Post-socialist desecularization and abortion among young people in Serbia and Croatia
Post-socialist desecularization has directly or indirectly shaped the
patterns of socially acceptable norms of sexuality and reproductive behavior. However, the impact of religion on public attitudes towards sexuality and reproductive culture is not monolithic. This paper explores
abortion attitudes as the most debated reproductive issue, commonly associated with the opposed secular and religious worldviews. We
hypothesize that the revival of religion and religious organizations in
the public sphere has shaped the dominant social norms concerning
sexuality and reproductive behavior, especially abortion attitudes, but
not in the same direction in Serbia and Croatia, despite similar trends
of desecularization. We compared abortion attitudes of young people
aged 16-29 in the two countries over the twenty years of post-socialist
transformation. We used data from Round 3 (1995-1999) and Round
7 (2017-2022) of the World Values Survey. The converging patterns of
non-religious and religious attitudes toward abortion indicate a trend
of significant social change in these two societies. In further analysis, we
looked at the differences between dominant religious denominations in
Serbia and Croatia (Orthodox Christians and Catholics, respectively) and
their dogmatic and social implications on social control and moral order
in these two societies. Historical generations of young people (mid-1990s
and 2020s) are compared to see if there has been a long-term impact
of liberal or “emancipative” values on abortion attitudes, despite the
prevailing desecularization
Climate change and economic growth: Plug-in model averaging approach
Bearing in mind the devastating nature of climate change, the question of how climate change affects economic growth is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to answer this question by eliminating the most important methodical shortcoming of the available literature. The analysis is based on an advanced plug-in model averaging procedure that allows taking into account a very large number of potentially important growth determinants. The results of the analysis show that the growth of CO2 and CH4 emissions by 1%, increases on average the economic growth rate by 0.00132 and 0.00537 percentage points, respectively. In addition, an increase in surface temperature change by one degree Celsius results in an average increase in the rate of economic growth by 0.865 percentage points. Finally, increasing the number of climate-related disasters by one leads to an average increase in the economic growth rate of 0.115 percentage points. The obtained findings also reveal the impact of climate change is very heterogeneous across countries. Such results imply that the current extent of global warming and climate change does not yet have a dominant negative impact on economic growth
Determinants of Young Adult Consumers’ Environmentally and Socially Responsible Apparel Consumption
Social and environmental responsibility of apparel sector has been drawing rising attention
of policymakers and researchers in recent years. One possible solution to curb the detrimental
effects caused by the clothing industry is to invoke more responsible demand of its heavy users,
such as young clothing customers. This study aims to examine a model of the determinants of
environmentally and socially responsible clothing consumption of young adult customers in a
developing economy. The study has been performed on a convenience sample of 439 respondents in
Serbia, by means of structured online survey. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by two-step
structural equation modeling procedure (SEM)—implying an examination of a measurement model,
followed by testing of structural relationships—has been performed within data analysis. Results
of the study indicate green consumption values as the most influential determinant of responsible
apparel consumption, followed by conscious consumption and receptivity to green communication.
Findings of the study contribute to the body of knowledge on responsible consumption and provide
directions for practitioners and policymakers. Study limitations are noted and future research
directions are provided
Culture of Equality: Integration of Persons with Disabilities into the Work of Cultural Institutions
The identity of people with disabilities is largely determined by society’s attitude towards them. The
way society talks about them, perceives their needs and allows them access to education, culture, healthcare and
employment, defines their further position and equality in the community. Therefore, those who work in the field
of culture have a great responsibility in relation to the position of persons with disabilities, to perceive them not
only as objects, but as subjects in cultural activity – as creators, consumers or employees.
The legal framework, international and national, has determined the prohibition of discrimination against persons
with disabilities, equal opportunities for them and the enjoyment of all the rights of persons without disabilities.
It provides a good basis for cultural institutions in the integration of persons with disabilities. Тhrough culture, every
individual can realise themselves professionally, receive an education, enjoy leisure time, and create and exhibit works.
The paper will present Culture of Equality research conducted on a sample of 159 cultural institutions in Serbia
at the national, regional and local levels, and providing quality data on the position of people with disabilities in
the cultural community and the opportunities for their integration. Its findings point to potential use of action
targeted at integrating and employing people with disabilities into the operations of cultural institutions
