In vivo effects of 1,4-dioxane on genotoxic parameters and behavioral alterations in Drosophila melanogaster
1,4-Dioxane (DXN) is used as solvent in different consumer products including cosmetics, paints, surfactants, and waxes. In addition, DXN is released as an unwanted contaminating by-product as a result of some reactions including ethoxylation of alcohols, which occurs with in personal care products. Consequently, DXN pollution was detected in drinking water and is considered as an environmental problem. At present, the genotoxicity effects attributed to DXN are controversial. The present study using an in vivo model organism Drosophila melanogaster aimed to determine the toxic/genotoxic, mutagenic/recombinogenic, oxidative damage as evidenced by ROS production, phenotypic alterations as well as behavioral and developmental alterations that are closely related to neuronal functions. Data demonstrated that nontoxic DXN concentration (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, or 1%) induced mutagenic (1%) and recombinogenic (0.1, 0.25, or 0.5%) effects in wing spot test and genotoxicity in hemocytes using comet assay. The nontoxic concentrations of DXN (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, or 1%) significantly increased oxidative stress, climbing behavior, thermal sensivity and abnormal phenotypic alterations. Our findings show that in contrast to in vitro exposure, DXN using an in vivo model Drosophila melanogaster this compound exerts toxic and genotoxic effects. Investigation of level density and gama strength function for photoneutron reaction in medical linacs in beamline
Photoneutron reaction cross-sections of 197Au, 187Re, 186W, 181Ta, 94,95,96,97,98,100Mo isotopes were calculated through the TALYS 1.95 nuclear reaction code. The energy range of the incident photon chosen as 7 MeV–30 MeV corresponded to the range of the giant dipole resonance region, which is also an applicable energy range in radiotherapy for many commercial medical linear accelerators. Calculations were performed using three phenomenological level density models available in code, namely the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas Model, the Back-shifted Fermi Gas Model, and the Generalized Superfluid Model. The most convenient level density model for each reaction was chosen using relative variance calculations. The cross-section calculations were repeated using gamma strength function models, Kopecky-Uhl generalized Lorentzian model, Brink-Axel Lorentzian model, and Goriely's hybrid model and the best level density model was kept constant. The calculated data and the experimental data from the international Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data Library were analysed and compared graphically.No sponso
Calculations of GDR parameters for deformed nuclei using LogitBoost classifier and artificial neural network
Photo-nuclear interactions are important for investigating fundamental nuclear physics phenomena. The photo-absorption cross-section energy curve displays a wide resonance called giant dipole resonance (GDR) until 30 MeV. First, spherical and deformed nuclei have been determined by using LogitBoost classifier, and then GDR param- eters for deformed nuclei have been estimated by using an artificial neural network (ANN) via Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm which has been selected for the training sec- tion. In the last step, 233U(γ,n)232U, 234U(γ,n)233U, 235U(γ,n)234U, 236U(γ,n)235U, 238U(γ,n)237U reaction cross-sections have been computed by using GDR parameters obtained ANN estimations. The mean square error, root mean square error, and R are evaluated as the best performance of ANN estimates. Photo-neutron cross-section re- sults have been compared with experimental data from the literature. Consequently, it has been found that ANN algorithms can be used to determine the GDR parameters for deformed nuclei in the lack of experimental data of photo-absorption reaction.No sponso
The therapeutic effect of ALT-711 on erectile function in rats treated with high-level AGEs (advanced glycation end products) containing diet
To investigate, if advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are involved in erectile dysfunction (ED) and also ALT-711, a cross-link breaker of AGEs, has the therapeutic potential against the development of ED in rats treated with high concentrated AGEs including food. For this purpose, 30 male Harlan Spraque-Dawley rats randomly were divided into three groups; (1) control rats treated with regular diet, (2) rats treated with high-level of AGE specific diet for 6 months, and (3) rats having AGE-diet treated with ALT-711 for the final 3 months of 6 months of AGE-diet period. Erectile response to
cavernosal nerve stimulation (CNS), protein expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and levels of AGEs, Malondialdehyde (MDA), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) were determined in penile tissues. Erectile responses to CNS and penile nNOS and cGMP content were significantly reduced, while AGEs and MDA were elevated in penises of
Group-2. Treatment with ALT-711 reversed ED and depletion of both nNOS and cGMP. Additionally, ALT-711 treatment reduced penile tissue AGEs and MDA expression. In present study: rats without any co-morbidity such as diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic renal failure (CRF) were treated with high-level AGEs containing food. Our results suggest that ALT-711 may be an interesting and promising approach in the treatment of AGEs-related ED.No sponso
Aesthetic impact assessment of the restored heritage-Cut Minaret Mosque, Antalya, Turkey
