study aimed to determine the effect levels of the International Labour Organization (ILO) decent work criteria by augmenting nine indicators in the ILO manual to 12 criteria through a comprehensive literature review. Fuzzy DEMATEL, a multi-criteria decision-making method, has been preferred in this context. According to the analysis results of the study, the most heavily ranked criteria are ‘healthy workplace environment’, ‘decent working hours’ and ‘safe working conditions’ respectively, which contribute to the decent work concept. Further, ‘balance between work–family–personal life’ has been found the most affected criterion, while ‘education and training system’ has been the most affecting. Based on the findings, remedial and developing strategies are suggested on issues such as corporate culture, working hours regulation, safe working environment, subordinate–superior relations, social activities and regulations that take family life into account

Study design: Survey study Objectives: To understand the priorities and expectations of individuals with disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries(SCI) who require long-term inpatient rehabilitation at a rehabilitation hospital. Setting: Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, İstanbul, Türkiye Methods: This cross-sectional clinical study included individuals over the age of 18 with SCI who had previously been hospitalized in a rehabilitation hospital. The 18-question survey, titled “What should a rehabilitation hospital be like according to persons with spinal cord injuries?” was administered to individuals hospitalized in the inpatient service of Çam Sakura City Hospital. It was also disseminated to people with SCI through social media. The participants’ demographic data was recorded. Results: The survey was completed by 120 participants, comprising 70 males and 50 females. The mean age was 37.47 ± 11.63 years. The time since the SCI was less than one year for 20 individuals and more than one year for 100 individuals. The results showed that robotic rehabilitation and psychological support were the most requested rehabilitation domains, while interest in sexual rehabilitation was less than that in other rehabilitation domains. Furthermore, in the correlation analysis, elderly participants indicated that there should be more specialized services and outpatient clinics exclusive to the SCI. Conclusions: The study revealed a striking trend – participants expressed a strong desire for SCI-specific rehabilitation units and robotic rehabilitation. Additionally, the significance and necessity of sexual rehabilitation should be conveyed to people with SCI

Resting-state eeg alpha rhythms are related to csf tau biomarkers in prodromal alzheimer’s disease

Patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease (ADMCI) typically show abnormally high delta (<4 Hz) and low alpha (8–12 Hz) rhythms measured from resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that the abnormalities in rsEEG activity may be greater in ADMCI patients than in those with MCI not due to AD (noADMCI). Furthermore, they may be associated with the diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid–tau biomarkers in ADMCI patients. An international database provided clinical–demographic–rsEEG datasets for cognitively unimpaired older (Healthy; N = 45), ADMCI (N = 70), and noADMCI (N = 45) participants. The rsEEG rhythms spanned individual delta, theta, and alpha frequency bands. The eLORETA freeware estimated cortical rsEEG sources. Posterior rsEEG alpha source activities were reduced in the ADMCI group compared not only to the Healthy group but also to the noADMCI group (p < 0.001). Negative associations between the CSF phospho-tau and total tau levels and posterior rsEEG alpha source activities were observed in the ADMCI group (p < 0.001), whereas those with CSF amyloid beta 42 levels were marginal. These results suggest that neurophysiological brain neural oscillatory synchronization mechanisms regulating cortical arousal and vigilance through rsEEG alpha rhythms are mainly affected by brain tauopathy in ADMCI patients.Ministry of Health, Italy ; IRCCS San Raffaele of Rome (Italy) ; Artificial Intelligence to Study the Relationships Among Sleep Disorders ; Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR

Evaluation of mandibular and maxillary second molar root canal anatomy in a Turkish subpopulation using cbct: comparison of briseno-marroquin and vertucci classifications

    No full text
Background: This retrospective study aims to characterise the root canal morphology of maxillary and mandibular second molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The number of roots and canal configurations were evaluated using both the Vertucci and Benjamı´n Brisen˜ o Marroquı´n classification systems. Methods: A total of 1084 second molar images (523 maxillary; 266 right and 257 left side and 561 mandibular; 285 right and 276 left side) were evaluated from 320 CBCT scans analyzed for the Turkish subpopulation. CBCT imaging provided superior visualisation of root canal anatomy compared to periapical radiography. The findings revealed diverse root canal configurations, with variations observed even within the same population. Statistical analyses, including the chi-squared test, were used to assess correlations between root number and demographic variables such as age and sex. Results: According to Benjamı´n Brisen˜ o Marroquı´n classification system, the most common configuration for upper right three-rooted teeth mesial root was 3URM2−1 (n:66, 35.7%), for distal root was 3URM1 (n:169, 91.4%), and for palatal root was 3URM1 (n:165, 89.2%). Additionally, the most common configuration for upper left three-rooted teeth mesial root was 3271 (n:50, 28.4%), for distal root was 3ULM1 (n:160, 90.9%), and for palatal root was 3ULM1 (n:158, 89.8%). In lower left molars, the most common configuration in the two-rooted teeth mesial root was 2LLM2 (n:114, 49.4%), and for the distal root was 2LLM1 (n:170, 73.6%). For lower right the most common configuration for two-rooted teeth mesial root was 2LRM2 (n:125, 52.5%), and for distal root was 2LRM1 (n:173, 72.7%)(p < 0.05). Conclusion: The primary outcome was observed that the root canal anatomy of upper and lower second molars may differ in both classifications of Turkish subpopulation. While Vertucci's classification was inadequate in some cases, Briseno-Marroquin classification was able to classify all upper and lower second molars with a single code. This new classification is a more useful system for classifying all second molars. There is a statistically significant difference exists among the new configuration according to the distribution of the teeth analyzed

    No full text
Background: Cholesteatoma is a proliferative disease that affects the tympanic cavity and temporal bone. Despite many studies and various theories, the etiopathogenesis of cholesteatoma has not been fully elucidated. Features such as invasion, migration, uncontrolled proliferation, and lack of differentiation are observed in both cholesteatoma and neoplasia. Aims/Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate somatic genetic alterations in known proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes in cholesteatoma. Material and Methods: 60 different known proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes were comparatively analyzed in cholesteatoma and peripheric blood samples from 15 middle ear cholesteatoma patients using next-generation sequencing. Results: JAK3 c.2164G > A, TP53 c.284delC, and KRAS c.377A > T alterations were observed in cholesteatoma tissue but not in normal tissue. In addition, 12 different germline variants were also identified in 8 patients. Conclusions and Significance: In this study, the presence of changes in cancer-related genes in cholesteatoma was determined and these changes were discussed in terms of possible clinical applications. We hope that the genetic alterations that emerged in this study, will be beneficial in guiding future research in this field.Necmettin Erbakan Universit
