    No full text

------ ABSTRACT. - The conservation of biodiversity in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is a key Millennium Development Goal defined by the United Nations. However, environmental degradation continues to advance, with biodiversity being particularly affected. The grasslands of South America, especially in the Pampas and Campos, representimportant grassland ecosystems, vital for global biodiversity and food security. However, global grassland conservation efforts face challenges in combating causes of degradation, such as overgrazing, poor management, land conversion, and climate change

A reevaluation of phylogenomic data reveals that current understanding in wheat blast population biology and epidemiology is obfuscated by oversights in population sampling.

ABSTRACT.- Wheat blast, caused by the Pyricularia oryzae Triticum lineage (PoT), first emerged in Brazil and quickly spread to neighboring countries. Its recent appearance in Bangladesh and Zambia highlights a need to understand the disease's population biology and epidemiology so as to mitigate pandemic outbreaks. Current knowledge is mostly based on characterizations of Brazilian wheat blast isolates and comparison with isolates from non-wheat, endemic grasses. These foregoing studies concluded that the wheat blast population lacks host specificity and, as a result, undergoes extensive gene flow with populations infecting non-wheat hosts. Additionally, based on genetic similarity between wheat blast and isolates infecting Urochloa species, it was proposed that the disease originally emerged via a host jump from this grass and that Urochloa likely plays a central role in wheat blast epidemiology owing to its widespread use as a pasture grass. However, due to inconsistencies with broader phylogenetic studies, we suspected that these seminal studies had not actually sampled the populations normally found on endemic grasses and, instead, had repeatedly isolated members of PoT and the related Lolium pathogen lineage (PoL1). Re-analysis of the Brazilian data as part of a comprehensive, global, phylogenomic dataset that included a small number of South American isolates sampled away from wheat confirmed our suspicion and identified four new P. oryzae lineages on grass hosts. As a result, the conclusions underpinning current understanding in wheat blast's evolution, population biology, and epidemiology are unsubstantiated and could be equivocal. @ This article is in the public domain and not copyrightable.

    No full text

Hydraulic conductivity and native embolism of Geneva® Series apple rootstocks measured by the XYL'EM-Plus® embolism meter.

    No full text
Most commercial apple orchards are established on either Marubakaido (Malus prunifolia Borkh.) (high vigor), M-9 (Malus pumila) (low vigor), or a combination of both rootstocks through the intergrafting technique. The Geneva® Series rootstocks were developed as an alternative to orchards modernization. The vigor of rootstocks influences the anatomical xylem formation and, therefore, the canopy cultivar's hydraulic conductivity. When affected by embolism, hydraulic conductivity harms plant metabolism, reducing crop yield and fruit quality. This study aimed to evaluate four Geneva® Series rootstocks with potential use in southern Brazil, in terms of hydraulic conductivity (K) and percentage loss of conductance (PLC), during the winter period in two different years. The G.213 rootstock presented the best performance for the variables analyzed; however, higher values of xylem functionality loss were observed in G.814

Uruguayan beef quality audit-2022: a survey of carcass traits related to quality and value of catlle. P130. [short paper-poster].

    No full text
The first Uruguayan Beef Quality Audit (UBQA) was conducted in 2002, in a joint project among Colorado State University, INAC e INIA and was an important benchmark to identify what the beef industry was producing, measuring and reporting on cattle and carcass traits. Seven National Beef Quality Audits (NBQA) were conducted in the U.S. (1991, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2016 and 2022), and four in Uruguay (UBQA 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2022). Many of the UBQA findings were used as training practices for producer and packers related to animal handling. But also some marketing demands have occurred, not only in Animal Welfare but also in meat quality attributes (marbling) explained by improvements in genetics and efficiency of the production systems. This UBQA-2022 was done to quantify if these mentioned changes could improve the quality and consistency of the Uruguayan cattle and identify current issues for the beef industry

    No full text