This research used Aesthetic Impact Assessment (AIA) to assess public appreciation of the aesthetic quality of the newly restored minaret of the Cut Minaret MosqueKurkut mosque is one of the important historical buildings in Antalya Old Town, Kaleiçi and represents a special landmark for its cultural and architectural identity. In 1896 a great fire destroyed the mosque in including the wooden ‘külah’ (spire) of its minaret. The lower parts of the minaret remained intact. Afterwards, the mosque had been called the ‘Kesik Minare’ Camii’ (Cut Minaret Mosque). The Cut Minaret special form remained for many decades part of the identity of the old town. In 2017, a restoration project started to be prepared for the mosque and its minaret. Visual Impact Assessment is crucial in this regard in addition to Public Preference Analysis in order to understand the restoration projects on public acceptance. This research used Aesthetic Impact Assessment (AIA) to assess public appreciation of the aesthetic quality of the newly restored minaret of the Cut Minaret Mosque. A set of aesthetic principles was developed for this purpose. The aim was to provide insights on the cultural values of architectural conservation and restoration and their role in shaping the identity of a continuously changing society. It has been found that the aesthetics of the minaret after restoration got around average public appreciation. This directs the attention of both the cultural and religious authorities, and community organizations to pay better consideration for the public involvement and participation in such projects.No sponso
Hücre hatlarının ve tümörlerin hizalanması ve çizge teorimsel yaklaşımlar
Cell line have now been shown in lots of research to be the most important primary tool for preclinical cancer research, but their representative quality in patient tumor samples remains unclear. The comparison of RNA-seq of tumor and cell line without any step is complex with various factors, consisting of different presence of regular cells in the tumor samples. Therefore, we developed an alignment method without any outside
information using graph-based method using the networks and applied it to integrate multiple extensive tumor and cell lines RNA-seq dataset. Our approach also showed that there are diversity in tumor correlation between cell lines, even though the vast bulk of cell lines are aligned with tumors of the identical cancer type. Furthermore, the challenge in integrating tumor and cell line RNA sequencing datasets is essentially combining the datasets while keeping the cell populations separate while preserving the originality of the data. In this regard, it has been overcome by using the iterative correction part of SciTuna (Marouf, et al., 2021), which is one of the batch effects correction methods. In this thesis, we introduce CellTuNeter, which we have developed as a result of graph theoretic approaches for the alignment of cell lines and tumor RNA sequencing datasets.Hücre hatları, klinik öncesi kanser araştırmaları için en önemli kilit araçlar olduğu artık birçok araştırmada ortaya konulmuştur, ancak hasta tümör örneklerini ne kadar iyi temsil ettikleri belirsizliğini korumaktadır. Tümör ve hücre hattı transkripsiyonel profillerinin doğrudan karşılaştırılması, tümör numunelerinde normal hücrelerin değişken mevcudiyeti dahil olmak üzere çeşitli faktörlerle karmaşık hale gelmektedir. Bu nedenle, denetimsiz bir hizalamayı network ağları kullanarak çizge tabanlı metod geliştirdik ve bunu birkaç büyük ölçekli hücre hattını ve tümör RNA-Seq veri setlerini entegre etmek için uygulamaktayız. Geliştirdiğimiz metod hücre dizilerinin büyük çoğunluğunun aynı kanser tipindeki tümör örnekleriyle hizalamış olsa bile, hücre dizileri arasında tümör benzerliğinde farklılıklar olduğunu da ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca tumor ve hücre hattı RNA dizileme veri setlerinin entegrasyonundaki zorluk noktasında, esas olarak hücre popülasyonlarını ayrı tutarken, veri kümelerinin yerel yapısını koruyarak veri setlerinin birleştirmesiydi. Bu aşamada yığın etkisinin düzeltilmesi metodlarından biri olan SciTuna(Marouf, et al., 2021)'nın yinelemeli düzeltme bölümü kullanılarak aşılmıştır. Everyday aesthetics and attractiveness of the üniversity campus
With the lengthy period that students spend on the university campus, it becomes a familiar part of their daily routine. Many parts of the campus transform into mere functional spaces accommodating students’ activities. It is therefore a challenge to identify and investigate a suitable framework for studying the aesthetical value and attractiveness of these familiar parts. It is also questioned whether there is a relationship between students’ specialization and their appreciation of the aesthetical value and attractiveness of these familiar spaces. Using the framework of everyday aesthetics, this research investigated the students’ appreciation of the aesthetical value and attractiveness of the Engineering Campus of the University of Bahrain. The study revealed that familiar spaces on the university campus have various levels of aesthetical value that affects their attractiveness. Familiar outdoor spaces proved more significant in this regard than buildings. The study also found differences between architecture and engineering students’ appreciation of everyday aesthetics in familiar spaces and their attractiveness. The study is the first to develop a theoretical framework for the use of everyday aesthetics to investigate the aesthetics and attractiveness of familiar spaces at university campuses and opens the door for further future research.No sponso
Music and students’ appreciation of interior aesthetics
