SELF: From One to Many and Back to None

I had my first electroencephalogram done when I was eight years old. This uncomfortable ritual involved scrubbing the scalp with alcohol at specific points and attaching electrodes to those points to record the brain activity. After the preparation, the machine started buzzing, an endless sheet of paper was fed in, and the inked waveform patterns emerged. A cryptic chronicle of what I was thinking and feeling, of Me, being written in real-time for everyone to see. Could the doctors observe what I was thinking about them and their tedious procedure? Well, even at that age, I did know that they could not see my thoughts, though they could observe if I was drowsing off, that is, if I was not doing what they had instructed me to do, and this made me anxious and scared. Afterwards, looking at this thick book of wavy etchings, which depicted only half an hour of my conscious life, I was not able to connect it with myself; how was this about Me? What did these waves on paper say about me and my experiences? The disconnection between what is inside and what outside, the first and third-person perspectives, still haunts me today as it did when I was a child, although I did not refer to it as such

Factors contributing to the decision of our students studying abroad to return to Serbia

    No full text
The trend towards internationalization causes an increase in the number of international students who choose to study outside their home country. This practice has also been recorded in the Republic of Serbia, so in recent years the number of Serbian students participating in the international education market has been increasing. Relying on the theory of push-pull factors, this research examines the factors that contribute to the decision of Serbian students currently studying abroad to return to their home country as well as the realized decision of our students who returned to Serbia after studying abroad. The sample (N=126) includes students of all levels of academic studies. The research was conducted through a questionnaire during December 2023 and January 2024. Socio-demographic data were collected, and students' attitudes and experiences regarding academic mobility were examined. On this occasion, we focused on the results regarding the factors influencing the decision-making process of our international students to return to Serbia, taking into account socio-demographic variables. It was found that for the majority of our international students, the most important factor in the decision to return to Serbia is related to their profession and family

Attuning the World: Ambient Smart Environments for Autistic Persons

    Get PDF
Autism spectrum disorder is usually understood through deficits in social interaction and communication, repetitive patterns of behavior, and hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input. Affordance-based Skilled Intentionality that combines ecological-enactive views of cognition with Free Energy and Predictive Processing was proposed as the framework from which to view autism integrally. Skilled Intentionality distinguishes between a landscape of affordances and a field of affordances. Under the integrative Skilled Intentionality Framework, it can be shown that autistic differences in the field of affordances stem from aberrant precision estimation. Autistics over-rely on the precision afforded by the environment - a stable econiche they build. According to this approach, autism is understood as characterized by an atypical field of affordances. I will build on the ecological-enactive account of autism to suggest that one way to shape the neurotypical landscape of affordances in accordance with autistic needs is through the use of Ambient Smart Environments (ASEs). Taking the cue from autistic lived experience, ASEs could help minimize environmental uncertainty and afford affective scaffolding by supporting dynamic and flexible niche construction in accordance with individual autistic styles

Autistic traits in cognitive and material engagement: technical design and music capabilities of Palaeolithic bone flutes

    Get PDF
: Bone flutes found in Palaeolithic contexts in Europe represent the earliest archaeological evidence of technically elaborated music instruments made by Palaeolithic humans. One of them was found at the site of Divje Babe, together with the Mousterian lithic assemblage typically associated with the Neanderthals. The other is the assemblage of bone flute fragments from early modern human sites of Hohle Fels, Vogelherd, Geißenklösterle, and Isturitz associated with Aurignacian lithic assemblage, but also with other numerous symbolic artefacts such as bone and ivory figurines and personal/cloth adornments. They both come from the brims of the Alps and date to modern human and Neanderthal cohabitation in Europe between 50–35 thousand years BP. While their context, manufacture technology, and modern archaeological experiment replicas are known, little has been discussed about the topics of cognition, epigenetic variations, and moods that affect the manufacture, playing, and listening to the music in the period of the Neanderthal and early modern human cohabitation. Based on the integration of insights from archaeology, evolutionary psychiatry and philosophy of cognition, we offer a cognitive archaeological discussion on how autistic traits could have influenced the development of these cognitive capabilities and particular musical inventions encounte red in these cases

Reproductive rights in the context of medical law and demographic trends

    Get PDF
Medical Law examines reproductive rights through the prism of reproductive health. It encompasses all aspects from the perspective of human rights. The focus is on sources of law. The medical context of issues is very important. It is considered a serious violation if basic rules such as informed consent and patients' rights are neglected. Considering demographic trends leads to a connection between birth rates and restrictive legislation which has not been confirmed as a good solution. The conclusion emphasizes that medical law should have a more contributing role in improvement of reproductive health services, quality standards, and better legal perception and protection for al

The Role of Women’s Parliamentary Network in Serbian Politics

    Get PDF
After the parliamentary election in 2012, according to legal quota system, the number of elected women in the National Assembly of Serbia reached 33 percent. A high number of women who won seats in parliament for the first time launched an initiative to form an inter-party informal working body, consisting of all women parliamentarians regardless of party affiliation, the Women’s Parliamentary Network (WPN). The assumption is that WPN is an important mechanism for cooperation and building trust among women parliamentarians from different parties, an important tool in the contesting gender equality and the means for democratization of parliamentary politics. This paper will explain the principles of functioning, mechanisms and ways of operation of the WPN in the National Assembly of Serbia. The aim is to answer the following questions: Why do we need women’s network in parliament? How is the WPN organized in terms of seats in the parliament, structure and relations? What activities does the WPN perform? How does the structure of parliament and overall political context affect the results and efficiency of the WPN? What are the most significant achievements of the WPN in terms of gender equality mainstreaming? The analysis of the role of WPN is based on the study of the political representation of women and the critical actor’s theory

Gender inequality, green transition and energy poverty: decent future for everyone?

    No full text
The global energy crisis, which began in September 2021 and was further exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has led many people to experience increasing financial difficulties. Under the threat of energy shortages, this conflict has intensified inflationary pressures during the postCOVID-19 recovery and caused a cost-of-living crisis. Energy poverty has hit the most vulnerable groups the hardest, including women which are the largest energy consumers in households and have lower incomes than men. In addition, energy poverty deepens existing inequalities between men and women, as it further widens the gender pay gap, the gender pension gap, and limits women's employment opportunities compared to men due to their disproportionate caregiving responsibilities. Moreover, the energy crisis has brought to light the issue of women's position in energy policy, as it has a different impact on women and me
