Interleukin 1 beta levels were significantly different in male FSHD patients

    No full text
Genetics & Discovery Research , P4.04In FSHD, DUX4 toxicity leads to cell death. Cell death is known to initiate a process called sterile inflammation through IL1 family, which includes IL-1β. Serum biomarker studies in the field have shown that there is a significant increase in IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels of FSHD patients compared to healthy controls. In this pilot study, we wanted to investigate whether inflammatory changes were present in our own patient group. For this purpose, we measured IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels in eight male patients and eight age-matched healthy controls. The serum levels of Interleukin IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α were quantified using a Simple-Plex cartridge for ELLA Automated Immunoassay System Instrument. As a result, we found that all of the parameters, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-alpha exhibited higher levels in FSHD group. However, of those, IL-1β was the only parameter that was significantly higher in FSHD patients compared to controls (p=0.012), while IL-6 and TNF-alpha were not significantly different. What we found was the high interindividual variation of IL-1β and IL-6. The small number of participants in the pilot study might be a limitation or geographic heterogeneity may be a contributing factor to this variability. It is noteworthy that the significant difference of IL-1β levels, an interleukin that is specifically associated with sterile cell death, was detected even in our pilot group. Based on this significance, we suggest that IL-1β may provide important clues regarding pathophysiology. No sponso

Two-stage research performance assessment of Turkish HEI using DEA and beta regression

    No full text
In this paper, we study the research efficiency of the Turkish higher education sector in a two-stage DEA model with variable returns to scale. The aim of this paper is to benchmark or rank universities according to their research performance and to identify exogenous factors that may affect an institution’s efficiency score. DEA scores are a prime example of fractional data - a fact that has been disregarded by many previous DEA models which used popular Tobit regression for censored data in the second stage. Using a sample of 50 private and public universities, the first stage of our model calculates the efficiency scores and determines the efficient reference set for inefficient universities. In the second stage, we use beta regression and bootstrapped hypothesis testing to estimate the effects that external factors (age, size and ownership status) have on efficiency scores. We find that 27 universities in our sample are research efficient. Beta regression summary statistics suggest that extra-large universities tend to be less research efficient than large universities (p=0.1), while both age and ownership status of the university do not have a statistically significant impact on an institution’s efficiency score. No sponso

Citizenship norms transforming in the age of artificial intelligence

    No full text
The multiplying rate of developments in technology, reflected in capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), has presented us with the most amazing tools that enable access to knowledge, implement know how, and create new knowledge. Artificial intelligence has become a valuable component of social and political life that cannot be disregarded. Yet, while the immense benefits of artificial intelligence are well known, its risks to liberal democratic governance are also increasingly becoming evident (Duberry 2021; Boyte 2017; Nemitz 2018). Scholars and sector experts fear that long-term, unregulated usage of social media and artificial intelligence may gradually change human behaviour and societal level cultures. This study is a conceptual exploration of the potential changes to citizenship norms in liberal democracies in this context. Political cultures and political ideologies reflect divergent citizenship norms, i.e., what is considered to be good citizenship. Citizenship norms establish what is expected of the citizen, and the values and norms that prevail in relations between citizens and between citizens and the state. Diverse citizenship norms are rooted in divergent theories of citizenship. Citizenship is, on the one hand, the relationship between the state and the citizen, establishing their rights and responsibilities. Citizenship is also agency, i.e. the right to make claims, demands and pursue rights. Citizenship is belonging in a delineated community, establishing who is in and who is out. Citizenship is participation, contributing to the democratic process and the well-being of one’s community. The debates on the impact of artificial intelligence on individuals lead us to expect that continued interaction of the citizen and artificial intelligence may transform each of these conceptualizations of citizenship. As new technologies intermediate the relationship between the state and citizens, citizens may be expected to take on new roles, while rights and obligations may transform. The increasing agency of AI itself carries the potential to pacify citizen agency and make participation less relevant. Narrowing spaces for the citizen voice and the "public sphere", along with misinformation, may devolve citizenship away from its liberal, democratic nature. And while republican conceptualizations of citizenship entail a sense of belonging and a sense of community AI has the potential to degenerate these norms by fragmenting and polarizing communities. This is an initial theoretical exploration of the implications of changing social and political dynamics as a result of the increased presence of artificial intelligence in our lives. It explores the changed and changing spaces, agents, and norms of citizenship in liberal democracies in this era of technology. And while it acknowledges the opportunities that the transformation may present it cautions against the risks it poses to securing and enhancing democratic citizenship norms and practices. No sponso

