When urban planning of public green space serves colonial oppression

    No full text
oai:http://acikerisim.antalya.edu.tr:20.500.12566/2205Jerusalem established itself as a religious symbol with several social, cultural, and economic meanings through a prolonged history of civilization. Its western part was occupied by Zionist organizations in 1948 and the rest of it was occupied by Israel in 1967. In 1980, Israel annexed the eastern part and declared the unified city as its capital. Israeli occupation has severely damaged the urban structure of the city and dangerously affected its Muslim and Christian population. This was done through continuous military, political and economic hostile activities. Among these, the planning of green open spaces has been used as a means of racial discrimination between Jews and Palestinians, and as a means of confiscating Palestinian land and controlling their development. One of the Israeli deviations in this regard was the 1967 Town Planning Law. This law regulated several complicated administrative and judicial procedures for planning and building permission in Palestinian areas. More than 40% of Palestinian land in East Jerusalem was since then preserved as green open spaces for the future development of Jewish settlements. This research reviews the development of urban planning in Jerusalem since the start of the British Mandate in 1918 to investigate the planning of green open spaces and how it has been affecting the urban structure in the holy city.No sponso

Concepts of linear city for the urban re-development of Gaza, Palestine

    No full text
Urban planning remained until the mid-19th century limited to roads and squares construction, tree plantation and organization of buildings facades. By the turn of the 20th century, urban planning witnessed great development with the efforts of the first pioneers and the development of planning theories, one of which was the Linear City theory of Soria Y Mata. This theory was then developed further by the theory of Polycentric Linear City and the theory of Gauthier Linear Vertical City. Urban planning was first established in Palestine during the first quarter of the 2oth century by the British Mandate occupation authorities. It was limited to the regulatory framework aimed at the control of Palestinians’ use of their land. These regulations were not accompanied by a renaissance in the urban culture that was developing in Europe at the start of the 20th century. The end of the British mandate and the establishment of Israel in 1948 did not provide any chance for any development of the urban culture and planning practices in Palestine. The problem continued under the Israeli occupation of West Bank and Gaza in 1967. A serious attempt to rebuild a developed Palestinian urban planning system started in 1996 with the cooperation program between the Palestinian National Authority and the Norwegian government. The first regional plan was prepared for the Gaza Strip in addition to a structure plan for the city of Gaza. The regional plan favored a spatial strategy with two main cities, Gaza in the north and Khanunis in the south. This strategy overrides the geographic, demographic, and urban conditions prevailing in Gaza, which is only a small narrow linear of land overcrowded with around 1.5 million populations. This research investigates Gauthier Linear Vertical City theory and employs it to provide innovative solutions for the urban development in Gaza. This research was prepared before the barbaric Israeli wat on Gaza which started in October 2023 and continue during the preparation of the article for this conference. Hope never has been lost that Gaza will rise again like phoenix and this research will find a way to enlighten urban thinking for the development of Gaza.No sponso

Detailed analysis of gamma-shielding characteristics of ternary composites using experimental, theoretical and Monte Carlo simulation methods

    No full text
Ionizing radiation is vital in various fields but poses health risks, necessitating effective shielding. This study investigated the photon-shielding properties of polyester-based ternary com- posites with barite (BaSO4) and tungsten (W) using experimental methods, theoretical calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations for energies between 81 keV and 1332.5 keV. WINXCOM was utilized for the theoretical predictions, and the MCNP6 and PHITS 3.22 algorithms were employed for the simulations. According to the results, the simulation, theoretical, and experimental data all closely aligned. At 81 keV, the composite containing the highest amount of tungsten (PBaW50) had the highest mass attenuation coefficient (3.7498 cm2/g) and linear attenuation coefficient (12.9676 cm−1). Furthermore, for a sample that was 1 cm thick, PBaW50 offered 99.88% protection at 81 keV and had the lowest HVL and TVL values. PBaW50 exhibited attenuation capabilities, making it appropriate for use in industrial, medical, and aerospace settings. In summary, the findings of this study underscore the potential of polyester-based composites doped with barite and tungsten as effective materials for gamma radiation shielding. The PBaW50 sample, in particular, stands out for its attenuation performance, making it a viable option for a wide range of applications where durable and efficient radiation shielding is essential. No sponso

