Aging well? Social spending, age, and subjective wellbeing across Europe

    Get PDF
The association between age and subjective wellbeing has been examined across different samples and observational time frames, most often indicating a decline in subjective wellbeing with age or a U-shaped relation. Although various contextual variables have been examined as moderators of this relation, the moderating effect of social spending has not been investigated so far. Given that social spending is potentially beneficial for wellbeing and that social spending in Europe is primarily elderly-oriented, we assumed that in countries with higher social spending expenditures, there is a more positive effect of age on subjective wellbeing. We used cross-sectional hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) analysis and the data from the ninth round of the European Social Survey, including 29 countries. Our results show that age is generally negatively related, while age squared is positively related to subjective wellbeing, indicating a U-shaped relation between age and wellbeing. Additionally, social spending at the aggregate level is a significant determinant of wellbeing at the individual level. Most importantly, social spending is a significant positive moderator of this association: with increasing social spending levels, aging is more positively related to wellbeing

Trust in local media and information they share during the Covid-19 pandemic: Belgrade example

The analysis of the relevant literature, especially earlier empirical research of serious pandemics (not including the forces of nature and the processes they create), refers to the assumption that man is (directly or indirectly) guilty of them. Given that the media transmits information related to the intensity of the spread of the pandemic, the death rate of the sick, etc., a survey of citizens’ trust in the local media and the information they convey was conducted in order to find out how much the media contribute to the intensity of the spread of the negative effects of the Covid 19 pandemic. Four assumptions were defined as questions to which respondents’ answers were requested: frequency of information through different types of media; assessment of the extent to which different types of media offer the possibility of objective information; the existence of free, independent and impartial media in Serbia, and finding the truth in the media. The research is of a quantitative type, conducted on a sample of 600 respondents in the city of Belgrade. For the collection and processing of data used the desk method, using interviews and via electronic questionnaires, in which the questions in the first part related to the socio-demographic variables of the respondents, while in the second part the group of dependent variables was operationalized through the statements, which were evaluated on a Likert scale. More sub-questions are offered within the four main questions. Descriptive statistical analysis (percentages, arithmetic mean), T-test, One-factor analysis of variance, Standard deviation, Multiple regression analysis and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05, and all obtained data were processed in the SPSS program, version 23

This article presents main indicators of population ageing in Republic of North Macedonia, Republic of Slovenia and Republic of Serbia. Main indicators used in this paper are proportion of old population and “older-old” population, old dependency ratio, ageing coefficient and median age. The aim is to observe and detect similarities and differences in the age structure of the region based on indicators of ageing. The results are shown that Serbia is a country with the oldest population: 13.8% old population, 3.6% “older-old” population, the old dependency ratio 25.45 people per 100 people of working age, and 42.5 median ages. The Republic of North Macedonia has a younger population compared to other countries

Why EWSs of financial crisis failed during the Covid pandemic - Serbia

    No full text
This paper contributes to the large literature on the early warning indicators of currency crisis. Early warning systems (EWSs) are designed to anticipate future crises, giving policymakers optimism that they would be able to make proactive management decisions. The magnitude of the destruction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be measured or forecasted accurately, as nobody knows how long it will exist in the world. The aim of the paper is to underline the experiences of EWSs in Serbia during the first two years of the pandemic and to suggest alternatives

Republika Srbija i Rusija - modeli investiranja RF u razvoj banjskog turizma u Srbiji
