Conveyor hitch:The influence of COVID-19 pandemic on industrial production in CEE and SEE countries in 2020–2021

    Get PDF
The article deals with the COVID-19 pandemic impact on the industry of Central-Eastern and South-Eastern European countries in 2020–2021. The authors analyze the features of the active phase of the crisis, recovery growth and aftershocks in the industrial production of the given countries, and also determine the internal and external factors of strengthening the intra-regional heterogeneity of industrial systems and differentiation in the development trajectories of individual industries. The particular attention is paid to the participation of industrial enterprises of the CEE and SEE countries in the processes of global value chains transformation, triggered by the implementation of TNC strategies to increase their resilience. On the example of several industries (automotive, electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals manufacturing) the authors describe the differences in the nature of the “coronacrisis” impact on production activity and show the main risks for national companies due to the policy of “European industrial autonomy” (including those related to changing positions of given companies in production chains, backshoring and other forms of industrial relocation, ensuring the stability of supplies of raw materials and components)

In the period 2019-2021, the Serbian team (consisted form representatives of the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković", Institute of Public Health of Serbia "Dr Milan Jovanović Batut", Environmental Protection Agency, the Medical Faculty in Belgrade, Ministry of Health and the Institute of Social Sciences) conducted the research project on health prevention and multimorbidity in post conflict Serbia. Objective was to understand the perception of relevant actors about possible risk factors (environmental, behavioral, and socio-economic) for the occurrence of multimorbidity. Methodology applied in qualitative research was focus groups and interviews with the sampled population group representatives. Target population was health professionals, health providers’ and local municipalities’ management. The purposes of the research were: 1) insight into the main multimorbidity factors through the prism of stakeholders on the local level; 2) drafting recommendations on changing regulation and practice in public health prevention measures. Results of the research show that there is an agreement in the stakeholder perception that multimorbidity in Serbia is increasing and that preventive measures should be strengthened. All groups of predictors (environmental, behavioral, and socio-economic) are perceived as of equal importance. The research was the basis for development of the legislative and systemic recommendations

Towards a conceptual framework of sustainable food consumption

    No full text
This paper deals with one aspect of sustainable food consumption, i.e. consumption of locally grown and produced food. Review of literature indicates that locally produced food has positive impact on the environment and positive effects on local economy. The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic has caused logistics disruptions in global food supply chains, affecting food prices and availability in retail stores. In light of these obstacles, consumption of locally produced food has been recognized as a measure to combat eventual future disasters. Building upon the Theory of planned behavior (TPB) and systematic review of literature on consumers’ motives to purchase sustainable food, published between 2000 and 2021, this study proposes a conceptual model of the determinants of consumer behavioral intentions towards locally grown and produced food. Implications of the study are discussed and limitations and future research directions are noted

Public Procurement Employees' Perception on Legal Changes, Perceived Red Tape and Job Stress: Evidence from Serbia

    Get PDF
Public servants play an important role as guardians, guarantors, and promoters of the regime values who are in frequent contact with the citizens. Having that in mind, it is of high importance to understand their behaviour and attitudes on legal changes, perceived red tape and job stress. The aim of this paper is, therefore, twofold: firstly, to explore the influence of red tape and perceived red tape on public procurement officers’ (PPOs) and managers’ (PPMs) perception of the new Public Procurement Law in terms of its benefits to public procurement process and to their jobs and job stress, and secondly, to explore the differences between PPOs and PPMs regarding the examined statements. To answer the first question, we proposed a conceptual model which was tested using structural equation modelling (SEM), while to answer the second question we used the Mann-Whitney test. Both analyses were done using the data collected from 115 PPOs and PPMs in Serbia. The results show that PPOs and PPMs share similar attitudes regarding the existence of red tape, perceived job stress, and the influence they expect the new legislation will have on their jobs. Their expectations of the new legislation as well as their perception of job stress are found to be partially influenced by red tape. As PPOs are not that convinced that the new law will improve their job, it may be concluded that the changes the new law will bring are not substantial enough

Employment, Unemployment and Inequalities – Current Challenges

    Get PDF
Observing current world events from the economic point of view, it can be concluded that unemployment and inequality are two problems, which are more relevant than ever before. Namely, two major crises in the 21th century – the world economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, has put these issues in the focus of policy-makers and researchers. Each disturbance, whether caused by war conflict, social crises, migration or poverty, has triggered significant transformations on the labour market (i.e. a decrease in employment and an increase in unemployment) and an increase in inequality. Resolving the issues of unemployment and inequality, widely seen as acute problems of almost each country, requires the permanent activity of governments and their institutions, as well as of all other market participants. Serbia is also faced with addressing these two challenges, besides changing demographic picture compared with fifty years ago (population aging), economic crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine
