An integrated permanent magnet Micro-turbo- generator supported on microball bearings
This paper presents the design, fabrication, and testing of an integrated microturbogenerator utilizing permanent magnets and microball bearings. The key components of this generator are the following: 1) a silicon microturbine rotor housing thick magnetic components; 2) encapsulated microball bearings providing a simple actuation scheme and a robust support structure; and 3) wafer-thick stator coils. The microturbogenerator was designed and fabricated to have a ten-pole rotor and a ten-pole
three-turns-per-pole stator. The impedance of the stator coils was
shown to be a purely resistive 220 Ω up to 10 kHz. The spin-down
characterization of the rotor revealed a dynamic friction torque of
33 μN · m at a rotational speed of 16 kilo rotations per minute (krpm), corresponding to 6% turbine efficiency. The maximum per-phase ac open-circuit voltage and power were measured to be 0.1 V and 5.6 μW on a matched load at 23 krpm, respectively, in full agreement with theoretical analysis and performance estimations. The microturbogenerator presented in this paper provides a flexible design platform for further improvement and
will lead to the development of next-generation integrated micro turbogenerators offering high power, simple operation, and robust mechanics. No sponso
Proposals for sustainability of mud brick building tradition in Osmaneli
Heritage International Conference (2013 : Istanbul, Turkey)This study contains proposals for sustainability and protection of historic mud brick structures in Osmaneli which is settled on a valley surrounded by mountains covered with pine forests in the south part of Sakarya River. Osmaneli is one of the rare settlements which preserved its historic and cultural fabric to the present. The three components of historic buildings; mud brick, wood and stone had been used together masterfully during the construction of structures. Rubble stone was used on the foundations of the structures, then constructors built timber frames on it and filled the spaces with mud bricks by using a special technic called "hlml§" and plastered the walls with mud plaster. The roofs with large eaves of the houses are fascinating. In XVIl. Century, the raising of silkworms and silk culture was one of the main income source for local people. As an economic act, sericulture attracted the city architecture and interior uses of houses in Osmaneli. Between XVII.- XX. Centuries, natives of the town, Greeks and Turks lived together and produced silk in their houses. But after the independence war, as a result of the changing programme, new settlers arived to the town. Silk culture was unknown subject for them. In addition that, due to lack of spatial and numerical aspects of houses for this activity, raising of silkworms was ended. Large residences which was previously used by single-family, was divided into two or three family use, while floors or rooms for silkworm converted into living quarters. As a result of transformation of the building, structural elements and the space such as stairs, bathroom, toilet, kitchen, started to be added to the building and the spatial layout of the buildings started to be deteriorated. During the observations for the study of the documentation, it was identified that wood carcasses and mud brick which were used as main building material in historic structures, were seriously affected especially opening chapters of the roof by adverse environmental conditions. In this context, historical buildings are at serious risk. For the viability of the tradition of mud-brick structure in the county, within the scope of the material research program consisting of following studies, will contribute to the successful conservation work in Osmaneli. Investigation of the traditional mud brick production approach, by analyzing the samples with contemporary techniques, Mud bricks production in the light of the data obtained from experiments, Implementation of mud brick conservation by taking advantage of the methods contained in the successful realization. No sponso
Beyond the institutional logics: international level systemic analysis of EU-Turkish relations
This article aims to explain the slowing down of European Union (EU)–Turkish relations since the start of the accession negotiations in 2005 with international level systemic analysis. For this purpose, it examines the current challenges the new rising powers pose to the US-led unipolar international order and it shows how both the EU’s and Turkey’s responses to these challenges influence their relative powers as well as the negotiation process. By focusing on international level systemic dynamics, the article differs from the institutional explanations that explain EU–Turkish relations either with the utility-based logic of consequentialism or the
norms-based logic of appropriateness.No sponso
RBPmotif: a web server for the discovery of sequence and structure preferences of RNA-binding proteins
RBPmotif web server (http://www.rnamotif.org) implements tools to identify binding preferences of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). Given a set of sequences that are known to be bound and unbound by the RBP of interest, RBPmotif provides two types of analysis: (i) de novo motif finding when there is no a priori knowledge on RBP’s binding preferences
and (ii) analysis of structure preferences when there is a previously identified sequence motif for the RBP. De novo motif finding is performed with the previously published RNAcontext algorithm that learns discriminative motif models to identify both sequence and structure preferences. The results of this analysis include the inferred binding
preferences of the RBP and the added predictive value of incorporating structure preferences. Second type of analysis investigates whether the instances of the previously identified sequence motif are enriched in a particular structure context in bound sequences, relative to its instances in
unbound sequences. On completion, the results page shows the comparison of structure contexts of the motif instances between bound and unbound sequences and an assessment of statistical significance of detected preferences. In summary, RBPmotif web server enables the concurrent analysis of sequence and structure preferences of RBPs through a user-friendly interface. No sponso
No sponso
Monitoring of actuation conditions in a micro- turbo-generator
This paper presents the theory and implementation of an integrated sensing technique for the real-time measurement of applied actuation conditions in a micro-turbo-generator. The device is composed of a microturbine rotor with magnetic components and a stator with planar coils for electromagnetic induction. While the rotor is actuated with pressurized nitrogen, the induced voltages are extracted to generate and deliver electrical power as well as to monitor the pneumatic actuation parameters. It is demonstrated that the rotor speed, applied gas flow rate, and pressure show repeatable high linearity with respect to voltage frequency and amplitude in different devices. Sensitivity values of 83 Hz/krpm, 140 Hz/slm, and 1428 Hz/psi together with R 2 values larger than 0.97 are achieved. The integrated sensing technique presented in this paper will eliminate the need for external sensing components in continuous device screening, and lead to closed-loop control for autonomous tuning of desired operating conditions in rotary microgenerators. No sponso
An analytic decision support tool for resident allocation
Moving residents through an academic residency program is complicated by a number of factors. Across all residency programs the percentage of residents that leave for any reason is between 3.4% and 3.8%.1 There are a number of residents that participate in research. To avoid discrepancies in the number of residents at the all levels, programs must either limit the number of residents that go into the lab, the number that return to clinical duties, or the number of interns to hire. Traditionally this process consists of random selection and trial and error with names on magnetic strips moved around a board. With the matrix that we have developed this process is optimized and aided by a Microsoft Excel macro (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, Washington). We suggest that a residency program would have the same number of residents at each residency stage of clinical practice, as well as a steady number of residents at each research stage. The program consists of 2 phases, in the first phase, an Excel sheet called the “Brain Sheet,” there are simple formulas that we have prepared to determine the number of interns to recruit, residents in the research phase, and residents that advance to the next stage of training. The second phase of the program, the macro, then takes the list of current resident names along with the residency level they are in, and according to the formulas allocates them to the relevant stages for future years, creating a resident matrix.
Our macro for resident allocation would maximize the time of residency program administrators by simplifying the movement of residents through the program. It would also provide a tool for planning the number of new interns to recruit and program expansion. The application of our macro illustrates that analytical techniques can be used to minimize the time spent and avoid the trial and error while planning resident movement in a program. No sponso
