Full text linkUnder the motto "Unknown Unknowns. An introduction to mysteries", the curator of the recent 23rd Milan Triennale 2022, Ersilia Vaudo -astrophysicist and director of the Diversity Office at the European Space Agency (ESA) - asked artists, architects and scientists to propose projects that address what we don\u27t know or don\u27t know.
A call with which he invited us to reflect in an interdisciplinary way on the immensity of undiscovered knowledge, understood as the driving force of thought. An idea that refers to the necessary and essential disorientation prior to any discovery.
(...) What is necessary is to have only ignorance and nothing more...
This request materialised in a constellation of installations, performances, events and debates that reflected on aspects such as gravity, light or the emerging challenges relating to deep space. All of them factors that architecture also faces and whose answers, as has happened throughout history, hBajo el lema “Unknown Unknowns. An introduction to mysteries” la comisaria de la reciente XXIII Trienal de Milán de 2022, Ersilia Vaudo —astrofísica y directora de la Oficina de la Diversidad en la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA)— solicitó a artistas, arquitectos y científicos plantear proyectos que abordaran aquello que no sabemos o que ignoramos no saber.
Una convocatoria con la que invitaba a reflexionar de manera interdisciplinar en torno a la inmensidad de conocimientos por descubrir entendidos como el motor del pensamiento. Idea que remite a la necesaria e imprescindible desorientación previa a cualquier descubrimiento.

Dicha solicitud se materializó en una constelación de instalaciones, perfomances, eventos y debates que reflexionaban a propósito de aspectos como la gravedad, la luz o los emergentes desafíos relativos al espacio profundo. Todos ellos factores a los que también se enfrenta la arquitectura y cuyas respuestas, como ha sucedido a lo largo de la historia, han anticipado las intuiciones o revelaciones de artistas, filósofos y científicos
Incógnitas de la arquitectura moderna en el sur de Chile: la revolución del color
Full text linkThe development of modern architecture in Latin America, and particularly in Chile, raises unknowns that are far from being resolved. However, during the great flow of research, publications and studies on the subject, it is possible to glimpse new perspectives that would contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of the phenomenon that completely marked the development of architecture and the city in the 20th century.
This text investigates an aspect that, from our perspective, has not been sufficiently studied in the development of architecture in the last century in Chile: color in modern architecture. Questions like: What is the role of color in modern architecture? How does color manifest itself in the various stages of development of said architecture? they have not yet been sufficiently addressed and even less answered. We consider that these questions are necessary, since we note, as a hypothesis, that the First Modernity in Chile (1930s and 1940s) is of fundamentally monochrome architecture, and the Second Modernity (1950s and 1960s) is polychromatic. This phenomenon, which completely transformed the expression of modern work, we have called "the color revolution".El desarrollo de la arquitectura moderna en Latinoamérica, y en particular en Chile, plantea incógnitas que distan mucho de estar resueltas. No obstante, en medio del gran caudal de investigaciones, publicaciones y estudios sobre el tema, es posible vislumbrar nuevas miradas que contribuirían a una comprensión más amplia y profunda del fenómeno que marcó por completo el desarrollo de la arquitectura y la ciudad en el siglo XX.
El presente texto indaga en un aspecto que, desde nuestra perspectiva, no ha sido suficientemente estudiado en el desarrollo de la arquitectura del siglo recién pasado en Chile: el color en la arquitectura moderna. Preguntas como: ¿Cuál es rol del color en la arquitectura moderna?, ¿Cómo se manifiesta el color en las diversas etapas del desarrollo de dicha arquitectura? no han sido aun suficientemente abordadas y menos aún respondidas. Estimamos que estas preguntas son necesarias, por cuanto advertimos, como hipótesis, que la Primera Modernidad en Chile (décadas de 1930 y 1940) es de una arquitectura fundamentalmente monocroma, y la Segunda Modernidad (décadas de 1950 y 1960), es policromática. Este fenómeno, que transformó por completo la expresión de la obra moderna, lo hemos denominado "la revolución del color"

Full text linkIf "architecture is the incorruptible witness of history", the home is, without a doubt, the irrefutable proof of how people have lived. The house, conceived from its most everyday point of view, has always been the marker of both technical and social progress. From its origin it revealed the way of life of an era and, despite the efforts of many, it ended up revealing as much about its authors as about its inhabitants.
In Arquitectura de las pequeñas cosas, the author invites us to travel with him through each of the ways of inhabiting, and also of looking at, each of the domestic nooks and crannies. The text, far from pretending to be a manifesto, is presented as an interview with the history of art and architecture over the last few centuries. But there is no correct answer, only ways of confronting each of the questions in their temporal, social and economic context.Si “la arquitectura es el testigo insobornable de la historia”, la vivienda es, sin duda, la prueba irrefutable de cómo se ha vivido. La casa, concebida desde su óptica más cotidiana, ha sido siempre el marcador de los avances tanto técnicos como sociales. Desde su origen reveló el modo de vida de una época y, a pesar del esfuerzo de muchos, acabó revelando tanto de sus autores como de sus habitantes.
En Arquitectura de las pequeñas cosas el autor nos invita a recorrer con él cada una de las formas de habitar, y también de mirar, cada uno de los rincones domésticos. El texto lejos de pretender ser un manifiesto es planteado como una entrevista a la historia del arte y la arquitectura de los últimos siglos. Pero es que, además, no hay respuesta correcta, únicamente formas de afrontar cada una de las cuestiones en su contexto temporal, social y económico

