Innovación en Lanas Superfinas y Ultrafinas en Uruguay: Una década de logros e impactos del CRILU - Fase I y la implementación de la Fase II.
Esta publicación tiene como objetivos centrales integrar, sistematizar, sintetizar, documentar y difundir los principales resultados obtenidos, metas alcanzadas, impactoslogrados y hallazgos encontrados durante más de 10 años de trabajo en investigación, comunicación, transferencia y adopción de tecnología, e innovación del CRILU - Fase I, así como documentar el proceso de trasformación institucional ocurrido y su implementación. Los aportes científicos y técnicos desarrollados por el CRILU han sido fundamentales para impulsar la innovación en el sector ovino, mejorando significativamente la calidad de las lanas y la eficiencia productiva de los sistemas ganaderos extensivos y semiextensivos del Uruguay. Esta publicación invita a sumergirse en un recorrido detallado por los logros, aprendizajes y proyecciones del CRILU, ofreciendo una visión integral del impacto que la innovación, la cooperación y la articulación institucional pueden tener en la transformación del rubro ovino en Uruguay
Genética de Eficiencia de Conversión: Crecimiento y performance reproductiva de hembras del Núcleo Informativo Hereford de INIA Glencoe.
La Eficiencia de Conversión (EfC) es una característica clave para el incremento de la sostenibilidad en la producción animal. El consumo residualde alimento o RFI (Residual Feed Intake) se define como la diferencia entre el consumo real de alimento de un animal y el consumo esperado enfunción de su peso, crecimiento y composición corporal. El presente articulo técnico presenta los primeros resultados obtenidos en el rodeo de Glencoe respecto a la asociación de EfC con variables relacionadas al crecimiento y reproducción de hembras
First record of Phytomyza rufipes Meigen, 1830 (Diptera, Agromyzidae) affecting Canola in Uruguay.
ABSTRACT.- The leafminer Phytomyza rufipes Meigen, 1830 (Diptera, Agromyzidae) is an oligophagous pest of plants of the family Cruciferae. These include Canola, Brassica napus L. We report the record of P. rufipes in Uruguay, which is confirmed through molecular characterization using DNA barcoding. Characteristic damage symptoms and immature stages of the pest were first confirmed on a Canola crop in Flores, Uruguay. © The authors

Implication of the order of blending and tuning when computing the genomic relationship matrix in single-step GBLUP.
ABSTRACT.- Single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) relies on the combination of the genomic ((Formula presented.)) and pedigree relationship matrices for all ((Formula presented.)) and genotyped ((Formula presented.)) animals. The procedure ensures (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) are compatible so that both matrices refer to the same genetic base (?tuning?). Then (Formula presented.) is combined with a proportion of (Formula presented.) (?blending?) to avoid singularity problems and to account for the polygenic component not accounted for by markers. This computational procedure has been implemented in the reverse order (blending before tuning) following the sequential research developments. However, blending before tuning may result in less optimal tuning because the blended matrix already contains a proportion of (Formula presented.). In this study, the impact of ?tuning before blending? was compared with ?blending before tuning? on genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) effects and indirect predictions (IP) from ssGBLUP using American Angus Association and Holstein Association USA, Inc. data. Two slightly different tuning methods were used; one that adjusts the mean diagonals and off-diagonals of (Formula presented.) to be similar to those in (Formula presented.) and another one that adjusts based on the average difference between all elements of (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.). Over 6 million Angus growth records and 5.9 million Holstein udder depth records were available. Genomic information was available on 51,478 Angus and 105,116 Holstein animals. Average realized relationship estimates among groups of animals were similar across scenarios. Scatterplots show that GEBV, SNP effects and IP did not noticeably change for all animals in the evaluation regardless of the order of computations and when using blending parameter of 0.05. Formulas were derived to determine the blending parameter that maximizes changes in the genomic relationship matrix and GEBV when changing the order of blending and tuning. Algebraically, the change is maximized when the blending parameter is equal to 0.5. Overall, tuning (Formula presented.) before blending, regardless of blending parameter used, had a negligible impact on genomic predictions and SNP effects in this study. © 2022 The Authors. Exploration of strawberry fruit quality during harvest season under a semi-forcing culture with plants nursed without chilling.
ABSTRACT.- Strawberry, a profitable crop, adapts well to diverse environments. This study evaluated the stability of fruit quality in different strawberry varieties produced as green plants without chilling during the harvest season in northern Uruguay. The focus was on understanding the impact of harvest date versus agricultural practices (different orchards and growers) on key fruit quality variables such as color, firmness, sugars, and acidity. Results indicated that the INIA Yrupé variety showed greater stability in external coloration and sugar content across harvest dates, suggesting that standardizing fruit coloration is viable under challenging conditions. INIA Guapa consistently met minimum requirements for soluble solids and ratio, with stable acidity and red coloration. Firmness was positively correlated with ratio (r = 0.81) and negatively impacted by rainfall 2?3 days before harvest. The findings suggest that harvest date has a more significant impact on INIA Yrupé fruit quality than growing conditions or practices, with variability observed in firmness and ratio but minimal variation in fruit coloration. These insights highlight the importance of harvest timing for maintaining stable fruit quality traits, which is crucial for breeding programs and ensuring consistent sensory quality and crop profitability. © 2024 by the authors. Single-step GWAS multi-trait threshold linear model for growth rate and heteroblasty in Eucalyptus globulus.
ABSTRACT.- Eucalyptus globulus Labill. is one of the most important species in the paper industry. Teratosphaeria nubilosa has affected plantations worldwide, infecting young foliage. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are essential to identify genomic segments associated with susceptibility to this disease. The inclusion of genomic strategies in breeding programs is key to the sustainability of the species. The aim of this study was to identify genomic regions associated with growth and heteroblasty (change from juvenile to adult foliage: ADFO) in a tree breeding population of E. globulus. Tree growth was measured as total height (TH) and diameter at breast height (DBH). All traits were evaluated at 14 and 21 months. A multi-trait threshold linear model was developed following the single-step genomic selection methodology. Genetic correlations (rg) and narrow-sense heritability (h2) for all traits were estimated. Windows of 0.2 Mb were used. Only the windows with an estimated variance greater than 1% were considered. The rg ranged from 0.51 to 0.97. The h2 was high for ADFO (0.83-0.84) and lower for HT (0.37) and DBH (0.53). In growth traits, no QTLs were found that explained more than 1% of the variance. However, two genomic regions related to ADFO were identified on chromosomes 3 and 11. © 2025 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland
