Commodification of Public Space in Serbia – Capital as an Axiom in the Repurposing of Urban Public Areas: The Case of Serbian Orthodox Church and Investor Urbanism

    No full text
This paper arises from the authors’ interest in the growing phenomenon of investor urbanism, which has become a prevalent approach to occupying urban public spaces in Serbia over the past decade. Notably, the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) increasingly appears to be one of the investors in such projects. The foundational axiom of investor urbanism is the influence of capital, serving as both the means and the end of this type of development, often proceeding without the involvement of broader communities, public policy considerations, or expert consultation throughout the process. Investor urbanism is a phenomenon characteristic of global economic practices driven by a neoliberal logic that prioritizes profit above all else, even to the extent of assimilating spirituality within this late-capitalist cultural milieu. This paper aims to investigate the position of the SOC and how the Church engages with contemporary construction concepts and real estate markets, primarily in New Belgrade – an urban entity developed during the socialist era that has increasingly become a focus of public interest and civic protest against such approaches. The exploitation of public areas for the construction of residential and commercial buildings often occurs at the expense of the wider community and involves the integration of new structures into an already aging and overburdened urban infrastructure without any obligatory investment in improvements

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Legal Profession – Current Trends and Perspectives

    No full text
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has led to significant transformations across various sectors, including the legal pro fession. This research explores the integration of AI tools in legal practice, highlighting their role as support systems rather than replacements for hu man expertise. We identified a range of AI-powered tools currently utilized by lawyers, such as advanced legal research platforms, contract analysis sys tems, document automation tools, and predictive analytics used in litigation forecasting. These technologies have the potential to substantially reduce the time required for legal research, document review, and data analysis, there by increasing productivity. While they offer substantial benefits, they also present challenges concerning reliability, ethical implications, accountabil ity for errors, and the potential replacement of part of the support staff who previously worked on data collection from different sources. Given the rapid development of technology, it is necessary to adequately respond and regulate the use of AI in the legal profession, which is not the case in many countries at the moment. The research analyzes the current state of strategies, legisla tion governing AI use across different jurisdictions and identify regulatory gaps. It also reviews emerging guidelines developed by Bar associations to address these challenges. Finally, based on research results, regulatory ap proaches aimed at ensuring responsible integration of AI into legal practice are purposed. The research emphasizes that, despite the AI advancements, the human element remains essential

Aligning national ageing policy with global principles: Serbia and the Madrid international plan of action on ageing

    No full text
Population ageing poses a significant societal challenge throughout Europe, and Serbia is no exception, with its population ranking among the oldest on the continent. This paper examines the extent to which the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) has influenced national ageing policies in Serbia, a country facing accelerated demographic ageing, pronounced regional disparities, and limited institutional capacity. Drawing on qualitative policy analysis and secondary data synthesis, the study assesses the Strategy for Active and Healthy Ageing in Serbia (2024-2030) through a normative and institutional lens, focusing on its alignment with core MIPAA principles-such as intergenerational solidarity, human rights, and active ageing. The analysis employs a document review approach, guided by key dimensions of MIPAA, to evaluate both strategic content and implementation capacity. The findings indicate that while Serbia has made progress in policy formulation and awareness-raising, substantial challenges remain in financing, stakeholder coordination, and service delivery. Gender-based inequalities, particularly affecting older women, and structural constraints in rural and underdeveloped areas are also highlighted. The discussion reflects on how global trends- including digitalization, climate change, and public health risks-interact with ageing policy agendas. The study contributes to understanding how international frameworks shape national responses in transitional settings, offering insights relevant to other post-socialist countries facing similar demographic and institutional challenges

The modern gender gap in Serbia (1990–2024): Women’s ideological self-placement - Not left, but not right

Previous studies of ideological attitudes show gender differences in ideological self-positioning on the left-right scale, where it is concluded that women are more inclined to left-wing and progressive ideas– they more often identify themselves with the center-left compared to men. This phenomenon is called the modern gender gap. This paper examines whether this shift of women towards the center left, which was recorded in the countries of Western Europe, also exists in Serbia. The work uses the databases of public opinion research (1990-2024), owned by the Institute of Social Sciences, and international research conducted in Serbia. Examining the ideological positioning of men and women in Serbia over the past three decades can provide valuable insights into both the nature of the gender gap and the importance of self-centeredness in the post-socialist context. The results of the research in Serbia show that the predominant self-positioning of women in the position of the center left (only average values are considered) does not result primarily from their stronger connection with the left, but rather represents a combination of a lower tendency to position themselves on the right and a greater tendency towards the center. Additional analyses of gender differences showed that choosing the center on the scale left and right can be an expression of insecurity and the absence of clear attitudes, which opens up space for further examination of the motives of women to choose a centrist position on the scal

APITURISM AS A DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR RURAL TOURISM AND AGRO-BUSINESS

    No full text
In recent years, apitourism or beekeeping tourism has become a modern trend in the tourism market, as well as a development opportunity in the field of agro-business. Originating less than a decade ago in the Republic of Slovenia, after the Government of this country adopted a strategy for integrating beekeeping and tourism, it can be classified as selective, that is, specific or special forms of tourism. Due to the health benefits in the field of apitherapy, it is often associated with health tourism, while its characteristics are inevitably connected to rural tourism

THE ROLE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE USA IN SHAPING RELIGIOUS DISCOURSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Analyzing Its Influence on Faith, Community Engagement, and Public Perception

    No full text
This paper will explore how some key figures of the Catholic Church in America use social media platforms to engage with the followers, as well as to evangelize, and address relevant contemporary issues. It will also examine the Church’s development of online communities and its influence on the public perception of various Christian practices, as well as the Catholic stance on relevant moral and political issues. Additionally, the paper will analyze the effectiveness of the strategies used by the Church to engage with different demographic groups and assess its impact on faith-based dialogue in the digital age. An effort will be made to identify both the advantages and the disadvantages of the Church’s social media presence

Can E-Procurement Be a Panacea for Upgrading the Competition and Efficiency in Public Procurement?

The aim of this paper is to analyze whether electronic public procurement (EPP) has a positive and statistically significant impact on the efficiency and economy of the public procurement process as well as on broader participation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), both of which are recognized as strategic goals of a government. For this purpose, focusing on transparency, efficiency, centralization and bidder participation, we use a database of 65,394 public contracts awarded in the Republic of Slovenia in 2016-2020. Our research shows that there is a strong positive correlation between EPP on the one hand and: (1) higher transparency, expressed by a decreasing share of non-transparent procedures; (2) higher efficiency and economy indicated by the degree of centralization; and (3) broader participation of MSMEs on the other hand. Contrary to expectations, the introduction of the EPP did not increase the intensity of competition and the acceptance of framework agreements as an instrument of centralized and collaborative procuremen
