A novel approach to predictor selection among large-scale climate indices for seasonal rainfall forecasting in small catchments

    No full text
Utilizing identical climate indices as predictors for all climate divisions within large basins may result in unreliable rainfall forecasts at the sub-basin scale. This study aimed to develop a new approach to identify the most effective predictors among large-scale climate indices for seasonal rainfall forecasting in small areas. The proposed approach combines a selective singular value decomposition method (SSVD) with a non-linear sequential forward selection method (NLSFS). Applying the new algorithm for seasonal rainfall forecasting within two climate divisions in Karkheh basin, Iran, indicated that the climate indices identified by the SSVD differed between the study areas. The combination of these indices exhibited a correlation with seasonal rainfall approximately 11% higher than those derived from the SVD method. Moreover, NLSFS significantly enhanced the forecast accuracy compared to the frequently employed linear sequential forward selection (SFS) method, and the optimal predictors chosen by the two methods differed across all seasons. No sponso

The effect of psychosocial support videos provided by the community on disease attitudes and symptoms of pediatric oncology patients: randomized controlled study

    No full text
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of psychosocial support videos provided by the community on the attitudes of pediatric oncology patients aged between 10 and 18 years toward their illness and treatment-related symptoms. Data sources: This prospective randomized controlled study was conducted with 52 pediatric oncology patients aged between 10 and 18. The data were collected using the Information Form, Child Attitude Towards Illness Scale (CATIS), and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS). When the control group received standard care, the intervention group received psychosocial support videos provided by the community at the beginning of the week for 1 month. Conclusion: This study suggests that the implemented intervention positively affected pediatric patients' symptom management, psychological well-being, and attitudes toward their illness. Considering that today's adolescents have grown up in the age of technology and show great interest in technology and media use, it is clear that psychosocial support videos may attract the attention of this age group. Producing and sharing similar content for other children with similar health problems may positively affect the psychosocial health outcomes of pediatric patients. Implications for nursing practice: It has been found that it is beneficial to include community-supported psychosocial support in the nursing care of pediatric oncology patients. For this reason, it is recommended that nurses actively participate in developing psychosocial support strategies and take the lead in creating and making the content accessible. No sponso

Neuroimaging assessment of basal ganglia volumes in Tourette Syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
Introduction: An increasing number of studies indicate thatanatomical, physiological, and histological differences in the basalganglia(BG) lie in the etiology of Tourette Syndrome(TS).However, the fact that there are very few studies on the anatomyof the BG in TS, small sample sizes, and unclear information as aconsequence of these studies’ contradictory findings is asignificant gap in the scientific literature. The current systematicreview and meta-analysis were performed to examine thedifferences in BG volumes between TS and controls.Method: The protocol was registered with PROSPERO(CRD42023445845). Pertaining studies were ascertained via asearch of the published literature in academic databases. Thesoftware Comprehensive Meta-Analysis was utilised for statisticalanalysis. Results: 527 articles were reached, and after the exclusion stages, 8articles remained for the current systematic review and 7 articles forthe quantitative meta-analysis. After evaluating each component ofthe BG individually, no difference was found between the BGvolumes of controls and TS.Conclusion: The failure to discover the predicted volumedifference can be explained by either the severity of the tic or theexclusion of comorbidity. The difference in BG volume is likelyrelated to TS cases with more severe tics and severe comorbidities. No sponso

An LCIA-based model proposal for the selection of building interior finishing materials

    No full text
The increasing environmental impacts of buildings highlight conscious material selection as a pivotal aspect of sustainable building design. Most current life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) models on material selection focus on the main construction or insulation materials while often neglecting the environmental effects of finishing materials. Hence, this study seeks to present an LCIA-based model for selecting finishing materials based on their environmental impacts. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) as a data source for the mandatory steps of LCIA is recommended for the model since it provides fast, reliable, and equivalent data on the environmental impacts of the materials. The model is validated by assessing three wall finishing materials in hotel bedrooms- gypsum board, paint, and wood panel. Findings revealed that the model has the potential to mitigate the environmental effects by guiding decisions made during the finishing material selection phase. No sponso

    No full text
Background Due to time and setting constraints in clinical practice, performing a comprehensive assessment with both questionnaires and physical performance tests may not be possible. This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship between physical performance and patient-reported outcomes in patients after Lumbar Spine Surgery (LSS). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 participants who were followed up at least six months after LSS. Participants were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for activity and rest, Modified Oswestry Disability Index (mODI), Lumbar Spine Instability Questionnaire (LSIQ), One Leg Stance Test (OLST), Semi-Tandem Stance Test (STST), 4 m Gait Speed Test (4MGS), and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Results OLST was moderately correlated with the mODI (r=-0.442, p < 0.01). STST moderately correlated with mODI (r=-0.356, p < 0.05). TUG was strongly correlated with mODI (r = 0.564, p < 0.01). In addition, TUG showed a moderate correlation with a-VAS and LSIQ, respectively (r1 = 0.392, r2 = 0.475, p < 0.01). A strong correlation was found between 4MGS and mODI (r=-0.535, p < 0.01). 4MGS had a moderate correlation with LSIQ (r=-0.374, p < 0.01). A regression model summary showed that the TUG, OLST, and STST were not related to r-VAS, a-VAS, mODI, and LSIQ (p > 0.01). Higher gait speed on the 4MGS test was strongly associated with lower mODI scores (standardized ß=-0.538, p = 0.021). Conclusion Less activity pain and disability are associated with good balance and performance. 4MGS can mostly predict patient-reported function in patients after LSS.No sponso

No sponso

Purpose Breast cancer surgery can cause changes in the anatomical structure of the shoulder and in shoulder mobility, leading to the increased possibility of long-term arm morbidity such as lymphedema. This study aims to evaluate the active shoulder joint position sense (AJPS) with and without lymphedema in postmastectomy patients. Methods A total of 66 women, including 22 patients with lymphedema, 22 patients without lymphedema, and 22 healthy controls, were enrolled in the study. Pain severity was evaluated with the Numeric Pain Scale and edema severity was measured with circumferentially at 10 cm intervals. The normal range of motion of the shoulder joint was evaluated with the universal goniometer and the AJPS was assessed by active position repetition testing at 55°, 90°, and 125° shoulder flexion targets using the smartphone application “Clinometer.” Results AJPS at 55°, 90°, and 125° shoulder flexion target angles with and without lymphedema were different in all target angles compared to healthy controls (p<0.01). There was a difference between the absolute error value of AJPS at 55° flexion (p0.05). Conclusion This study shows that the AJPS was negatively affected in with and without lymphedema postmastectomy patients compared to healthy controls. This result emphasizes the importance of adding personalized methods for the restoration of joint position sense in addition to rehabilitation programs generally applied to the patient group. No sponso

    No full text
In this paper, we study a class of Finsler warped product metrics with quadratic Ricci curvature. This class is characterized by a partial differential equation. In particular, we obtain a special class of Finsler warped product metrics with quadratic Ricci curvature, indeed, the metrics in this class are Einstein but not Ricci flat. We find an equation that characterizes Finsler warped product metrics as a strongly Ricci-quadratic.No sponso