    No full text
We examined the prevalence of lifetime physical and any recent violence and related maternal characteristics and health in pregnant women. We used Patient Reported Outcomes data retrieved from the Copenhagen Pregnancy Cohort (n = 7,361). The prevalence of lifetime physical and any recent violence was 4.0 % and 1.6 %, respectively. For both lifetime and any recent violence, the highest prevalence rates were seen among women aged 18–24, non-cohabiting, smokers, low levels of educational attainment, and women with chronic medical and psychiatric disease and lower psychological well-being. The prevalence may potentially be underestimated in this study, highlighting the need for improving screening for violence. No sponso

Starting a new business can sometimes be quite simple and sometimes very challenging. Data from various countries show that this situation varies from region to region. In particular, the setup time and procedures involved in starting a business are important factors that can hinder the business setup process and demotivate entrepreneurs from making a new investment. This study therefore examines the extent to which entrepreneurs are affected by these factors. In the study, 10-year data of 87 different countries were used. These data consist of 3 different variables and include 2610 data in total. The findings demonstrated a positive and significant relationship between business setup time and procedures, a negative and significant relationship between procedures and starting a new business, a negative and significant relationship between business set up time and starting a new business. It was also revealed that procedures have a mediator role on the relationship between business setup time and starting a new business. The results of the study indicate that there should be a global reduction in the time-consuming aspects of business start-up procedures. Addressing these impediments to entrepreneurship and implementing policies that encourage the creation new investment in the economy are important tasks of governments. The research provides quantitative insights to researchers who aim to conduct future studies on this subject. No sponso

    No full text
This study examines the effect of the ethical climate on job satisfaction in the nursing profession and how this effect occurs through trust in colleagues. A survey design was used to collect data from 407 nurses working in hospitals in Mersin City, Turkey. The study used self-report questionnaires to measure the ethical climate, job satisfaction, and trust. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22 software, which incorporated confirmatory factor analysis to assess construct validity and the bootstrap method to examine mediation effects. Ethical protocols were rigorously observed. The study clearly demonstrated a significant positive relationship between the ethical climate and job satisfaction. The trust variable fully mediates the relationship between the ethical climate and job satisfaction. The findings make a strong case for the importance of an ethical climate in nursing, synthesizing findings from the previous literature. The findings of this study demonstrate the necessity of assessing different attitudes and behaviors in order to promote expected behaviors in the unique and intense working environment of nurses. These behaviors may diverge from theoretical predictions. The results of this study also revealed that an ethical climate and positive work attitudes among nurses have a significant effect on job satisfaction, which is an important input for productivity. No Sponso

Dual-wavelength synchronously mode-locked Cr:LiSAF laser with a tunable beating frequency and a central wavelength

    No full text
We demonstrate a versatile dual-wavelength synchronous mode-locking of a diode-pumped Cr:LiSAF laser for the first time, to our knowledge. A two-color mode-locked operation is achieved by using intracavity birefringent filters (BRFs) or etalons as frequency-selective elements. Using filters with different thicknesses and hence different free spectral ranges (FSRs), wavelength separation in two-color mode-locking could be selected between 1 and 9 nm, with corresponding beating frequencies in the 0.4–3.5 THz range. Moreover, the central wavelength of the two-color output could be tuned smoothly between 840 and 875 nm, only limited by the bandwidth of the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) used for mode-locking. The method, which enables easy adjustment of the central wavelength and beating frequency of a dual-wavelength operation, is suitable for use in other laser gain media as wellNo sponso