Sounds are persistent in the built environment and affect the aesthetics experience of its visual qualities. Both outdoor and indoor spaces have various levels of sonic effects that need to be examined to arrive at better aesthetical qualities. Students of interior design spend long time working in their studios and normally listen to music during their work. There is a need to investigate the effect of music on students’ appreciation of the interior design aesthetics of their studios and how it can be used to support interior design education. This research studied the effect of music on interior design students’ appreciation of the aesthetics of their studio. The students were asked to evaluate several aesthetic qualities of their design studio while they listened to different types of music. It was found that the different music types affected differently the students’ aesthetical appreciation of the studio’s interior design. A study on the relationship between Internet addiction among adolescents aged 12-14 and their trait anger-anger expression styles and psychological resilience
İnternet; Covid- 19 sürecinde evde kalan ve sosyalleşemeyen ergenler için daha da çekici hale gelmiştir. Covid-19 sürecinin mecburi olarak getirdiği sosyal kısıtlama ve mesafe önlemleri, sosyal ilişkilerin azalması; ergenleri eşi görülmemiş bir derinlikte etkilemiştir. Özellikle ergenlerin beyin ve davranış
gelişimi ile ruhsal durumları ve iyi oluşlukları üzerinde etkili olmuştur. Nitekim, ergenlik dönemini yansıtan duygularından biri de öfkedir. Çalışma kapsamında İstanbul ili Küçükçekmece ilçesinde 12-14 yaş arasındaki 406 ergene ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmada ilişkisel tarama modeli ve aracı model analizi kullanılmıştır. Aracı model analizinde internet bağımlılığının sürekli öfke üzerindeki etkisinde, psikolojik sağlamlığın anlamlı kısmi rolü olduğu görülmüştür. Ergenlerin internet bağımlılığı, sürekli öfke ve öfke ifade tarzı,
psikolojik dayanıklılık ölçeklerinden elde edilen puanları “Covid- 19” pandemisi sürecinde bazı demografik özellikler (cinsiyet, internet kullanım süresi, beslenme düzeni, uyku) açısından incelenmiştir. Kızlarda, erkeklere oranla öfkenin içe vurumu puanları daha yüksek düzeydedir. Beslenme düzeni iyi olan katılımcıların öfke kontrolü ve psikolojik sağlamlıkları yüksek bulunmuştur. İnternet kullanım süresi arttıkça öfke ve internet bağımlılığı düzeylerinin yükseldiği, süre azaldıkça öfke kontrolü ve psikolojik sağlamlık düzeylerinin arttığı görülmüştür. Katılımcıların günlük toplam uyku saatleri; ortalamanın altındayken öfke dışa vurumunun arttığı, öfke kontrollerinin azaldığı görülmüştür. İnternet bağımlılığı puanları, erkeklerde daha yüksek bulunmuştur.The internet has become more and more attractive to the adolescents who had to stay at home and had no chance to socialize during the Covid19 process. The social restrictions and distancing precoutions that Covid19 brought with it and the decrease in social relations have aff ected the adolescents at an unprecedented depth. It has especially been effective on the brain and behavior developments of adolescents and their mental states and wellbeing. As a matter of fact, one of the emotions that reflect the adolescence period is anger. Within the scope of this study, 406 adolescents between the ages of 1214 were reached in the Küçükçekmece disctrict of Istanbul. In this research, relational screening model and agent analysis have been used. In the agent model analysisbased model , it has been observed that psychological resilience has a significant partial role in the effect of internet addiction on trait anger. The internet addiction, trait anger and anger expression and the scores of psychological resilience scales of the adoles cents were studied in terms of certain demographical characteristics (gender, the length of internet use, diet and sleeping habits) during the “Covid19” pandemic process. Anger introjection scores have been found higher in female participants than males. Anger management and psychological resilience of the participants who have better diet have been found high. It has been observed that anger and internet addiction levels increase with the increase in the length of internet use while with less time on the internet, the level of anger management and psychological resilience increases. It has also been observed that the level of anger expression increases and anger management decreases when the daily total sleeping hours of the participant is below the averag Internet addiction scores have been found higher in male participants.No sponso
SPeAR as a tool for sustainability impact assessment of hospital master plans: King Hamad University Hospital, Bahrain
Sustainability impact assessment (SIA) has been developed as a tool for the evaluation of proposed or existing development projects to improve their environmental quality, economic feasibility, and social commitment. Several approaches and tools have been used for SIA to facilitate the study and analysis of sustainability levels. Increasing attention has been directed to sustainability in hospital master plans yet little attention is paid to SIA as a tool for the management and control of their sustainability levels. King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Bahrain is a leading health institution in the country and the region. There are no publicly available documents of its master planning and there is no reference for sustainability planning and management in any of the available resources. This research uses the sustainable project appraisal routine “SPeAR” as an SIA tool for the assessment of social and environmental components of the master plan of KHUH. The research reveals that there is a need for the preparation of a sustainable master plan for KHUH with suitable sustainability indicators and measures with continuous monitoring. The research represents the first attempt to study the master plan of KHUH and its sustainability levels. It provides a guideline for other hospitals in Bahrain and the region.No sponso