Neural network predictions of (α, n) reaction cross sections at 18.5±3 MeV using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm

    No full text
In recent developments, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have demonstrated their capability to predict reaction cross-sections based on experimental data. Specifically, for predicting (a,n) reaction cross-sections, we meticulously fine-tuned the neural network’s performance by optimizing its parameters through the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The effectiveness of this approach is corroborated by notable correlation coefficients; an R-value of 0.90928 for overall correlation, 0.98194 for validation, 0.99981 for testing, and 0.94116 for the comprehensive network prediction. We conducted a rigorous comparison between the results and theoretical computations derived from the TALYS 1.95 nuclear code to validate the predictive accuracy. The mean square error value for artificial neural network results is 7620.92, whereas for TALYS 1.95 calculations, it has been found to be 50,312.74. This comprehensive evaluation process validates the reliability of the ANN based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm in approximating the reaction sections, thus demonstrating its potential for comprehensive investigations. These recent developments confirm the feasibility of using ANN models to gain insight into (a,n) reaction cross-sectionsNo sponso

Building construction methods and systems: principles, requirements and application details

    No full text
The book presents practical information about the design and construction of building projects by addressing the principles of each method, unveiling background factors for requirements, and state-of-the-art application details. Science and technology provide thousands of construction materials, vast construction methods, and various construction equipment and tools for realizing diverse architectural and engineering design projects. From market perspectives for new participants, the current construction practices are chaotic, having wide material and method options with globally available traders. On the other hand, within this global market, there is a growing awareness and need for practical information among society and new participants in the industry about general and globally available construction methods and technologies. Rather than focusing on materials, available construction methods, and technologies were described in the book content concerning their classification systems. The subjects and topics are represented in a well-structured hierarchy supported by clear and narrative figures. The book presents general design and application principles of construction methods and technologies without diving into engineering calculations and formulas to keep the content easily understandable by all AEC practitioners and participants. Instead, state-of-the-art construction applications were explained to unveil the logic and application requirements at the background of systems and methods. It also serves as a teaching tool for undergraduate students in architecture, engineering, and construction. No sponso

The effect of technological unemployment anxiety on employee burnout

    No full text
In this research, the effect of technological unemployment anxiety on employee burnout has been examined. Structural equation modelling method was chosen to analyse multidimensional models with both direct and indirect interactions. The hypotheses have been tested by using structural equation modelling method. As the result of the analyses performed, out of nine hypotheses, six of them were supported. It has been empirically proven that lack of technical skill has a direct effect on emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, incremental technological improvements have a direct effect on all dimensions of burnout and emotional exhaustion is directly impacted by technological disruption. Although employee burnout is a subject that has been researched for years, this research is an original study investigating how the burnout perception of employees is affected within the framework of technological advances. Therefore, research demystifies the mechanism behind employee burnout linked to technological unemployment anxiety. No sponso

Sensitivity of Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) to the choice of SPEI probability distribution and evapotranspiration method

    No full text
The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) is a widely used meteorological drought index that incorporates potential evapotranspiration (PET) into a precipitation-based index. However, the understanding of the appropriate PET method for SPEI across different temporal scales in non-arid climate conditions remains limited. We compared Thornthwaite (TW), Hargreaves (HG), and Penman-Monteith (PM) equations for SPEI at various accumulations, considering three temporal scales: 1) long-term (25 years), 2) event-based, and 3) monthly. Also, we examined the log-logistic and generalized extreme value distributions to test the normality of SPEI computed from the three PET methods. To do this, we utilized high-quality climate datasets measured at 107 stations across the state of Oklahoma, United States, which has a diverse climate ranging from semi-arid to humid subtropical. No sponso
