Corruption in folk customs in Serbia: Socio-ethnological approach

    Get PDF
The paper analyzes corruption in the framework of folk customs in Serbia from the socio-ethnological aspect. The analysis includes manners and forms of corruption generated and practised in the last period of the Ottoman Empire rule in Serbia. Through the records of the most eminent students of Jovan Cvijić, first Serbian great scientist, it is shown how corruption emerged and developed in Serbia and how it affected Serbian people's folk customs. The analysis covers research ventures showing the manners, forms and types of corruption practised in Serbia at the time of formation the new-century Serbian statehood in the 19th century, as well as at the beginning of the 20th century and between two world wars. Typologically speaking, corruption in Serbia belongs to parochial, institutional and political corruption. The paper particularly analyzes disapproval and justification of corruption in the Serbian national tradition. In the conclusion of the paper, it is emphasized that socio-ethnological records show that corruption and/or bribe emerged as a consequence of people's greediness, but also of unfavourable historical and social circumstances leading to the negative experience and negative patterns of corruptive behaviour. This was crystallized in the form of messages passed from one generation to another

Appreciative inquiry and possibilities of its implementation in victims support programmes

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is an innovative methodology and a process for facilitating positive change in organizations, groups, and communities (Cooperrider, Srivastva, 1987). This approach has been successfully implemented worldwide in management, the non-profit sector, health care, education, community development and other fields. Problem- solving gets replaced with innovation and by identifying the positive core that gives life to an organisation, a group, or a community when it is vital, effective, and successful. The concept is based on the heliotropic principle: that people move toward those things that give them energy and life. AI starts from the inquiry of the inner values of an individual and his/her positive images of the future that motivate and drive him/her towards affirmations and positive visions of the future. This paper considers the possibilities of implementation of AI in the field in which it has not been applied so far: in victims' support programmes. The first part of the paper presents the principles, methodology, and phases of AI. Examples of good practices are presented in the second part of the paper. The third part introduces possibilities, methods, and expected outcomes of the implementation of AI in victims' support programmes. The author concludes that AI has great potential to be implemented in victims' support programmes as an additional programme for their empowerment and envisioning optimistic expectations in future. It is expected that AI workshops would empower victims to successfully overcome the consequences of victimisation and achieve personal growth at the same time. The paper aims to consider the potential of AI regarding its implementation as additional content in victims' support and assistance programmes

Religiosity as a Value in Mono-Confessional Orthodox Societies: Serbia, Russia and Montenegro

    Get PDF
It can be said that Serbia, Russia, and Montenegro belong to the group of mono-confessional, religiously homogeneous societies since in statistical population censuses and socio-psychological research models, respondents identify themselves as Orthodox in more than two-thirds of cases. In addition, in all these societies, Eastern Christianity is a historical, traditional religion that for centuries influenced not only the formation of national characteristics but also beliefs, ethical norms, and ritual behavior. The purpose of the work is to test the value of Orthodoxy and Orthodox religiosity on the basis of empirical sociological research using three indicators of people’s connection with religion and the church: an indicator for measuring religious identity, as well as measuring ritual behavior through two indicators: church attendance and prayer. In the cases of Serbia and Montenegro, we are talking about the results obtained in the framework of the European Social Survey (ESS) conducted in 2018, and in the case of Russia, the data of the ESS survey, which was conducted in 2016. The presented data, at least in part, allow an overview of the current state of connection with religion and the church in Serbia, Russia, and Montenegro, and also make it possible to identify similarities and differences in the mentioned indicators of religiosit

What affects visitors’ intentions to recommend local festival attendance

    No full text
Festivals play a significant role in tourism industry, by contributing to a destination image, improving the quality of life in local communities, combating the seasonality of tourism demand and generating economic benefits by attracting tourists. Spreading positive word-of-mouth by satisfied visitors is a well-established mechanism for attracting new visitors. This study aims to examine the determinants of local festival visitors’ intentions to recommend festival attendance, in the context of traditional cultural festivals in Slovakia. The study has been performed on a convenience sample of 770 local festival visitors, by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Structural equation modeling indicated visitors’ perceptions of well-being as a consequence of festival attendance as a direct determinant of visiors’ intentions to recommend festival attendance. Hedonic value as a consequence of festival attendance emerged as a direct and an indirect determinant of visitors’ referral intentions. Implications of the study have been discussed and limitations and future research directions have been noted

Economic sustainability of energy conservation policy: improved panel data evidence

    No full text
This paper examines the nature of the economic activity–energy use nexus for 82 countries and the period from 1971 to 2014. Compared to all other papers, the current study is based on a significantly larger number of observations and was carried out by using new and advanced non-stationary panel data econometric techniques that overcame most of the existing methodical failures. The findings of the Granger non-causality test quite robustly lead to the conclusion that there is bi-directional causality both in the short and the long run. Finally, the obtained estimation results suggest that the increase of energy consumption by 1% results in an increase of GDP per capita between 0.54 and 0.56%. Also, the increase of GDP by 1% results in an increase in energy consumption between 0.47 and 0.48%. Governments cannot simply apply energy conservation policy by reducing total consumption of fossil fuels without negatively affecting economic activity and generating of spiral of mutual effects with positive ecological and very negative economic consequences. It is therefore necessary to make significant efforts to modernize the energy sector and to stimulate companies to invest in new energy-efficient production technologies relying on alternative environmentally friendly energy sources
