Discrepancies Between Preliminary and Final COVID-19 Mortality Data – the Case of Serbia
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have scrambled to set up data collection and dissemination pipelines. These data end up in various online datasets. While it has been evident from the beginning that these preliminary data produced by some countries are not very reliable, the mortality data from Serbia seemed particularly problematic. These data are included in all major COVID-19 databases and utilized for research purposes worldwide. Discrepancies were identified between the preliminary mortality data reported through the emergency necessitated system and the final mortality data generated by the regular vital statistics pipeline. The number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Serbia, as reported preliminarily, does not align with the final death toll, which is more than three times higher. To evaluate the impact of the problematic data on research, we identified databases that include these data and reviewed the articles that utilized them. Our literature review identified at least 86 studies that were impacted by these problematic data. We strongly advise researchers to disregard the preliminary COVID-19 mortality data from Serbia. If all-cause mortality data is available, any preliminary data should be validated using excess mortality
Codependence of the development of selective tourism, organic production, and their financing
SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL PERILS AND HOPES IN THE FRAME OF INVERSE NOSTALGIA
With ecological and other challenges posed in rural and
small communities in mind, this text analyzes the relationship between
vertical social mobility and Serbian politicians' framework to achieve
sustainability and ecological transition and social innovation. This relation
we called Inverse Nostalgia. Inverse nostalgia towards one's previous class
position manifests as social and ecological risk generated by the new class:
a gradual break with the middle and lower class through a closure of
mobility channels and lifestyle change. There is also an aversion to one's
erstwhile milieu, manifesting as a threat to non-urban spaces.
Transformative social innovation is understood as a change in social
relations involving new ways of doing, organizing, framing, and knowing,
which challenges, alters, and replaces dominant institutions/structures in a
specific social context. These changes intersected and correlated with
social mobility, which is often the subject of generalizations. The progress
of certain social groups is frequently seen as representative of progress in
general. However, these events could be opposed to each other. The
premise of this study is that the initial vertical social mobility of the
Serbian political class, coupled with a change in place of residence, caused
a narrowing social engagement framework
Assessment of soil erosion in three sub-basins in Kopaonik national park (Serbia), employing SWAT and remote sensing
Soil erosion is one of the main environmental problems nowadays, mainly related to land-use changes,
such as agricultural intensification and deforestation. In Serbia, despite the estimation that 86% of the total
country’s territory is potentially at soil erosion risk, during the last decades the rate of soil erosion has been
in decline. This is related to demographic and economic processes: depopulation, population migrations
from rural to urban areas, demographic ageing, and decrease in agricultural activities. Despite this
tendency, several mountain areas are being exposed to continuous land degradation, mainly caused by
winter tourism development. The largest and most developed ski resort in Serbia is located within the area
of Kopaonik National Park, situated on Kopaonik Mountain, where major threats to landscape and
natural ecosystems are deforestation, increasing soil erosion, construction of ski slopes and urbanisation
accompanied by illegal construction, etc. In this research, we employed remote sensing techniques for data
collection and utilized the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to assess sedimentation and surface
runoff. The focus was on three sub-basins situated in the Kopaonik ski resort region, with data spanning the
years 1984 and 2018. The obtained results show a decrease in surface runoff and sediment yield in subbasin
2, and an increase in sub-basins 1 and 3. Additional analysis of land-cover changes in the given area
indicates an enlargement of evergreen forest cover, reduction of pastures and mixed forest cover, and
appearance of deciduous forests, barren soil, and urban areas. Results indicate that the main processes
affecting soil erosion are the development of winter tourism and recovery of vegetation due to a decrease in
agricultural activities