Full text linkRarely an artist has the possibility to design an urban space with entire creative liberty, just guided by his instinct and inspiration. Alcalde Gonzalo Ordóñez sculpture park, sites in O Porriño (Pontevedra), was created by the artist Vicente Vazquez Canónico (Gijón, 1937) with the approval of the local council in the early 1990s.
This paper is about the creative and constructive process of a work that highlights the diffuse limits between Architecture, Art, and Urbanism, and that due to its singularity becomes one of the few of its kind in our country, yet to be recognized and valued.Pocas veces un artista tiene la posibilidad de diseñar un espacio urbano con total libertad creativa, guiado simplemente por su instinto e inspiración. El parque escultórico Alcalde Gonzalo Ordóñez, situado en la localidad de O Porriño (Pontevedra), fue creado por el artista Vicente Vázquez Canónico (Gijón, 1937) con el beneplácito de la administración local a principios de la década de los noventa.

Una periferia llena de ideas
Full text linkThe periphery might be understood as the place where everything that we leave aside coexists, even the ideas that for whatever reason we have marginalized in the back of our minds. All those that we once had, but we couldn’t know how to carry out and were left behind in a sea of uncertainty and expectations. There are so many ideas that come to generate something, but they never achieve it... so many projects that don’t materialize and we never wonder where they are going. What about them? Are they cast into oblivion?
All the time we are generating material all over the planet that will never get materialized and we don’t know yet. Sketches, plans and many creative solutions that are born and disappear in this intellectual cloud that we generate throughout life.
We might consider at some point, that all this material can be shared. Maybe if we uncovered that box full of unfinished ideas, recycle and carry them out, we would prevent them from being lost in that periphery that we have generated.
Is this might be possible or is it just healthier to think that certain things have to be discarded in order to move forward?Podemos entender a la periferia como el lugar donde convive todo aquello que eventualmente dejamos de lado, incluso las ideas que por una u otra razón hemos marginado. Todas esas que alguna vez tuvimos, pero no supimos o no pudimos llevar a cabo y quedaron rezagadas en un mar de incertidumbre y expectativas.
Hay tantas ideas que llegan para generar algo, pero nunca lo logran… tantos proyectos, concursos y propuestas que no se materializan y jamás nos preguntamos a dónde van a parar.
¿Qué pasa con ellas? ¿quedan perdidas en el olvido?
Las 24 horas del día se está produciendo alrededor del planeta material que nunca va a concretarse y aun no lo sabemos. Bocetos, planos, croquis y muchas soluciones creativas que nacen y desaparecen en esta especie de nube intelectual que generamos a lo largo de la vida.
Podríamos plantearnos en algún momento que todo este material puede ser compartido. Que, si destapásemos esa caja llena de ideas inconclusas y pudiésemos reciclarlas y llevarlas a cabo, evitaríamos que se pierdan en esa periferia que nosotros mismos generamos.
¿Es acaso esto posible o simplemente es más sano pensar que hay que descartar ciertas cosas para poder avanzar
Arquitectura y arte de las órdenes religiosas en Zamora, 1939-1975
Full text linkThe importance that religious orders have had in shaping Western culture is beyond doubt. The European territory was shaped to a large extent by the transformative action of the monks, who colonized lands, drained swamps, planted forests, cultivated wastelands and built buildings —monasteries— where the ancestral knowledge of antiquity was preserved for centuries to later be spread through the new urban settlements that would emerge throughout the continent. The variety of religious orders never ceases to amaze. They present very different charismas: the solitary and the communal; those who live from their work and those who depend on charity; those who dedicate themselves to study and those who project their activity towards social assistance. In any case, they all intend to make visible some aspect of the Kingdom of God on this earth. Precisely, in May 2022, the first edition of the “Carisma e Creatività” congress was held in Rome, in which different initiatives that have been launched around the world were discussed to preserve and publicize the enormous heritage —artistic in general and liturgical in particular—which is often hidden in these buildings.La importancia que las órdenes religiosas han tenido en la conformación de la cultura occidental está fuera de toda duda. El territorio europeo fue configurado en buena medida por la acción transformadora de los monjes, que colonizaron tierras, desecaron pantanos, plantaron bosques, cultivaron yermos y construyeron edificios —los monasterios— donde los saberes ancestrales de la antigüedad se preservaron durante siglos para, posteriormente, difundirse por los nuevos asentamientos urbanos que irían surgiendo por todo el continente. La variedad de las órdenes religiosas no deja de sorprender. Presentan carismas muy distintos: los solitarios y los comunitarios; los que viven de su trabajo y los que dependen de la caridad; los que se dedican al estudio y los que proyectan su actividad hacia la asistencia social. En cualquier caso, todos pretenden visibilizar algún aspecto del Reino de Dios en esta tierra. Precisamente, en mayo de 2022 se celebró en Roma la primera edición del congreso “Carisma e Creatività”, en el que se debatieron distintas iniciativas que se han puesto en marcha alrededor del mundo para conservar y dar a conocer el enorme patrimonio —artístico en general y litúrgico en particular— que muchas veces se encuentra oculto en estos edificios
